Branch Cache Deployment

Hi Techies,
I need to deploy a Branch Cache Solution for one of the client’s remote office. Users in the remote office need to access 3 files shares from two
different locations (parent or main office). Below are the complete setup details:-
1. Branch Office:-
a) Number of Users: 50
b) Local Servers: Yes (Domain Controller and File Server)
c) Client Operating System:
Windows 7 Enterprise
d) Local File Server O.S (For Branch Cache):
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64
e) Clustered: NO
2. Main Office 1:-
a) File Server O.S
(For Content server):
Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64
b) Clustered: NO
3. Main Office 2:
a) File Server O.S (For Content Server):-
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64
b) Clustered: YES
4.
Network Bandwidth: The branch office is connected to the main offices through
4 MBPS MPLS cloud link.
Based on the above environment, I need to deploy a Branch Cache solution and have few questions below:-
1. Can I have partner servers with different Operating systems (Server on remote site is 2012 R2 and Content Servers on Main offices are 2008 R2 both Standard and Enterprise respectively)
2. Is Branch Cache service Cluster aware as one of the above main office server is clustered for File services.
3. I know the recommendation for 50 clients is distributed cache model, but I do have a local File server in remote location. providing this which one is the best solution and effective one?
Regards,
Imran Khan

Hi Imran,
A1. It is recommended to use Windows Server 2012 as a host server for new features, it is still supported to use a Windows Server 2008 R2 as a host server. Here is a deployment guide for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.
BranchCache Deployment Guide for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=19558
A2. BranchCache is Cluster awared. Please see "Additional steps for server clusters" in following article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637785(v=ws.10).aspx
A3: From the following FAQ, it is recommended to use Hosted Cache mode if you have a file server in branch office. See:

  • SCCM 2012 R2 Branch Cache - Distributed Cache mode

       Hello to all, I understood the process to enabled Branch Cache - Distributed Cache mode in source server and how to enable clients to use it. Fine. I saw a text that states "
    BranchCache management is integrated in the Configuration Manager console. For applications, you can configure BranchCache on a deployment type. For programs and software updates, you can configure the BranchCache settings on the deployment.
      Does it mean that I also need to configure Branch Chache individually for applications, programs and updates so they can take advantage of it? If positive, how to do this "specific" configuration?
       Regards, EEOC.

    The BranchCache option is checked by default, so you would only need to disable it for any deployments where you didn't want this functionality.
    You can't enable BranchCache for Task Sequences though - but we have a script for that :-)

    Hi,
    Did you check the documentation about how to integrate Coherence with Spring applications? Check it out: Integrating Spring with Coherence
    It seems that you are experiencing a communication problem between your web container and the Coherence cluster. Check if you are able to access simple caches and execute sample put() and get()s. Maybe the problem is not about Spring itself, it could be a communication problem.
    Cheers,

  • Best Practice for Roaming Profiles over Branch Offices

    Hello Everybody,
    I was hoping I could gain advice from experienced engineers on an issue me and my team are currently experiencing.
    The issue:
    We have a client that has their main office in London and this company has other remote offices over the world, Paris, Milan, Luxembourg etc.. Each remote office has a local DC&file server installed as two separate servers or both roles on the same
    server. Everything is central to London, all the main file shares that the company uses is based in London and the terminal server's are based in London too.
    We have DFS-R & N set up on the London File servers to replicate the dfs shares over the remote offices which works fine and we don't generally ever have any issues with this and works well when user's in remote offices access file shares from
    London.
    However and I didn't set this up but this client also has DFS-R & N set up for roaming profiles!!! The issue we are having here is only with the terminal servers. For example I will log in as one of the users from London on the terminal server and will
    load the profile fine, I will log that user off and log in as the admin and remove the profile through advanced system settings. I will then log back on as that same user and will be given a temporary profile, I repeat the first step and the profile loads
    fine, so every other log on will load the user with a temporary profile. I know this is the case because for that user, if I change the profile path in AD from
    \\xxxx.com\public to
    \\lon-fs3v\profiles$\user it then loads every time with no issues. Before anyone asks I have rebuilt the terminal server(s) to rule out if they were misconfigured. You may ask why not do that for everyone? We can't do that for people based in Milan otherwise
    their profile will forever take time to load and that's where the dfs replication comes into play for the profiles.
    Unfortunately they are a very stubborn client so some users (important people) have very large profiles which sometimes takes a while to load up.
    I have done some reading already on the web and have seen the unsupported scenario from Microsoft regarding this (
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2533009 )  so unsure the best way to do it. The link I've put in does say you can have issues with the profiles loading (which we do) if there are too many
    connections which we have 10 to replicate profiles around the remote offices.
    I have done some reading into the hostedbranch cache method but not sure if you can do this with roaming profiles or not?
    We generally want to eliminate the issue for users when logging on remotely with getting a temp profile every other log on attempt. I must add though this issue never occurs on the workstations just the terminal server, our client is in the private equity
    market so one user may just spend one day in a remote office and then come back to London to carry on as they normally would.
    So that's the background to the issue and I was generally trying to work out what methods or if this is possible with the branch cached method for roaming profiles ?
    Thank you to anyone who replies.
    Best,
    Liam

    Hi UC3ngineer,
    Agree with Luca.
    If the branch users need to do lot of conferencing, the best practice is to deploy an new Front End Pool and an Edge Server in Branch Office; Otherwise you must have a 100%
    reliable WAN connection to your central site.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • Window 7 OS deployment

    I would like to deploy window 7 OS via SCCM (OSD) to remote site. I have primary site (around 200 PC) and more of remote site (20 sites which only have 5 - 6 PC) which using 2M WAN link to connect primary site. What is best solution to deploy window 7
    under this environment. Pls advice.

    Hi Sam,
    The use of a prestaged or stand alone media can be acceptable, and can get the job done. Your business may only require to rebuild the hardware every few years or you can build systems centrally and ship them out. The use of the media is more of a short
    term solution and get you over the line for the task ahead. There is administrative overhead in terms of mainintaing the media , any changes to your OSD deployment will not be reflected unless you re create the media.
    For the long term perspective, and ease of use.. I would pilot and implement the branchcache feature, With a bit of reaading and planning, you will get it right, it will be a rewarding experience for you and your team.
    Specifically Distributed Cache mode, as it does not require servers at the remote sites. I advise you to review the article

  • WSUS + BITS Versions + Peer Caching + BranchCache + Windows Editions = HEADACHE!

    We have a WSUS server in the main office (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard).
    We have a branch office with Windows 7 Professional clients and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and Enterprise servers, which means these computers are using BITS 4.0 (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb968799(VS.85).aspx).
    To save on disk space, we prefer not to set up a WSUS downstream replica server in the branch office if we can use BITS 4.0 with BranchCache.
    Researching WSUS and BITS Versions and Peer Caching and BranchCache and Windows Editions has been confusing. Some questions…
    These pages in the BITS section of MSDN all say: “Starting with Windows 7, the BITS 3.0 peer caching model is deprecated. If BITS 4.0 is installed, the BITS 3.0 peer caching model is unavailable.” However, these pages also say: “BITS (4.0) uses
    the Windows BranchCache for peer caching,” and “Starting with Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 4.0, the BITS service was extended to allow subnet-level peer caching for downloaded URL data by using Windows BranchCache.”
       http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa362708(v=vs.85).aspx
       http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964314(v=vs.85).aspx
       http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964240(v=vs.85).aspx
    And this page says: “(BITS 4.0 New Feature) Peer caching now uses Windows BranchCache. This new peer caching model replaces the model used for BITS version 3.0.”
       http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa363167(VS.85).aspx
    Okay, fine. BITS 3.0 peer caching is unavailable for Win7/2008 R2, but BITS 4.0 “peer caching” does work by using BranchCache. Got it. So, do we understand correctly that the various “peer caching” group policy settings under Computer Configuration – Policies
    – Administrative Templates – Network – Background Intelligent Transfer Service have
    no effect at all for BITS 4.0 clients?
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa362844(v=vs.85).aspx
    Next, the link at the end of this paragraph says: “Windows BranchCache must be enabled on the client through a group policy or local configuration settings.” Okay, fine. We followed the instructions at the second link to enable BranchCache for our
    Windows 7 clients. Interestingly, the description in the Turn on BranchCache group policy setting (under Computer Configuration – Policies – Administrative Templates – Network – BranchCache) says: “For this policy setting to take effect, you must install
    the BranchCache feature on the client computer.” However, it seems that the BranchCache feature is
    already installed by default (although not enabled) on Windows 7, because there’s no option to add BranchCache in Control Panel – Programs and Features – Turn Windows features on or off, and there’s already a BranchCache service on
    Windows 7. So, does this statement actually not apply to Windows 7 (and only Windows Server 2008 R2)?
       http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964314(v=vs.85).aspx
       http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637820.aspx
    Next, the link below says: “The Windows BranchCache feature is an optional component that must be installed on the server,” and “The server must also enable the Windows BranchCache feature though group policy.” Okay, fine. We followed the
    instructions at the second link to enable it for our Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. However, we would like one of our servers in the branch office to be the “Hosted Cache” server, and the remaining Win7/2008 R2 computers to just be “clients” that use the
    Hosted Cache server (for the WSUS updates). So, in this case, does only the
    Configuring a Web server or a BITS application server to use BranchCache section at this link apply to our Hosted Cache server, meaning no other steps are necessary beyond just installing the BranchCache feature? Or, do we have to go through the
    Configuring a file server to use BranchCache section?
    Likewise, does the Computer Configuration – Policies - Administrative Templates – Network - Lanman Server - Hash Publication for BranchCache group policy setting apply to us if we’re just looking to use BranchCache for WSUS updates and nothing else?
       http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964314(v=vs.85).aspx
       http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd637785.aspx
    In doing more research I believe that, for Hosted Cache mode, the BranchCache feature must be installed on
    both the WSUS server at the main site and on a server at the branch office. Is this correct?
    Next, we want to configure the BranchCache Hosted Cache mode group policy setting. However, this setting says: “This address must match the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the server specified in the certificate for the BranchCache server's certificate,”
    and “the certificate root for the BranchCache server's certificate must be in the client computer's trusted root store.” Since our BranchCache clients will only be using BITS for WSUS updates (via HTTP), is it still necessary to install a certificate
    on the Hosted Cache server? (If Yes, that's too bad, because it really complicates BranchCache deployments, especially when all of the computers are within your Active Directory domain).
    Next, there’s the Configure BranchCache for network files group policy setting. Since this setting uses SMB, we’re assuming this does not apply to BranchCache used by BITS clients, and so we don't need to configure it. Is this correct?
    So, in Summary: We just want to use BITS with BranchCache for the computers in our branch office to access WSUS updates on a local server that’s acting as a BranchCache Hosted Cache server. And we’d prefer not to have to deal with certificates to make this
    happen, if possible.
    Sorry for the long post, but there’s just no clear, one-stop place that informs us how to configure all of this.
    Oh, and is all of the above completely irrelevant
    for us since this TechNet page says BranchCache requires the
    Enterprise Editions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2? I sure hope not…   :o)
       http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2342.branchcache-settings-for-windows-server-2008-r2-windows-7-enterprise-and-windows-7-ultimate.aspx
    -Taylorbox
    NOTE: I’ve already read these posts:
       http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/windows-7/Introduction-BranchCache-Part1.html
       http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/windows-7/Deploying-Hosted-Mode-BranchCache-Server-Part2.html
       http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/windows-7/Deploying-Hosted-Mode-BranchCache-Server-Part3.html

    First, I'm curious as to why you think that a BranchCache server would consume any less disk space than a WSUS replica server?
    Because whereas our WSUS server stores all approved updates long-term, the BranchCache server would only store the updates needed for the branch office's computers, and
    short-term.
    Hmm.. this is not a benefit of branch-cache, it's merely a manifestation of an improperly maintained WSUS server.
    The WSUS has over 100GB of updates.
    Which is about TEN TIMES what should be held on a well-maintained WSUS server. :-)
    The BranchCache server should use less than 5GB since it would keep only the most recent updates
    Thus, BranchCache would contain about 50% IN CACHE of what a WSUS Replica Server would contain ON DISK.
    This TechNet page says: "BITS uses the following Group Policies to enable and configure the peer caching," but then it says: "BITS 4.0:  The BITS 3.0 Group Policies are deprecated.
    Yeah, I did a double-take first time I saw that too... what it means is that those settings, originally used in BITS 3.0 have been deprecated, and now, with BITS 4.0 and BrancheCache you need to use the BITS 4.0 settings.
    BrancheCache functionality is only available in the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7.
    A hosted cache server must be Enterprise or DataCenter editions; the functionality is not available in Standard Edition.
    Evidently for Windows 8 Professional, BranchCache
    is available for BITS (not SMB), but that's not true for Windows 7 Professional
    This is a manifestation of the change in SKUs availabe in those two products. There is no Windows 8 Ultimate, only Professional and Enterprise, and there's no longer an Enterprise Edition of the Server OS.
    In this case, when Microsoft removed the BITS 3.0 peer caching functionality with BITS 4.0 and replaced it with BranchCache, they effectively required you to use the Enterprise editions of Win7/2008 R2
    Yes. BranchCache is a feature designed for Enterprise-scale organizations with Remote offices. The presumption, and a reasonable one at that, is that such organizations have volume licensing, and with volume licensing, desktops will be installed with Enterprise
    Edition.
    The requirement of WS2008R2 Enterprise Edition is a bit more onerous, but it's nothing new. Microsoft has always made notable feature distinctions between Standard and Enterprise Editions.
    What's really significant now, though, is that Windows Server 2012 does not have an "Enterprise Edition". There's Standard Edition and Datacenter Edition, and ALL features are in BOTH editions ... so something to consider here if I've not yet convinced you
    that the simplicity of a replica WSUS server is a better choice than the complexity of implementing BranchCache -- consider deploying WS2012 instead of WS2008R2.

  • Forcing a web browser to use the system cache

    Greetings,
    We are setting-up an "enterprise configuration" of JWS where we want JWS applications installed under the system folder (e.g. "<Windows Directory>Sun\Java\Deployment") rather the user "Documents and Settings" folder. The install script will run on thousands of desktops the same day. Since we do NOT want the JAR files downloaded to all these desktops at the same time, the script does not run "javaws -import" at the end - it simply copies the files deployment.properties and deployment.config under the sysem folder with the following properties set:
    deployment.system.security.trusted.certs = C\:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\keystore.jks
    deployment.system.cachedir = C\:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\cache\\
    deployment.system.config = file:\\C:\\WINDOWS\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\deployment.properties
    deployment.system.config.mandatory = true
    The install script also copies a shortcut with the target "jawaws -system...."
    This setup works fine and the shortcut does cause the application to be downloaded at the proper system location.
    However, if the user starts the app from IE (e.g. http://xx.xx.jnlp), it ignores the system configuration and downloads the app to the local user folder.
    Is there anyway to force the download to occur in the system folder ? What I find pretty odd is that even lanuched from IE, JWS does read the deployment.properties and deployment.config files from the system folder. I've put a typo and it there and JWS complained right away.
    Thanks

    No that is not possible with code on web pages (userContent.css could probably do this).<br />
    The persona is only used as the background for the user interface (toolbar) area and not for websites.<br />
    The dimensions of the persona with the height of 200px is also not enough to cover a page.

  • BigIP F5 : changing IP leads to cache invalidated and redownload of applet jars

    Hello all,
    In short, I'm trying to figure out how to have the java 7 plugin not considering the server IP to decide whether to use cached version of our applet's signed jars.
    As suggested in the title, we use BigIP's F5 boxes to dispatch requests among actual servers, which are located in 2 different sites (disaster recovery purposes).
    Each site has an F5 box ; and our DNS resolve the application's host name by alternating between 2 different IPs : one for site 1, the other for site 2.
    Each time a user visits http://theapp.mycompany.com, the host is resolved as 9.9.9.1 or 9.9.9.2, more or less randomly.
    This works very nicely as long as the applet is not concerned, or bandwith and latency is good enough to absorb 1.5Mb in a snap.
    For remote subsidiaries (10.000km away from servers), downloading 1.5Mb takes 35s -- too much for the normal user to wait.
    And the problem is : the plugin insists on looking up the server IP each time it starts up, and ignores cache entries that have been downloaded from a different IP.
    Here is the use case :
    - user connects to http://theapp.mycompany.com ; the browser get an IP, doesn't matter which ; user logs on, navigates in the app's html pages -- no problem
    - user gets to the applet :
    - the html page says
    <applet id="myApplet">
        <param name="archive" value="a.jar,b.jar,c.jar,d.jar,e.jar"/>
        <param name="codebase_lookup" value="false"/>
        <param name="archive_1" value="a.jar, preload, version=7.5.7" />
        <param name="archive_2" value="b.jar, preload, version=7.5.7" />
        <param name="archive_3" value="c.jar, preload, version=7.5.7" />
        <param name="archive_4" value="d.jar, preload, version=7.5.7" />
        <param name="archive_5" value="e.jar, preload, version=7.5.7" />
        <param name="baseUrl" value="/"/>
        <param name="code" value="a/package/for/Applet.class"/>
        <param name="mayscript" value="mayscript"/>
        <param name="codebase" value="/applet/"/>
        <param name="name" value="MyApplet" />"
        <param name="locale" value="fr"/>
    </applet>
         The archive_n parameters are here in an attempt to tell the plugin to not even ask for jars if its cache contains entries with same host/same name/same version.
         The version is assigned at build time at an application level ; it has nothing to do with the Implementation-Version attribute found in MANIFEST.MF files.
    - Java and the plugin sarts up : let's assume this is the first time : cache is empty : all jars are downloaded ; as they are signed and the CA certificate chain was set in the browser config, and the java.policy is also configured to allow smooth exec, the applet runs smoothly -- after a long startup delay
    - user leaves the applet, do some stuff in other applet-less pages for some minutes (the java/plugin processes are shut down after a minute or so)
    - user reenters the page that contains the applet
    - Java and the plugin start up again :
         - the cache has entries for each jar : host, name, version are all ok.
         - But : the jars are not seen as "prevalidated" ; heres' the applet log ( in French, translation provided after "//") :
    network: Vérification de version pour a.jar. La version spécifiée est 7.5.7     //Checking version for a.jar. Specified version is 7.5.7
    security: La vérification de révocation de la liste noire est activée     // Check of blacklist revocation is activated
    security: blacklist: created: NEED_LOAD, lastModified: 1378474147992
    security: blacklist: hasBeenModifiedSince 1380806409906 (we have 1378474147992)
    security: La vérification de liste de bibliothèques sécurisées est activée     // Check of trusted libraries is activated
    ..... same for the other jars ....
    network: Created version ID: 7.5.7
    network: Created version ID: 7.5.7
    network: Entrée de cache trouvée [URL : http://theapp.mycompany.com/applet/a.jar, version : 7.5.7] prevalidated=false/0  //Cache entry found
    cache: Adding MemoryCache entry: http://sandbox-mosaic.jcdecaux.com/applet/plannerApplet_7.5.7.jar
    network: Created version ID: 7.5.7
         - The plugin then tries to lookup the host IP to check whether it matches that seen when creating the entry
         - 2 possibilities here :
                   - the IP returned is the same : the plugin is happy, uses the cached jar, no question/download to/from the server, and the applet starts up quick and runs ok
                   - the IP returned is not the same ; the plugin says :
    network: Vérification de version pour a.jar. La version spécifiée est 7.5.7     //Checking version for a.jar. Specified version is 7.5.
    security: blacklist: created: NEED_LOAD, lastModified: 1378474147992
    security: blacklist: hasBeenModifiedSince 1380806409906 (we have 1378474147992)
    security: La vérification de liste de bibliothèques sécurisées est activée     // Check of trusted libraries is activated
    cache: CacheEntry IP mismatch: 9.9.9.1 != 9.9.9.2
              and then it downloads again the jar.
              Of course, all the jars are treated the same way.
              Note that the applet eventually runs normally ; the only problem is that the cache essentially doesn't work, causing terribly annoying 35s delays at applet startup.
    Interestingly enough, examining the jdk 6 code shows that the "prevalidated=false" fragment (in bold/pink above) means that the method CacheEntry.isKnownToBeSigned() returns false.
    I tried with a self-signed certificate which I added first in IE as "Trusted publisher" ; I also tried with a certificate signed by a CA that is known by IE -- no help.
    So I really wonder : what does it take to have the plugin consider that each jar "isKnownToBeSigned" ?
    Any thoughts ?
    Note : we of course are considering packing jars, cleaning dead code, etc. to decrease applet size. But it doesn't help with the fact that the plugin considers the IP, which it shouldn't do in our case. And even with pack200 we're left with +350Kb of unnecessary downloads, not counting with future code to be developped ...
    Thanks for any feedback
    David

    This behavior was introduced by a security "fix" intended to prevent a DNS re-binding attack which permits unsigned applets to escape the applet sandbox.  The "fix" was, imo, very poorly thought out.  You think you have a problem with 1.5 megabits of applet jars, but I have 8 megabytes, hundreds of thousands of users, with lousy networks. So now I'm stuck with a colocation vendor.  Imagine my chagrin when they changed *their* ISP and thus their IP addresses.
    As far as I can see, signed applets are already permitted (if the user allows) to communicate outside the sandbox, so this "fix" should not have been applied to signed jars, only to unsigned ones.  There are a couple of other techniques that Oracle might have used to prevent this attack, but they chose the simplest one, effectively preventing anyone from using the most common, inexpensive strategies for improving the availability of their web-based Java applications.

  • 2008 R2: Multiple tiny branches/one head office?

    Hi all. I have a customer with their 2008 R2 servers at head office, and some branch sites which are "branch offices" but really have just one or two computers each.  However we'd really like to be able to set them up so that users can log
    into the domain (2008 R2 level) from these branch sites.
    Currently the sites are linked via persistent site to site VPN's, so the base networking is available and I've even tested joining a PC from a branch site directly to the AD servers at head office and that worked, however it was really really slow - not
    usable as a production solution.  Perhaps 3-4 minute to log in, and then just opening a Word document from a network share on the server can take a few minutes as well.  Each site is on a broadband connection that has roughly 1-2Mbps upload (10-20Mbps
    download) so I'm sure that is the bottleneck which I'm not sure we can get past with the ISP.
    So is my only solution to put a server with that Branch Cache feature at each branch office site?  I have not done branch caching or actually even multiple-site single-domain setups before so this is a bit new to me all around.  Also worth nothing
    is that this customer has folder redirection but with Offline Files sync as well.
    Thank you.

    Hi Sean, thanks for replying. I'll have to checfk out those links. My feeling is that this customer will not opt for a server at each site but if that's the only choice, maybe that'll change their mind.
    I think I'm hoping for a solution that doesn't involve new servers/licensing but as I see it, that means the only option is to optimize the bandwidth somehow for those site-to-site VPN links, which right now are only 1-2Mbps upload.  But I'll also accept
    that getting servers at the sites is the only option as long as it is.
    Each site has no more than 3 computers at a time (occasional mobile laptop user + 1 or 2 desktops).  8 sites total, so roughly 20 computers.  The main usage is to log into the domain, gain simple access to some file shares with mainly Word
    or Excel documents, perhaps some PDFs and the like.  Overall very light usage I think.  But even so, the one time I took a very fast laptop, joined it to the domain from one of these sites, the login took 3 minutes and just opening a Word doc took
    another 2+ minutes (obviously there is more at play here than just the raw bandwidth).
    Actually in retrpspect I wonder if Sync Center was running at the time - Sync Center is a terrible system performance killer even for small amounts of data.  You're right this is more of an AD design thing, but since it's branch-related I figured I'd
    post it here.
    Thanks again and I will also review those links - but first want to gather whatever additional feedback you or others have.

  • Deployment.user.cachedir

    I am trying to find deployment.user.cachedir System property from an applet. When I use System.getProperty"deployment.user.cachedir"); it returns null. However, I can list it out in the Java Console by dumping the environment (S) while my applet is running. Any ideas on how to get this to work?
    deployment.system.profile = C:\WINDOWS
    deployment.system.security.policy = file:/C:/WINDOWS/Sun/Java/Deployment/security/java.policy
    deployment.user.cachedir = C:\Documents and Settings\DSmaltz\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache
    deployment.user.certs = C:\Documents and Settings\DSmaltz\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\security\deployment.certs
    deployment.user.extdir = C:\Documents and Settings\DSmaltz\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\ext
    deployment.user.home = C:\Documents and Settings\DSmaltz\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment
    deployment.user.jssecerts = C:\Documents and Settings\DSmaltz\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\security\deployment.jssecerts
    Thank You

    Thank you for your response. I am using jdk1.3.1 and
    jre 1.4.2_01 which I just downloaded the other day.
    The properties did indeed list out in the console, but
    I will check a previous jre to see if they are there
    as well. I agree that if the property is available,
    then it should return the value.5. What system properties can be read by applets, and how?
    In both Java-enabled browsers and the appletviewer, applets can read these system properties by invoking System.getProperty(String key):
    key               meaning
    java.version          Java version number
    java.vendor          Java vendor-specific string
    java.vendor.url     Java vendor URL
    java.class.version     Java class version number
    os.name          Operating system name
    os.arch          Operating system architecture
    os.version     Operating system version
    file.separator     File separator (eg, "/")
    path.separator     Path separator (eg, ":")
    line.separator     Line separator
    Applets are prevented from reading these system properties:
    key               meaning
    java.home          Java installation directory
    java.class.path     Java classpath
    user.name          User account name
    user.home          User home directory
    user.dir          User's current working directory
    To read a system property from within an applet, simply invoke System.getProperty(key) on the property you are interested in.

    I found that JS2E has this enhancement:
    System Cache: Java Web Start now contains both system and user caches. The system administrator can now pre-load applications and shared libraries into the system cache so that multiple users can share the same resources.
    Now how exactly do I pre-load applications?

    Clearly the documentation of these two subjects needs to be addressed. I will try to get a compete "How to" document posted later in the month, meanwhile:
    1.0)Enterprise Configuration Setup
    To configure a system or enterprise configuration, you need to create a file called deployment.config and put it in the right place. Java Plug-in and Java Web Start will look for this file first in the directory it calls deployment system home , and if not found there, will look in lib directory of the JRE you are running Plug-in or Web Start from. The deployment.system.home directory is platform dependent. On unix, it is /etc/.java/deployment. On Windows it is <windows dir>/Sun/Java/Deployment.
    If the file is in deployment.system.home, it will be used by all jres (only valid from 5.0 and up). If the file is not there, but in the lib directory of the jre, it will only be used when that Plugin-in or Web Start are launched from that jre.
    The file contains is a java properties file, with only two possible properties in it: deployment.system.config, and deployment.system.config.mandatory. Here are two example deployment.config files:
    deployment.system.config=http\://MyCompany.com/deployFiles/deployment.properties
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    deployment.system.config=file\:/C\:/Program Files/java/jre1.5.0/lib/deployment.properties
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=false
    Note in both examples, the colon in a properties file must be escaped. This also applies to backslashes themselves in the examples below. This is a common problem.
    The first example could be deployed by the admin in deployment.system.home, to require all jres used on this system to load the default and locked properties from the url before launching any Java Plug-in applet or Java Web Start application.
    The second example could be deployed with the jre, with both deployment.config and deployment.properties
    The deployment.properties file pointed to, can contain any of the properties that can be contained in the users deployment.property file (see list on http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html). They can also lock properties by listing the property key with .locked appended to it. Here is an example system deployment.properties file:
    deployment.user.cachedir=D\:\\deployment\\cache
    deployment.security.sandbox.awtwarning=false
    deployment.security.askgrantdialog.notinca=false
    deployment.security.askgrantdialog.notinca.locked
    The first two properties are not locked. The use can change to use a different cache location, or turn back on the AWT Warning banner. The last property is locked. The user is not allowed to grant trust to applications who's jars are selfsigned (or signed with any root not in the rootCA certificate store, nor is he allowed to change this setting. The entry in the control panel for this property will be disabled, and any change made to the users deployment.properties file for this property will be ignored.
    Now for system cache:
    The system cache property is:"deployment.system.cache.dir". It can be set in either an enterprise or users deployment.properties file with:
    deployment.user.cachedir=D\:\\deployment\\system\\cache

  • Branchcache not caching files

    Hi all
    Hoping for some help with this.
    I have a Windows Server 2012 Essential server set up. Branchcache has been turned on. Clients appear to be configured correctly, however they never cache data. I have tried using shares in the format of
    \\servername\share as well as \\servername.domain.local\share
    I have made sure that the share has been enabled for Branch Cache as well
    I have turned Branch cache on in the server essentials dashboard as well.
    Any Ideas ?

    Hi,
    As there is no much information about this issue. I'd like to start from the configurations. First I would like to know the structure.
    We should have the following devices:
    1. Content server - which should be in the main office.
    2. Client computers - should be Windows 7 (or 8) Enterprise/Ultimate version in branch office.
    For content server, please refer to this article for the settings about "Hash Publication for BranchCache" as well as how to enable BranchCache.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2342.branchcache-settings-for-windows-server-2008-r2-windows-7-enterprise-and-windows-7-ultimate.aspx#z1
    From your description, it is using "Distributed Caching", which means clients will cache the data on their own computer.
    So after configuration, use a computer (such as a Windows 7 system) to access your content server for a shared folder in order to create a cache.
    Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and un-mark them if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]

  • SCCM 2012 R2 site server client installation error: The client version 5.00.7958.1000 does not match the MP version 5.00.7804.1000.

    Hello,
    When I try to install the client on the site server itself it gives me this error message and fails the ccmsetup. I only have this on the site server. Clients to other servers and computers are pushed fine. If I check the version of the MP it says 5.00.7958.1000
    in ADSI. I removed the MP object in CN=System, CN=System Management. Waited for it to be regenerated automatically by SCCM but the installation doesn't work still.
    I tried to install with several methods including directly from ccmsetup.exe in ccmsetup folder, pushing by sccm itself, running from commandline, ...
    I run SCCM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 and the database on SQL 2008 on Server 2008 R2

  • ConfigMgr Clients connection over direct access.

    My test client machine is running Windows 8.1 and connecting to network through Direct Access. I am running SCCM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012.
    Test Machine: NYWIN8
    SCCM Server: SCCM01
    Domain: demo.local
    I would like to understand how configmgr handles clients connecting through direct access. What all functionality is available for such clients?
    On my client machine is see following errors:
    FSPSTATEMESSAGE.LOG

    Are there any issues due to connecting using direct access?

    When I try to deploy any software (7-ZIP or Notepad++) to this client I get following error:
    The software change returned error code 0x87D00607(-2016410105).
    I can deploy same software fine to other machines connecting on LAN.
