Bought a new computer, how do I move my library full of referenced files?

I have my Aperture library on my laptop with all masters referenced and stored in a folder called "raw" in my home directory.
I'm trying to move everything over to my new Mac Pro, but I'm having trouble. I copied the folder of referenced masters into the home directory of my new computer, copied the library, preferences, etc. Of course when I start Aperture on the Mac Pro, it can't find the masters because the volume name is different. So I thought I could relocate the masters, but when I do this for an image, the thumbnail turns grey and in the viewer I get an "Unsupported Image Format" error. This happens for both JPG and NEF files.
Any suggestions? I have a rather complex folder structure with many projects, so I don't want to export individual projects.
Thanks,
steve

Hi,
I haen't done this myself from a computer to another
When You mention you used "relocate masters"... how did you connect both computers? was one in Target disk mode. via ethernet?.
did you try this:
- in the "sharing"' pref panel, give your mac pro the name of your old computer.
- start your old mac in firewire target disk mode (no name conflict as your old computer is not being used: only its HD)
- copy the library to the new drive in the Mac Pro
- launch AP on the mac pro and select the copied library. relaunch. because the computer name is identical and the disk from your old computer is mounted, you should see AP finding its referenced masters.
- initiate the relocation of masters now
(be aware that I haven't tried this, this is just an educated guess)
(also, if you have a complex folder strcuture, try relocating just one or twwo pix and observe the new structure. Aperture cannot reproduce several custom-named folders in a new structure, unfortunately...
PS : while we'(re here, I advise you to format several drives as a RAID 0 array inside the mac pro in order to get a good responsivity from Aperture... this makes an amazing difference... most photographers disregard the value of fast storage. by fat I mean faster than a single device... hoping I'm legible...

  • New Computer - How do I move my library from Old to New Computer?

    Hi,
I bought a new computer and want to transfer all my music from the old one to the new one.
This is what I did so far:
Copied the entire iTunes directory from my old computer into an external hard drive.
Then loaded the entire iTunes folder from the hard Drive to the existing iTunes directory in the new Laptop.
Now, none of the songs showed up in my iTunes Library screen.
So I had to basically drag them from windows explorer into the iTunes Library screen. However, none of the album artwork, or ratings, etc, are there (i copied all those files from old to new computer as they were in the original directories in my old computer, I think)... It looks like i'll have to do all that work again!
Is there a way to do this one shot??
    Thanks!
    RJ.

Launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to the folder you copied.

You cannot transfer from the iPhone to the computer.
You must move the contents of your old computer to the new one directly.
Use an external hard drive perhaps or restore your old computer backup to your new computer.
The iPhone is not the source of your data, that is the computer, the iPhone is only a slave device to iTunes.

  • I just bought a new computer, how can I start syncing with this computer without erasing everything already on my iphone?

I just bought a new computer, how can I start syncing with this computer without erasing everything already on my iphone?
Everytime I try to use the option sync manual it wants me to erase everything.
    Please help

The iPhone can be synced to one and only one computer at a time. Before you "marry" it to your new computer, be sure your new computer contains all the old computer's information. When you sync the iPhone to a new computer, it will be erased first. Then, whatever is on your iTunes Library will be synced to the iPhone.
Read: iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
You can also copy its previous backup from the old computer to the new one, then "restore from backup".
    From iTunes: About iOS backups
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

Backup with this User Tip, restore the library to the new computer using the same tool, keep the backup up-to-date in future. Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer need to access protected content on it.
As to your issues with compilations albums select all the tracks, set the Album Artist to Various Artists and on the options tab set Part of a compilation to Yes. See Grouping tracks into albums for details.

  • New computer, how can I move all my music from my old computer?

  • Just bought a new computer How do I get all my music from old computer to the new one?

Bought a new computer with Windows 8.  How do I get all the music off my old computer transferred to the new one.  All the music on the old computer is in the cloud.

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods discussed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527.

  • Just bought a new computer--how do I transfer itunes to the new computer?

Just bought a new computer(windows 7).  How do I transfer itunes to windows 7 from windows xp?

You don't have to transfer from your iphone5 to itunes on your computer.
Log into itunes store on your computer using the same appleId you used to purchase those music, go to music library, and you should see all your previously purchased music with a cloud and down arrow symbol next to them.
Click on the cloud, and that song will be downloaded to your computer. Try to look around to see if there's any way to do all downloads at one command.
You should also go back to your old computer and deauthorize that computer from your itunes account, then authorize your new computer as one of the 5 allowed to playback itunes content.
The behavior of itunes may have changed with recent updates. In the past, when I plugged in my iphone to a new computer, I do remember being asked by itunes if I wanted to transfer purchases over. Give it a try and see what happens.
But whatever you do, if your current itunes library is still empty, DO NOT say yes to sync with iphone. It would wipe out your itunes library on your iphone because you would be syncing a blank libary over to the iphone. Sync iphone with your computer itunes library only after the computer's library has more content than your iphone's library. That's just to play it safe.

If you Google ipod nano 6th generation manual, you can download the PDF manual. Here's a quote from page 19:
Transfer purchased content to another computer:
1 Open iTunes on the other computer and choose Store > Authorize This Computer.
2 Connect iPod nano to the newly authorized computer.
3 In iTunes, choose File > Transfer Purchases from iPod.
Songs that are not from the iTunes store can be copied to the new computer, and you just have to do File>Add to Library to get them into iTunes. And if you don't plan to continue using your old computer, you should deauthorize it because you only get 5 authorizations for iTunes store purchases, and this will cancel out the authorization on the old computer.

  • Bought a new computer - how do I access my old library and play list on another drive?

I bought a new comuter - Windows & and had my Itunes library on a USB Hard drive.  How to I get ITunes to open that library with all the songs being available in Music?  Any ideas would be helpful.

You are going to want to plug in the USB in your new computer, then drag the folder containing your music into the iTunes window.  This should update your iTunes with those songs.
To make a copy of the songs, so that you no longer need your USB, go into iTunes > File >  Preferences > then last tab, there should be a checkbox that says "copy file to iTunes music folder when adding to library".
    Hope that helps.
