Boxed set vs. downloads - which is preferable?

In general, are downloads preferred for any technical reason over having the boxed set of software mailed to you?

I prefer the boxed sets since that eliminates wasting resources (time, electricity, and bandwidth) DLing or re-DLing the stuff. Also, allows you to install w/o being tied to the Internet.

  • Beatle Box Set Didn't Download

Tried to redeem the iTunes gift card Beatles Box Set I was given for Xmas. I have the latest version of iTunes. When I attempted to redeem the gift card, I received a message that stated the gift card had already been remeemed. I cannot find it in my iTunes library or anywhere else on my computer. An iTunes senior technician said it is an engineering problem. It has been almost two weeks since this issue arose and I have not had resolution yet. All correspondence with iTunes support people is done online. I can't even discuss this with a live body. Very frustrated and disappointed at Apple.

Try emailing Apple tech support again, and if they do reply, attach the copy of the receipt that came with the card. (in this case, since you received the gift card as a gift, a gift receipt). This will show that gift card was in fact purchased.
Also, check your iTunes account to see if the gift card was actually redeemed. If it was successfuly redeemed (when I mean redeemed, either content was downloaded or not downloaded), Apple usually sends you the iTunes receipt via email, even if the purchase was made via gift card. If you can't find the receipt, you can also find the receipt via order history on iTunes.
If there is a receipt that just have the Beatles Box set, (which should say "free" instead of $149, since it was redeemed via gift card), there should be the order number. Attach that to the email also. This allows Apple to look up the order quicker.

  • HT201322 Is it possible to buy a TV box set on iTunes but only download one season at a time

I cannot afford to use up all the space it would take to download four seasons of a tv box set. Is there a way I can purchase the box set but only store locally one season at a time?

I misunderstood you. I thought you had a link to a mini-DVI to HDMI cable. That's why I asked for the link.
You can use the adapter you linked to and get a DVI to HDMI cable locally and it will work for you.
Sorry about the confusion on my part.

  • How can I sort and break out a boxed set download

I recently downloaded one of iTunes' full compilations - various artists, 75 songs in total.
There was also an option to buy smaller sets of these at about 20+ songs per individual set, but I went for it all.
Maybe this is too anal, but I was hoping to burn the 75 onto audio CDs in their order/mix of the smaller sets that iTunes had offered. I don't see how I can do that since all I have is 75 songs added to my library on a certain date with no other useful identifier to help segregate them. The track listings and disk # listings apparently only refer to each song's original artist's album (not the iTunes compiled albums).
This box set isn't offered anymore - at least I can't find it (Valentine's Day - Complete Box Set) so I can't tell how the songs were broken out into their smaller sets.
Am I asking for too much, or is there a way to sort these in their intended order that iTunes had set up?

    15 FP iMac 800mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1gb RAM; 60gb intl/250gb extl HD

I was mainly looking for an easier way of setting up separate playlists to burn the CDs and not have to select & drag individual songs myself manually. The way they're listed now in my iTunes library is alphabetically by song name, even if I sort by "Date Added".
As for their original order, I've seen iTunes sell compilations like these in subsets such as: "Starter Set", "From Deep in the Vault", "Rarities" or similar categories. If the Music Store had a sales reason to segregate them into specific albums, I assumed (incorrectly) that they would stay in their own 'Albums' once I downloaded them all at once.
Guess I'll just start dragging songs A thru Z over to new playlists and call it good. I appreciate the reply.

I am getting an error message when downloading the beatles box set/iTunes lp.  States the file isn't there.  please advise.

    Hi,
First of all, you have to identify the scheduler server in case you have a multiserver installation.(Server Managr->Options->Server options). Then you have to follow the steps:
    1. Go on Scheduler server, open Control Panel->Scheduled Tasks and delete all the jobs starting with DM_<appset>*
    2. Run the query into the appset sql db:
        delete from tblSchedule
You can run the steps by application as well(if you have problem only for a specific application):
    1. delete all jobs starting with DM_<appset>_<application>*
    2. delete from tblSchedule where App='<application>'
    Best regards,

  • Box Set Download

    Hello
I love your box sets but could we please get a button that downloads an entire seris in one rather than having to do each episode individually. Also can you stop the pop up that says when a download is available, its pretty annoying.

Yep - being able to download a whole series would be great. Something that's been asked for plenty of times, but as yet Sky don't seem to be listening - about time they did imo. Thanks very much for the info regarding download notification. Didn't know you could do that!

  • My box set downloads have been deleted

Hi there, I came to my downloads yesterday to watch the walking dead S4 and the first 8 episodes of S5, only to find they have been deleted, but not by Us. Has anybody else had this problem please. It has always been this programme!!!!  Thanks

The deletion date is often later than the expiry date, so that could be why they were only deleted yesterday. Box Sets come and go all the time - and often various seasons within a box set, so other seasons still being available isn't much of an indication unfortunately. I honestly don't know if that's what's happened here - just suggesting a possible cause of what you experienced.

  • Which Mac Box Set ?

    Hi
I want to upgrade from Tiger (10.4.11) to Snow Leopard.
I understand that I must purchase the Mac Box Set. I want to upgrade one imac which has four user accounts on the one imac.
Do I need to purchase the Box Set for one user or the Box Set for 5 users which appears to offer the ability to load the software on 5 workstations (which i don't want).
    You advice please.

I want to upgrade from Tiger (10.4.11) to Snow Leopard.
I understand that I must purchase the Mac Box Set.
No, that is not necessary. It has been much-discussed here, but there's no difference in the license between the single-user box set and the $29 single-user copy of SL. It's exactly the same OS with exactly the same terms of use. The box set is recommended as "the best way" to upgrade, according to the Apple Store, because it will update old copies of iLife and iWork that may not be very SL-savvy.
I want to upgrade one imac which has four user accounts on the one imac.
The number of user accounts is not controlled by the license. You can have one user or fifteen, for all Apple cares. It would be more accurate to call the "single-user" copy of SL the "single-machine" copy. The license controls how many different machines you can run it on. The 5-user box allows you to run on 5 machines.

  • I have os 10.4. Why do I need the mac box set to upgrade to snow leopard?

I have os 10.4. Why do I need the mac box set to upgrade to snow leopard? What happens if I upgrade with just a 10.6 upgrade?

No iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Garageband, but I can pinch those off the 10.4 installer disk using Pacifist.
You can usually get those from the original grey installer discs that came with your Mac without bothering with Pacifist. Look for an 'installed bundled software' or similarly named item on one of those discs, generally the #1 disc. Run that & the original versions of those apps that were bundled with your Mac will be installed. Software Update will let you know if there is an update you can download for them (but of course that won't include an upgrade to a more recent major version, which you would have to buy separately).

  • HT1349 Upgrade retail Mac Box Set apps in Yosemite through App store.

I did a clean install of Yosemite and am now reinstalling iWork and iLife apps from my retail Mac Box Set. It installs but when I try to upgrade the software I get the message that it does not qualify to upgrade with my User ID. Is this because I didn't originally register it correctly? I tried doing the registration through the iWork apps but still get the same message. Are these earlier apps useless now and must be repurchased through the App Store?

Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
    1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept them into your Apple ID, do so.
    2. Move them out of the Applications folder(they may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If you're asked to buy them, see #3.
    3. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
    4. Buy them.

  • How do I set one wifi network as preferred?

We have 2 wifi modems at home as the signal is bad in some parts of the house with just one.  So I have set up another as a relay.  However, all of our apple iPads/iphones automatically default to the one modem we use the least.  Even if there is no signal bars at all it will default to that modem and never chose the other one which it is set up for unless I manually change it every time I wake up the ipad.  I have tried forgetting the network and then putting them back in in different orders.  But same problem always occurs.  Is there a way to set one network as the preferred first choice network without deleting the other one completely?  Many thanks

system prefs>print and fax>print and you'll see a pulldown menu labelled Selected printer in print dialog. It defaults to Last Printer Used, but you can choose a specific printer if you want that for your default.

I have noticed an issue with utilizing the “stream” function on iOS 7. If you choose to just stream the movie by hitting the play button it seems to actually start downloading (which is fine) but if you are say halfway thru the movie and stop you can clearly see that storage has been reduced under the usage, yet under the “videos” tab it still states “No Data” the only way to delete what you have partially downloaded is to fully download the video, which is fine but there is no way to tell what videos have been partially downloaded (I.e which occurs a lot when your child switches between movies using the so called “stream” function). This becomes troublesome once the capacity of the ipad is almost met and you have no way to delete this data since you may have several videos that have started to be viewed (hence partially downloaded). Apple needs to somehow make it truly streaming or provide an update so the storage can be managed. The only way I have been able to remove partially downloaded videos is by doing a total software restore. (The video data that is in question when connected to my MacBook shows up in iTunes as “other”) if you have any insight into this issue it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here are the screenshots for what it's worth.
Not sure why I can't post them in the original post.<br>

'''Again, when I set my DNS server to automatically detect the servers both problems disappear and I have no issues at all.'''
IMO opendns is either doing this on purpose (unlikely) or they're under some sort of attack/being used to attack the specific torrent sites although I'm open to other explanations. I believe using the automatic setting for DNS is using my own ISP's DNS servers (which again, work fine... but still...)
I'd rather not use Google's public DNS servers as Google is to commercial these days and I think there's potential privacy issues.
'''Again I have changed the setting for DNS servers back and forth several times to duplicate/verify the issue(s)... and the issues only happen with the opendns servers.'''

  • If I purchase a box set of iLife and just install the iDVD component on my new iMac should I be able to make a DVD in the format that plays on a TV DVD?

When I recently purchased my first iMac I was disappointed to find that there was no DVD making facility. I want to make a video of photo's and movie clips and then make a DVD that will play on a TV DVD player. I am thinking of purchasing a box set of iLife that includes iDVD and just installing the iDVD component. Can someone  please confirm that tyhis will work? If not any suggestions?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Up Grade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard (Box Set)

I have a two part Question:
Do I have to do a full install or can I perform a partial install and not to up grade to snow leopard using the Box Set. I read stories the snow Leopard up grade is having issues with certain older programs (i.e. Photo shop, Word etc...) Is this true?
I assume the best method to install would be a Clean and Install or is there another way that it's done? The reason I need to up grade is because of my new modem -Airport Extreme, which requires Leopard.
    Thank for your insight..
    Brad

[Here is a thread describing a successful upgrade install from Tiger to Sno.|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2185421&tstart=125] And, here are my thoughts about moving from Tiger to Sno. I recommend that you use the upgrade method if your Tiger install is a very good one. Otherwise, I would do an erase and install. The backup process I would use in either case is described below.
Your Mac must meet [these general requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]. I would not upgrade to SL unless I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough. If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. You can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you do an erase and install, then the clone also is your migration medium.
An upgrade install is performed by installing over your existing installation from the desktop or having started from your SL DVD. Doing so requires you to have a GUID partition. To proceed, start the installer, choose your language, start Disk Utility, make sure your partition is GUID, quit disk utility if it is and continue your installation. All your data, users settings, and apps will be present after your upgrade, except that incompatible programs will be archived in the Incompatible Software folder. It the partition is not GUID, then you will have to do an erase and install.
If you do an erase and install, then make sure your partition is GUID as described above. After you install, then you will be able to use set up assistant to migrate you data, apps, users, and settings to your new SL install. Also, if you have to make your partition GUID, then your drive will automatically be erased Mac extended (journaled). Finally, post back if you choose to do an erase and install. I have more info to provide.
You probably will want to install at least two of the optional install items on your Sno DVD, Rosetta and QT7. You can install either from the Optional Install Items folder on your on SL install DVD.
Leave your Ethernet cable, if any, in place when installing, but unplug all peripherals except those needed to install.
