Both Superdrives Not responding Then Not Being Recognized...

So a few days ago both of my Superdrives started making a noise like they were trying to open. It would happen periodically but not too frequently to raise a red flag immediately. Then over the weekend the drives started opening and closing all on their own. I kind of became worried at that, but they still read and wrote media so it was OK. Yesterday I was trying to build and format a project on DVDSP and as soon as it prompted me to insert the media I got the pinwheel of death and all elements of DVDSP and Compressor became unresponsive in the Activity Monitor. Now I can't even open my Superdrives and the little eject icon in the top right says "No Drives".
This is a major problem and I'm assuming I will have to take it to the Apple Store for repair, but I just wanted to see if anyone has ever had similar symptoms and what their outcome was. I'm not creating or making anything out of the ordinary that I haven't done many many times before so I have no idea what's going on, but I assume it's a drive issue and not a DVDSP issue.
Thanks!

Hi kdengs ..
Can you explain further what you mean by Cable Select (CS)?
Sure. When using two DVD Drives together, one of them must be set to Master and the other one set to Slave. Each Drive has a jumper on the back that lets you select Master, Slave or Cable Select. The factory sets the jumper to Cable Select. This makes it easy for you to add another DVD Drive and will default to Slave. A No brainer. Just Plug & Play.
But what if you just got a better DVD Drive and you want to make it the Master, then the Cable Connections are as important as the jumpers and must match. Just remember that the connector at the end or top is the Master Connection and must be plugged into the Drive set as Master. The other, middle connector is the Slave.
When installing a second CD/DVD Drive set the jumper to Slave and plug it into the center Cable Connection. Leave the original CD/DVD Drive set Cable Select so that the end connection will keep it as a Master.
So I think you should open the Mac and slide out the CD/DVD Drive Bay just far enough to see how the jumpers are set and which Drive is plugged into the Center Connector (should be the bottom one). If both Drives jumpers are set to Cable Select then just change the bottom one to Slave by moving it from the center pins to the next pins to your right. If they are set to Master/Slave, then move the jumper on the master to Cable Select (center pins).
Good Luck.

  • My iPod is stuck on the Apple logo and won't do anything! It won't turn on, doesn't give me the option to power it off, and to top it all off, it's not being recognized by my computer OR by iTunes when I plug it into my computer.

So yeah...last night I was checking out my iPod (bored at the in-laws) and all of a sudden the screen went blank and the only thing I can get it to do is have the black screen w/ the white apple logo on it. It won't turn on, doesn't give the the option to power down, it won't charge, AND it's NOT being recognized when I plug it into my computer. Not by iTunes OR my computer. I've tried holding down the top button and the home button at the same time...nothing. And since it's not being recognized on my computer, I cannot restart it or go back to factory settings. Someone please help! I've had it for 18 months so the warranty is no longer valid and I don't know how to fix it. THANK YOU in advance!

    - I would try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then see if iTunes will see the iPod.  try both with the iPod not connected to the computer and with it connect. For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Next see if placing the the iPod in DFU mode will make it visible

  • Seagate portable drive not being recognized after OSX10.9.2

After I installed the 9.2 update, my Seagate portable external drive is not being recognized - doesnt show up in Finder, or Disk Utility, but I know the drive is live, as I can feel it vibrating
Someone please help, all my time machine backup is on that

I had the same issue - the Seagate drive is in a format that will recognize both Windows and Mac formats and there seems to be a flaw with Seagate.  After working on this for five hours and finally calling Apple, I found out why.  If you reformat to Mac OS extended journaled then they usually start working properly.
When I contacted Seagate they said it was best if you are just using a mac to just use the Mac formatting.
Hope this helps and good luck.  Hope there wasn't any valuable data on the drive.

  • USB, Firewire ports not being recognized?

Recently, I've been having trouble using my USB and firewire ports. I have a 1TB WD external hard drive which has been working fine until about a month ago when it stopped being recognized when I connected it through Firewire. I thought maybe my firewire cable or port was bad so I tried hooking it up through the USB port and it still didn't recognize that it was connected. After playing with it for a while, I finally got it to back it up.
Tonight I connected a thumb drive and it is not being recognized either.
Both ports are being recognized it Disk Utility and in System Profiler, and the USB ports work when I use them to charge my phone and Ipod all the time.
    Any suggestions?

Well now I feel a little silly..
I have tried using it on another computer and it was recognized just fine.
However, I have not tried manually mounting my WD hard drive and when I went to try to that, it worked just fine right away, without doing anything.
I then tried the thumb drive again and when I tried to mount it, it came up with this error:
"The disk “UDISK” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."
So I ran First Aid and it came up with this error:
"Disk Utility stopped verifying “UDISK” because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed."
The details say that the "File system is left marked as dirty."
So I guess there must be something wrong with the thumb drive, although it seemed to work fine on my PC.

  • X-Fi not being recogni

I bought an X-Fi yesterday with a 5. speaker set up, only the X-Fi is not being recognized. it is an X-Fi Xtreme music, i put it in my PCI slot, space away from my graphics card, and it is connected to the power supply in a 4 pronged slot. It is not showing up at all, i have disabled the onboard sound in bios, and tried disabling the 934 slot or whatever, and no luck. when i try to install the firmware/drivers for the card, It says no unrecognized products.Message Edited by popshuvit3 on 0-30-2005 0:46 PM

Well my board only has a total of 2 PCI slots, below a PCI-e slot that is occupied by my x700 graphics card. It says in the manual and on the knowledge base to keep it one slot away from the graphics card so both can get enough ventilation. The slot in between the 2 is open by the way. Im going to call creative labs today to see what they have to say.
I just think its weird because the first time i installed it i didnt connect it to the PSU. I placed it in the slot away from the graphics card, like the manual says. I powered up my computer, and waited 5 min for it to be recognized, because usually plug and play is immediate. Then i decided to just try to install the X-Fi drivers, and then it comes up with this screen saying "Setup is unable to detect a supported product on your system. Please ensure your product is properly installed before running this setup program. Setup will exit."Message Edited by popshuvit3 on 0-3-2005 02:50 PM

  • Ipod touch not being recognized by itunes now

i have a friend who has an ipod touch....everything had been going fine for him and then all of a sudden it was not being recognized any more....what caused this? he did say that he had done an update but i'm not sure what version he has....could this possibly be the problem.....does anyone an a fix for this?

I think Apple is having a problem at the moment, my Ipod touch was always fine syncing until the new update! (Even on older itunes version, I could'nt sync since new update came out) It just isnt recognizing the device...
Ive done all that Apple says to do, none of which helps at all, I reckon its thier own side of the problem they need to fix...

  • IPod touch not being recognized by iTunes on my MacBook, and on 2 other PCs

    Hello,
After scouring the web and these discussion forums to no avail, I've decided to post my problem. I downloaded iTunes 8.0 yesterday, and updated the firmware on my iPod Touch to 1.1.5. I tried connecting my iPod, and nothing happened. It is not being recognized by my MacBook. So, I tried using another USB iPod connector, and nothing happened. I tried using a firewire connector, and nothing happened. Frustrated, I tried connecting to my one roommate's HP laptop and see if it would get recognized there - no. I then tried on my other roommate's laptop. The device was recognized to be USB, but iTunes wouldn't go ahead and try and reformat it. I'm starting to lose my mind! I've tried resetting the iPod touch itself loads of times to no success. I've tried restarting while having the iPod connected to the computer, and still nothing.
    What should I do now?

Sorry about not getting to you on the quick-fast, but we aren't Apple employees.
What ended up being the solution you needed, as you said, you couldn't find any information already posted on this problem, so documenting your fix may help someone in the future.

  • TS3716 ipod nano is not being recognized by iTunes.

My ipod nano 2nd generation (and working perfectly) is not being recognized by iTunes.
    Any suggestions?

    Does the iPod work OK?
Have you tied resetting the iPod? Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
Next would be to place the iPod in recovery mode and then restore via iTunes.  If iTunes does not see the iPod then the iPod is not usable. For recovery mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore

The "Roman" font is not being recognized in Firefox 4.0. As such, I cannot read any previously posted topics or post any new topics on websites using this font.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Ipod touch not being recognized by itunes (but is registering as an external drive by the computer itself) have updated and reinstalled itunes, stopped/started apple mobile device and removed any mobile programs associated with my non apple cellphone. This seems to have started happening after the last Itunes update I did as I was able to put music on my ipod touch a month or so ago. Is there some way to go back to an older version of itunes? I really have no idea what else to do since I followed every step on the trouble shooting page for windows 8.

I had this problem too and my roommate solved it!
    Go to 'Settings'

Scroll to the bottom and enter your password to log onto your home sharing
