Bought iphone/registration/previous owners permission?

Hello
I recently made the jump to an iphone 5s after buying one from a friend of a friend.
The phone itself is brand new, never even been switched on and I have a new SIM arriving any day now.
My question is - is there anything the previous owner has to do to enable me to use this phone as my own or as it is a brand new piece of hardware/software that has no user settings in it - is it a blank canvas?
I'm thinking in terms of itunes setup & use, obtaining Network Unlocking Codes (not an immediate concern as I'll be using the same network as he is - but for future reference), anything else I haven't thought of?
If there is anything he needs to do I'd rather know now than having to contact him in 6 months or a year's time?

The phone is still sealed in the box so I know he hasn't set it up. I just wanted to see if it is impacted remotely or does the initial setup that I do determine all of the settings?
As far as apple is concerned will the phone still be his or will the fact that I conduct the setup mean they'll see it as mine.

My husband just bought an iPad 3 off craigslist. The guy said it was restored to factory settings but it will not activate without the previous owners Apple ID and password. Of course now he will not answer his call to get it. Is there anyway around this. Can Apple reset it?

Blacklisted iphone by previous owner

My iphone was recently blacklisted by its previous owner, the matter is sorted now. How do i register the iphone to my name to stop this happening again?

I spoke with my carrier T-mobile UK, they said if the device was purchased second hand then it can't be registered to me. I might just return it to the person i purchased if from.
I purchased it from a person i knew in my town so that i can hold him accountable if anything
went wrong. last week i could not make/receive calls and text messages, but data is working and i get reception (apparently i'm told that if its blacklisted then it would say on signal/service).
I rang my carrier they said it was blacklisted, told me to get in touch with the original purchaser, i told the person i purchased it from, her said he got it from another friend that got it from someone from a website! so he can't find the original purchaser. I spoke with Apple they said it was blacklisted by Vodafone UK and i need the original purchaser.
The person i purchased if from is talking to Vodafone and is sorting it out and it should be working tomorrow he claims. But this can happed again? So IF this gets sorted, i'm going to tell the person that if this happens again then i want a full refund, right?

Unfortunately, you cannot do very much with your phone unless you get assistance from the previous owner, they should either provide you with the password to unlock it or remove their account from the phone entirely remotely through iCloud.com > Find My Phone.

I purchased my iPhone on eBay from someone selling theirs a week ago. Today I received a message from them, asking that I turn off "Find my iPhone" for an hour so he can switch his iTunes account. Has anyone heard of this before?
I suggested that he log into his iTunes account to remove it from his account, but his reply was that Apple support told him to do this.
Is there any possible harm that can come from me turning this setting off for an hour?

DON'T DO IT. Assuming that the phone is not still locked to his account, there is no possible reason that you would have to log out of your Apple ID for him to do anything for his.

If this phone you bought was already running iOS 7 and had the new activation lock enabled, you can't do anything.
That's the whole point of the feature. If it could be bypassed it would be a pointless feature.
If you can't get the previous owner to unlock it, you've wasted your money.

Sign out and sign in with your ID. You will not be able to update the apps bought by the previous owner, they are not yours.

If you don't turn off Find my iPhone, the previous owner could wipe your phone or lock it any time he wants to. You also won't be able to use your own iCloud account and potentially, if you don't change the iCloud ID, the previous owner could access your personal data when you start storing stuff on the phone.
You won't be able to update and re-activate the phone without removing the previous owners icloud account. This is a security feature to stop stolen phones being used. You really need to get in touch with the previous owner, otherwise this phone will never truly be yours and you could be locked out if it forever if the previous owner chooses.

You must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. This issue is blocking my access to iTunes and any other file from my home computer. It keeps on telling me that I have to autorise my computer to pass on files, yet, it seems, for all this to happen, I need to get logged in through the phone's Apple ID. This of course is different to my one on my computer - and I have no password for it.
This phone is not stolen!! I payed still a fair bit for it. Am still in contact with the previous owner. He doesn't know how to fix the problem either.
Would appreciate any suggestion ????

Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.
