Boxes around individual words or letters

Hi. I am currently working on my first project in Pages. I am writing some documentation on using Audacity and iTunes to record and organize audio. To show key sequences, I want to have a small square or rectangle with rounded corners around individual letters or words to show that it is a button to press. For example, for a ctrl+x sequence, I want to display a small box around "ctrl" and "x". Is there any way to do this in Pages '08?

I had played with this before. Looking at it again, I got halfway close to what I want. Before, when I make the object small enough, the corners stayed too rounded and essentially made a small circle. This time, I noticed a small circle control to grab in the upper left when the object is selected. This little circle lets you tweak how rounded or sharp the corners are.
The only remaining problem is that the inner margins of the box are too generous. I put a character in it, but when I shrink it down to fit in line with the other text, the character disappears. Is there a way to lessen the inner margins in a shape so the text is right up to the walls?
EDIT: Ok, disregard that last paragraph - I think I figured it out. With the shape object selected goto Text Inspector->Text and slide the Inset Margin to the far left. Thanks a bunch for pointing me in the right direction!

  • How to create a square box around a word or character

L.S. I am looking for a way to create a square around a word or character like in the exemple. Can indesign do this? And if yes, how? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry about that Peter. I am new at this. This is the image I was talking about. I also found an old post (2008) in the indesign google group.
    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/adobe.indesign.windows/ojCr0qI2GBI
It says inthe 2008 post " . . .  there is no 'border' support for character styles." I was wondering if maybe in CS6 there is a way to achieve this?

  • Darkened box around individual Illustrator elements

    Hello all,
I created a card with a dark gray background which has different flowers on it (all with transparent backgrounds).  All of the flowers are the same PNG file except some of them are different colors (I traced the flowers and used Live Paint to color the petals differently).  For some reason, there is only one type of flower that has a darkened square around the flower when it's printed.  And for some reason it only happens on certain printers and not others.
I was going to just recreate that flower using the other PNG images of that same flower that don't have that issue but just wondering what causes that?  When I exported the JPGs, I selected RGB instead of CYMK - does that affect the images at all?  (I did this because some of the websites to upload pictures don't accept non-RGB images).
Also, the files being printed are JPGS or PDFs that have been exported from Illustrator.
    Thanks.

Thanks - don't have access to Illustrator at the moment but will try that later.  I've attached a scanned image of the problem - as you see the flowers were all created using the same PNG file and traced/live painted with different colors - but the small ones in green all
have a tinted border around them.

Why is my computer displaying A's with boxes around them instead of words? Is this the malware virus of today? I can get on the internet but just can't read anything. Please help!

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and the support article linked below for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode* (by holding down the shift key at the startup chime) to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
    Mac 101: Font Book
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, after running Font Book, launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. After running the command, reboot as usual.

  • I just want to type on a plain piece of paper. I want to type several pages. I go to Pages and the blank paper has a text box around my type and only lets me type 400 words. How do I expand?

I want to type several pages of text. I go to Pages and it puts a text box around my text and only allows 400 words. How do I get unlimited paper? Thanks in advance.

On the introductory window, also make sure you pick from the top choices under Word Processing - I just use "Blank". If you choose the Blank under the sedon set (page layout), you will have to get a text box. I use that setting if I have a lot of images I want to insert and then have text around/near the images.
    See my screenshot here:
When you're done with that page, it should automatically move to the next one or you can choose another blank page in the pulldown in the toolbar.

  • Trouble with grey boxes around certain text or words

We are having trouble with some of our

Did you open the hyperlinks panel and delete the links, or change the highlight? You have to change the highlights one at a time, I think. (I hate Word's automatic hyperling nonsense).

  • White box around text in pdf

Hi. In InDesign CS3, Photoshop 7.0 & of course Acrobat 7.0
I made a Photoshop PDF & brought it into InDesign to export it into a PDF so I can make crop marks.
The PDF in Acrobat & InDesign both had a white box around some of the text. I had embedded the fonts in Photoshop, so I do not understand why that happened. I went back into Photoshop & just retyped over where the box was appearing & this had solved the problem after I repdfed & imported it into ID. Acrobat viewed the text perfect then.
I want to prevent this from happening in the future, does anyone know what I can do to look out for things like this?

Very sorry--that's certainly information I should have included. I have Adobe  Acrobat 9 Standard, version 9.3.3. I'm creating the PDFs from within Microsoft  Word 2007 via the Acrobat tab on the ribbon, clicking "Create PDF."

  • Framemaker 9 PDF exports with red boxes around text areas

I have a doc, made in FM 7, using version 9

you might consider saving the FM file as MIF and then looking at the MIF using the wonderful freebie MIFBrowser, from Graham Wideman, from here:

to find the problem area do a search for the string that is in the title
    "Downblast Centrifugal
    Exhaust Ventilator
    Roof Mounted
    Belt Drive"
although just pasting it here it looks like you might have soft carriage returns in it which will make it necessary to just search for the two-word segments.
After you find the phrase, use the left navigation area to walk "up" the MIF file, looking for the specific structure that those words are in (is it a text box, or rather a graphic frame inside a text box, correct?) Is this an anchored frame, or is it just floating? If it's anchored, where is it anchored?
In the MIF, see if you can identify any odd sounding properties of the text box or graphic frame. The MIF reference manual is a PDF found in the FM documentation folder.
Also, one other possibility is that there's something funky with the red swash that goes across the page that's somehow "contaminating" the text frame. What kind of graphic type is the red swash? Could you take a copy of the FM file and remove the swash and then make a PDF, to see if that solves the red outline.
edit: additional questions: are the swash and the text frame on the body page or on the master page? When Arnis suggested checking for graphics behind the text frame, did you also check the master page(s) as well as the body pages?

  • Suddenly some of the characters in mail have turned into 'A's with boxes around them?

I don't think I changed any settings, but suddenly some of the characters in my emails received have utrned into 'A's with boxes around them. A think the characters that have changed are in italics (see pic below).
Any suggestions what has gone wrong here and how I can fix it?
    Thanks!

*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case only, after running Font Book, launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. After running the command, reboot as usual.

how do I get rid of that bugger

    >I am very new to this, but the way I got round this

That'll work but it requires border="0" to be individually
    added to every
single <img> which is a link in every single page on
    your site.
The method suggested by Alec is created just the once and
    applies
automatically to every single <img> which is a link on
    every page both now
and into the future i.e. nil maintenance.
    I know which I prefer :-)

  • Creating boxes around text....

    Hi,
I'm hoping there is a better solution to this problem then what I've using.
I would like to be able to create a box around text that is able to resize when increasing/decreasing font.
My working solution is to create a text box with text then use direct selection tool to select the anchors and convert that into a shape, either a rectangle or rounded rectangle. This isn't bad since it allows an equal amount of space around the text but it does have problems. If the font size increases or decreases, the box remains the same. I have to use the Area Type Option to resize the box. Also, if I wanted to do this for lots of boxes then I have to select all of the individual anchors which will be time consuming.
    Is there a simpler solution?
    Thanks.

Use the Selection Tool (Black Arrow) to select the text and then add a new Fill via the Appearance Panel.
Move the new fill below the Characters item in the Appearance Panel
With that fill highlighted choose Effect > Convert to Shape > Rectangle

  • How do I put a box around a line of text like I did in Appleworks?

Please help me. I miss the toolbox in Appleworks where I could easily put a box around text, resize it, make it darker, etc. I've tried the Help menu in Pages and am ready to give up. Could someone please walk me through this? I don't want to use templates --just a plain word processing document. However, I used to box text in after I typed it. Thank you very much.

Of course, we may work the other way but the OP asked

which is what we did in AppleWorks and what I explained how we may achieve in Pages.
I added the example of string with a background because often, we used the enclosing rectangle because the backgrounded text was unavailable.
Only the backrgound is able to flow correctly with the text.
An inline text box will change the line spacing.
But in fact this message was mainly written to ask you if the border feature works well for you.
Here, it behaves like the (top + bottom borders).
+I wish to add that I get the same behavior with the French and with the English version, under 10.4 and under 10.5, on the G5 and on the macIntel.+
My workaround is to use a table's cell, not a text block.
