Bought new SSD, need to change Windows boot drive

I just bought a new H415. The operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium) is on the current 500gb hard drive, and I want to switch it to my new 128GB SSD drive on the same computer. I've tried about everything, including cloning, system restore, etc, but can't get it to work. It shouldn't be that difficult, but it is. I'm out of options. Any help?

Did you burn a recovery disc set? Use that to install to the SSD. You do not want to clone the drive to the SSD because the alignment will be off which will cause a major performance hit.

  • New ssd install with fresh windows 7 os

    Hi ,
I have recently inquired about using the oh recovery USB for a new ssd in my hp envy 15t, but I now know the recovery discs cannot be used as the ssd is to small.
So my question is can I borrow a friends windows 7 cd and install that in my ssd and use my serial code? If so what and how should I prepare to reload all the drivers that are needed ?
Thank you once again I really appreciate the help!
    This question was solved.

    You're very welcome.
That shouldn't be a problem then.  All the W7 x64 drivers are at the link below...
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=6521...
Now, if your model comes with the Intel and nVidia graphics, then when you go to install the graphics drivers, you have to install the Intel graphics driver first, and reboot.  Then you can install the nvidia graphics driver.
Recommended order of install for the important drivers...
    1. Intel chipset installation utility.  Install and reboot.
    2. Intel and nvidia graphics drivers. Install Intel first, reboot, install nvidia and reboot.
    3. Audio. Install and reboot.
    4. Ethernet. Install and reboot.
Then you can install any of the others you need.
If you need help finding any drivers, please post back and I will be happy to assist you further.
You may not know what model wireless card your notebook has and now that you don't have a windows installation to check the model wireless card you have in the device manager, after you install W7, please do the following...
Go to the device manager, find the Other Devices category, and click on the Network Controller needing drivers.
Then click on the Details tab at the top of the network controller window.
Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description.
Drop down on that and select the second item on the list (Hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters that begin with PCI\VEN.

  • Need to change Windows Live account

    Hi all,
The Windows Live account I entered at startup has been blocked after Hotmail told me I was entering the wrong password (turns out I was actually right all along!)
There's now an ongoing 'temporary problem' with resetting the account, so I need to change to a different WL account. I saw somewhere this can't be done.. surely this makes no sense? Can it be effected by doing a complete reset of the phone (Lumia 800) if it comes to that?
Because I don't seem to be able to access that account, I'm without email, updates and apps so far and counting!
    AAAArgh!

Yes, I have set up another account with Live, but the phone keeps demanding me to sign in with the Hotmail account (no option to sign in with a different a/c) and I can't find a way of making @live.co.uk the default.

  • Configure SSD as window boot drive

    Hello HP support Forum.
I have a Pavillion p7 - 1240 desktop. I installed 120gb SSD drive. Window 7 recogizes SSD drive as regular active drive, but not as a boot drive. I want to configure 120 GB SSD as boot drive and 1.0 terabyte HDD as storage. How do I go configure Window 7.0 Home Edition  to boot from SSD ?
    Please Help?
    thank you

Hello  Lasvegaswireman and thank you for responding and helping with installation of 120 Gb bytes SSd.
I did a clean installation of bare bone Window 7 Home edition - on SSD drive. window was able to boot up successfully without any error messages.
However, window 7 does not recongnize or detect  external  1 terabyte backup usb drive when I plugged it to USB port ; backup drive has power as indicated by LED on.  I were unable to restore backup file from external USB drive because - USB controllers, network adapter and all  crtical configurations of the orginal HP factory settings were not loaded; as the result, I were not able to use usb port restore computer setting from backup. it's a bare bone Window 7.0 Home edition 64 bit.  No internet connection detected.
I pondered the mirror image backup of my internal hard drive, but the size of mirror image is 190 gigabyte, which is  larger the capacity of the 120 gbyte SSD.
how do I work around or resolve this problem? I had not format the orginal  internal 1 terabyte hard drive yet for fear I might loose settings should I fail to restore files and data from external usb hard drive.
I used Microsoft provided backup that comes with Window 7.  How do I load and restore all drivers and settings from USB drive onto SSD  drive , and use 1 terabyte HDD as data storage.
I have not formated  internal 1terabyte hdd yet for fear of loosing all settings and configurations should I fail to restore data from external backup.
Would you show me how to resolve or work around these issue?  I want to get larger capacity SSD to accomodate  mirror image but it is costly for budget.
I thank you for your help, and I am eager to get resolution.
    Cordially Yours.

  • 250 GB SSD, and GetInfo on the boot drive shows 267 GB available.

    Puzzlement:
I'm running OSX 10.9.3, and have a 250 GB SSD "hard drive". When I run GetInfo on the boot drive, it shows 267 GB available. How come?
    LeonfromWA

The S.M.A.R.T. status looks ok so it's probably not a issue with a failing disc.
My guess would be that this is due to corrupted filesystem metadata i.e. some of the filesystem data that tracks: size, names and locations of files (and folders) has become incorrect.
This needs to be fixed or it may result in the loss of files or odd bugs - I've personally seen this result in warnings about full disc (when plenty of space was available) and failures to boot.
To fix / determine if it is a filesystem issue:
Select "First Aid" in Disk Utility, use the Verify Disk button to check if there are any issues.
Use Repair Disk to fix detected issues. This may require you to boot form another disc to be able to do the repair.
There are 3rd party tools that may be able to fix issues that Disk Utility can't handle, but I have no experience with these so I can't recommend anything.
The final solution would be to reformat the disc and reinstall / restore from a backup - so remember to backup your data to another disc if you haven't previously done so.

  • Overly Excited New User Needs Advice on Windows for Mac

As of Christmas day, I am a proud owner of a new MBP 17" beautiful piece of machinery! I'm coming from a PC so you can imagine my excitement when I opened this gift from my parents. Also, I'm 33 years old so getting a gift this amazing from your parents is pretty huge!
Anyway, the point is I have to use a program for work that is only available for Windows and I just need some advice on whether to use Parallels or VM or just use the free boot camp. I don't want to use Windows for anything other than this program. Is there a way around having to buy the whole Windows OS? Also, is iWork any better than Office? Not sure which of those to buy either. I hate that I even have to have Windows on my new Mac! Thanks for any advice.

Hi eightezsteps, welcome to Apple Discussions!
What program do you need? Often PC programs have equivalents on the Mac platform, or even Mac versions that many people are not aware of. There are very few file formats that Macs cannot deal with.
The choice of Parallels, VMWare, or Boot Camp will also depend on whether you require 3D graphics support with that application. So, we'll need to know what it is!
is iWork any better than Office?
I prefer it to Office now after using it for a year. However, it is different, and there is a slight learning curve to it. Once you discover the differences from Office, you'll be as productive if not moreso. You should be aware that some of the more advanced features of Office are sometimes not included in iWork though. So if you require advanced formulas and macros in Excel (for example) to be cross-platform compatible then you'll need Office. If your work is slightly less hardcore than that, you'll be just fine with iWork once you get used to it.
I do some pretty extensive academic writing (scientific) using Pages and Numbers and I have never ran into anything it could not do for me. That includes formulae and scientific notation.

My HDD is partitioned c for OS and d for program files.  I'm trying to update my ipod touch to the new ios but when it begins to back up my ipod, it attempts to put the back up on my c drive and then says not enough space.  my itunes is stored on my d drive.  how can i get itunes to save the backup to my d drive instead of c?

I forgot to add that I'm in Afghanistan and have no way of calling for support or going to a friends house to get help.

  • I need to change the hard drive, some help please ?

My sister's G3 iBook hard drive seems to have died. She want me to replace it for her. My question, where can I get a replacement ? I know drives come in different capacities, 10, 20, 250Gigs's etc. But are all notebook drives the same physical size ? So can I buy any make to fit in the iBook, or do I have to get one from Apple ? I'm not 'IT', but work in medical physics, so getting my hands 'dirty' is not the problem.

Well, John, I have all sorts of links for places to buy hard drives here in the U.S., but I'm not sure they would be of any help to you. You need a "Super Slim" (9.5 mm high) 2.5 inch notebook drive. You don't have to buy it from Apple. You will need to format it with the original system CD's.
Here are a couple links, so you can print out the lists and shop locally:

  • T410 will not boot with new SSD

I've cloned my HDD to a new SSD, but it will not boot.  It goes into a Lenovo Think Bios splash screen / Black screen loop.  I booted off a repair disk and performed a repair, but it is still doing the bios loop thing.  This has happened with both an OCZ and a Kingston SSD.  Any ideas? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm going to venture a guess that the drive was not cloned properly.
The "new" drive must be in the machine's HDD bay, and the "old" one in the USB enclosure.
I always use Clonezilla for the rare occasions that I actually clone something, but Acronis should do just fine as well.
    Good luck.

  • Clean installation on new ssd, win7 now on sdb1

    Hello
This might be more a win7 related post, or maybe grub, not sure:
I used to have dual boot Arch/Win7, with the following fstab:
    /dev/sda1 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda3 /home ext4 defaults 0 1
Recently I bought an ssd, and made a new clean install(installed os-prober, updated grub.cfg with grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg), with the resulting fstab
    /dev/sda1 / ext4 rw,relatime,noatime,nodiratime,discard,data=ordered 0 1 #new ssd
    /dev/sdb1 /media/windows ntfs-3g defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb2 /media/oldroot ext4 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb3 /media/oldhome ext4 defaults 0 1
"oldroot" (previous arch installation) boots ok (I changed the /media/oldroot/etc/fstab to the new sd# order)
windows (Win7) tries to boot (windows logo appears on screen), but after a few seconds the machine reboots.
Does anyone know how to make my old windows partition bootable (maybe I have to edit some windows files?)
    Thanks!

    Thanks @DSpider
I removed some flags, but left noatime and discard.
    From the archwiki
    Mount Flags
There are several key mount flags to use in one's /etc/fstab entries for SSD partitions.
noatime- Reading accesses to the file system will no longer result in an update to the atime information associated with the file. The importance of the noatime setting is that it eliminates the need by the system to make writes to the file system for files which are simply being read. Since writes can be somewhat expensive as mentioned in previous section, this can result in measurable performance gains. Note that the write time information to a file will continue to be updated anytime the file is written to with this option enabled.
discard - The discard flag will enable the benefits of the TRIM command as long as one is using kernel version >=2.6.33. It does not work with ext3; using the discard flag for an ext3 root partition will result in it being mounted read-only.
About my win7 non-booting thing, I'll try later this week to rearrange my drives.
    Thanks everyone for the tips

  • Changing Boot Drives and Keep Your Time Machine History

A problem with Time Machine is that it is specific to the target and backup drives.  Change one or the other and TM will want to do a new full backup. If you don't have enough space, it will delete your old backups. HOWEVER, this is a way to install a new boot (or other) drive that TM is backing up and get it to pick up where it left off doing incremental backups.  This is extremely helpful if you change your boot drive.  In my case, I moved from a HDD to an SSD but wanted to keep my history intact.  TIme Machine "knows" which drive to backup based on the UUID (unique drive identifier) so merely changing the name of the drive in the Finder won't do it.  You need to change the UUID in the latest backup of TM.
Note: This is not for the faint of heart or technically challenged. It also requires a mild knowledge of unix or at least the ability to follow instructions TO THE LETTER!  You will change the UUID from the Latest Backup in Time Machine from the "old" drive to the "new" drive thus tricking TM into thinking the new drive is the old drive and it will continue to do incremental backups of the new drive.  The technique described below was originally developed under OS 10.5 (and posted on the MAC OS HINTS 10.5 blog but I have just used it under Snow Leopard.  It might work for newer OSs but I haven't tried them.  I actually did 2 things: 1) Installed a larger TM drive and 2) installed a SSD as a boot drive.  I will post under a different title to provide information on installing a larger TM drive since putting that information here may be confusing.
You will need 2 Unix commands: xattr and fsaclctl.  xattr is included in OS 10.6 Unix shell but fsaclctl is not.  You will have to get fsaclctl from a version of OS 10.5 using the techniques described in the article posted below.  I had an old 10.5 disc and found it in: /sbin/fsaclctl at the root directory of my 10.5 hard drive.  I also performed the technicque described below logged in as root but this may merely logged in as an administrotor.
** How to change your boot (or any other) drive and get Time Machine to just pick up where it left off doing incremental backups and not do a full backup of the new drive:
    1) Turn OFF Time Machine
    2) Install the new drive
    3) Clone the old drive to the new drive (in my case HDD -> SSD) using SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner or even Disk Utility
    4) Make sure you have both xattr and fsaclctl commands installed
    5) Open Terminal
    6) Follow the instructions here:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090213071015789&query=time+machine +new+disc
Note: you may need to use the command switch "l" (the letter l) to see the ascii version of the UUID
    sudo xattr -l com.apple.backupd.SnapshotVolumeUUID my_partition
Note: Unix uses spaces (white space) as delimiters and is always case sensitive so if you have spaces in the name of your drives, you MUST put the drive name in quotation marks:
if the drive name is: My HDD then to list the contents of the drive in Unix would use the command ls thus:
    > ls "My HDD"
will list the contents of My HDD
(the command:  > ls My HDD (without quotation marks) will produce an error - no such file or directory)
When you've followed the above procedure and turned Time Machine back on, the first time TM may warn you that the disc has been changed and "someone may be trying to trick your computer" into using the new drive.  Answer: do the backup
I wish I could take credit for this brilliant technique but I just followed it and it worked for me. I also read the entire thread before starting.

The two drives are handled as separate drives, even if they have the same name.
In essence, the old backups are from a drive that's no longer connected; see #E3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • OSX wont install on new SSD

    Hey folks
Ive been scouring around trying to find answers but to no avail so im coming here...
Ive got a '09 15" MBP that i've decided to change the hard drive in. It came with a 256GB mechanical drive and ive bought a 256GB OCZ Vertex SSD to put in its place. I have been able to format the drive ok (GUID/1 Partition/ Mac OSX Extended (Journaled)) but every time i try to install the OS it comes up with a message saying it can't install on this computer because it cant install necessary support files.
Im using the grey machine-specific discs that came with the laptop to install the OS with (we're talking Snow Leopard here). Im all out of luck now as i can't think of any reason why it is not working. I've also tried clearing the PRAM beforehand and that hasn't worked either, so if anyone out there has any ideas please send them my way!
    Cheers

Search online for a step by step guide how to install Snow Leopard on a SSD, or if there are issues with your SSD version.
Snow Leopard came out before SSD's, you might need special drivers that might be on the 10.6.3 retail disks sold online at Apple (works for your machine) and not on your machine specific disks that's only for hard drives.
Also once you get OS X installed you have to enable TRIM.
    http://www.mactrast.com/2011/07/how-to-enable-trim-support-for-all-ssds-in-os-x- lion/
Also you can use a bootable clone or your old drive in a bootable enclosue to clone your older OS X version to the internal SSD.
External OS X boot drives are bootable by holding the option key down on a wired keyboard at boot time (Startup Manager)

  • Find/Change window freezes - Appleworks 6.2.9

When I use the Appleworks Find/Change window for the first time after booting up my new iMac, the Find/Change window freezes up and then disappears and then the opened document on my desktop disappears from my desktop, too. I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and a new iMac purchased a few months ago. Why does the Find/Change window freeze up and do that? How do I fix this? Thanks for any help!

The most likely cause is corrupt preferences & is easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

  • Can I install a new SSD on my MBP without the old hard drive?

Here's the scenario. I'm currently in the Philippines leaving for California for college next week. There, I will buy a new SSD (Samsung 830 to be specific). I want to leave my current HDD (the one in my laptop that I'm using right now) here in the Philippines though as my brother here wants to use it. Is there a way for me to install the new SSD without having my old hard drive with me? My macbook pro is an early 2011 15inch MBP running on Mac OS X version 10.7.3 (Lion). I actually don't want to clone my hard drive or anything because I want to start fresh and new with my new SSD. Most of the tutorials I've read online involve some kind of cloning or having the old hard drive still plugged in and having the SSD connected externally, but these methods won't work for me because I won't have the old hard drive. Thanks so much

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.
