Bought a new Macbook Pro yesterday, can't connect to home WIFI (Help!)

Hey everyone,
Bought the Macbook Pro 15" yesterday from the states and took it home to British Columbia. So I set everything up, tried connecting to my home router network and it says:
"Unable to join WI-FI Network
This computer was unable to join the WIFI Network you selected. You may have entered an incorrect pass / network name, chosen the wrong type of wireless security, or you may be out of range of the base station."
also, the settings say that "Wi-Fi has the self assigned IP address 169.254.156.214 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
This is really frustrating because the desktop I'm typing this message on is connected to the internet fine, my brother's Macbook is connected fine, so are the various iPad's and iPhones in this household. Everything except for the newly bought Macbook Pro.

Make a couple of phone calls.
iDVD is a “Must Have".   (Yes, it should be included.)
Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.

Most people report that by asking here:   http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
or here:   http://www.apple.com/contact/
they got a free copy of iDVD.
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11 on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

  • MacBook Pro 2010 Can't Connect To Home Wifi

    Hey,
My home was setup with a Cisco Linkysys wireless router (about 2 years old) and at the time the iMac that was hardwired to the router and other devices like an iPod/ iPhone and a Nintendo DS etc. would be able to access the home network.  I arrive now (to the parents home) and can't seem to gain access to the network.  I was able to connect once and use the internet but the next day couldn't connect again.  We've confirmed many times the password is correct, reset the linkysys router and tried again but failed.  I would see the router and have full or high signal but upon entering I would get either an "Invalid password" or "Connection timedout" error response.  I also tried Network Diagnostics and Assistant walk throughs under the Assit Me... button but didn't work.  I've also tried choosing the network in Network Preferences under the drop down menu Network Name and entering the password there but to no avail.
Then recently got another wireless router (Airport Extreme, I figured I we could use another one for the home anyway) yesterday, and did the setup and other devices and the hardwired iMac all can connect and use the internet off of it.  I am currented hardwired to it via ethernet and all though I am right next to the new Apple router, and have full bars, I can't connect.  The most I have gotten was being connected with full bars for a few moments and then the exclamation point coming up in the Airport icon.  BTW, for the past 2 days I have been connecting to free wifi at another public place so I'm really not sure what is going on.  Both networks (the Linksys created one and now the Apple one) are protected via WPA2 Personal.  My notebook is only a year old show that should be fine too, no?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a trouble shooting dead end from my mind's perspective.
    Thanks,
    Brian

I have the same issue. Was working fine until Saturday when Rogers reset my modem because we lost our internet connection. Our modem is direct connected to our PC and we connec with the Macbook through wifi.
When the modem rebooted we got an IP error and they had to do a renew and release. Since then - no wifi on macbook.
every time we try to join our home network it gives a password wrong error. The password is not wrong. Airport is a solid yellow light. Ethernet is red.
I am not great with macs and I have scoured the net and I cannot figure this out

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

  • Thought I bought a new macbook pro - How can I be sure it is new?

I purchased a macbook pro (MA611LL-A) from a person who tells me he is an authorized reseller. I purchased my imac 20" from him and it came via Amazon about a year ago. So, I thought I would get a new macbook pro 17" 2.33ghz from him as well.
I was surprised when I opened the box to find that it was repackaged and all of the seals were broken and retaped. There was a small dent in the lid, the software was opened and not wrapped in plastic. The corners of the lid do not close flush as if someone attempted to open it without releasing the latch properly. There are some other minor details as well. But the bottom line is that it is not new.
When I booted it up the welcome stuff appears, but that can be reset. What I need to know is, if there is a way to tell by hardware, software or other information or process if this is a macbook pro that was previously owned and or used and maybe the extent of the use, such as amount of hours, dates, etc...
Any help is appreciated. I hate being ripped off!
    Thanks

An authorized reseller would not be selling computers from Amazon AFAIK.

All those things you mentioned are how you can know a computer is new. If it doesn't have all the little stickers intact and stuff is opened then it's not new, but you know that already.

I don't think there is any way to know for sure how much use it's gotten, but you could maybe check the battery cycle count for some idea. In any case, it's not new so you should go ahead and consider what options you have available, like returning the machine for a refund, or contacting your credit card company, etc.

  • My brand new Macbook PRO i5 can't connect to internet after sleep? It works fine after reboot.

I have a brand new Macbook PRO with the latest OS and the latest EFI. I haven't installed any 3'rd party products except Moneywell for my private finances. After a couple of days it couldn't connect to internet after sleep. I run the network diag and it says the connection is OK. Log out/in doesn't help. I have to reboot everytime it wakes up after sleep. Any clue?

I am having the exact same problem.  It started with 10.7, was fixed with 10.7.1, then came back again with 10.7.2.

  • My new macBook Pro Retina won't connect to my wifi.  Password IS CORRECT.

I just got a new-in-box retina MacBook Pro.  It sees my wifi network--signal is max--but the base station will not accept the 100% correct password.  Other devices have no trouble connecting.
I'm setting it up for a PC switcher.  What an embarrassment!
We're trying to connect to a Time Capsule base station which I added to my system last week.  No other devices have trouble connecting.
    Suggestions?

    -->Try Connect to Other.
    Done.  Failed.
    -->Try clearing the preferred network.
If I understand you correctly, there is no preferred network.  It's a new machine, it's never connected to anything.
-->Please update your signature with your installed operating system for the questionable MacBook Pro, or indicate what Mac OS X version you are running, so we can tell you if there are additional things to look for.
Thanks for alerting me to this. I added some more stuff to my sig.
It's a new Retina MacBook Pro, running Mavericks 9.0.  I just unboxed it this morning.

  • 2013 Macbook Pro will not reliably connect to home WiFi.

This problem began about a month ago.  I've owned this computer for 2 months and had no problem the first month.  Now, when I turn it on it searches for the wifi signal and my wifi's SSID is visible but it doesn't connect, even when I select it from the list. It stops searching and the ! icon appears.  If I restart the computer it will usually connect then automatically but at times I've had to restart it 2 or 3 times before this happens.  And it can happen multiple times each day if I shut down the computer.  At times though it works normally so the problem is intermittent.  My Iphone 5 has no problem connecting with my router.  I believe this began happening about the time I added a Brother wireless printer.  I also now occassionally get a message that there are 2 devices sharing the same IP address and don't know what that's about or if it's related to the problem.  This is my first Mac (and first wireless printer) and I should also add that I consider myself a technodummy.  Help in solving this perplexing and annoying problem would be greatly appreciated.

  • I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant and my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.

I recently bought a new macbook pro and set it up using the migration assistant from my mac mini.  I can't get the text message forwarding feature to work with both computers.  It keeps saying that I only have 2 devices setup, my iPad and my macbook pro.  When I mess with the setting on my mac mini, it goes from saying that that is one of the devices to my macbook pro being the 2nd device.  I think that something happened as a result of my using the migration assistant and now it thinks that my macbook pro and my mac mini are one and the same computer.  Any ideas?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

I assume that you don't have the installation discs, so:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold command + s key down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get a text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. You will go through the setup process again, create a new admin account, login to it and then change your existing account password or whatever else you need to do. You can delete the account you made in this process, or not.

  • HT4796 Hi, I've just bought a new Macbook Pro and started migrating from PC but the remaining time is about 70 hours long, I just wanted to know if that timing is normal and if not, does leaving running my MacBook that time can affect it?

70 hours...  no, it's not normal but it can't hurt your Mac to be running for that amount of time.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro with OS x 10.8.2 because my PC died.  I have well over 3,000 tunes and they are WMA and WAV.  Can anyone help me with advice to convert them to iTunes format (MP3).

  • Hi all, i just bought the new macbook pro and just want to know if i can install Vista or Xp on it?

Hi all, i just bought the new macbook pro and just want to know if i can install Vista or Xp on it?

    Yes.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.  Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows. You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
