I really enjoy iTunes and iPod. However, I have a question about other mp3 players and the future of electronic music. It is my understanding that iTunes will only work with iPod and no other mp3 players. (While frustrating to a consumer, it makes sense from Apple's view.) However, what if a competitor comes out with a better player? To switch to that other player, must one start all over with a different type of music library and download or import all the songs again in a different format?

Probably not, the default import setting for iTunes is AAC @ 128kbps. In order to check, iTunes>edit>preferences>advanced>importing tab, at that point, you can see what the setting is & you can also make changes to that import setting.
I need to clarify one point, you mention m4p, m4p is the format for the protected AAC purchases from the store. The iTunes Plus files which are protection free will be purchased AAC format, (,m4a), the CD's you import in AAC will also be .m4a.

Sorry, but Apple IDs cannot be merged. You can, however, use more than one Apple ID/iTunes Store account on your computer and hence on your iPhone. If you've forgetten the password to your older ID, see:

once you get in, you can change the email address associated with that ID so that receipts and such are emailed to a current address.

Don't panic. OS X 10.5.8 is the most popular PowerPC OS out there. People run it everyday without security breaches, including myself. It isn't Windows!

Several times I've re-entered my passwords under Preferences/Internet Accounts/iCloud and it won't save since I've installed Mavericks. Also, the iCloud icon in the left column in Preferences/Internet Accounts/iCloud is greyed out but allows me to click on it to set-up. When I click on iCloud the password is filled out but the "Enable this account" check-box is not checked. I check it, and all seems correct. The icon is no longer grey, the password is correct, the "activate this account" check-box is checked. Then, when I launch mail, notes etc. I'm still prompted to re-enter my apple ID. The log-in loop continues. For years my keychain has worked perfectly. What has changed in Mavericks?

Also, once I re-downloaded everything, cleaned everything up, and deleted duplicate files, I closed down my computer. Ok, so after like 4 days of going through all these different issues, I figured out that several programs weren't downloading, and it was an issue with my wireless connectivity messing up the digital signatures, so if you plug in your comp to the modem and delete your temp files, it should start to work!

Three 5th gen nanos. One NOT recognized by itunes and computer; other 2 fine.

I have 3 daughters and three 5th gen nanos. I use the same cord, plug and computer, and one is not being recognized by itunes or computer and will not charge; other 2 fine. Something wrong with just the one. Resetting (pressing menu and center until apple appears?) doesn't work. One daughter very SAD. Please help if you can.

I think I found the problem, and it may be useful to others. I cosely looked at the dock connector next to the earphone jack and found that it has a chip in it. Not good news for Gen 5 ipod nano's. Apparently, the connector is bonded to the logic board. I did find that if I gently put pressure on it in one directio or the other, it will make a connection.
Must break the bad news to daughter. Sad face.

When I got the error message, "msvcr80.dll" and it said to uninstall iTunes and all other apple products I did that. I've reinstalled iTunes several times and I continue to get the message, "apple application support not found". This isn't working. Help.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times and each time it says to re-install iTunes but it doesn't solve the problem. I've been trying to get this to work all day and I'm extremely frustrated. Someone please help me with this. I've done all the reserach on how to fix this and nothing has worked. When I go do download iTunes I get a screen that says, "The feature you are tyring to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." Then is says "Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package iTunes64.msi in the box below". I click "OK" and it says that the path cannot be found. Sounds like at least two different things are happening to you at once here.
Steps for dealing with the "network resource" message, follow:
(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
(5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Hi . I recently updated my macbook air late 2008 to 10.7.0 from 10.6.8 . My google chrome , itunes and some other apps are not working .

i want to update to 10.7.1 , so i download the update from apple.com but its not installing " saying can't be installed on my disk . What to do ?
i all ready tried download the update again and again .... because i read somewhere in apple support that the update should be of more than 70mb but mine is of 60 or 58mb . Suggest me a way to update .

If you use Software Update it will designate the 10.7.1 specific for your model, and may miss somethings. It is better to download the update straight off Apple's website. Mind you, unless you know your software is not compatible with 10.7.2 or later, I recommend at minimum upgrading to 10.7.3. That's where I found to be my happy medium with. Run repair permisssion with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility when you are finished. If you have any third party cache cleaning software remove it. Especially remove MacKeeper if that got installed using these directions since it has given people more headaches than any. The only utility you need is a backup utility. And periodically let the machine stay awake running screen saver instead of energy saver. This will keep the logfiles clean. The combo updates are better than the delta updates. Combo updates do multiple updates at once.

The OTHER in iTunes and Ipad

I don't down load videos or music to my ipad. Nor do store much on there I use to for work, but I do have icloud set up and I watch some purchased shows through the cloud. after I watch a movie it tells me my memory is almost full. I plug it into iTunes and the OTHER is full.... I cant get it to go away, I tried all the fixes that have been discussed through these communities. I end up having to restore my iPad once a week, this has only started happening since ios 7 and its getting to be a pain. what do I need to do to prevent this. I cant believe 1 movie I stream over the cloud can cause this, and I restore it every time as a new iPad incase its a corrupt sync.

Yes, I have checked off each of the 4 movies and did not click on the "manually manage videos & photos". At one point I even scratch the entire ipad and started it as "new", and added everything back on ....... they did display at first (the 4 movies), but the next time I synced, it went back to the over movies and the 4 movies disappeared .......

Welcome to the Support Communities! Here are some steps you can try if you keep getting asked to authorize your MacBook for iTunes:

If you authorize your computer to play your iTunes Store purchases, but you can't play them and iTunes keeps prompting you to authorize, try these suggestions.
Authorize your purchases from an administrator account

ITunes and QuickTime won't start

The problem is that I've installed iTunes, everything went fine, but when I'm trying to start it with iTunes.exe, it won't start.
I can see iTunes.exe in the task manager, for about 5 seconds, and then it disappears.
The same happens with QuickTime player(I don't really care about QuickTime but I thought it can help solving the problem).
I know there is a lot of topics about this on the internet, and yes I've googled it, but nothing solved my problem.
I tried a lot of things already:
* start iTunes.exe with administrator rights
* start iTunes.exe with XP and Vista compatibility modes
* reinstall iTunes with XP and Vista compatibility modes
* uninstall iTunes (and any other apple software), clean any leftover iTunes registry entry, and then reinstall everything again
* boot my windows 7 in safe boot mode, and try to start iTunes.exe
* turn off bonjour service then restart computer and try to start iTunes
* create a new user account, login and try to start iTunes
Nothing helped on Windows 7 32bit, though I have a Windows XP installed as a Virtualbox guest(the host OS is linux), and there is everything works fine, but I would like to use Windows 7.
I had the same problem with the previous version of iTunes. Now I'm trying to install the latest iTunes downloaded from the Apple's site.
I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Many thanks. Yes, let's first try uninstalling the ACE pack and seeing if iTunes will launch now.
If iTunes doesn't launch, the pack may have left behind old QuickTime version 6.x componentry in unorthodox locations in your Windows 7 system files. So we'll go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
1. From the Start menu, click Computer.
2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

Setting series and episode of a TV show in iTunes and now the video won't play

I have an episode of a TV show in my iTunes library that plays just fine on my laptop and Apple TV. The moment I set the TV shows name, series and episode number (so that it is grouped with the rest of the series) the file will not play on laptop or Apple TV.
I'm usually ok on iTunes and all other TV shows I am adding I am able to set the tags without any problems.....it's just this one file.

Thank you so much for your reply! I ended up calling Apple Support. (My phone was still eligible for free support.) The person was very helpful and was able to help me resolve the problem. In my case, it involved deleting itunes and some other things from my PC computer and reinstalling them. Works perfectly now.
