Brain-Dead iPod shuffle!

I'm on my dad's PC right now, and there is something wrong with his iPs. When I plug it in, it just mounts in My Computer as F:, and it was NOT set up to enable disk use. So I opened iTunes, and it comes up saying: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." so, I did that, rebooted, and his iPod still won't work. So, I tried to go to the iPod Updater, but it just said "iPod service error." I clicked OK, and the updater closed. I don't know what to do, please help!

first check to see if you've got a fast user switching issue:

... but if that isn't it, try:
(1) do a
b repair install
(it tends to fix precisely this problem). Go to your add/remove programs, select itunes, click "change/remove",
b but
this time select "repair".
... and if that does work:
(2) try this tip:

Hi have you tried the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility? Here is the link to the application.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/ipodshuffleresetutility1 01forwindows.html
It may help fix your dead iPod however you may need to run the application a few times for it to work.
    Hope this finds you well.

  • Brain Dead iPod

I have a problem similar to Steve's. Mine is easily recreatable. When listening to an audiobook (.m4b) file. Hit pause, then menu to top menu, and select SLEEP. Ipod turns off, and will not restart unless the hold / select / menu procedure is used. Happens every time. If I go and listen to and MP3 file, and then sleep, it seems to work normally. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I try to shutdown by listening to a song, but sometimes I set pause on an audiobook, and it times itself out to sleep... unfortunately it's brain dead after that.

  • A Dead iPod Shuffle

Hey, I have had my iPod Shuffel for about a year now with no hitch. I use it every day for eight hours. (I wear it at work) I get home and plug it in to my comp when I go to bed so its charged for the morning. Last night I did the usual. But when I got to work today and turned it on, I got nothing.
When I plug it in to my comp, iTunes picks it up as per usual. It even has the solid orange light to say its charging. And after a couple of hours its green. Now I unplug it and nothing. No lights nothing. I have done the five R's, and even restored it using different versions. Still to no avail. Any one have any pointers? or ideas to get me going? Its a long day at work with no tunes =( .

    Try reading link first:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    However:
The battery may be defective, especially after a year’s time of steady use.
If the light stays green only for a brief period after a full charge; it's more than likely the battery is bad…!

  • My ipod Shuffle is Dead?

I have a Ipod Shuffle since November 25, it worked very well until yesterday, i dont know what happenned, but it wont turn on, and my computer wont recognise it, only sometimes after plugging it several times it starts charging, but it gets very hot (i dont remember it getting that hot before) if i take it off to listen music it wont turn on again, i already left it a lot of time charging and when i try to turn it on it wont work.
So do you think my ipod is dead and i should go to get a new one? or what should i do?, (i already made the 5Rs and nothing works)

Return it to Apple as it sounds faulty.
It is under warranty and they should replace it.

  • TS3572 My 4th gen ipod shuffle is either not working or dead...

My 4th gen ipod shuffle is either not working or dead, i have opened it and found that its black near audio pin is injected and its heating while connecting via usb to laptop neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed help any one...............................
i think its kind of short circuited is any thing workable in this device or not........

I solved my problem by restoring the shuffle to factory settings on the summary screen. Now it seems to work the way it's supposed to. Many thanks to Apple for zero help, as usual. Apple should direct less resources to developing the next snazzy ipad and more to cleaning up and enhancing itunes. I'll make the same editorial comment about the iphone 4 voicemail options.

my ipod shuffle wont charge the orange light just
    blinked (front light)
    when plugged in, for hours
While the orange light blinks it'll NEVER turn
green UNLESS whatever is causing the light to blink
(access by iTunes, used as data storage drive, ...)
stops. IF you EJECT or UNmount or "safely remove
hardware", it might display a solid orange...
i upgraded the software and reset the ipod

NO light? That means it's not receiving power from
    the USB port.
it is 2 years old, is the shuffle battery dead ?
It may very be. What happens when you press the
battery status button on the back? Does the LED show
    anything?
it still shows up in itunes and transfers music
    etc.
Yeah, but what good is it if it won't play when
    disconnected?
first thing this morning (after a overnight rest)
    i got a red light
when i press the back light now
    i get nothing,

  • HT1373 I originally used iTunes and loaded my personal music to it when I got an iPod Shuffle long ago.  I have now migrated from Windows environments to a MacBook Pro.  My old iTunes account is associated with a dead email address at HP. How do I move it

I am trying to get an old iTunes account reactivated for my new MacBook Pro.  Originally I had iTunes for my iPod Shuffle and connected to it with a Windows laptop.  I have dumped Windows in favor of Mac OS and now have a MacBook Pro with iTunes installed.  I want to get at the 100s of songs I had out on iTunes but my email address for the old account is no longer active (was a work account and I have since retired).  How do I get a new email address (and ID) assigned into my old account so I can access it and get at my music?

Unfortunatly, you can't. I had the problem with an iPod classic and looked into it. You could make a new apple account and transfer it to that, but thats it and even that isn't garenteed to work.

  • Help me - iPod Shuffle 4th gen is probably dead - red light for 5 seconds

    Hello,
sorry for my bad english. I hope you can help me.
I have iPod Shuffle 4th gen. I have it for one year. When I today tried to charge it, after connected to my PC (in the right USB port) I heard sound of connecting device but in Windows in My Computer nothing happened. On the iPod the diode emitted the red light for 5 seconds and then turned off. I have iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod too.
Does anybody know what is wrong?
    Thanks

    Hey StatistaXS,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like your iPod shuffle may have had a very low charge when connecting to your computer:

  • Zombie iPod Shuffle

Right. I got a new iPod shuffle from Apple and plugged it into my computer. Worked fine for a bit. I then plugged it in to update some new songs and nothing happened. I tried to eject it, and it took ages to do so. When i did a message came up saying 'Write Delay Failed- Windows has been unable to save files on F: (My iPod). All files have been lost' I was stunned. I tried again to plug it in, but it only appeared as 'F:' instead of 'Kateus' iPod' I tried it at school, where it displayed 'F: DRIVE IS CORRUPTED'. My head almost exploded. Tried it at my boyfriends, who plugged it in and NOTHING HAPPENED. AT ALL.
This was about 5 months ago. I'm now so so so far out of warranty.
I plugged it in today and it appeared on My Computer, but not on iTunes. In My Computer is appeared as F: and then randomly said 'Please insert a disk into drive F:'
Weird thing is there are a few songs on my iPod still, and some blank as well. If you skip past the songs, you will get lost in the sea of blank songs that never die. I'm worried cause my Dad will be really really REALLY annoyed that Mum bought be a $150 piece of junk and I spent so long on the phone to Apple getting it replaced and now it just randomly dies. If there are no solutions, I'm going to get a PSP. But any help would be MUCH appriciated.
PS I called it Zombie iPod becuase it seems to have come back from the dead, although it has no brain...
    iPod Shuffle Windows XP

Help? I have tried resetting but it doesn't work. Sorry for the typing error above.
I have tried resetting the iPod shuffle 4th generation by switching it off for ten second and turn it back on. It doesn't work.

  • New 3rd Gen. 4 GB iPod Shuffle not being recognized by computer or iTunes

Hey everyone, I've read some of the other posts here on this thread about other people having problem getting their computer to recognize the new 4 GB iPod Shuffle when plugged into the USB drive, and it seems like I am having a very similar issue. I just received my iPod in the mail a few days ago and tried plugging it into the USB and got NO response whatsoever from my computer or iTunes. I am operating with Windows XP (Service Pack 3) on a Dell Inspiron Intel processor, 2 GHz with 3 GB RAM, with iTunes 8.1 (just updated). When I put something in my USB usually I hear a noise (sounds like DO-do ha) which tells me that my laptop recognizes whatever is plugged in, and usually I get a little box in the bottom right hand part of the screen that says it's been plugged in. I didn't get any of this when I plugged it in.
When I first opened the box I turned the shuffle on and the light went green for 1 second, orange for 1 second, red for one second, then dead..I suppose this is expected since I figured it's new and needs to be charged, so I turned the shuffle off, plugged the USB into the earphone socket then into my USB, and then turned the shuffle on, and got nothing but the same sequence of lights. It's one thing if iTunes just didn't recognize the shuffle, but I checked the Device Manager and My Computer and the USB drive wasn't even listing the shuffle as being plugged in..maybe the USB cable that came with it is faulty?? I read all of the technical troubleshooting notes on here and tried the 5 R's and nothing is working at all..
I do have one guess about this though..I also have an 80 GB iPod 5th generation that I've used for over a year now for my car and that plugs into the USB fine with its respective cable and is recognized by iTunes..my question is, can my iTunes only recognize one iPod at a time? Does it reject the shuffle because iTunes is only allowed to sync to one iPod per account? If this is true, is there a way around this so it can sync both, or can I have two iTunes accounts on the same computer? But why does the computer not even recognized it when plugged in? Hopefully it is just the cable that is damaged and not the device..wow this was long, but any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

    According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
iTunes for Windows does not support having multiple iPods *connected simultaneously.*

  • Connection problem with iPod Shuffle 4th Gen.

Hello, I have problem with my iPod Shuffle 4th gen. One day i tried as always to turn it on and listen music but i heard only short "info" sound and saw short green diode impulse and nothing else. My computer (windows 7) also can't find it, after plugging it on, ipod's red diode turns on for 5 sec. Any suggestions?

I've put my shuffle in a warm, dry place and we will see what happens in a few days. Any other ideas to fix this problem and/or prevent it from happening again?
Yes ... pay attention to how and where you clip the shuffle. Moisture can enter the controls if in contact with damp surface, OR can enter through the earphone jack along the earphone wire... positioning the shuffle such that the earphone socket is down will prevent the latter.
I recently discovered that the mode switch on my shuffle is very sensitive and will change from play-in-order to shuffle with a tiny positional movement. Interestingly, that resulted in behavior that, on the surface looked like the shuffle just quit! I normally listen to to audiobooks and other spoken material which are set to NOT be shffled... however , I forgot to set ONE 1/2 hour radio show to not shuffle. When I accidentally nudged the mode switch, the shuffle switched to playing that show. Trying to get bact to the audiobook I had been playing by multiple << presses confused the issue totally since the shuffle now displayed absolutely no indication of the button presses...it behaved as if it were dead! Turning it off and on didn't help either. Since it was dark, I couldn't see that the mode switch was slightly out of its normal play-in-order position, either. I put the shuffle away and soldiered on listening to a different audiobook on my nano.
