Bought a Macbook Pro used with wiped HDD

Hello, I recently bought a used early 2011 Macbook pro. It had Snow Leopard installed but was wiped clean before the privious owner sold it to me. So I am wondering what I can do to reinstall an OS. Obviously I want the most up to date but it seems that the only hard install disk availabe lis Snow Leopard. I tried running it as the start up disk but it stays at the apple logo screen and beeps three times over and over. In internet recovery mode there is the option to reinstall Lion from the internet, but since I have never bought Lion I cannot do that. So I am left with a useless laptop. What do I do to get any OS reinstalled? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Noah

If the system was originally shipped with Snow Leopard that is where you will have to start. Once you get the system running on SL you can then upgrade to Mavericks.
3 beeps on boot is an indication of a memory problem. Did  you see the seller run the system before you bought it? If there is a warranty contact the seller.
If there is no warranty then you will need to troubleshoot the problem. You can check to make sure the memory is seated and try re-seating it to see if that makes a difference. If there is more then one stick you can try each stick on its own to see if one of them is bad.
That should get you started, post back if you need more help.

You need to purchase an external drive and start moving some files to it or you can try trashing some files that you no longer need.
Download OmniDiskSweeper and see where your larger files are... you can move them to an external drive or trash them: it's up to you.
I would also begin, since it's obviously don't have backups, a backup scheme or two. See Most commonly used backup methods.
    Good luck,

  • New Macbook Pro i7 with 750G HDD - Tech Wants to Upgrade to 250g SSD? Is this right?

I really need some guidance and advise! I am NOT a computer savy person so please forgive my ignorance!
I just purchased my daughters MacBook Pro i7 with a 750g HDD. It is basically brand new and has been used less than 40 hours. Still under warranty.
I will be using this laptop for work and need to run Microsoft Word, Excel, surf the net, and have a large volume of pictures and videos to transfer over for my job. I have always kept these images on my computer and would like to continue to do so moving forward. I do not want a separate hard drive if I can do without.
I went to a computer store about having the data moved from my old MAC onto the new one or place it on a Time Capsule. The computer technician advised me not to use the Time Capsule but to just move everything over to the new MAC. He wants to take out my current HDD which is like new and replace it with a 250G SSD to make my computer faster and perform better. The HDD drive will be removed because I don't want to give up the CD drive that I do use with work.
Is this a wise move? What would be the benefit of replacing this hard drive? I just need feedback on whether or not this is truly an upgrade or if I should find a new computer technician!

For faster boot and shut down times and faster response in resource intensive applications you will lose 500 GB storage.  For web browsing, emails, text editing and the like, there will be no noticeable difference in the operation of the MBP with a SSD.
For the faster speeds that a SSD affords, I personally am more interested in having the extra storage.  If you really think that speed is important, install a !TB SDD.  For the average user, speed is not a critical factor.  The fiscally prudent thing to do is keep what you have, use it for a while and make a decision based on actual use rather than on the opinion of a person who may or may not have the same views as you.
    Ciao.

  • I just bought a Macbook Pro 15'' with the retina display, but my webcam is extremely slow... what could be the reason?

When I'm using my webcam, for instance with FaceTime it's very slow... What can it be?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Just bought a MacBook Pro - use native apps or web based?

I just got my Mac Book Pro and am setting it up.
I have an iphone and use the native apps on there with google apps synced via microsoft exchange, but on my previous (PC) laptop I accessed all these via the Chrome browser and got my notifications that way.
I cant decide how to set it up, use all the native apps, mail, calendar and contact and sync it (which will use space on my laptop) or leave it all in the cloud and use Chrome again?
What is best practice and are there advantages and disadvantages of either/both options?
    Mike

I would suggest using the native apps - they work perfectly well with google apps. Integration!

  • Bought a MACBOOK Pro with Ipod Touch in August...Before New Release...!!!

I just bought a Macbook Pro 15" with an Ipod Touch using Apple's student discount program.
Not knowing they were coming out with new models of both.
Does anyone know if there's any chance of me exchanging for the newer models?
Is there an email contact for customer relations in Toronto or Canada?
I just bought an IMAC 24" too...last Thursday...I heard they are releasing new ones as well.
Being a PC user for the last 10years...wanting to try something new and this happens...
    PLS help.

If you'd purchased it within 14 days of a new release, you'd stand a chance. But nearly 3 months, not a hope, I'm afraid.
Do you think Sony, HP or Microsoft would give you an exchange after nearly 3 months? Why would Apple be any different?
The MacBook Pro you purchased is a great computer and will last for a long time. Don't get distracted by new shiny objects.

  • I am so new to Mac. I just bought this Macbook Pro. No Disks or anything. I need to completely wipe and reinstall. Is there anyplace I can download the disks to burn to dvd to do a complete wipe and reinstall?  I'm running 10.6.8. Or maybe a later version

I guess you can see how new i am to this, I typed my whole question in the subject. Any way, i bought this macbook pro used, no disks, need to do a complete wipe and reinstall. is there anywhere i can download the install disks to burn to dvd? Or buy either one, or maybe even a later version? Im running 10.6.8 currently.  Thanks in Advance! Terry

First determine what system you really have.
Apple menu -> About This Mac.
If it is 10.7, you don't need installer discs, because there is a recovery partition:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848
If indeed it is 10.6.something then you'll want to call AppleCare for the discs.
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If they determine the machine is older than 10.6's initial release (August 28, 2009), you'll want to purchase 10.6 retail, and/or 10.7 retail from the Apple Store.
    Regardless, backup your data first*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And read the benefits of both 10.6 and 10.7:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
and determine which can run on your machine, and decide which you want to have.

Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

I just bought a macbook pro and want to use my own iCloud account for my iPhone. How do I sign off of the current account on my iPhone and sign in with my own iCloud account i set up my mac?

On your phone, Go to "Settings", "iCloud", scroll to the bottom and "sign out."  Assuming you have the the account password/security info of the current account, it will delete everything iCloud related upon your approval (don't worry, everything will remain in the cloud.)  Once signed out, in the same settings location (under "Settings", "iCloud") sign in using your Apple ID and Password.
    Hope this helps.

I've just bought a Macbook Pro 15" and I'm trying to use Photoshop, but the resolution its displaying the images at for 100% are too small. I have to design for the web, so need to be intricate with detail, but I'm finding it adjusts the resolution of the image right down. (I mean you can see the image clearly, but it's too small to edit). When I look at Safari and see a web page at 100% it's clear, but the same page displayed in Photoshop CC appears 50% of the size (even though it says it's 100%)   If I move the application window to another screen it adjusts it correctly  – leaving all the pallettes, menus and tools correctly sized as they are on the retina display   Is there some way to adjust the way Photoshop CC displays images so it is more consistent with what you actually see?   There doesn't seem to be any answer on the Adobe forum, so hopefully someone here can shed some light.  MacBook Pro with Retina display, 15", OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), Photoshop CC 2014

I tested both ways. With "open in low resolution" ckecked the size of the images is cool, but it is low-resolution including Photoshop appearance.
If "open in low resolution" is unckecked the appearance is good but the very small size.
See the image below. It has 650 x 732 px, 72 dpi. The font of the text "Neste aniversário ..." is with 18pt.

  • I lost my Hard disk and had to replace it, how can I get another copy of lion OS, P.S. I bought my macbook pro with preinstalled Lion OS

I lost my Hard disk and had to replace it with a new one, how can I get another copy of lion OS, as the guy at the serive center installed 10.6 for me.
P.S. I bought my macbook pro with preinstalled Lion OS

If you have a way to wipe 10.6.8 off, you can then reboot your machine (with no OS) and since your system came preinstalled with Lion, Internet Recovery should occur which will boot to Apple's servers into a Recovery HD for you to redownload and install Lion.
To be safe I would first make a clone of the current installation using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. This way you have a way to recover.

These Apple TVs are 2nd and 3rd generation loaded with the latest software. I can succesfully transmit from my itunes on my Macbook pro to both Apple TVs, but I can not see the airplay icon on the taskbar. Can someone help?
