Bought AirPort Express - swap for Apple TV?

Hi all. Bought an AirPort Express today, and after several hours of messing around, I finally managed to get it working.
Streaming tunes works great, but I probably should've realised I wouldn't be able to stream audio from TV shows which I've bought from iTunes. I buy quite a lot of shows on iTunes, and after getting the thing home, I decided I might be better to refund the AirPort Express, and upgrade to Apple TV so I can watch iTunes-purchased TV shows on my home TV.
However, the one thing stopping me from making this decision straight away, is that my wireless has been significantly more reliable through the AirPort Express than it was through my router's wireless. My router's fairly old, and using its wireless with my new MBP was a nightmare with numerous dropped connections - in fact, I'd taken to using an ethernet cable at home rather than wireless. Since switching to the AirPort express, the connection has been perfect.
So my question is, can I use Apple TV to share my internet connection wirelessly as I'm currently doing? Or do I need to hang on to the AirPort Express for this?
Thanks!

If you want the AirPort Express as a wireless access point for your MBP, then you would need to keep it. The ATV can't do that.
You could still connect your MBP video output to your TV with an adapter cable and watch it there and use your Bose headphones for audio, or run the audio output to the TV or a receiver. If you connect your MBP to your TV and use Front Row, the experience won't be much different from an actual Apple TV.

I just bought a new Motorola modem. Do I need to reconfigure my Airport Express? For some reason we have WiFi even though the amber light is blinking.

Typically, when changing out networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power reset of all of your networking equipment.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Stream music via Airport Express vs. Apple TV

I purchased some Vanatoo Powered Speakers (amazing speakers) with Digital Audio in and was planning on streaming music from my iphones, iPad, mac, etc... via Airplay. I purchased an Airport Express and plugged it to the Speakers with an optical cable.
I have a network with an Airport Extreme and good signal, however, whatever the channel I selected, the music keeps dropping out every now and then during playback. I wanted to see if the problem would also occur with my Apple TV. I plugged it to the speakers and the problem was GONE! The Apple TV works much better and no dropped signal! Now I need to replace my Airport Express with an Apple TV! I don't understand why Apple cannot fix the problem of Airplay playback on Airport Express!

I have a same problem using the Airport Express to my DAC, but Apple TV is doing without any drop out.
I don't know the reason, but there is a suggestion in audiophile to install a 3rd party software, e.g. Audiravana plus, which allows the music to go to memory (RAM) and a slightly delay to play.
You can download for a free trail, only purchase if it helps.

  • Is airport express needed for an airprinter

is airport express needed for an airprinter? I'm confused about the concept. Pls help

The concept is that you need a printer that is AirPrint compatible if you want to be able to print from an iPhone or iPad, etc without adding additional software.
Apple updates the AirPrint compatible list from time to time, but you can get a general picture of AirPrint compatible printers here:

  • Since updating to Yosemite my airport express (used for airplay) connects for a short period then drops, the error message "An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay device "Kitchen". The host cannot be reached."  Has anyone else had this?

I'm having the same issue.  Haven't found a workaround.  I use a main TimeCapsule as my main router, also have another TimeCapsule that extends the network, three Airport Express and an AppleTV.  For whatever reason, the two AirportExpress that I have in a different rooms cut out.  I only have 600 square foot apartment so it's not that big, the signal should be strong enough.  Airport Utilitiy reports the signal strength to be strong on all devices.
I'm using all new equipment, a new MacPro for my music, new TimeCapsules, new Airport Express, new everything with the latest Yosemite software.  Very frustrating.  My Airplay used to work very nice and now I'm constantly having issues and restarting my network.  I did a fresh install of all my software on my MacPro when I got it in January so it's not as if it's an old machine with old software, everything is new within the last 6 months.
The only workaround I found so far is to unplug the devices and to plug them back in.  Since upgrading to Yosemite, I'm restarting my Airport Express at least twice a week.  Very annoying.

  • Airport Express + External HD + Apple TV

I have an Airport Express and an Apple TV and I was thinking about getting an external hard drive to plug into the USB port of the Airport Express so I can stream movies to my Apple TV...the only thing is I am not exactly sure how to do this. I plan on backing up/burning my DVD's using handbrake and then putting them on the HD. Is there a thread that can give me some guidance?

Sorry, but you won't be able to do this as the AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) USB port only supports printers, not hard drives.

In the good old days of Snow Leopard, an open Finder folder had a border along the bottom of the window which could show the number of items in that window and the total available space on the hard disk or partition that folder resides on. That bottom border is gone in Lion and those two bits of information are gone with it. Is that what you're talking about? If so, I'd like to learn how to get it back too and "Show Item Info" is not the way.

  • Airport Express added for iTunes

I've got my AEB up-and running in a N network.
Now I would like to add an Airport Express wirelessly for Airtunes purposes.
I've read the document "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" and I'm still not sure about the configuration.
How should I configure the Airport Express to connect to the existing N network.
There are several possibilities: remote, relay, WDS, extending ...
Which one to choose and why?
Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

    William,
I just added an Airport Express N w/ AirTunes to my existing Network that has an AirPort Extreme N. I initially added it as an extension to my network, but my Internet connection dropped frequently. This was because the Extreme and Express where physically located too close to one another; therefor I switched the Express to only just join my existing network instead of extending it and haven't had any problems sinces.
I think it really depends on the distance your stereo is from your current base station. If your stereo is on the other side of the house extending it would probably be beneficial; however it they are in the next room from one another I would select to only join the existing network instead of extending it.

  • Airport Express or Airport Extreme better for Apple TV

I currently have an Airport Express router (1st gen).  Among items used on it are two iPhones, two Macs, and an iPad in addition to Apple TV.  Load times for Apple TV are just so-so.  Thus far, I've been connecting to my Macbook Air to watch things downloaded from iTunes, as it's much faster to download contact via Macbook.  I would prefer faster loading and whatnot and have Comcast Blast internet.  Would switching out the Airport Express for an Airport Extreme make a difference in Apple TV performance?  Let me know - thanks.

I was getting lousy connection speeds (between 3 Mbps and 7 Mbps) when I had the Airport Express in another room.  After moving it to the same room as the Apple TV, I get speeds of between 25 Mbps and 33 Mbps.  It seems as though the Airport Express just broadcasts a very weak signal through walls and into adjacent rooms.  Would the Airport Extreme broadcast a much stronger signal?
Now, the performance of the Apple TV is much better, but still not flawless.  For instance, last night, I was trying to watch a TV episode, and it wouldn't load.  I got a message saying that iTunes experienced an error.  At 9am this morning, it works perfectly.  Does iTunes just get overloaded with users at peak times?

  • My Airport Express units and Apple TV are disappearing from my network for Airplay

I'm using a BT Home Hub (third generation) as the centre point of my network. The Airport Express Units, and the Apple TV, are connected to it wirelessly, using the 'Join A Wireless Network' option in the setup.
Although the units are visible on the network, they disappear from the Airplay menu on iOS devices and my MacBook Pro, and need to be rebooted to bring them back.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be?
The Apple TV Is now cabled to the router, which rectified a performance issue I had with it whereby films being streamed would stop periodically.
Prior to this, I had the devices wirelessly connected to, and extending, an Airport Extreme network, being broadcast from my Time Capsule. I had to change this however, as the Airport Express units did not play music smoothly and would also disappear from the Airplay menu. I figured that the Time Capsule was at fault, as it's around 4 or 5 years old, and has been showing signs of ageing for a while now, however this new problem has occured since.
I'm tempted to replace the Time Capsule, with a new Airport Extreme unit and external HDD unit to continue wireless Time Machine backup of my three Macs, but don't want to do this if not strictly necessary.

Is there a way to stream internet audio to these devices?

  • I just bought airport express as my router and it's located in the basement, when I got to my 3rd floor in my 2000 square feet home I don't get full signal on my apple device. Should I get airport extreme instead if airport express??

Should I change the express to extrem? Will it have more better signal and range compair to express? Or are they same?

Although the AirPort Extreme should provide a "better signal" due to a different antenna design, there is no guarantee that it will. Most likely the building material in the floors/ceilings between the basement Express and where you want to gain Internet access from it on the third floor may present too much Wi-Fi interference to allow it.
I would first try to see if you have your Express in the best possible position by making Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) measurements from a laptop at each location that you want to access the Internet. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for additional information.

  • How to adjust volume of Airport Express speakers on Apple TV?

    Hello,
I've just setup my Apple TV (bought in November 2012).
The latest version of the firmware allows to select AirPort Express speakers as default audio output. This is great.
While watching Youtube videos or listening iTunes music, I can't find how to adjust the output volume.
I am forced to set it by using the speaker remote control which is quite frustrating.
    Any clues?
I've attached a photo of the Apple TV screen while playing a Youtube video. There's an output selector. But I can't access the volume options.
    Thanks a lot!

Hit "up" two times to bring up "movie menu", then hold down "select", then navigate up and over to "speakers" tab, then down to your "AirPlay speakers", then move slider to right to increase volume
    DONE!!
found it here so i dont deserve the credit but you guys should know - i struggled with this for hours wondering why the streamed audio was so low
