Bought a new iMac on June 25 but Apple says it was registered in March !

Hi
This is my first posting here but I've been a Mac user for years.
I bought an iMac i3 on 25 June from a local shop (Comet). I was hoping to get the free update to Lion but when I entered my iMac's serial number it came up as invalid.
After speaking to Apple Support they said it had been registered in March so a free upgrade was ineligible but I could email my receipt to [email protected] and wait a few days for their systems to be updated. This call was on 21 July.
I've just called Apple Care for an update and been told it could take weeks for the registration date to be changed. At this point I lost it a little bit as I only have until 19 August to complete the update and I'll be away for two weeks from 14 August.
To top it all off I asked if I would be notified by email (MobileMe) when the change had been done to be told that I would have to call back or check online at random intervals. For one of the largest IT companies in the world, I find it hard to believe that Apple do not have the systems in place to do something so simple as generate an email when a case has been closed.
Has anyone got any constructive advice other than sell all my Apple kit ?
Thanks
Nick

The problem with buying a Mac from a third party - authorized or not - is that Apple "registers" the machine when it is sold to the store (which, in your case, seems to have been in March). Now, when you buy it from an Apple store, they will automatically change that date to reflect the correct one and inform Apple; most authorized sellers will notify Apple as well, but some as well as third party sellers do not. In that case, it is up to the buyer unfortunately to sort things out. Having had to deal with this once myself, I learned that you need to insist that the seller take responsibility and fax the necessary paperwork to Apple. But, you now have it in hand; it will take a little time, but I would not worry at this point. Keep tabs on it though because of your desire to get Lion and, if necessary, contact them a week or so before the offer runs out if you haven't heard anything.
