Bought used N86 from eBay - any possibility of inf...

Hello all...
I wanted to get an N86, but didn't want to spend the vast amount it costs for what's left of the new ones available in the US.
So I bought a used one on eBay.  The guy I bought it from seemed to have a good rep, and the phone arrived in good shape.
However, I wonder what the likelihood is that folks get phones where the firmware has been modded to include spyware/malware/viruses/etc.
Has anyone had any experience with such things, or heard of them?
Right now I'm using the Nokia Software Updater to update the N86 to the latest firmware.  Hopefully that'll stop anything bad potentially happening (unless hackers are able to hide nasty stuff on the SIM, which is required by Nokia Software Updater to be installed in order to do the firmware update for some unknown and strange reason).

Viruses don't exist but small amounts of malware do but they are very rare and usually it's obvious when they run. You would never encounter one under normal web browsing or installing apps from trusted sources such as the ovi store.
Even if the phone had been hacked the chances of it containing something nasty are almost non-existent.
What you should do is wipe the phone before you start using it. Dial, like a phone number *#7370# and this will reset the phone back to how it was from new. All data that you have added will be lost.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

I bought an iPhone from Ebay and it did not turn on so I looked on WinSCP and it said there was NO files PLEASE can someone send me iPhone 4 files!

No, no one can do that. You need to try restoring it:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

hello my frend, i dont know what i have to do. I bought iphone 4 from ebay and it is locked can you help my to unlock ?
    <Edited By Host>

Only the wireless carrier to which the iPhone is locked can unlock
it. Contact them to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Apple does not unlock iPhones - wireless carrier has this responsibility.

  • Are lightning cables from eBay any good?

Hey folks, I am currently using an iPhone 5 and I am looking to purchase two more lightning cables for it - one for my car and the other for my office at work.
Are lightining cables from eBay good enough? They're running for $3-4 a pop so it would save me some money. Anyone have any experience with these cables from eBay?
I am well aware of the fact that iOS 7 will display an annoying popup everytime I connect this "non-apple certified" lightining cable but I think I can live with that.
    Thanks in advance!

Geez, relax man I get what you're saying but I can't justify spending $50+ for two charging cables. Charging cables......I mean common. Plus, I don't understand the need for those "identification chips" in these lightning cables. Seems like a waste of money to me and we the consumers needlessly end up paying more for something we probably don't even need. I mean, I don't see these identification chips in micro-usb charging cables, nor did Apple have them in their old 30-pin cables. Apple can be really controlling sometimes lol.
If you're going to say if you don't like thier policies maybe you shouldn't by an Apple product, save it.

  • Used Macbook from ebay

I recently bought an used Macbook (not Pro) for $220 from ebay. Its a 2007 model, the seller installed some latest Softwares and upgraded Memory, Harddisk, superdrive. I've had no issues with the machine so far. Cosmetic wise as well its excellent with no cracks, smudges or chips anywhere. Battery as expected from an used laptop, stand for max 2 hrs without being plugged in - no complaints there. I already have a Macbook Pro that I purchased directly from Apple stpre and I knw it gets heated a lil bit if I keep it on bed. The same behaviour with this laptop as well.
I was wondering how they can sell a wonderfully working laptop so cheap? Can somone tell me wht could be the catch here?
    Thanks.

It's a steal. I doubt that the seller included its original System Install DVD because approximately 0% of eBay sellers do, and sellers who include everything that should be included command a premium price, sometimes hundreds more. Empty Mac cardboard boxes alone sell from $20 to $40.
You can purchase a replacement disc from Apple. You should do that. Call the phone number in the Apple Online Store. The price is reasonable; $25 or so. Apple will need your MacBook's serial number: MacBook: How to find the serial number. Explain that you need a replacement set of original discs and do not give up until you speak to someone who understands what you require.

  • No emails from eBay any more.

I stopped receiving emails from eBay at about the time I changed from TalkTalk to Sky for my broadband. Could Sky be somehow blocking eBay emails, because I still receive all other emails so only eBay ones are affected. Ebay is listed as a safe website on my preferences.

Yes, It is indeed sad, that the Apple customer service for vintage products is non existence. So we end-users have to help each other, to try and resolve our issues.

  • I  bought used ipad from someone and i dont have eny connection way to hem and i dont have his apple accont , what should i do ? i want help please.

How can i remove apple accont in used ipad?

If the iPad has Activation Lock - that is, it's asking for the previous owner's Apple ID and password to activate the device - then you will need that information, or you'll need to get the previous owner to remove the device from his/her iCloud account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2702
If you can't reach the previous owner or he/she is unwilling to cooperate, then the device is unusable by you. Return the iPad for a refund if you can.
    Regards.

I agree with Dah*Veed, but if you for some reason don't want to do that, you can simply sign out her Apple ID and then sign in with your own.

i was bought a iphone 5  from ebay  its unlocked  but i can not connect to itune because of the missing user id and password. now my problem is i bought htis phone from ebay from USA and i am from india , now how can i get out from this problem of apple  id  not get opne!!
i want to connect this my phone with itune. now tell me what i can do ?

If the iPhone is running iOS 7 and the previous owner did not disable Find My iPhone with their Apple iCloud account settings, you must get in touch with the previous owner. Most sellers restore the iPhone as new so this may have been a stolen iPhone sold on eBay.
If you are unable to get the Apple ID and password from the seller, contact eBay to return the iPhone and get your money back.

  • Has anyone purchased a used lens from lensrentals/lensauthority?

Hello guys. I'm on the market for 85 1.2ii and 70-200 2.8is ii lenses. Both are remarkable and expensive too. I really feel bad I didn't pick up them for $1799 each (after rebate) during last Thanksgiving/Christmas sale. So, I guess I'll go with the used lenses.
So, my question is whether or nor any of you guys ever bought used stuff from lensauthority/lensrentals? What I like about them is their customer support, they test all lenses before selling and also offer a 2-year extended warranty for only $15-20 extra. But my concern is that these lenses, although rated as being in a great shape, definitely saw a lot of use by rental department. Would you get a used lens from a rental company like lensrentals? Or I'd better buy a used one in excellent condition from a private seller (but of course no extended warranty)?
    Thanks so much!

    Hi,
I bought a couple cameras from Lensrentals.com... but they were brand new. I've never used Lensauthority, so am unfamiliar with them.
I'd be a little reluctant to buy a lens that's been rented a lot. They get pretty hard use by folks who probably aren't as careful with them as they would be if they owned them. I'm sure those lenses also spend a lot of time bouncing around in the back of a UPS truck, going to and from renters.
OTOH, I know Lensrental thoroughly test stuff and don't hesitate to have repairs and tune-ups done, as necessary. And Canon L series are built to be durable and last a long, long time. And I believe I read that Lensrentals only keeps gear in stock for a year or two, renewing their stock regulrarly.
So I guess it comes down to price... It would have to be a pretty nice discount to get me to reach for my credit card. I'd be inclined to look at refurbs and used lenses at the various dealers, first. They also offer a warranty... One year on the refurbs at the Canon online store. Maybe 90 days on used stuff at the more reputible dealers. Other than new (and on sale!), those would be my first choices.
My next choice would be a private party locally, where I could inspect the item myself before handing over any monies. No warranties at all, with private party purchases. I suppose I'd rank purchasing a rental lens from an outfit I know, like Lensrentals, somewhere in between refurb or used from a dealer and used from a private party. I'd rank an unfamiliar rental outfit a bit lower.
Next I'd rank buying via an auction as a little more risky than buying locally. A lot of variables though... there are many reputible sellers on auctions, too. Feedback info can help.
The riskiest... and what I'd generally be least inclined to do... is buy remotely from a private party, sight unseen, even with a supposed right of return or warranty.
But, again, it all depends upon price. And scarcity... I bought a rare accessory for one of my cars off Craigslist in Miami (I'm in California). But I was only risking $160 US and it is an utterly impossible to find part. That transaction turned out just fine.
I have bought items through Amazon, even used from private parties. There's at least some limited warranty doing that... maybe only a week or two, but that's often enough.
I've also bought a few use items"remotely"  from people on forums (photography-on-the.net Canon forum and Fred Miranda), but mostly limited to well-established, long time members who I felt like I knew (and had good feedback on prior sales).
It is possible to buy extended warranties even on used items. However I usually don't care for those warranties. Most are with third parties, repairs won't be through a factory service dept. and might cut corners. No telling what a replacement, if needed, might be or how long it might take to get it. Of all the extended warranty programs, the one I hear mentioned most often is Mack. You might look into that.
Also check your credit cards. Many of them warrant items you buy, or automatically extend a factory warranty.
