Bought macbook pro in autumn 2011 - should i have imovie already on my mac?

When I bought my mac last year the geek squad guys reformatted my mac with lion etc.
But i do not have imovie, iphoto?
What do i do to rectify this?

So your Mac originally had Snow Leopard on it? If so, did they give you the original install disks? They would include iLife apps.
The Lion license is not transferable unless it was preinstalled on a Mac, so it would depend on how the store got Lion and that, in turn, may affect your ability to download the apps for free - you may wind up having to pay for it.

Is this library one that you've been using since you bought the MBP?  If so and you're running iPhoto 9 then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • JUST Bought  MacBook Pro 17-inch 2.16 Intel Core Duo and NEW to MAC's.

Like the title says I just bought a MacBook Pro and I have NEVER used Mac's in my entire life. I have always been using Windows ever since I was born. But I am heading to college and wanted a change. I was wondering if there is any quick tips or things to know about my MacBook Pro before I get it in the mail? Especially because I've been a Windows person my whole life. Also, I feel like I should have bought the Mac right before I leave for college but that's the end of August and I needed to buy this before I headed to college to test it out. I just don't want to get it and then a newer MacBook comes out. I know that no one knows for sure but do you think that will happen?

Welcome. It will be easier to answer if you say something about what you're interested in and how you might want to use the computer. There are things I do with every new Mac, but they probably wouldn't interest most people. (E.g. I go into the preferences/keyboard/modifiers and turn caps lock into control. I'm an old-time Unix guy who spends a lot of time at the command line.)
Some specific advice on taking a machine to college. This advice all applies to Macs and PCs
    * make sure you have a scheme for backing up your data. I recommend using a Firewire disk. There are lots of ways to do the backup. You'll see plenty of discussions in these groups. If you don't want to buy a Firewire disk you can use other media, but generally those aren't big enough or fast enough to let you do a full backup of your machine. You'll need to locate the folders where you save files and backup just those. WIth the Mac you can do bootable backups. If you lose your disk you can actually boot off the Firewire disk and run that way until you get your disk fixed. Note that this works with Firewire but not USB. Despite the advertising, you really want to use Firewire for external disks, not USB 2.
    * if you haven't done so already, get Applecare. Portables are much more likely to need repair. If you don't have Applecare the repairs can be quite expensive. Apple has pretty good service.
    * make sure you bring all your distribution CDs and DVDs with you. If things go very wrong you may have to reinstall, and you'll need the media with you. (Actually this advice applies more to PCs, where you have to reinstall to recover from a variety of problems. That's less common on Macs, and if you do have to there's a neat procedure -- archive and install -- to preserve your data during a reinstall.)
    * make sure you have enough memory. With your machine I recommend at least 1 GB. the default of 512 MB tends to lead to a sluggish machine.
    * make sure you understand the security features of OS X. Turn on the firewall. Be careful about opening attachments and browsing to questionable sites. University networks tend to see a lot more security problems than a typical home environment, though home broadband connections are pretty dangerous these days as well.
    * check out your school's acceptable use policy and network access policies.
    * depending upon your discipline I might recommend installing either Boot Camp or Parallels and then installing either Windows or Linux as a secondary OS. Anyone who is serious about learning computer technology should run Linux (thought not necessarily as the primary OS).
There will always be newer models. A 2.16 GHz Core Duo should be fine for several years. Not necessarily all 4 years though. That's pushing it, particularly with a portable.

  • How to install CS5 on macbook pro retina display?? I have the original CD but mac doesn't have cd

I can't find the PS CS5 to install the trial anyways... so i need a solution

You will need a computer to "burn" the CD image onto a USB/thumb drive. I say burn, not copy, because you cannot simply copy the disk image. There are multiple Free OpenSource programs that can copy a disk image onto a thumb drive, so I will not suggest one. Burning an image, rather than copying will delete files on a thumb drive just as it would with a rewritable disk.
If it is an IMG and not an ISO image, I believe you may be able to copy it directly to a thumb drive and mount the image to install the program. You may also mount an ISO that has been copied if you have the correct program, but I would not advise it.
All of this should permitted within the license areement for the most restrictively licensed programs, so long as no copy is left on the computer used to copy the image, you keep the CD only as a backup, you are only using the copy to install a program for which you have a license, and you only install the program on one computer that you own and control.
I am not an attorney and do not work for Adobe, so you should read the license before following my advice to be sure.

  • Macbook Pro 13" (Late 2011) Bottom Plate Bulging

    Hello there,
I own a Macbook Pro 13" (Late 2011). I have had it for sometime now.
I noticed that the bottom plate (the piece of aluminum that can be removed) is slightly loose in the front. There is a slight retreat when I press down on it. This is not happening to my newer Late 2013 15" Macbook Pro.
I heard that this can be caused by a swelling battery?! My battery has around 350 cycles on it.
Should I be concerned? Is it necessary to take it to an Apple Store and have them take a look at it??
Thanks for your answers in advance.

That could be the case. It wouldn't hurt to have them evaluate it at an Apple Store as the appointment is free.

  • I bought a MacBook Pro in September 2011 and it has never worked well.

I bought a MacBook Pro in September, 2011 and it has never worked well.  Are there known issues with this machine?  It just stops responding, usually for 3 minutes (especially when I'm working in iPhoto or Contacts).  I regret buying this machine.  I wish I could just go back to my previous MacBook Pro.  Any chance Apple will just exchange this for me without it costing me my other arm & leg?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

This is one instance where you'll curse yourself for not having bought the AppleCare Warranty extension and gotten the board for free.
Anyway, get your model number handy and go look up the parts in www.powerbookmedic.com or www.ifixit.com amongst other places. They've also have videos or photo pictorials on how to do the replacement. Not altogether trivial, be sure to spread the adequate amount of thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, else you'll fry the new board in short order again.

Are you talking about changing the keyboard layout when you are working in Windows?  If so, you need to tell people how you are running it (bootcamp, parallels, other) and whether you have already done stuff like

  • Right, MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(Built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G not working, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III.

Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.
