Bought new imac today, came with a Leopard update disc?

Just picked up a new imac from a local Best Buy store and it had the Leopard upgrade disc in it instead. I turned the imac on and went through the Tiger install until the desktop showed up. I slipped the Leopard upgrade dvd right away and rebooted. The disk went through the long verifying process before install happened but I walked away when it was around 92%. When I got back a few minutes later, the imac was off.
I had to turn it on again and it booted off the Leopard dvd that was still in it. This time I skipped the dvd disc verify and went straight to the install. It started at 1 hour & 20 minutes left, but now it's at 48 minutes.
I was just wondering if I'm going to have any problems because I skipped that verify process the second time. Did anyone else have issues upgrading their new imac with their upgrade disc? Maybe I'm paranoid but I thought it was odd that the imac shut down in the middle of the verify process.

I agree it should not have shut down in the middle of the upgrade. Some people have experienced problems with doing the standard Leopard upgrade. I would recommend doing an Archive install of the system. The disk verification at the beginning of the install process is just to verify that it can read all the contents of the disk before it starts installing. If the disk is scratched badly the install process could fail half way through but since this is a new disk it should fine but you never know. Personally once I verify a disk and know it's good I usually skip the verification there after unless I have reason to believe the disk may have gotten damaged.

  • Apple OS 10.5.8 on new macs that came with Snow Leopard!

I want all who read this to know that I am and have been using OS 10.5.8 on my Imac 21.5" core 2 duo that came with 10.6 Snow Leopard. Everyone at Apple said it could not work but that is wrong. I am running OS 10.5.8 in a Bootcamp partitian with great success. I do have the original OS 10.64 as the main OS but usually run os the Boocamp partitian so I can run Logic Studio 8. This OS will not recognize the internal Airport and lacks some features that I did not have before anyway. I connect DSL through Ethernet hardwire, which is faster anyway.

I will probably try installing it on a back-up drive firts. That is one of the recommended steps to get freehand to work with snow anyways. The goods news is we have Macbook pro we purchased in march and a imac G5 that I sent the logic board out to get repaired. I really need to get the G5 running because that is where a lot of the data is we need. Mailboxes, address books etc.
Have you tried using the G5 as a target disk via firewire?
Why do upgrades always have to be so painful and exciting at the same time.
I dunno, it is part of the fun though. It is especially painful right now where the OS is evolving and older software and peripherals are being transitioned out.

Based in HK--a very intl city.  Travel constantly thoughout Asia and N Amer for biz.  Bought MA, at new HK Apple store, that came with lg HK- 3-prong plug on thick extension cord that's useless.  Asked store for a US 2-prong cord as much easier and universal to travel with and easy to use adopters. Not available thru Apple in HK; avail in US for addl US$79+tax if I am there t pick it up or with shipping (!!) we are talking a $100 addl cord expense on top of the $1,700 cost of the MA.  Apple: get to understand the needs of your customers: they are increasingly global.  (BTW: an adapter kit that needs to be used 100% of time is NOT the answer as it just creates a Mickey-Mouse solution.)

  • I have a late-2008 macbook that is running 10.5.8. I also have a newer macbook that came with snow leopard. Can I use the install disk that came with the newer macbook to update my older macbook?

Also, when upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard, will I lose all the data that is currently on my hard drive?

No, that SL disk is meant for the computer it came with only.
Upgrading to SL generally will not cause data loss, but you should have a backup of your important files in any case.
You can get a Snow Leopard disk by calling Apple - in the USA it's 800-MY-APPLE.
    Best of luck.

Thanks. It's hot today. Going up to 22ºC today, 24ºC tomorrow, and 26ºC the day after. Almost like summer.
    Have a good one, too.

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • Will Apple discount Leopard if I buy a new iMac today??

I think with the delay of Leopard, Apple should offer some incentive for people to get off the fence that want to buy an iMac. We know that the release date for Leopard will be sometime in October. So, why would I buy an iMac today, then spend the $125-$200 price to upgrade?
Anybody have any idea how this will work? Apple store telling me I'd have to pay full price, which I think is BS.

I'm in the same boat as you, just ready to buy a new iMac but pondering waiting for Leopard. In one of these forums somewhere, though, earlier this week I read a post that made a lot of sense to me. I really don't want to have Leopard ".0" version. Historically, the first major releases have had quite a few glitches and gotchas, and who knows how third-party software compatibility will be at first.
I think I'd be much happier running the now very mature 10.4.10 for a while and let braver souls work with the initial Leopard releases. So my plan is now to go ahead and buy a 24" iMac, perhaps as early as today. And then, when I need to, I'll upgrade to Leopard once it's mature. I just want to use the apps, not experiment with them.
    Good luck with your decision.

Problems setting up my TC. Have just bought new iMac(OS 10.6.8) and  TC. I tried to set it up. iMac cannot find it. I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

Bought new iMac & moved (or thought I had) all of my music from the old PC to the new iMac. Have discovered several hundred songs are orphaned on old PC; I can "see" them with both machines turned on & iTunes open. "Missing" songs show in iMac itunes Shared folder. How do I move them all so I can then & retire the old PC?

From things you are saying, such as "shared folder" and having both machines on, it doesn't sound to me like you truly moved the whole iTunes collection.

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

You will need Snow Leopard to install Lion unless you buy it on the USB drive from the Apple Store. You may wish to think about buying a Snow Leopard disc in case you wish, like some others, to return to Snow Leopard if Lion is not suitable for you. I personally saw the advantage of paying for SL and downloading Lion which was about the same cost as just buying the Lion USB installer.

  • Bought new iMac, how do I get Lion on a second computer

So a week ago I bought a new iMac which came installed with Lion. Now I'd like to put it on my aluminum MacBook. Can I do that without buying Lion? When I sign into my account at the App store on the iMac, Lion is noted to be Installed, but if I sign in on the MacBook $29.99 shows up.

The Lion installation that came preinstalled with your new computer is tied to your new computer. You do not get to download the Lion installer and install it free on other computers with that license. You'll need to pay the thirty bucks.

  • My mbp came with Snow Leopard, I upgraded to Lion, but its not in my purchases now.

I have an early 2011 MBP, it came with Snow Leopard preinstalled. I later upgraded to Lion when it was released. I did a clean wipe on the hard drive and a fresh reinstall of Snow Leopard with the intention of re loading Lion also. It's not showing in my purchases now though, its as if I never bought it. I also upgraded my iMac when Lion came out and am running Lion on it also, but it's not even showing up in purchases on it either. I am logged in to my iTunes account on both.
I figured it out. I went into my account information and under purchases it said I had 1 hidden purchase. Lion was the hidden purchase. No idea why it was like that. It's downloading now though.

Contact the Mac App Store support to get Lion if you need it for compatibility purposes.

As others have noted, this is a classic kernel panic (KP) and should happen with a new machine. AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

    PLease advise.
    Thanks

Well, I don't intend to be using it "less" strictly in the sense of time spent - I'll probably still keep it in my lap all the time surfing the web in front of the TV... but yeah, no intensive graphics or music use, just web surfing and the occasional spreadsheet or word document. So long as I won't have networking and file sharing issues then it probably doesn't make sense to upgrade.
