Bouncing icons system locked when in safari

I am using Mountian Lion 10.8.3 and now when I run safari,  after a while the system freezes and the icons just bounce...I have a late 2009 i5 Quad Core iMac.  Any ideas?

To solve the immediate problen with the system being locked up, try to bring up the Force Quit window, which is available from the Apple menu.  If you can't use the Apple menu, press Command-Option-Escape on the keyboard.  If there is an app that is listed with red text (such as Safari in this case) on the Force Quit window, select it and try to Force Quit it.
If you can get control of your system back, restart the Mac.  If you cannot get control of the system (still locked up and not responsive), press and hold the power button until you force a shutdown.  Then, start up normally.
The next step is figuring out why Safari has this problem...  Are you saying that Safari regularly causes the system to "freeze" and become unresponsive?  So it happens every time you use Safari for an extended period?

  • Help with occasional system locks when logging out or rebooting

Basically what's happening is occasionally when logging out, restarting, or rebooting from an X session, I get a total system freeze. The screen goes blank and there's no input possible. I'm not seeing anything in the logs. The card is using the xf86-video-intel driver and used to work fine with the i810 driver.
There are some similar threads around like this one:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=65469
but it's still somewhat different. For me it only happens occasionally and I lose complete control of the system. This was happening when starting from GDM, and is now happening from starting either with 'exec startlxde' or 'exec ck-launch-session startlxde' (current). GDM is gone now (Hurray! Whoopy! Yahoo!)
One of the solutions listed in the above thread was to remove the vga= line from the kernel command in menu.lst. I don't have that. Another solution was to add it. I didn't try it yet. If this were the problem, wouldn't the behavior be consistent?
It's worth mentioning for a bunch of attempts yesterday I couldn't log in with startx, and I was getting a number of different errors in Xorg.0.log. Today it's working. I have no idea why; It's the same xorg.conf and same software as before.
I'm out of ideas. Got any?

I really could use some ideas with this. The machine in question isn't in my possession very often and it needs to 'just work'. I've since removed everything from lxde except for the panel and am now using a straight openbox session.
The machine only blanks when shutting down, logging out, or restarting. I do have control over the power button, so it will power off. Unfortunately this just kills it, so the file system is uncleanly mounted. Eventually this is going to kill data (if it hasn't already).
I want to reiterate that there is nothing in the logs that everyone isn't seeing with the intel drivers. I've been through countless bug trackers, as well as threads here and elsewhere. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get this machine to close gracefully? If I can't get X/intel to play nicely, is there something I can do to get the power button to close the system properly?

  • Snow Leopard Mail - Bouncing Icon/Play Sound Rules Cancel Each Other Out

I recently saw a movie which featured many closeups of a MacBook Pro being used; every time the actor got an e-mail message, the Mail icon bounced in the Dock AND played the New Message Sound. In the current version of Snow Leopard Mail, you can create a Rule to 'Bounce Icon in Dock' when a new message is received. Unfortunately, this disables the New Message Sound. When the user adds another Rule to 'Play Sound', this rule disables the 'Bounce Icon in Dock' feature. At this point, both Rules display as being active, but only one of them works. Anyone know how to get both the New Message Sound AND the bouncing icon? (The actor was able to do it in the movie, but maybe that was just special effects.)

    Look at that:

You can use both rules together (sound & bouncing)
    I had test it!

  • Bouncing icon from hidden dock?

Normally I keep the dock automatically hidden at the bottom of the screen to save screen real estate, but I would like to be able to see the Mail icon bounce when new mail arrives. I do have a rule set up in Mail to bounce the Mail icon when a new message arrives, but when the dock is hidden, the bouncing icon remains invisible. Is there any way to make the bouncing icon visible even when the dock is hidden?

I have never used the bouncing icon rule, but I will see what happens. I just set it for one of my accounts. I have the dock hidden as well.
This is the exact opposite of people who do not want icons bouncing when the dock is hidden, such as software update or other such events.

    Hi snoreaustralia,
It sounds like you just need to associate the PDF filename extension with Acrobat, rather than Preview. Please see this document from the Microsoft Help for instructions on choosing the default program for opening a particular file type (in your case, PDF): Change which programs Windows uses by default - Windows Help

  • No Safari just bouncing icon

Hi there- below is a copy and paste from a previous user (in italics):
+I accidentally installed Safari 3.1 on my G4 10.3.9. Somehow I was confused and thought that it would run on my OS.+
    Wrong.
    +Problems caused:+
+Various programme's did not run, like, of course, Safari.+
    Solution:
    +1) Download Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/+
    +2) Download the Safari.pkg 1.2 and 1.3.1 versions+
+3) Run Pacifist: first install 1.2 followed by 'repair disk permissions' in disk utility+
    +4) restart+
+5) run Pacifist, install via Pacifist safari.pkg 1.3.1.+
    +Now the follwing is IMPORTANT+
+6) After installing Safari.pkg 1.2 I got the message that 1.3.1 was already installed which was NOT the case since I checked APPLE-key-'I' Safari and it said 1.2. I guess, but I am not a specialist, that this has caused the problem. Old files cause 'erratic' behavior.+
+Pacifist asks if you want to replace the Safari 1.3.1 files which are already in place. At this point you should enter 'YES'. It will install the correct 1.3.1 files.+
+7) after this, restart the computer, repeat the 'repair disk permissions' procedure in disk utility.+
+In my case it worked and all other programme's work again.+
I did all the above (several times) but still no luck. I tried Firefox but yet again bouncing icon. When I look at the version of Safari installed, it says 1.3.1 but won't run.
Stupid question- when running "repair disk permissions" do I select the hard drive in the lefthand pane?
    Any further suggestions?

You probably would be better off at this point with an Archive & Install. it is relatively painless and will give you a fresh OS. It would also be a good idea to back up your data first to an external hard drive. Here's how to Repair Permissions.

  • Icon bounces and alert sounds when closing document

I couldn't find any info on this in the knowledgebase, help, or forums but I'm hoping someone else has seen this and can help.
When I open a PDF in Acrobat Pro 8.0, and the program has just been opened: if I close the PDF I was viewing, Acrobat's icon bounces and I get a beep (my system alert beep). The icon continues to bounce until I click on it, but there are no other warning windows and it doesn't happen again until I've restarted Acrobat.
Does anyone know what this is and how I can disable it?

I think I have a fix... and I have tried them all without success but this one worked. Tech support gave me these instructions. It broke Acrobat though. It would immediately crash and give me a message saying Acrobat had a serious problem and that I should reinstall it. Once I reinstalled it though, no more bouncing icon. Below are the insructions from Tech.
    From Tech
"Try the following: Go to your HDD > Library > Applications Support.
Control Click on the Adobe folder and click on Get Info. Under
Ownership and Permissions, see if you have Read access or Read and Write
Access. If you only have Read
access, click on the details to expand the list, and unlock the Owner
section. Set yourself to be the owner and set it to read and write.
Click the button at the very bottom to Apply to
    enclosed Items.
Do the same to the FLEXnet Publisher folder in Application support.
I have seen this behavior sometimes happen if you do not have read and
write access to one or more folders that the authentication process
    needs when you launch Acrobat.
Acrobat checks for authentication after a few seconds of being open. If
it fails, Acrobat closes without an error. Resetting the permissions to
full read and write will hopefully clear
    up the problem."

  • System lock ups when using hard disks

At first I thought I had the same issue as in this thread however after reading his logs I decided that it is unlikely since the topic opener seems to be getting a bunch of
Apr 4 17:00:15 daxteriv slim[708]: (Do:882): GLib-CRITICAL **: Source ID 46 was not found when attempting to remove it
, so I decided to start a new thread.
I am not getting anything in my logs when I look at them after the crashes. It seems as if whatever is causing the issue makes it impossible to write to the drives so nothing seems out of place until after it's too late, and quite obvious that something is wrong. The sole exception to this was some complaint about ata9.00, however this seems to have been a red haring since the complete removal of this drive solved nothing, though it did make the error go away.
I have run memtest, and prime95 (in windows since at the time I didn't want to boot my system) both coming back negative. I also checked for SMART errors, particularly UDMA errors. Again, negative.
Here are some previous threads of mine that I believe to be all related to the same issue:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=195449
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=193937
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192704
[edit3] My previous thought was that this was a btrfs issue, however now I think it may be more hardware related.[/edit3]
Last night I was writing urandom to a new drive and I woke up in the morning to see that it had stopped prematurely, but not due to lack of space. The system had not locked up completely, which was new, however, as soon as I did something that accessed the disks (tried using the Gnome Dash), all hell broke loose. I immediately hit the power button, which would start a shutdown. I didn't know about REISUB, or I would have tried that. In anycase the shutdown failed and I had to hard reboot.
The evening before I was playing games just fine and doing normal activities.
Also, the other day, while booted into the live cd I think it started to crash since it was acting extremely bizarre, but I shutdown, successfully, before it could do more than complain a lot. At the time I was in the middle of scrubbing a btrfs volume after a system lock up. I think, but am not certain, that I saw on my motherboard "A5" which, according to the manual indicates "SCSI reset", but I had an extremely bad viewing angle. I know neither if what I think I saw was correct, nor do I know if the system was again in the process of a meltdown.
In general there is no activity that seems to be able to instantly trigger this, though in each case, if my memory serves me well, there was a constant stream of data either to or from a HDD.
My set up is that I have 5 HDDs, and an SSD. One HDD has Windows, my fallback installation of Arch, and daily backups. Another drive, which I just installed a few days ago currently only has single 50GB btrfs partition that is not part of any sort of larger volume. I also have three other drives each with four parttitions each involved in a btrfs volume. At the top is a 175 GB volume in a RAID0 configuration,  after that is a 25GB partiton in RAID1, then a 650GB partion (RAID1), and the remainder of the disk (about 80GB) is in single. The RAID0 is has games on it and sometimes for short term storage (a few hours), the 25GBx3 RAID1 is used for Arch as well my ~/.local, ~/.cache, ~/.thunderbird, ~/.mozilla, and ~/.config. The 50GB partition I mentioned is currently doing the job of this volume, and was not mounted last night, but has been before. The 650GBx3 is used for long term storage of just about everything, in particular ~ is mounted here. The single configured volume is used for downloads, storing ISOs and installers. The SSD is used for caching those partitions used in the RAID0 volume with bcache. I DO NOT think this is a bcache issue since the RAID0 volume has never had any errors.
My motherboard is a ASUS X79-DELUXE which has the SATA controllers: Intel X79 Express Chipset, Marvell 9230, ASMedia 1061.
[edit] Oh, I'm on kernel 3.19.2 and btrfs is 3.19.
[edit2] Also, I converted the RAID0 to a single in case that matters.
[edit4] I finished scrubbing and copied my "journalctl -b" output to pastebin. I can't see any thing that might raise any flags. http://pastebin.com/WXpbpTuc

nstgc : it's hard to tell if your problems are memory related, but memtst often needs multiple passes to detect errors.
How many passes did you let it make ?
Is it possible for you to take out say half of the memory chips and see if that changes anything ?

Kindly help.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

  • Safari locks when opening PDF

Need some help. Been looking for updates for Safari for windows no luck so far.. Now need the help of experts... Safari locks when opening a page that opens a PDF file. Is some-one able to help with info?
    I know I'm bad windows....

Safari (3.1.1) crashes each time I open a pdf file, even when i just access it from a local drive. I use adobe acrobat 8.1.2. Reading pdf files via Safari used to work fine until a certain Acrobat update a couple of months ago.
The behavior is that when I open any pdf file, it will display for about 5 seconds, and then shut down all the Safari Windows and Safari itself. When Safari is not loaded, clicking on the pdf will open Safari, and then shut it down after 5 seconds.
    Please help? and thanks!
