BOUNCED SPAM I HAVEN'T SENT?

I subscribe to .mac mail, to which all email sent to my domain name is forwarded.
For the past week or so I keep on getting emails from such entities as MAIL DELIVERY SYSTEM, or MAILER-DAEMON, or BARRACUDA SPAM FIREWALL, etc, all notifying me of a "Delivery failure notification"; I opened a few of these emails and they all appear to be "bounced" messages that I presumably sent.
But I didn't!
I cannot change my email address since, as I mentioned, this consists of my domain name ([email protected]); I notice that the "bounced" emails use my domain name but with a different prefix ([email protected]).
I had this happen a few times in the past, but the present situation involves SEVERAL HUNDREDS SUCH 'BOUNCED' MESSAGES AN HOUR!
Many of these (but not all) go straight to my Junk folder.
What can I do?
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hello Joel.
A spammer is using your your domain name with a phony email address (prefix) to appear as the sending email address for a bulk spam mailing and there isn't much if anything you can do about it.
It has happened to me with one of my valid email addresses and to many others but it shouldn't happen for long since spammers are constantly changing the phony email address that appears as the sending email address for their garbage.
I'm for life in prison doing hard labor for these low life individuals.

  • Apple Mail - Unread Spam Messages/ Inbox and Sent Folder

Fellow apple users ... I recently upgraded from Windows to iMac, what is amazing (but could not afford it until now). I love it, but ... I do have a few problems:
1/ I have two IMAP email account. My problem is that the Spam and Junk are being treated as New, Unread Messages. I really do not care about these and would like to see a notification only for mail which comes to my Inbox. Any ideas how this could be done ? I am sure there might be an easy setting ... if not then just setting up a Rule?!
2/ Probably this is a feature of Mail, but I would like to disable it. The INBOX, SEND and DRAFT are being showed in different tabs (e.g. I need to press 'show' 'hide'). I would like to have Inbox, sent draft under each account and not separate. How can I disable this?
3/ Sent messages. Since I am using IMAP I should have a copy of my sent messages in the 'sent' folder but the iMac sent messages do not appear sent folder on my iPhone. I checked if the messages are being saved in the same imap folder and it does look like they are ... so not sure?!
    Any ideas reply is welcome.
    Regards,
    Siki

    Hi Ernie,
Thank you for your reply and explination.
1/ Yes, the instructions did help. It was obvious, but I haven't ever used Mac's. They are the best, but switching over it's not the easiest.
2/ Have been thinking about changing to another mail client because of this (Thunderbird). Usually everything with iOS X makes sense, but having the MAILBOXES option and sub-structure (Inbox, Flagged, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash) is beyond me at the moment (a lightbulb might go off in the future ...)
3/ Not sure why, but now everything is working fine. Could be becuase of the update to iOS 6.

  • I thing I have some phishing going on, there has been some emails going around that I haven't sent plus getting emails from friends who haven't sent them, what to do?

I think I have some phishing going on, there has been some emails I have received from people I know that haven't been sent also people have said I've sent out some when I haven't , how do I investigate this?

What you describe is generally not an issue with your computer. Everyone gets phishing e-mails unless you or your ISP has blocked them.
As for e-mails from friends that they didn't send, these are usually because someone insists on putting 200 address in their e-mails with a link to a cat video. If people used distribution lists or the bcc field for mass mailings, the chance of this is reduced. Probably one of your frineds has a Windows virus that is stealing e-mail addresses, or their hotmail. msn, or outlook account has been hacked.
You probably don't need to do anything from your end

  • Says my email has exceeded its limit, but I haven't sent out 500 emails in one day. I only sent out 4 groups of about 20.

Keeps bouncing my emails out of outlook and when I use firefox directly out of gmail, it says I have exceeded my limit of 500 per day. Which I have not sent out that many today.

That's actually a message from Google, not Firefox. Doing a search for "500 emails exceeded limit" brings up http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=1c5a1c902b7037e9&hl=en which suggests that your account may have been compromised.
You need to talk to Google about it. Good luck!

  • Message failure notices about emails I haven't sent

Starting yesterday, I began receiving message failure emails in by inbox and junkfolder about emails that I didn't send. When I got the first message, it seemed apparent that I was hacked, so I quickly changed my email password. Since then, the failure
notices have continued so I changed my password one more time. Again, the emails have continued. It appears that the emails from my email address are being sent all over the world... Australia, Germany... etc. I've emailed Outlook to ask them their advice.
Any thoughts that anyone has on what more I can do would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

    Hi Friend,
Generally, this kind of problem occurs due to the virus/malware attack on a computer or Outlook. Scan your whole computer with Antivirus program and contact with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) coordinator to fix this issue either it can create a big
    trouble for your PC.

  • Have some kind of virus or trojan horse -- dozens of spam messages are being sent out from my PC. Is there anything I can do?

The messages do not show up in my Sent folder. Many of them are sent to dead email addresses and the only way I know that this is happening is from the "failure to deliver" messages from the Mail Administrator.

  • TS4002 Can't sent email from iCloud mail iMac, due to exceeding daily limits. Haven't sent an email today. Works on iPhone, though.

Unable to send email message from iMac (os x Mavericks 10.9.4) from iCloud mail due to "exceeding daily sending limits". Have not sent any emails today. As a test, I emailed a message to myself using iCloud mail from iPhone. Able to open email on iMac, respond to that email and sent it without an error message.  But keep getting exceeding limits message with new email.

  • HT4863 What can I do if I have "exceeded the sending limit" but I personally haven't sent more than 3  emails. How do I fix it?

How do you fix email message sending limit when the email account has been spoofed?

Spoofed or hacked? It's easy for someone to forge your address as the 'From' address, but that wouldn't involve using the iCloud server and your account and would have no effect on your limit.
If you have actually been hacked, so that someone has been sending using your account, then you need to change your password immediately to something really strong and unguessable. If they have taken you over your limit you will have to wait 24 hours after which you should be able to send again.

  • Hey guys! I went to Mexico over spring break and messed up my email settings. Now I can't send any emails what so ever, but I can get them. It says that an outgoing mail server smpt.live has failed. So...I need help! I haven't sent an email since march!

    #emailhelp

Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

  • HT4899 I  have received over a hundred emails today as bounce backs from emails I didn't send to email addresses unknown to me.  Obvious spam type content.  Anyone else have issues on a .ME account?

I am receiving multiple "undeliverable" emails as response to emails I did not send.  I am getting deluged on my .ME account.  Anyone?

When people receive emails which appear to come from their own address but they haven't sent they naturally tend to be concerned: however it's most unlikely that anyone has hacked their account, they've just been targeted by one of two common spammers' techniques: both arise because it's all too easy to forge the 'from' address on messages to be something other than the real one.
There are two things that can happen. One is that the sender has forged the 'from' address to be the same as the 'to' address (so other people will see it coming from themselves, not you), presumably in the hope of confusing spam filters. It's harmless, if extremely annoying. Delete it (never ever answer spam or try to unsubscribe from it), and you don't need to be worried about it.
The other problem, which appears to be what is affecting you, is that a spammer is forging your address as the 'from' address on a whole batch of messages. The first thing you hear about this is when you start getting bounce messages because the spam has been sent to non-existent addresses and is being bounced to you. There's no point at all in responding to it. It's infuriating but normally stops after a bit as they move on to another forged address.
There isn't really anything you can do about it: closing the account isn't really worth the hassle unless you are totally swamped, because you will have to tell everyone your new address. Apple can't really do any more than they already are about spam.

  • Mail account screwed up after bouncing some spam emails back to sender

Alright, so I noticed the other day that you could right click on a spam message and bounce it back so it looks like you're not a valid email address. Tried it a few times and it seemed to work ok. They always bounced back to me since it probably wasn't the spammer's actual address, but anyway.
Yesterday I bounced a few back and the "Mail delivery" messages came back like they usually do. I deleted them. They came back...many many times. Sometimes they come back as new messages, sometimes they just magically appear back in my inbox after I've moved them to the trash.
The girl I work with bounced some messages (on a G4 tower) and her Mail is doing the exact same thing. There are a bunch of other PC's in the office and their mail seems to be working fine.
Now I know this may well be a problem with Dreamhost (the hosting company), and I've put in a ticket to them, but it really worries me the way my email account is acting; like it's corrupted or something. The webmail does work, but it's waaaay slow.
It's a POP3, and I have tried rebuilding the mailbox.

Why do you people keep bouncing spam?
If the bounce doesn't reach the destination, it's just a waste of time and bandwith, plus a source of problems, because in all likelihood it'll be bounced back to you.
If the bounce reaches the destination, then it's even worse, because you're either (1) telling the spammer that your address is valid and that you're willing to spend time on his/her/its junk, or (2) contributing to the spammer's effort by sending his/her/its junk to the innocent whose address was stolen for sending it (and who, in turn, might end up posting in a forum such as this wondering why does he/she receive bounces for messages he/she hasn't sent).
So what exactly is the point of bouncing spam? Don't you have anything better to do with your time?
OK, enough ranting. Back to the problem, you'll have to somehow remove the offending messages from the server first. After doing that, you'll have to re-create Envelope Index. Problem is, while re-creating the index Mail may choke on the messages you couldn't delete, so either be prepared for that or perform optional steps 1 and 3:
    1. (Optional, but recommended). If this is a POP account, try to find in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/ the *.emlx files associated with the troublesome messages. Viewing the *.emlx files as List in the Finder showing the creation/modification date may help. Just identify them; do not get rid of them yet (you must quit Mail first).
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. (Optional, but recommended). If you found the troublesome *.emlx files in step 1, move them to the Trash.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    5. Locate the Envelope Index file and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    6. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate Deleted Messages.mbox, and move it to the Trash. I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
    7. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Spam Getting Sent to Phone

Lately, I've noticed that when I receive spam it correctly gets sent to my spam folder, but not before it gets downloaded to Thunderbird and also shows up on my phone.  I've tried filters to delete the spam before it even makes it to the spam folder with no success.  This behavior is a recent problem and I haven't changed anything on my system or phone.  Anyone else notice this?  Is there anything I can do to keep the spam from being distributed to my devices?

I have had the sam problem.  I have so many filters set up to "try" to combat SPAM and nothing seems to work.  Most mobile mail programs don't have reliable filter settings.  Not to mention, you have to setup all of the filters on each device; which is tedious.
One thing that really chapped my hide was when I looked for a solution to deal with unsolicited email.  The help section sent me to a page that had only router power settings http://www22.verizon.com/support/residential/internet/fiosinternet/email/troubleshooting/questionson....
    What a joke.
