BPX: a futile idea?

I came across a thread that was not related to points hunting, that made me question whether SDN/SCN is really accepted as place to discuss topics that don't involve how to write ABAP or Java, or install a system.
This thread that I found and the reply at the end made me wonder how seriously the SDN/SCN forums are taken?
Re: using configurable products in IC Web
The comment that got me thinking from the thread was:
[quote]
The Quote is a bit more interesting of a topic, since you could either call the CRM Quote or use the standard Interaction Center sales order options (of which there are a few) such as CRM Sales Order, CRM Sales Ticket, ERP Order, or R/3 order. This is probably more a business decision that should be discussed with your project team and consultants rather than taking the advice of some guy on the Internet
[/quote]
Does this mean that when it comes to the business process discussions that SDN/SCN is really not meant to be a serious forum?
I know the there is some sarcasm in the quote, but seriously what's the point of having BPX type discussions here if questions like this are dismissed as the "wrong place" to ask.  I agree that the final decision should always be with the onsite team, but the whole point of being to collaborate is to share knowledge with other "teams" that don't exist in your physical/geographical boundaries.
I guess is SDN/SCN more than just a bunch of random people answering other random people's questions.
Take care,
Stephen

Rob,
I agree that this probably the case in this situation.  I guess the more general question is that this was posted in the CRM forum and not the ABAP general?  If something is solution specific can you still have "process" discussions vs the discusssions on BAPI names, etc?
If the questions presented are trying to go beyond "point-hunting", "table-listing", "etc." then more these "strategy" questions need to be nutured/discussed out in the forums.  You can't necessarily solve the problem, but the discussion is necessary to figure out the correct direction of the solution.  The question is how do you improve the quality of the conversation, without supporting leeching?
Take care,
Stephen

  • Is a BPX a Process Steward?

My colleague Aiaz Kazi forwarded this to us:
    <a href="http://jkobielus.blogspot.com/">James Kobielus' Blog</a>
The piece Aiaz highlighted, was a discussion he had with the blogger who calls the BPX a Process Steward.  I've quoted it below as it speaks to the role definition "grappling" we are working through here on this forum.
Your comments about this are welcome.
"I had a discussion on this same topic yesterday with Aiaz Kazi of SAP, here at SAPPHIRE ’06 in Orlando. Many of their customers are grappling with the proper definition of the diverse roles in governance of SOA that leverages SAP’s Enterprise Services Architecture (ESA), which is implemented in its NetWeaver platform components, mySAP applications, and diverse composite, vertical, and horizontal apps and business processes.
What Aiaz was describing is a new SOA governance design-time role that sits halfway between the IT process architects and the business process analysts (i.e., the tech and business wonks who use their respective visual development and flowcharting tools to specify SOA-enabled business processes at various levels). This intermediate role essentially catalyzes consensus between the business process analysts and the IT process analysts concerning the eventual process, but doesn’t actually get involved in the fine-grained architecting of the processes.
Instead, this role is more of a “process steward” (my term) who makes sure, whatever new process emerges, that it reuses existing business processes to the maximum extent feasible. The process steward cracks the whip and just says no when IT process architects and business analysts attempt to create new, end-to-end, stovepipe workflows that overlap with existing processes, either in their entirety or in significant roles, routes, and/or rules.
In other words, the process steward role enforces reuse of existing business processes—SOA-style—when developing new processes. The process steward oversees the SOA governance process—the design-time workflow or collaborative process--under which business governance structures—as defined by IT process and business process architects—are crafted, revised, and optimized."

with German (or to be more precise Austrian) as my native langugage I seem to fail to assess the full meaning of the term 'steward' and maybe just because of this feel uncomfortable with it.
To me 'process steward' sounds as it were some subordinate role, something like governanvce accountant, someone counting reuse numbers, annoying both the business analyst and the IT architect.
Nevertheless I like the idea of
<i>This intermediate role essentially catalyzes consensus between the business process analysts and the IT process analysts concerning the eventual process, but doesn’t actually get involved in the fine-grained architecting of the processes.
    </i>.
Therefore I'd coin this role a <b>process mediator</b>, someone who gets IT, business analysts and users together and helps them to reach a common understanding and if necessary mediates with respect to different perceptions, requirements, levels of knowledge and most notably ontologies.
    just my 2 thoughts,
    anton

  • How to be a BPX that is not 'nosy'...

    Hello Folks:
I want to gather everyone's thoughts on the topic of delivering the bpx services 'diplomatically'. What I mean by that is finding a way for an IT person to present a business case in a consultative but non-intrusive way.
A common bottleneck in IT-Busines collaborations, especially those initiated by IT,  is - "Don't teach us how to do business" or "We have been doing this for years".
My experience is that showing the business process owners as-is and to-be models simultaneously helps. Also convincing is a collection of case studies with similar scenarios.
Anybody else with ideas to share?

    Ketan,
Here are some of my thoughts ....
All of us know that most of the ERP's have build the business process based on the best practices around the world in various industries. So, what we see at a specific client place may not the best / efficient practice at all. However, there is a way to communicate the same and at the same time, it also matters who communicates. If the person is two years old in the industry and tries to go to a power user, who has been doing his thing for past 15 years, in more likelihood he and his suggestion will be neglected. However, if you have personal discussion with him and have him propose to the management the idea as if it was his and show the merits of the process change, I am sure he will take it and there by gets the confidence in you. It all boils down to your communication skills in this case.
Coming to your basic question of who should initiate the business process change, would it be the IT guy / buisness guy, I guess that will go hand in hand. For a business process expert that is his core competence, however if you are a IT consultant you would have seen the process being implemented in different ways at different customer places and probably have been able to figure the merits and demerits of process being implemented in a specific manner.
Ultimately, its all about keeping the cost down while making the process more and more efficient.
    My 2 cents ....
    Regards,
    Ravi

  • Quadra 630 IDE drive.

I need a way to retrieve data from a Quadra 630 that stopped working years ago. I got an IDE to USB cable to hook it up and the drive is spinning and will prompt the USB storage device install if I boot into Windows, and will show up on the list of drives in Disk Utility. However, the drive will not initialize I'm guessing because the file system is not recognizable? I'm running OS X 10.6.7 dual-boot with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Any ideas? This is NOT an SCSI drive.

"Perhaps the drive is damaged, which would make this a futile endeavor."
We never give up on a drive until it is has been tried three ways.  Keep in mind that in the really old days you had to manually give the command to rebuild the desktop.  When moving zip disks back and forth from OS 7 to OS 8, 9 or X machines, I cancel the desktop rebuild.  Rewriting the desktop after it has been automatically rebuilt by newer software can lead to confusion.  The wider the jump in systems, the greater chance of trouble.
The safest method of file transfer is from original hardware to a newer external storage device.  Then to an original beige G3 running a newer OS.  Then out to a USB device, then to any new machine that is USB capable from the factory.  Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a truely beige G3.  All cases after the introduction of the SE were platinum, Apples new beige until the iMac with its fruit basket of colors.
So, from an Apple IIe to a IIc unidisk to a Quadra 700 to an external SCSI zip drive to a G3 to a zip drive in a Blue and White G3 with USB on board or an external USB zip to a current machine.  That is thirty years of file transfer capability.  Just a few steps inbetween.  Each generation had its comfort zone for seamless file transfers.
If newer operating systems saw older drives and data storage in a truly transparent state, the rebuild desktop message would never come up.

  • How do you ensure people can not copy your materials and steal your ideas.

We have a number of training manuals and we just print them for our participants.  A number of participants every year ask for e-copies. Its a great idea but how do I ensure they can not copy the materials and re-purpose it for their own use. In worse case scenerio they could copy huge chunks of the manuals and become competitors.
The searchable feature is one reason sited by clients for e-copies.  This kind of shuts down the scan -OCR approach. To make it searchable would be a sizable task.
    Some approach to limit easy copying;
    bi-column writing columns
    Waterwarks
encrypted passwords - however this still may allow it to be passed around to wider audiences.
I feel like I'm asking futile question in the modern e-era, how do i lock down my materials allow for ease of use and distribution and yet ensure our IP is not distributed beyond the intended audience.

Staying on paper provides only the perception of "protection".
It is trivial to prep a hardcopy source, scan the paper, OCR and have it all in PDF.
While Acrobat's OCR will do an adequate job one can step up to something more robust if desired.
Once PDFs with OCR output are in hand it is, again, trivial to export the textual content.
Going to TXT, RTF, DOC or DOCX  lets one clean up, edit, etc.
Go digital. Apply appropriate copyright information to metadata and elsewhere.
Monitor your field of endeavor. At the end of the day it really is a limit field of play with limited players in a very big world.
Should you come across the baddies have the lawyers tree 'em eh.
If you've a end-user friendly, usable product you will get more "end-users".
    Be well...

  • Silly idea...but why not remove the points system?

    Hi,
I just re-activated my interest in the SAP SDN community and have noticed a lot of discussions around points, Jacobs deals, negative points, quality of content, moderators, etc. Basically a whole lot of discussion, energy and effort towards something that should be a byproduct of an active community, not the core of it.
How about just removing the whole points system?
I can understand why it was initially in place to quickly build up a community, but I assume that you have reached the critical mass and I think you might actually be losing some of the good part of the mass because of this points system (because it might impact the overall quality).
I have been a member of Sun's Java community since 97 and though they have always had "duke dollars" it has never been a motivating factor to participate there and I don't think a lot of emphasis is put on them either. The community became very fast self controlling with people put in place for not being clear with their questions, etc. and I have always thought that it has been quite a good, simple community which has benefited everyone quite a bit. This is not to say that I don't appreciate SAP SDN, but it is just a sample of a community which works without requiring direct "rewards".
Having a link to your business card for answering questions as well as getting a profile with articles, whitepapers, etc. is in my opinion plenty of recognition and for those who you (as the forum owners & moderators) see as being truly exceptional you have the Mentor / Expert (sorry, can't remember what you called them but a sort of fellowship) model and the less people you have in that group the more they will be valued and the more people are interested in truly good quality content instead of quantity.
The only post I found related to this topic with a quick search was Reg Award Points but there might be more around as well. My apologies if this is a topic which has been discussed enough already (please link this to such discussions if relevant, though won't reward any points ).
So how about it. Any chance of dropping the points and trust that the community will survive without them? I think it would do just fine.
    Cheers
    Kalle

"have the changes improved the quality of the postings?".  I would leave that judgment for the community to answer and perhaps it is still too soon to tell as the changes have only recently been implemented. In most change management activities, it takes time to affect behavioral change.
But as for the World Food Program initiative, you raise a very important point about continuing to spread the word concerning the food for points idea.   I would recommend taking a look at this website called [SAP Feeding Knowledge|http://www.sapfeedingknowledge.com/] and would be bold enough (or perhaps impassioned enough) to recommend that if this idea speaks to you, if you think it important enough to repeat to others, you take the initiative and further spread the word.  That can be done by reminding folks in the forums (perhaps even where such contentious point discussions or debates around quality occur) or it could be that you choose to blog about it either here on SDN/BPX or in a personal blog space.  I'm your willing assistant in that activity!
Viral knowledge-spreading about this, increases the likelihood of the program's success.  And forgive me if I sound like I am evangelizing the cause, but that is exactly what I am dedicated and determined to do.  Having recently visited in countries where this program is designed to help people, I can vouch for its importance as an eye witness to its success and would think it worth everyone's time to at least read about how a simple act of participation here can help alleviate suffering and make a difference in the world.   Please pass it on.

  • Any ideas for a status or "at a glance" splash screen / presentation?

This is an idea I've been tossing around and wanted to know if there was something easy out there that would accomplish this...
I'd like to mount a monitor in one of our common areas for the management team and have it display current statuses of some of our IT features/services and maybe quick bits on what we are currently working on, major issues, etc...
I've seen some company lobbies with similar setups that display company-wide information, weather, etc.. so I know the capability is out there but I don't know squat regarding what that would entail. The easier, the better, naturally... as I don't want this to turn into an entire job position updating it, haha. But something that I could hopefully remotely update would be nice.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?

So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is.  Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes.  Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.

Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.
    Here's the issue report:

  • First release of new DPL Assistant, an IDE plug-in

We are pleased to announce the first version of a new component. "DPL
Assistant" is an IDE plug-in that is intended to help developers use,
and learn to use, the Direct Persistence Layer of Oracle Berkeley DB
Java Edition. The DPL Assistant is initially provided as an Eclipse
    plug-in.
This first version of the plug-in performs validation of DPL
annotations in Java source code. Each time you save changes from the
Java source code editor, the validator analyzes annotations (@Entity,
@Persistent, etc.) and reports any errors or warnings that it can
detect, in a similar way to how the IDE reports Java compilation
    errors.
Of course there are many more things that the DPL Assistant could do.
We are requesting your feedback. Please see the Possible Future
Enhancements section at the end of this message and send us your
thoughts by replying to this forum thread.
    Installation
You can install the DPL Assistant using the Eclipse update manager.
Start by adding our update site to your configuration:
http://download.oracle.com/berkeley-db/eclipse/The DPL Assistant was developed on Eclipse version 3.3, and has been
tested with both 3.3 and 3.4. It of course requires at least Java 1.5
(since it works with Java annotations).
    Usage
Once installed, the DPL Assistant may be enabled on a per-Java-project
basis. From the Project Explorer, right-click on the name of a Java
project, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. In the
Properties dialog, choose the "DPL Assistant" page, and turn on the
    "Use DPL Assistant" check-box.
Now you can create a Java source file and type in some Java code,
using DPL annotations. Whenever you save your changes in the Java
source code editor, the validation tool checks the code, and adds
error/warning markers for any problems that it finds.
If you have your Eclipse workspace set up to build automatically, you
only need to save your changes. (See the Project -> Build
Automatically menu item.) Otherwise you need to do an explicit Build
    to run the validator.
When the tool reports a problem, you should be able to see a marker in
the margin on the left-hand side of the editor, and if you show the
Eclipse "Problems" view you should see it there too. Also, a few --
but not all -- of the problem types also appear as squiggly underlines
    in the source code.
As a simple example, if you were to type in (and Save) the following
    code:
        @Entity public class A {
            String foo;
}you should see an error marker, complaining that "Entity class lacks a
    primary key".
    Known Issues
There is one significant known issue: if you have multiple Java
projects in your Eclipse workspace, with entity or persistent classes
from one project referring to classes in another project, then
sometimes DPL Assistant can get confused. In such a case, it may fail
to notice changes in one project that ought to cause a refresh of the
validation for classes in another project, resulting in the retention
of stale results from a previous validation.
If this happens, a simple workaround is to manually request a clean
build of the Java project (from the menu bar: Project -> Clean ...).
    Possible Future Enhancements
At this point these are only some ideas, and do not represent any sort
of commitment or definite plan. We would especially like to get
opinions and feedback from the community. What features do you think
    would be useful?
    * the DPL Assistant is initially provided as an Eclipse plug-in, but
we could add support for other IDE's, such as NetBeans or
JDeveloper. Again, this depends on the level of interest from the
community. Please let us know what would be useful to you.
    * instead of merely complaining about errors, in many cases it could
fix the code automatically. Sometimes there are several possible
fixes, depending on the developer's intent. These could be
presented to the user in a multiple-choice pop-up menu.
    * "content assist": instead of waiting until an error has been made,
it is sometimes possible to help the user get it right the first
time. In the same way that the IDE helps in writing Java
expressions (e.g., presenting a multiple-choice list of known
methods, given an object reference of a known class), it could
present a list of valid completions during typing of annotations.
    * wizards: instead of having to type entity classes by hand, a wizard
could lead you through the process of defining the desired fields,
and then generate the basic Java source code automatically.
By analyzing an application's overall schema, a wizard might also
help generate code for a test harness. Or, by comparing the current
schema to a previous schema extracted from an old database
environment, it might help generate conversion code ("mutations").
    * ultimately, it would be sweet to be able to render an abstract
graphical "picture" (like a UML diagram) from an existing schema,
and even (conversely) to support interactive drawing of such a
diagram from which entity and persistent classes could then be
    generated automatically.

Thanks for your account and experience with the new iWeb.
Nice site now, although vegetarians better skip it
I personally got rather hungry viewing it. And it is only 13.30 here.

  • My macbook pro no longer connects to my TV with the mini dvi to hdmi adapter. It was working fine now I cant get it to output to the Tv. Any ideas?

My Macbook pro no longer outputs to my vizio led tv. It was working fine now I cant get any picture. It just says no signal. It is not the hdmi or the adapter because it works fine with my other tv. Any ideas on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. Please be as specific as possible. Thanks. BTW--I am using the mini dvi to hdmi adapter in case that was unclear.

Since you say that the same connectors work on your other TV is suggests that the fault is not in the connectors but your Vizio TV.  I would check the settings on the Vizio TV.  Verify that is is set to receive HDMI input.  Perhaps you or some one else has inadvertently changed them.  Pressing the wrong buttons on a remote control device can do that.  (I am assuming no changes were made in SYSTEM PREFERENCES>DISPLAYS)
    Ciao.

  • Please see my problem and give me idea
