Bottom Cover Tamper Detection

Hi,
recently, I was pleasantly surprised that there is a Bottom Cover Tamper Detection in my T440s (according to the BIOS/UEFI settings).
Could someone explain to me how this actually works and how hard it is for an attacker to circumvent this detection technique?
And how often is it possible to make use of this? For example, I already opened my T440s for the installation of a SSD. Would the tamper detection work when I activate it now, or is it broken after my alteration?

I don't have one to look at but I can make a reasonable guess, The documentation says that if a supervisor (BIOS) password is set and the tamper detection is triggered, you cannot start the machine without the password. If there is a power-on password, the service manual says you can disable it by unplugging it, removing the external battery and the internal battery, then disconnecting the CMOS battery. Doing that, however, clears the date and time, so if a supervisor password is set, you cannot start the machine without fixing the date and time. With that in mind, a simple switch to cut off the power from all the batteries when the bottom cover was removed would make the machine inoperative.

  • Hi. Where/how do order a new bottom cover for my macbook pro year 2009 ?

    Hello,
the bottom cover of my macbook pro (model 2009) is too much scratched and is looking horible already, i would like to echange it. Any ideas what would be the process? Cann i find such a piece online on apple site and order it or i would need to send my mac to apple "repare" center and wait weeks to get that done ?
If there's no way to order it online i would go to apple shop and ask, but i thought here is the best place to ask first.
    Thanks !

    Thank for the answer!
i googled but i couldn't find yet something reasonable. Maybe this is because i need to look it up in german as i leave in Germany. But i will continue looking, not sure if in Germany however there're such companies. I will ask in the apple store eventually...
    thanks again!

  • Where can i buy a rubber bottom cover for my white macbook?

rubber backing off bottom cover has come away, no longer under warranty
mac doctor store nearby wont just sell me the part, want me to pay over $100 labour to install it (8 screws removed and replaced)
Anyone know if/where i can buy a part to install myself??

Try ifixit.com, I know they sell Apple parts and tools for servicing your own computer. You may also be able to find that type of part on eBay, though it would probably be used.

  • Something is wrong with the bottom cover

The bottom cover, I mean this one which protects sim card from water, is broken. I close it every single time but it still keep opening... Not completely but it comes off a little bit. What should I do? Should I give my Xperia for the warranty?

    I'm sorry to hear that.
I suggest that you raise this with your local support team to proceed with this in the best possible way.

  • Bottom cover seems to be stuck?

    Hi guys,
I've just bought myself a CR61 laptop. I still have 4gb of RAM lying around and I'd like to upgrade.
I'm having trouble removing the bottom cover. I remove all 5 screws as per:
     https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/uploads/165/MS-16GB_Disassembly_guide.pdf
But I feel like I'm forcing the lid when trying to remove it, as if it's stuck at the bottom side and near my optical drive. I don't want to force and break it. Anyone here have any experience with removing the bottom cover?
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, that's what I thought. I took out a 6th screw just to be on the safe side. By applying quite some force I managed to release the bottom half, and pivot the cover around the corner point (near the WLAN module). By doing so I've managed to upgrade the RAM on my notebook.
If there's anybody out there having the same problem, or can tell me what I'm doing wrong, please let me know how to solve this cover mystery!
    Thanks!

  • Early 2014 MBA clicking sound from bottom cover?

My 1 month old Macbook Air makes a clicking sound from the middle of the bottom cover when I have it in my hand, lap, or on my stomach. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Is it worth taking it in to the genius bar?

  • C855-S5308 how to disassemble bottom cover?

    Hi,
I have this C855-S5308 laptop about 1 year. Recently, when running large game, after the first couples of minutes the game just goes very slow (the fan loud, of course) and keeps that way. Or, if I open too many tabs in a browser, the fan is loud ,and even if I close the browser the fan keeps that way forever.
Guess the problem is dust. So I learned some tutorial, then the C855 tutorial in this forum,
    tutorial c855
, but I'm confused ---I tried  removing all screws from the bottom of the laptop, but still can not remove the bottom cover - I just want to clear fan's dust, do I have to disassemble harddisk and keyboard, first?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Prior to disassembling your laptop you can actually try a couple of other items.
    1. Purchase canned air. Spray the vents and the fan area while the laptop is off. Spray only 2 to 3 sec at a time, otherwise you could damage your hardware.
    2. Laptops often get too warm and cause the fan to run high because the design is actually not that efficient for air flow. If you are a gamer and use your laptop with memory intensive games while online; you may wish to purchase a cooling plate that will actually pull hot air from your laptop providing a better cooling process.
    3. Now if you still are having issues you can disassemble the laptop to use some thermal grease. I am attaching the manual for you for your laptop with illustrations that should be helpful.
Here are some good ones to choose from: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=gaming+cooling+pad&tag=googhydr-20&index=electronics&hvadi...Prior
    I hope this is helpful

  • Slight Flex from under bottom cover!! Is it normal?

    Hi Guys,
This is a weird issue that I have, and I wanted to run it by you guys first before I bring it up to the Apple geniuses, who seem to be trained to turn repairs down quite often I have noticed.
When I pick up my MBP Unibody (Mid 2009) with sealed-in battery, I noticed that in some cases I get a slight flex from under the bottom cover, it is very minor flex, but is the computer supposed to have any flex when you pick it up? To be more exact, I feel it under the SuperDrive when I grab the machine with one hand in that general area, it feel like a slight "creak".
Any comments and suggestions on this issue are appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Felix M.

I have come across some other posts in these forums regarding users noticing some flex in the bottom case.
    Here's one:

It's probably wise to always pick up your computer with two hands.

  • T430s, unable to open bottom cover screw

    Hi,
I wanted to check if I can add a mSATA drive to my t430s
but I am unable to open one of the bottom cover screws
It is so hard closed, it simply does not move (spin).
When I trial to open it I scratched a bit over the surface of the screw.
And for sure not because I am stupid, so far I opened all of my Thinkpads without any problem.
so I think there is something strange with this screw.
This means that my T430s is not expendable and repairable.
What now? What shall I do

and my wife's Edge E330 Linux

finally I was able to open the screw,
this was really a quality issue, dam soft screw and to hard in.
    not happy about this.
and I need a replacement for this screw
and unfortunately I found a Ericsson modem in the mSATA slot.
so it seems there is no mSATA available :-(

  • Cracks near hinges and bottom cover falling off

My 2010 MacBook is cracked at the hinges and the bottom cover is warped and slowly falling off. Can I get these fixed for free?

It would be worth asking at an Apple store!
When I had a battery replaced a year or so ago, my bottom cover was improperly replaced and appeared warped.
Without batting an eye, they offered to replace it - no charge.
I thought they were just being kind but it turns out it's a common problem on MacBooks from a certain time period (circa2010), so it is Mac's POLICY to replace them without charge when they warp!
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/
I have the same cracks appearing at the hinges (no bumps or drops, only a well-traveled and much used Mac!) but haven't asked about what obtaining a replacement shell would entail. If I do so before you, I'll reply again with what the terms / cost of replacement would be!

  • Thinkpad edge e530 large bottom cover stripped screw

    Hi,
I have a stripped screw on the large bottom cover caused by using the wrong screwdriver which was my fault. I am guessing warranty will not cover this issue, if not can anybody direct my to getting a new cover with screws in it, as the screws do not come out.
Also if it makes a difference, I put in a repair request through the website, and they shipped me a box to send my laptop in, however since I am a student I NEED this laptop every day and cannot have it in repairs.

Just a small bump, I have the same problem with my Lenovo S440. I plugged in an m.2 SSD, closed it up. The SSD didn't seem to be connected correctly, so I tried to open it up again and 1 screw just totally warped. I did use the correct screwdriver, it's actually exactly the same one as the Lenovo engineer who repaired my laptop yesterday used. I can probably drill it out without doing any damage, but if anyone has a better solution I'd like to hear it. I'm also looking for some replacement screws (the size/type isn't mentioned in the replacement manual, but I' ve already opened at seperate topic for that).
I know this post is quite old, but did you by any chance find a way to take it out?

  • Y510p - accidentally broken bottom cover

Hi, I have the y510y model for a while. Great machine and I'm taking care of it.
But yesterday on my way home some **bleep** pushed me in the tube trying to go out and teared my lap top back on oone side where the holder is. And my lap top fell on the floor!!  When I got home and checked for damages of course there were... It is not a big one but it is still there - my right corver top bolt seems to be broker or damaged and there is tiny little bit loose space. My lap top on the other hand is working perfectly. I've never ever dropped it before or managed it somehow.
So my question is - can I buy that bottom cover and replace it? How and where? Will that affect my warranty as I have paied for 3 years an year ago when I bought the machince?

  • Pressure on bottom cover makes Macbook Pro shutdown

Have a problem I have never had before. I have a 17" 2010 MBP, never had a problem like this with any of my 4 former laptops.
Very slight pressure on the middle of the bottom where the ram compartment is, makes the computer freeze and I have to shutdown hard. After that it makes the "3 beeps at startup" to indicate bad ram.
Well, I tested the ram and it's fine, so I know that it's the pressure touching something it's not supposed to. The pins that hold the cover from touching the logic board etc. doesn't seem to do the job very well.
I have never seen this problem before, is there a fix, or do I have to change the bottom cover?
Right now I can't move my MBP when it's turned on, that will in 99 % of the cases apply just a bit amount of pressure to the bottom case, enough to make it freeze and shutdwon.
Not very portable right now ;-<

It sounds like either a connector is loose, something is shorting when you put pressure there, or maybe a bad solder connection. You should take it in to the Genius Bar for a free eval. If you're under Applecare the repair is free too.

  • Text on bottom cover wear out

I tear out the old Bodyguardz last night as I replace a new Bodyguardz. When tearing the old one everything fine, however when I apply the new one and repositioning the film the text on the bottom cover wear out.
The bottom cover is not scratch, but now the text not able to see.
Did someone has similar experience? Or the text eventually wear out by use?

You need to complain to the maker of Bodyguardz. This isn't a Mac problem, because Apple doesn't warrant that anything you stick onto your MBP won't pull the painted lettering off when you remove it. If reading the text on the bottom of your machine is important to you, replace the bottom cover with a new one, and avoid using Bodyguardz on it.
