Bought used iMac, reinstalled snow leopard, stuck at start up screen

I bought a used iMac from someone who has owned it for about a year. He had upgraded to Lion from snow leopard but I wanted to reformat everything back to the original settings(like new) so I could start from scratch. I used the original snow leopard start up discs that came with the machine and held down c when restarting, the installation went fine but when the computer restarted after the installation the apple in the grey screen appeared and the spinning circle at the bottom spun for a few seconds then froze. I let it sit over night thinking it was just taking a while to start up but in the morning it was still on the same screen, nothing had changed. Any idea what the problem is?

You have to use Disk Utility to erase the ENTIRE boot drive by selecting the drive makers name on the far left, it will have the disk size too.
You need to do this to erase the 10.7 Recovery and reset the partition map back to 10.6 acceptable version so your 10.6 Disk Utility can repair the drive (and get the machine to boot) and remove the 10.7 EFI partition for 10.6 version.
I suggest you also use the Security Option > Zero all data, not for scrubbing the drive, but also for mapping off any failing sectors.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Once 10.6 is installed, setup and Software update until clear.
then install programs, then files and only to 50% of the hard drive if possible for best performance.
don't go over 80% as it can start having issues as it gets near full.
Good Luck, setup a clone and then you can boot from the external clone drive anytime and in seconds.

  • If I reinstall snow leopard using official disk will I lose my files on iMac(photos in iPhoto)?

My iMac with snow leopard has recently started working very slowly- I don't know what to do! After turning it on it works normally for about a minute and then it starts. Even if I don't enter the system and stay at the screen with list of users it happens- so please give a piece of advice how to fix it or otherwise I will have to reinstall OS, but I can't lose my photos!!

You may have diagnosed the problem, by the way
Snow Leopard will reinstall and automatically preserve User data, such as your photos. But maybe before you do that, if you don't already have a backup, first buy an external hard drive and if it does start successfully or reinstall successfully, move your valuable photos to the external drive, in case the internal Hard drive fails.
Once you have your valuable data copies to another location, you won;t have lost anything that cannot be replaced.

  • I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac (Spring '08)...

I am trying to reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac (Spring '08) and part way through the install my screen shuts off and does nothing but my computer is still running. I've turned it off, unplugged it and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I turn it back up and hold down "c" to boot from disk and the install screen pops back up. I do a disk check and it passes so I try to install again, which it says it can restore the last install's process and then begins installing again. After about 10-15 minutes my screen shuts off and goes to sleep, my mouse and keyboard will not wake it up. All I have plugged in is the mighty mouse and keyboard. This is getting frustrating...

    Reset the SMC
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • Can I use a German Snow Leopard upgrade for my US iMac running Leopard?

I just read that for certain Intel based iMac's it is still possible to upgrade to Maverick. I'd need to upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, first, to start the process. The issue is that I'm in Germany. The German Apple site sells the Snow Leopard upgrade, but I don't know if I can use it to upgrade my US iMac (early 2008/Intel based/ running 10.5.8)? Does anybody know if there is a difference between the German and the US version?

No difference what so ever other than the printing on the media.

I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie.  Any suggestions to fix?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long.  After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix.  I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

  • I want to upgrade iMac to Snow Leopard, can I use the (DVD-Mac OS X 10.6.3) that I got with the 15" MacBook Pro that totally died, and upgrade iMac from that DVD

I want to upgrade my iMac to Snow Leopard, can I use the (DVD-Mac OS X 10.6.3) that I got with my purchase of the 15" MacBook Pro that totally died, and upgrade the iMac from that DVD that came with the laptop ?   Thanks

No, that 10.6.3 DVD is system specific to the MacBook Pro.
You need a Snow Leopard Upgrade > Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)
or if a MobileMe users > Apple throws MobileMe users a free version of Snow Leopard

If you own any verson of iPhoto '11 then there is a free update to version 9.5.x in the App store
If you own a previous version of iPhto (iPhoto '09 or earlier) then as always an upgrade to a new version (in this case iPhoto '11) is a paid upgrade and you purchase it in the App store
and no OS update/upgrade contains a version of iPhto - it is a seperate program and although it is included as part of every new Mac it is not a free program and never has been sinve version 1 or 2 (I forget when it changes)

What kind of CD are you burning (Audio or MP3)?
If you're burning an MP3 CD, the songs must already
    be in mp3 format.
If not, iTunes will tell you that you have no songs
    in the playlist.

I was making an audio cd. But I have since found out what the problem was. The files in my PLAYLIST I converted to aiff, since they were SDll files (I thought they were similar to AIFF, and they PLAY on Itunes...just won't burn.) When I selected the songs in the playlist and converted them...I thought all those files were converted, They were not. The converted files went into my LIBRARY, even tho I selected the ones in the playlist...and once I exchanged the SDll versions of the songs in my playlist. THEN they burned fine...but still...it's confusing..you say convert..it says it's been converted..and what they don't say is it's not been converted inside the playlist...where I had selected the songs...It just ADDED aiff versions..but only in the library...Anyway, that's what happened. But it's strange that it PLAYS SDll but won't burn them....and you'd think, logically..the ones you selected would change...but they don't. Playlists are mainly pointers to the actual files I guess...a sort of Alias..
At least it works now. But it's sad that the latest itunes does more, but also does LESS...as I used to be able to burn SDll files. Now I'll have to convert all my files to AIFF, and mp3's as I assume my ipod video won't play anything but mp3's?

  • When attempting to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I receive the message "This disk is used for Time Machine Backups" when I try to select the lone available hard drive.

When attempting to upgrade my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks, I receive the message "This disk is used for Time Machine Backups" when I try to select the lone available hard drive.  I have ensured that Time Machine is turned off.  Upon some Google research, some who reported this problem were told to delete the folder backup.backupdb, but I do not have this folder on my Mac.  Any suggestions?

The folder would be at the root of your hard drive. Double-click Macintosh HD and look there.
If it isn’t there, I’m not sure what it is seeing.

Thanks X!  I use Office 2011 as this iMac is only a year old.  I don't have Rosetta (is it an add-on?) at least, I've never seen it... so... you're saying I could upgrade to Lion with no ill effect to my FCP7 Studio and all it's files and my saved projects?

  • Can I use icloud on imac with snow leopard OS10.6.8

Err Can I use icloud with iMac OS snow leopard 10.6.8 ?

This page explains what you can do on Snow Leopard with an existing iCloud account.
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudSL.html
You cannot create an iCloud account on Snow Leopard.
In addition to SoHo Organizer, Fruux syncs Calendars, Tasks and Contacts between a wide variety of devices (not using the iCloud server) including Snow Leopard and above, Windows Outlook and Thunderbird, Linux Thunderbird, and iOS and Android devices - see their compatibility chart(click the blue 'i' for a caveat about Snow Leopard). It's free for one user, two shares, two devices; above that pricing starts at $20 per month. I haven't tried this.
