Boxes next to song name / artist

OK... this is getting really annoying... and I dont know what to do!
This is a screeny so people dont get confuzed (I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE CHECK BOXES)
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/272/boxes9jy.png
Its not like the boxes are an eye sore - its jsut when I tranfer them to my iPod, well GG i see 999 of each artist!
This seams to happen randomly - as i have had to remove all the songs from my library and re-add them, even after I had renamed the artist so there were no boxes - and they are back now...
No they are not spaces - when i click to see its information - I see everything normally - no weird characters or spaces...

does foobar 2000 add non-printing characters to the
ends of the info in the individual tag entries (or
something like that), Otto?
Not in the way you mean it, no. It's a bug in iTunes of some sort with regards to ID3v2.4. Nobody seems to be entirely certain of the exact problem, but it seems that iTunes is not properly supporting unsyncronization or the byte order marker in Unicode (UTF-16) tags. Or something along those lines anyway. It's just weird.
Doing a Get Info on the track seems to make the squares go away. It's damned odd, basically. Still, it's reproducable on some people's machines.
Not using ID3v2.4 helps. Stick with 2.3 in programs that give you the option.

  • Feature Request:  iTunes to merge the "Song Name" & "Artist" fields

This is a feature request that i would like to see in a future release of iTunes. The option to merge the "Song Name" & "Artist" fields together. This would be a very valuable option when surfing your iTunes Library thru your iPod, Front Row, or Apple TV.
    Let me explain:
Not everyone knows at the top of their head who sings a particular song. This is especially true when someone other than the owner of the iTunes Library is browsing through it.
Let's say that I want to browse my ENTIRE music collection all at once. The easiest way to do this, is by browsing thru the "Songs" list because it creates 1 massive list displaying ALL the songs in the library, without having to jump into different fields. The current problem with this, is, it only lists the name of the song. There are 2 problems with this philosophy. #1 - You must know who sings the songs to have any chance of making this a useful option because the artist is not displayed. #2 - It puts them in alphabetical based on the song name. Once again, not a very useful way to make this option really functional because you will have the Artists all over the map! Keeping the Artist's songs together makes it a much more feasable option.
The solution, I feel, would be to have iTunes create an "Option" that would allow users like me to make iTunes merge the "Artist" & "Name" fields together. Make it an option so that users who do not see the benefit to this, would not have to use it. By doing this, I could now surf my ENTIRE collection via the "Songs" field in a very logical approach.
For an example, let's take a song: Artist - "Def Leppard" & Song Name - "Pour Some Sugar On Me". By clicking this option, when browsing thru the "Songs" field, it would now display as: Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me. This allows me to browse my ENTIRE library while at the same time, keeping "like" songs together, and making it very easy to distinguish whether or not it is a song I want to select. By knowing that Def Leppard is a Rock Artist, it helps to distinguish the song.
I work for a custom AV integration shop that has put hundreds of music servers into homes. We have been teaching our clients the benefits of this for some time now, with great feedback. The only problem presently, is it requires the users to have to re-edit every single file by putting the Artist's Name & the Song Title into the "Name" field of iTunes. Very time consuming! As well, because you also have the "Artists" name entered in the "Artist" field, you get Front Row displaying the "Artist" name twice, once in the song name, and once in the artist's field.
    Any feedback would be welcomed.
    Regards,
    Trevor

You might be able to get where you want using Chaotic Software's MediaRage. It can automate and batch tag editing, including building a Title tag that combines Artist and Title and, to possibly address you other problem, blanking the Artist tag.
MediaRage is not expensive and it is very powerful, you can even define regexs for how to parse tags.

  • All my song names, artists etc are gone and have been replaced with

I wanted to move my itunes library to external hard drive to make space on my internal hd. Ive been having trouble with backing up and to make a long story short, my music is gone of my hard drive ( internal), im now backing it up from the ipod directly to my external hd, I did it a bit wrong but its getting there anyway. The problem is that now all the song names, artists etc are gone and each one of my 9170 songs are just capital letters, like AURH, so i have no idea what is what. Anyone know what is goin on here and how to fix this?

Yes, the iPad is designed to erase all data, when you connect it to a new computer.  It only syncs the data that is on the computer you connect to, to the device.  If you don't have your epub and pdf documents on the computer, and set to sync via iTunes.......they will erase.
You need to move the data from the other computer, to the mac.  Once they are on the mac, you can connect the iPad, and sync it to the iPad.

  • SBH52 and song names / artists using music unlimited

I'm a subscriber to the Sony Music Unlimited service, but I've noticed that the song name/artist do not appear on the SBH52 when using the Walkman app.  This is also the case when using Google Music.  They appear fine when playing songs locally stored on the player.  But doesn't that defeat the purpose of Music Unlimited?
    I have a Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
Is there any way that future firmware updates can support this? Or is there another setting or utility that can be used?
    Ross.

Oh wow, is this really the case?
I have the sbh52 on pre order, but was hoping the walkman app would be linked to the sony accessories by default.
The walkman app also doesn't work with the smartwatch 2 I have, so likely for the same reason
Who would want to use the poor music unlimited app with these assesories when the walkman app links to them and is much slicker.
Please make the changes Sony, these are the basics ....

  • Changing song names/artist names on ipod

When I initially put all my songs on the ipod some of the song titles and artist names were wrong - i went back into itunes and fixed them all but when it updated the ipod it didn't change any of them on the ipod. Is there something I am not doing?

When you have the ipod plugged in have you tried to click on the names in the ipod folder to where a box comes around each name? Try this and it will let you type in a new name.

  • Un selecting Checks next to song name

I am sorry if this isn't the best description...
Right next to a song name in iTunes is a check box that, I guess, describes the list of songs that will be played. Is there a way that I can unselect or select all from this list if I want to? Right now there are some that are selected and some that aren't. I don't want to go through the hassle of checking all of these if I don't have to.
    Thanks.

Awesome. I thought it was something 'simple.'
Thanks so much for your help.

  • How do I give individual tracks a song name/artist name on a compilation CD?

I have been uploading compilation CDs to my iTunes library onto my MacBook Pro and while I can give the CD an album name, genre, etc., through 'CD Info' while the CD is uploading, I am unable to give each track a song name and artist. When I tried doing this via 'CD info' every track was given the same song name and artist!  It is a CD of various artists/tracks. Any advice welcome.

    Hello TooSweet1,
It sounds like you have imported an audio disk to your iTunes library that is a compilation of various artists but the artist and other info are the same for all tracks and you would like to customize the information on a track by track basis. You can do this with the info window.
Information about each item in your library is stored in the item’s Info window. To open the Info window, select the item and then choose File > Get Info.

  • IPod Voice over says "All Music" not the Song Name & Artist!

Please, someone, anyone provide advice. This was my favorite feature on my
    iPod shuffle - 4GB.
When I hold down on the voiceover button on the headphones...her voice simply says "all songs" rather than the song name and artist? How do I change that back; Is the problem with my playlist?

  • I can no longer change my song names like i used to. i use to be able to right click and go to "get info" and then change the song name, artist and album, now i can't is there any other way to change the songs name and info

When I get songs and put them on my itunes accout on my computer I used to be able to rename them right clicking, going to "get info" and then renaming everything I wanted like song name, album and artwork. I also use to be able to click on the song then click and hold on it and be able to rename it. But all the songs I have gotten after the last update have not been able to be renamed in any of the old ways I use to be able to. Is there any other way to rename songs because I know I can't undo updates and that seems to be whats causing it.
    Thankyou for your time

  • How do I create albums in iTunes, change song names/artist names, etc!!??

Ack! Please help me! I am a total dummy and I have no clue how to use my iPod video 30GB. First, I connected iTunes and all my old songs (previously dl from kazaa and limewire) were transferred over, only since the sharers spelled the artist names differently, I have Led Zeppelin (and every other artist) spelled a million different ways so all of the songs are listed in my library separately.
So, um, I need to know how I can at least manage my albums or whatever so that I can put all songs by one artist in one place and just name it something different, and also, if I do this in iTunes and then hook up my iPod will it automatically update to reflect these new categorizations? Also...if none of that is possible, how do I delete all of the songs from my iPod and iTunes so that I can try to arrange them differently in my music folder so that when they're imported into iTunes they can all be placed together more correctly?
Could it have something to do with the fact that when I installed iTunes I selected the option to "Do it myself" rather than "iTunes do it for you" option when selecting the songs from my music folder? ANY help would be so so so greatly appreciated!!!!!

In iTunes, right click on the song and go click on the selection 'get song info' (Or somthing like that, I`m not 100% sure, but i think it it similiar) and you can change what you want in there.

  • Checkbox next to song name in itunes?

What does the check box mean? I have had an ipod for over 2 years and still do not know. Some of my songs are checked and some are not.
I am embarrassed but don't know what it means!!

Those checked boxes mean a couple of things.
    1. If you sync your iPod manually, only the songs with the checked boxes will transfer to your iPod - everything else that's not checked then it won't.
    2. When you are playing your songs in iTunes, you place a check next to the songs you want to play. Songs that are not checked will not play UNLESS you select them yourself or place a check next to them too.
Those checked boxes are mostly used to select songs, besides highlighting them -- basically.

  • Little boxes next to songs and why won't one single song sync?

Somehow when I was messing with iTunes I unchecked every one of the little boxes somehow and I don't know how to get them all checked again?
also I have one song that won't sync and I'm not sure why, it plays fine on my computer but it won't sync to my iPod?

To get them all checked again, select all tracks in library, right click then select the 'check selection' option from context menu popup.
iTunes can handle some file types and formats the iPod cannot. What type of file is it giving problem?

  • Can iTunes be made to speak the song name, artist, etc.?

I play a lot of classical music on iTunes and was wondering if there was a way to have iTunes speak the name of the work, etc., sort of like a DJ. With the new Nike kit, your iPod can be made to tell you about your workout so I imagine something could be done.
Anyone heard of anything like this?

  • How To Edit Songs Names/Artists On Ur iPhone/iPad/iPod

ive been keeping my iphone library clean throughout the years and recently since ive updated my itunes and purchased the new iphone4s
it hasnt been working, anybody know why?>

You need to copy everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your old comptuer to your new one.
The ipod/iphone/ipad are not storage/backup devices.  They simply mirror the selected content of your computer.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod/iphone/ipad.  The exception is itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You can sync to one computer/library at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current contnet and replace with content from the new computer.

I wonder if we haven't misunderstood what you were asking for. Could it be that you have not a huge file, but just a huge list of names in many small files. If that's the case, you should rather use the following script instead of the previous one.
Since this script does not rename the files, make a backup of your files before running it.
set theFolder to choose folder -- the folder containing your text files
    tell application "Finder"
set theNames to name of files of theFolder whose name extension is "txt"
    end tell
    set theTextFiles to {}
set theFolderPath to POSIX path of theFolder
    repeat with thisName in theNames
copy theFolderPath & thisName to the end of theTextFiles
    end repeat
    repeat with thisFile in theTextFiles
set F1 to open for access thisFile
        set theText to read F1
        close access F1
set theParagraphs to paragraphs of theText
set bigList to (a reference to theParagraphs)
        set theNewParagraphs to {}
set bigNewList to (a reference to theNewParagraphs)
        repeat with X in bigList
            set P to offset of " - " in X
            if P = 0 then
                set Y to X
            else
                set Y to text (P + 3) through -1 of X & " - " & text 1 through (P - 1) of X
            end if
copy Y & return to the end of bigNewList
        end repeat
set theNewText to text 1 through -2 of (bigNewList as text)
set F2 to open for access thisFile with write permission
        set eof F2 to 0
