Bottom Line: Ripping DVD's into the Video iPod

Ok, lets make one thread that just posts solutions on how to get DVD's onto the video iPod.
Posting links to software and images of working iPod would be a huge help.
Let's get it settled, once and for all.

1.Get one of many programs to rip through the security encoding and get the video into a usable video file.
2.Convert to MPEG-4 with Videora or PSP Video 9. (Or preferably H.264 when someone's got that ironed out.)
3.Import to iTunes.
4.Sync.
The end.

  • How do I place an arrow into the video?

I am using FCE pretty well. However, how do I insert an arrow as an overlay into the video. When I select objects, all I get are squares, circles. Why isn't this as simple as keynote?

There is another way but can't take you too far. At the bottom right-hand corner of the Viewer window is an A with a drop down arrow. Click the arrow and select Matte. Do it again and select Shape, Circle. Drag the resulting video in the Viewer to the V2 line in the timeline. Now you can play with the size, opacity, etc using the Controls tab in the Viewer. But I gotta leave you there because it is as far as I've gotten. I know you can make a moving circle to show movement over, for instance, a map. But I'm stalled out right here.

I have a football game recorded on a DVD+R disc that I was trying to view on my MacBook using DVD Player.  The video comes onto the screen, but immediately freezes, and then disappears.  An error message comes up saying that DVD player unexpectedly quit.  My MacBook operating system is Mac OS X, version 10.5.8.  DVD Player is App version 5.0.3, framework version 5.0.7.
However, the DVD+R works on both my Dad's and my brother's laptops.  My Dad's laptop is an iBook G4 with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.3.9.  The DVD Player is version 4.0.  My brother's laptop is a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X operating system, version 10.7.2.  The DVD Player is App version 5500.26.1 and framework version 5.5.0.  The DVD+R plays fine on their laptops, but will not play on mine.

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

  • Is there a way to create a .dmg file for a DVD inserted into the system

I am wondering if Snow Leopard has integrated any tools that can create a .dmg file for the CD or DVD inserted into the system?
If not, any recommendations for freeware 3rd party tools? Thanks

Insert the disc you want to create the .dmg from, then choose the disc in the left hand pane of Disk Utility. From the File menu, choose New > Disk Image from (name of disc).
EDIT: This is basically how it's done; however, there may be other steps involved, depending on the type of disc you're trying to copy and what your goals are with the .dmg. If you provide more details about what you're trying to achieve, maybe we can help you further.

  • Netflix would change aspect ratio 30 seconds into the video.

I'm having an issue with Netflix video streaming changing the aspect ratio from wide format to standard within 30 seconds into the video.  Doesn't happen on the sony PS3, macbook air, ipad2.  Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Before:
    30 Seconds into the show

This same thing is happening to me - AppleTV switches to 4:3 ratio 30 seconds into a movie. Then, when I try to start the video from the beginning, it then starts incorrectly (with black bars on the side and a compressed picture). I have the ATV2 connected to a brand new Samsung 32" LCD in my bedroom. This only happens when Netflix is playing on the ATV, and it happens even if I hook it up to one of my other televisions. This leads me to believe that the problem is with the ATV, not my television. The strange thing is that it was working fine for a couple of days, and then suddenly started doing this.

are you using the iOS camera? if you do, visit your apple store for further help, sounds like a hardware problem.
    or:
hold home and lock button pressed until your iphone restarts.
if that didn't help, visit your apple store.
if you are not using the iOS camera, delete that app.

  • Converting Videos for the Video Ipod?

ok i just bought the 60G Video IPOD, i downloaded a video from Itunes just to see if it works, i downloaded a video from Limewire, and when i went to add it to the ipod it says that it could not be added or using with the Ipod why? I need to converte it from the itunes Library? Ok once it gets downloaded into the limewire folder and i add it to itunes, what do i do next before adding it to the ipod, i am not spending 1.99 for each video that will be like 1,000 i spoend on videos..lol
Thank you so much for your help

I just got the Video iPod also. So far not too happy about the file type restrictions...after all I spent a year encoding MY entire DVD collectin and was thrilled not to have to take a laptop with me on travel.
    CONVERTING MOVIES for ViPOD.
You have to have the updated Quicktime 7.0.3.
AND then you have to open the file in QT.
    Go to EXPORT.
Select "Movie to iPod" which will convert the file to an .m4v
The movie will be saved in this mode as 320x240.
However, this process is incredibly slow. It's been trying to convert a movie in .mp4 to .m4v and it's been two hours now and it looks like it's only 15% done.
There has to be a faster conversion tool out there. For viewing a few flicks...I would have to spend days just to get 3 or 4 movies on my Video iPod.
MY SUGGESTION: DONT BUY the ViPod YET!!!! Wait till the holidays are over or give an Apple Gift Card.

  • Transferring DVD + G to a video ipod

    Hi.
This is a really specific question....
I am a musician working in schools and one of the projectsI run is called Show in a day. (For details go to www.davidtobin.co.uk and click "Projects")
I am looking for a way to avoid taking a large musical rig out to school and i had an idea...
I currently take a "Karaoke" rig out, because i show children lyrics in a DVD+G format or CDG+G format which allows them to follow lyrics karaoke style more easily than reading black on white. I am trying to find a way not to have to take a big DVD player, seperate big speakers, laptop, projector etc etc.
My idea is if the video ipod could either read or convert DVD+G i could play everything from the video ipod through an IM7 base and take the S-Video out to a projector - and i would have picture and sound carryable by one person and looking & sounding great!
    So
    1) Is it possible?
    2) If not, any ideas?????
I know it's a bit specific, but this is a mac forum after all
    David Tobin

Closest I think you will get is using subtitles.
I believe media fork/handbrake works with subtitles-placing them into the picture.
I do not believe any software will work with DVD+G. Then again I have never heard of that format and have no idea how it works-so who knows?

  • Down loaded a new video and it won't load onto the video ipod

I downloaded an episode of Baby Einsteins for my son to watch on the video ipod. iTunes gives the message "Pirates Treasure" was not copied onto the iPod because it cannot be played on this iPod. What more can I do. I have a new 12" powerbook, the newest video iPod with plenty of space, and all of the latest software updates! It's frusturating that service for this type of problem is so hard to get. Can anyone help me?

  • Any compatible USB 2.0 cards available for the video iPod?

Any compatible USB 2.0 cards available for the video iPod?
    Dual 867
    512 RAM
    OS X 10.4.3
I installed a TECHGEAR USB 2.0 card, the iPod shows that is active on the bus, but does not show on the desktop, or in iTunes. Epson printer works, but SanDisk does not. I have read about deep sleep issues too. USB 1.0 is painfully slow. After using FW to update our 15 Gig iPods for sooooo looooong this is one BIG step backwards. Dupid genius at the Apple store in Arden Fair said this iPod would work with a PCI 2.0 card. I am a little ticked after purchasing videos for my wife with the promise a card would work. I know, should have done more research and not asked the genius.
    Merry Christmas,
    Shawn Bockoven

Well, I now have a working USB 2.0 connection. BUT!!!! The lame OS X 10.4.3 sleep issue has raised its ugly head. How about supporting long time users Apple? Let's talk about supporting third party cards. I run a TV station and love my Mac's, but this legacy USB 2.0 stuff just stinks!
WAIT!!! My Mac is only fours years old. Is that too old? I just want to make my dual 867 sleep! Why can’t I put make my dual 867 sleep after installing a third party card? All the new Mac’s at the station work just fine. Now convince my 62-year-old mom to switch.

  • Is the video ipod bad

There are so many bad posts about the video ipod i want to know if it is worth the money? seriously

I've had mine for a week now, and really have had very little problems. Between it and locatiofree tv I got for my psp those two new toys have been taking a good potion of my time.
Ok, so without further ado here is how I spent the past week.
    1) searching for a video converter for my pc, brought 3 , none worked for h264 video all worked for mp4 video,
    2) downloaded and sucessfully created videos with freeware encoders.
    3) spent loads of time trying to figure out why encoders didn't work. I'm a software engineer,
    4) brought 2 and downloaded 3 free mac converters. all worked as advertised.
    5) converted about 20 tivo/replaytv mpegs to mp4/h264 and uploaded to the ipod.
    6) developed a nightly batch encoding scheme utilizing our underused mac mini
    7) connected ipod to tv set with av cables
    8) figured out a way to stream ipod videos to psp via locationfree tv basestation
In short some fuustration and a lot of fun... How was your week???
