Brain Dead iPod

I have a problem similar to Steve's. Mine is easily recreatable. When listening to an audiobook (.m4b) file. Hit pause, then menu to top menu, and select SLEEP. Ipod turns off, and will not restart unless the hold / select / menu procedure is used. Happens every time. If I go and listen to and MP3 file, and then sleep, it seems to work normally. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
I try to shutdown by listening to a song, but sometimes I set pause on an audiobook, and it times itself out to sleep... unfortunately it's brain dead after that.

  • Brain-Dead iPod shuffle!

I'm on my dad's PC right now, and there is something wrong with his iPs. When I plug it in, it just mounts in My Computer as F:, and it was NOT set up to enable disk use. So I opened iTunes, and it comes up saying: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." so, I did that, rebooted, and his iPod still won't work. So, I tried to go to the iPod Updater, but it just said "iPod service error." I clicked OK, and the updater closed. I don't know what to do, please help!

  • Is there a way to transfer music from a dead Ipod to a new one?

My Ipod won't charge and I have another one to use for music and idk how t put music on there from my dead ipod I don't have my music on my computer cuz I got detleed

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If the computer does not see the iPod there is no way to get info off the iPod except a Data Recovery Company might be able to do it.

  • How can I see the last location of a now dead ipod touch 4G that had find my iphone turned on?

How can I see the last location of a now dead ipod touch 4G that had find my iphone turned on? I can see my macbook but I cant see the last location of my ipod touch. I lost it a few weeks ago and figured it would show up. But it has not and I need it again for my job. Please help.

There is nothing you can do now. There are apps available from the app store that would give you that information if installed before it was lost/stolen.

  • Dead iPod touch during 3.0 update process

Cross-posted to "iPod Touch" forum... But because another person had a similar problem with Vista as well, am posting here too in case someone can help...
...Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...
I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.
This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"
iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,
    1) Has anyone experienced this?
    2) Has anyone SOLVED it?
Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.
I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.
    Cheers!

  • WRT54G goes brain dead

First of all, the problem I am seeing occurs on an older version of firmware (not sure which one) and the latest (1.02).  Also, I tried this on another WRT54G, with the same result.  2 different routers, and 2 different firmwares.
My ISP (a wireless network, but the output of the modem is a standard Ethernet cable which plugs into the WAN port of the router), seems to reset their tower overnight most nights.  Bottom line is my ISP connection is down for some time (minutes probably).  The WRT54G goes belly up aftwards.  It "thinks" it's connected (the lights all flash correctly, and the status tab in the admin console says it's connected), but there is no access:  no browser, no VOIP, no pinging.  I can reset the router by pulling the plug or doing a disconnect/connect sequence on the status tab, and all is well again.  I have verified this belly-up condition manually:  I can disconnect the WAN ethernet connection for a few minutes, and then connect it back, and the WRT54G has gone brain dead:  no connection.
I have configured the WRT54G manually, and using their installation wizard.  Like I said, 2 different routers, 2 different firmwares (including the latest one).
I borrowed a Motorola WR850G.  Guess what?  It works!  If you disconnect the WAN and reconnect, it just starts working again, no reboot necessary.  So, what is going on with the WRT54G?  Surely this is such a basic issue (recovering from WAN-side lost connectivity), that I can hardly believe this product can't protect itself from this issue.  Help!

You may want to check for PPOe and also make sure that your router is configured with the correct TZ and DST settings. Some ISPs use domain controllers that are very time sensitive. And since DST has changed, you may be running into this problem with your linksys devices.
    Good luck.

  • I need to add my new ipod to itunes. it will only show the old dead ipod. i want to keep the music, but get rid of the info of the old dead ipod and add my new one and its info. please help.

    Hello,
I need to add my new ipod to itunes.
itunes will only show the old, dead ipod that my niece had given me secondhand.
I just got a new one and want to put in it's serial number, etc. but keep the music.
Please help, I've been going around in circles online for hours. I don't want to merely change the name of the old ipod, which is the only info I can find.
    Thanks.

"In addition, I would like to get all of the music files that are already on my ipod on to my new computer"
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod to iTunes.
Once the music from your iPod is in your new iTunes library, you can go about adding new music as you did previously.

  • "Dead iPod" icon on screen -- help!

Hi. I have a fifth generation iPod that went dead on me today. Is my music and iPod lost?
The iPod froze mid-play so I reset it. I had to repeat this a few times (froze, reset). Then it turned on and I could hear and feel the iPod gears turning and clicking in a way that I've never heard or felt before. Almost like something was loose. Then I got the dreaded "Dead iPod" icon (ipod with two x eyes and a frowning face) with an exclamation point and the apple.com support address. It won't take me to the main menu. Oh no!
Then I remembered that today my iPod got stuck to a magnet that is on the clasp of my bag. I don't know how long it was there for, but it's never been stuck to that before. Maybe that is what did it.
Can someone help me understand and fix this? Please?
    1. What should I do? Should I try plugging it into a computer to restore it?
    2. Is my music lost? Is there a backdoor way to pull the files off of my iPod?
    3. Is there any hope at all for my iPod or should I just toss in the towel.
    Thanks in advance!!

The magnet might have destroyed the iPod's hard drive if the drive was spinning and the magnet caused the read/write head(s) of the drive to crash into the platter(s).
An example of what I mean...

  • Dead ipod shuffle first generation

Hi everyone! First time here. Lots of great information, but I can't find my answer. Mine works fine until I plug it into the USB and then there is absolutely nothing. No lights, no nothing. Anybody had this happen before? Please help! I love my music!

Hi have you tried the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility? Here is the link to the application.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/ipodshuffleresetutility1 01forwindows.html
It may help fix your dead iPod however you may need to run the application a few times for it to work.
    Hope this finds you well.

  • I fixed my dead :( iPod

Hi, I thought I'd share this one with those who've had the dreaded " iPod go to support" picture come up on their iPods.
Some 18 months ago my 2nd gen monchrome 40 Gig Click Wheel iPod got corrupted when connected to someone else's computer. I followed all the descriptions on the Apple site to no avail. Every now & then I tried it again, but still dead. This is what I did to get it back to life.
    1) Pressed the centre button with the menu button. Waited for the Apple symbol then put the iPod to my ear. As I listened to the hard drive it sounded as if it was "stuck" in trying to get started much like I compared to a record player stuck in the groove.
I'd listened to this b4 but this time decided to physically give the iPod a shock by dropping it (upright) onto the base of my hand in order to jog the hard drive playing head.
    2) I then quickly pressed the centre button & fast forward. That's when it sprang to life & gave me the language screen
    3) It then asked me to refresh it via iTunes. It came up as "brand new" status. I re-installed the firmware to 3.1.1
    4) Finally charged it the iPod via a mains adapter I have.
2 days later it's still working perfectly. I really believe the jogging was the turning point, & hope my story will be of help to those with the same problem.

Ok I don't recommend that anyone try this, but it worked for me. I have had a dead ipod with all the same symptotes as the above and I tried a small tap on my hand that did not do it but then I tapped it on a harder surface, my chair. And it sprang to life. I figured it could do no more harm. But like I said I could have wound up buying a new on at around $200-$300, SO DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!

  • Ilife install is brain dead

I imported an Iphoto library from someone who had a more recent version of iphoto that I had. I got an error saying I needed to install the newer iphoto. No problem I've been thinking about upgrading anyway. I install ilife 2008 which runs fine. I notice it is installing itunes even though I already have 8.02 installed. When I start itunes it says it is corrupted an I need to re-install from scratch. I download itunes and reinstall. This works and there is no music loss. Here is the question.
Why can't the ilife install use common sense when installing and at least ask if you intend to load an older version. It should give you the option of leaving it alone. Today's option of corrupting the existing 8.02 version is brain dead.

I just went through the same exact thing!! It was pretty frustrating!

  • Retrieving notes from dead iPod

Hi everyone, I have a first generation ipod that is dead, will not turn on, not sure if it is the battery or something else. Is there someway that I could get the notes (350) off of it? If I take the hard drive out and swap it into a working ipod, will that do the trick? I'm thinking of going this route rather than trying to get the dead ipod repaired because the home key is also not working, and for some reason you have to be right by the router for it to pick up the wi-fi. I had not synced the ipod with my laptop in a long time, so there is no backup of the notes.

I had written many notes right before the ipod died and had not synced the ipod with my laptop in such a long time that if there is a backup of the notes, there would only be like 20 of the 350 notes. If I swap the logic board with the built in solid state memory chip into a working ipod touch and all goes well, then all my notes, Safari bookmarks, contacts & apps would be there?

  • 2nd dead iPod Touch 4G in 2 months?  Battery/charging problems!

    Hi everyone,
It seems as of tonight that I will have to return my second iPod Touch 4G in the last two months. In both cases, it was an issue where the device would no longer charge, and became very hot on the top of the back panel when the device was turned on even for a few seconds (while not being plugged in). In the first case, the device seemed to be defective from the time I opened the box, which was confirmed at an Apple Store, but they asked me to ship it to Apple Repair to be checked out. Apple took a very long time to get a replacement to me, but was good about that problem, and I was happy with the replacement for the past month when all of a sudden tonight the new one would not change and became very hot.
Is this an issue that anyone else has seen? I essentially only charged it off of my laptop or a wall charger unit, but it seems like the battery essentially is shorting out. I love this device, but actually need to use a PDA-type device enough that I am questioning whether I should get a replacement or go back to my old Palm TX.
Thanks for any thoughts/feedback on my iPod Touch 4G battery/charging problems.

Most battery complaints complain about loss of charge. The iPod is designed to lose heat through the back as the battery discharges. This is most common when using the device a lot - like playing games. If yours will no loner charge, by all means return it to Apple.
As far as being a PDA goes, it is as good as any smart phone out there. The PDA, as you once knew it, is dead and has been for 5+ years. Take your iPod to an Apple store and insist on a replacement.
