Bought InDesignCS5 to work on old Quark files.  Adobe told me it would open them.  It won't.  Help!!

Seriously, the sales materials said CS5 would open the later versions of Quark.  I inherited some older Quark 6.1 files and only had CS3.  So I called adobe to confirm that CS5 would open the antique files.  They confirmed.  Today, the customer service guy tells me that he is transferring me to someone to tell me how to download the plug in required to open it.  I asked why they didn't explaint THAT in the sales materials.
So I get to tech support and they tell me that I will have to buy it from markzare.com for $200 and they won't support it anyway.  If I would have known that I would have just bought conversion software as I was happy w/ CS3.
SO, does anyone know of an inexpensive or better yet FREE plug-in to solve our problem?  I have files I have to work on Tomorrow!  We're a non-profit organization that helps low-income families and I don't want to spend more $ when I bet some of you know a good plug-in that will save the day!
Thank you!

To ccgharn on behalf of Adobe Systems Incorporated ...
We know of absolutely no sales or support materials - printed, web-based, or otherwise - from Adobe regarding InDesign CS5 that make any claim whatsoever that "CS5 would open later versions of Quark." The support for opening QuarkXPress files in InDesign has not changed in many years. We would be most interested in seeing whatever such "sales materials" from Adobe that make such a claim so that they may be corrected immediately. Please contact me via my e-mail address (mouse over my photo on this post to get that address) with that information.
I apologize for any bad information provided by anyone in Adobe Customer Support or Technical Support who claimed that CS5 would directly open QuarkXPress 6.1 files. It is possible that if you mentioned anything about CS3, they may have misinterpreted your question as to whether CS5 could open CS3 files, which obviously it can. Unfortunately, that doesn't help solve your problem.
What is true is that there is at least one third-party plug-in that we are aware of, from Markzware, that will perform the conversion of the newer QuarkXPress files (newer than 4.x) to InDesign format. We know of no free software to do this.
There is a thirty day return privilege for Adobe software. Assuming that none of the other features of CS5 are that important to you, it may be best to exercise that return privilege as soon as possible per the contributions made by others in this thread.
Again, we would really appreciate it if you could point us to the "sales materials" that provided the bogus information. And if you know the name or ID of the Adobe Customer Support person who "confirmed" that CS5 had upgraded QuarkXPress file opening capabilities, we would appreciate that as well so that the appropriate person may be retrained.

  • Old Quark files converted to Unix Executable

I am trying to open an old Quark file saved on a CD from 2004 and it shows up as a Unix Executable file. I changed the suffix to .indd and .qxd and it says "It is missing a plug-in" or InDesign "may not support the file format." Any ideas on how to restore this to a Quark or, preferably, and InDesign file? Thanks!

The Unix icon only shows up if you don't have a copy of QX on your HD if I'm not mistaken. I don't have Quark on my imac and I see the Unix exe icon myself. Bringing the file over to my machine with Q2ID and QX to see if I can open it. Back in a flash.
I'm back. The icon showed up correctly on my other mac but I only have QX6 and file is QX8. I couldn't open the file. Q2ID wouldn't open it either but it's been several years since I updated the plug in. I only have 2 clients with QX and I showed them both how to export to PDF correctly so I don't use QX at all.
So if you buy the most recent Q2ID you should be good to go.

  • Working with old PDF files - Release Clipping Masks

    Hi Everyone....Please Help Me!
I am regularly required to work with old pdf files for my company, which I have to open in Illustrator to amend and update (we don't have access to the original .ai files).
Whenever I start to work on these files I have to spend ages just unconnecting the elements of the artwork, usually by right clicking and choosing "release clipping mask"
Is there a way to just disconnect everything when you open up an old pdf document in Illustrator?
    Tá mo chroi bhríste
(it has my heart broken - in Irish!)

Always keeping a careful eye on the effects of released clipping masks, the process can be accelerated using the keyboard shortcuts rather than hunt-and-click.
    Open the PDF.
    Ctrl/Cmd+A (Select All)
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt+7 (Object > Clipping Mask > Release) Hold down Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt and tap the 7 key repeatedly to initially release all top-level masks, then continue through the levels of nesting that may be present. With Show Bounding Box and Show Edges active it's easy to see when the releasing has stopped...usually only a few levels.
Deselect, then find one of the orphaned mask objects, which will have a fill and stroke of None. Select it, then choose Object > Select > Same > Fill & Stroke to select all the orphaned mask objects.
    Delete.

I re-downloaded my Photoshop recently and Adobe Bridge no longer displays my Nikon NEF files and Camera Raw will not open them.  I get a message saying that Camera Raw does not support my camera type but it always has in the past.  The bridge no longer shows the picture view of my NEF files.  These are Nikon NEF files from the Nikon 5100 DSLR camera.  How do I fix this?

When you re-installed Photoshop, you also re-installed the version of Camera Raw which shipped with Photoshop - in other words you reverted to an older version of Camera Raw which does not support the D5100.

The D5100 was first supported in Camera Raw version 6.4.
In Photoshop, click Help > Updates to update Camera Raw.

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Is it possible to have cs5 Bridge open cs4 ai files actually in cs4 rather than opening them in cs5

I recently upgraded from mac cs4 to cs5.5. Due to a bug? with cs5 ai illustrator 'Pixel Preview' won't show 1 bit tiff files as it did in cs4 (the workaround is time consuming/wasting). This is a problem for me as most of my files contain them, GGrrrr. Is it possible to have cs5 Bridge open cs4 ai files actually in cs4 rather than opening them in cs5?

Is it possible to have cs5 Bridge open cs4 ai files actually in cs4 rather than opening them in cs5?
Yes, either set the file type association in Bridge prefs for 'ai' at CS4. But it seems somewhat difficult when having newer versions, sometimes whatever pref settings in Bridge or Finder/get info/ open with/you try it keeps opening in the latest version.
In that case either drag and drop the files on the CS4 icon in the dock or with right click mouse menu choose open with and select illustrator CS4.
Although you can only have one version of Bridge open at the time you can have the other suite applications from different version open at the same time.

    You can re-download from iTunes.
Go to the iTunes Store and select "Purchased" from the Quick Links side bar on the right. Go through all the tabs to download again for free

    Hi Dorothea,
Please ensure that you are logged in to your system as administrator and anti-virus is disabled.
Once you click to download Acrobat trial version, 'Adobe Download Assistant' application will start downloading.
Then, run the application and then sign up with your Adobe ID credentials to download Acrobat pro XI from the available list of products.
Let me know if you still face the problem and share the screenshot of the message.
    Hope to get your response.

  • Old Quark files are now Unix Executable Files

I made hundreds of archive CD's with Mac's running OS 9 back in 1990's. They contain Quark files and .tif's. I've referred back to these CD's many many times over the years with no problems. My new iMac has the intel processor. I pop an archive CD in and all the files (with no extensions like "tif" or ".qkd" or ".eps") are now "Unix Executable Files" that won't open.
I simply add an extension to the images files (like ".tif") and they work. HOWEVER, it's not so easy with the Quark files. I add ".qkd" to the file name and it still remains a Unix file.
I launch Quark and try to open the file through the finder and it doesn't work. I took an archive CD to a friends house whose on a G5 and the CD worked properly with no extensions needed to be added.
So I figure the problem is with the Intel/PC based processor. I shouldn't have sold my old G5.
One forum claimed that a program called "File Buddy" did the trick for him. Does anyone have any other ideas other than me buying a non-Intel Mac.
I love our new iMacs but I need these archive CD's to work!
    Thanks

I automatically run OnyX once a week for maintenance, but it didn't help this situation.
Those chores won't reset the LaunchServices database. Go to the Maintenance heading and click on the Reset tab. Turn on the check box for "LaunchServices database" (all other check boxes off). Click the Reset radio button and then Execute. Restart your Mac.
OS X will automatically rebuild the database according to the applications on your hard drive, giving preference to Apple applications as they would be when you first install OS X. So if you have the Acrobat Reader set up to open PDF files, you'll have to do that again as they will be set back to Preview.
Actually it's .qxd not .qkd for Quark XPress file extensions.
That's it! I knew .qkd was wrong, but Quark 6.x won't show you the old extensions when you save a file, and I couldn't remember it (been using InDesign steadily for a while now).

  • Finding old Quark files to delete

    Hello,
We currently have a server that has been having stuff transferred to it since 1997. We switched to InDesign a while back and now I'm looking to make some more room on the server. What I'm hoping to do is do a search to find all Quark files from 2005 and before so I can delete them all. I don't want to find artwork from before that as some of it is actually still in use. Logos/headshots/photos etc... Any help on searching for these would be grateful. Thank you.
    Randy

Thanks Baby Boomer. My problem is there are thousands of these files all with various names, none of which use an extension such as .qxd
    Sample Names:
    redington 1/16
    Amoco 1/8
    Mcdonalds 012599
So when I do a search, I'm not sure what exactly to search for. It seems like the regular finder has more options than spotlight does as far as date range and stuff but I can't figure out how to locate these files in particular.

  • How do I read my old WORD files, it does not seem to recognize them?

I downloaded LION and now my WORD files that I had previoulsy can not be read.  How do I get them back?

Elaine, did you change your name from Andy, or are you a separate person? Most of us don't pay that close attention to the name and since your response seemed to be a continuation of Andy's problem, nobody noticed.
Your question appeared to show absolutely no attempt to try the solutions provided for Andy (who we thought you were). What you did is called "threadjacking," and you did it in a way that made everyone believe you were actually Andy, who's thread you threadjacked.
Being that you are a self-professed novice, here's a very basic thing you need to understand: for the most part, data is separate from applications. So, just because your application (Word in this case) no longer works, that doesn't mean your documents are in jeopardy. You can install Office (Word) 2008 or 2011 and open those documents just fine. You can also use any of the programs mentioned to open those documents. There is nothing to "merge" between the applications.
To move them to your new computer, just copy the documents to an external hard drive, thumb drive, or CD/DVD. You can then move them to your Macbook. You can also turn on file sharing and move them that way, but you probably ought to have a backup since you claim them to be important.
Do you have a backup of your iMac? If not, I would suggest getting an external drive copying all your data onto that, make sure it all reads ok, then do what you need to do with your iMac.
Apple's setup assistant should have asked if you wanted to move stuff from your old computer to your new one, which would have been the best way to do that; however, since it appears you have already set up your account on the new Mac, I'd just back up the iMac, either by straight copy, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper. You can then move the files you want onto your new Mac from the external hard drive.

  • Why are my received file attachments (Office files such as .doc, .docx, .xlsx but also pdf files) corrupted - so that I cannot open them?

For the last month, 90% of the file attachments that I receive by email will not open on my MacBook Pro (2009, running Mac OS 10.7.5). I get assorted messages, but generally saying that the file is corrupt, or the filename contains unacceptable characters. The problem has been generally with Word files (.doc and .docx)], Excel files (.xls and .xlsx) and pdf files.
The bit that I don't understand is that I can open the same email attachments (without any problem) when downloaded on my iMac. And I have recently found that colleagues who received the same emails can open them, and can transfer the files to me (usually by USB stick) … and then I can open them. But I still cannot open the same files received as email attachments on my MacBook Pro.
Which makes me think that the files (email attachments) are somehow being corrupted as they are downloaded?
I installed the Mac OS X Update Combined 10.7.5 in July, so perhaps this was when the problem started? And, although it may be unrelated, around the same time as this problem started, I transferred some files from a colleague's computer on a USB stick and found that the USB stick had picked up a virus/malware, which meant that the stick was dead, and I had to reformat the stick. I scanned my computer (using ClamXav, with the latest updates) and quarantined a file found on the USB stick and on my computer.
Any thoughts on why this might happen, and what I can do to sort it out (as it is making work very difficult - I travel a lot, and rely on being able to open and read files sent from countries all over the world, often by people using old versions of Office software)? I have never had problems in the past, and can't understand why my other computer, and my colleagues, can all open these files, but my laptop will not! Many thanks for any help!

I opened one of the PDF files in notepad and these are the first couple lines:

  • HT2518 now my files r transferred how do i open them

hi i have just purchased a new Macbook Pro (latest model) and have used the Migration program to transfer all of my files from my old PC onto my new Mac but we are unable to locate or open any of the files. We have installed Microsoft office for Mac but we cannot find any of the word/excel files, any photos or emails. How do i locate these files and open them?

If you open the "boot volume" on your Mac, then open the "Users" folder, what folders do you see in it?  There should be a folder for your account, probably one for "Shared", and possibly one for "Guest".  If you see another folder, the missing files may be in that.
You might also use Spotlight to search for those files.  Click on the magnifying glass icon near the right end of the menu bar.  In the resulting field, type something related to one of the missing files, then see if it appears in the results list.
