BranchCache client cache encryption

On one hand, TechNet says this about BranchCache in 2012 and 8:
What’s new in BranchCache in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8
Cache Encryption. Cached data is now stored encrypted by default.  This allows you to ensure data security without using drive encryption technologies.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj127252.aspx
Then in BranchCache Overview it says this:
Data that is stored in the content cache is not encrypted, so if data leakage is a concern, you can use encryption technologies such as BitLocker or the Encrypting File System (EFS).
A paragraph later it says this:
Hosted cache servers that are running Windows Server 2012 encrypt all data in the cache by default, so the use of additional encryption technologies is not required.
http://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh831696(Other posts here in the forum asking similar questions are generally referred to this article)
It seems clear that the cache is encrypted by default on the server.  But what about the client?  These articles appear to be in contradiction. Either the client cache is encrypted in Windows 8 by default or it is not.  So which
is it?
THANKS!
(If it's only server cache, then an update is needed in the What's New in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 section because no distinctions between client and server is made there.  This is misleading)

Hi,
Thanks for your post.
According to the MS article, Hosted cache servers that are running Windows Server 2012 encrypt all data in
the cache by default, so the use of additional encryption technologies is not required.
BranchCache is designed to prevent unauthorized access to content. Content is encrypted when transferred between peers or between clients and the hosted cache server. Content can only be decrypted using the identifiers provided by the content server in the
main office.
There is a similar thread have been discussed:

  • Client cache size reverts to default

    (SCCM 2012 SP1 with CU5)
I've used a powershell script to set the client cache size to 20GB, using get-wmiobject and the Put() function.  I've deployed this to a test collection of PCs using a CI with remediation, and it's both checking and remediating correctly.
However, while the 'compliance' is reported at near 100%, when manually checking the clients, many have reset to 5120MB. This affects both Windows 7 and 8.x based clients.
To take one client specifically, at the time of writing this the CI reports it ran and remediated at 11:45am - it is now 8pm, and the cache is back to 5120.
Triggering the CI to evaluate again sets the cache to 20GB (verified via get-wmiobject), but I'm sure if I check again at some point tomorrow it will have reverted to 5120 again.
I can't see any evidence in any client log that indicates what could be causing this.  I've looked into how I can see what has made the change in WMI via the Analytic/Debug logs in Event Viewer, but the tracing available needs to be run at the
time the change is made - and I don't know exactly when that is.
    Any ideas?!
    Thanks, Bob
Edit:  CI is set to evaluate every day at 9am.  Client push properties on primary site now include SMSCACHESIZE=20480, but this is recent change - when the existing clients were installed this was not present so they installed at 5120MB.

Changing the value directly in WMI is unsupported. You need to use the UIResource.UIResourceMgr COM object to perform this task on the client side:

  • SCCM 2012 and 2012 sp1 client cache not cleaning itself

I work on a University campus that deploys 100's of software titles to lab computers.  Since last summer, we have been using Config Man 2012 and upgraded to 2012 SP1 in early Jan.  Recently we started noticing 160GB hard drives filling up in locations
that get most of our software.  When looking into it, the ccmcache folder has 50GB+ of data in it even though the cache size is set to 30GB.  I looked at the folders in the cache and many of them are from last summer when the apps were first
downloaded and installed.  NONE of these apps are set to persist.  My understanding is that they should have been cleaned up automatically after 24 hours as space was needed.  Either way, shouldn't the cache folder be at or smaller than the
    cache size setting?
I have talked to others that have seen similar problems with 2012 of the cache folder growing beyond the max, but they don't have the software load that we do, so they are not filling their drives.  If I manually tell Confi Man client to delete the
cache files, I free up 50GB or more, but manual intervention isn't a great option.
Any ideas on where to troubleshoot this issue or what settings might be messed up that allows for this?
    Thanks

How much of this is software updates?  Like in 2007 software updates are not counted against the cache size:
"You can configure the location and amount of disk space that Windows Configuration Manager clients use to store temporary files for when they install applications and programs. Software updates also use the client cache, but software updates
are not restricted by the configured cache size and will always attempt to download to the cache"

  • Error Code - client cache is smaller than the size of the requested content

Even though we have increased the size of the ccmcache via Control Panel > Configuration Manager, we still get the Error Code 0x87D01202 (-2016407038) "the content
download cannot be performed because the total size of the client cache is smaller than the size of the requested content"  The CCMEXEC Service and computer have both been restarted, after increasing the ccmcache size.  Which local log
file under C:\Windows\CCM\Logs should we check for more information ?
    Thanks

so when you re deploying the client go into your settings and set the variable below:
    smscachesize=10240
    note:
    SMSCACHESIZE
Specifies the size of the client cache folder in megabyte (MB) or as a percentage when used with the PERCENTDISKSPACE or PERCENTFREEDISKSPACE property. If this property is not set, the folder defaults to a maximum size of 5120 MB. The lowest value that you
    can specify is 1 MB.
    Note
If a new package that must be downloaded would cause the folder to exceed the maximum size, and if the folder cannot be purged to make sufficient space available, the package download fails, and the program or application will not run.
This setting is ignored when you upgrade an existing client and when the client downloads software updates.
    Example: CCMSetup.exe SMSCACHESIZE=100
    Note
If you reinstall a client, you cannot use the SMSCACHESIZE or SMSCACHEFLAGS installation properties to set the cache size to be smaller than it was previously. If you try to do this, your value is ignored and the cache size is automatically set to the last
    size it was previously.
For example, if you install the client with the default cache size of 5120 MB, and then reinstall the client with a cache size of 100 MB, the cache folder size on the reinstalled client is set to 5120 MB.

  • SCCM Client Cache management

    Hi All,
I wanted to know how we can manage the client cache, we are on the process of patching in our prod environment & we found that on most of our client machine C Drive is filling up fast. Wanted to know how SCCM handles this, do these updates get deleted
automatically from the client cache or i have to configure something to delete them.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Pranay.

What is the cache size currently set to on your clients?
I think the default is around 5400mb.
You could use the below VB script to change the cache size on the devices, just change the value to the value required.
    On Error Resume Next
    Dim UIResManager
    Dim Cache
    Dim CacheSize
    CacheSize=20000
    Set UIResManager = createobject("UIResource.UIResourceMgr")
    Set Cache=UIResManager.GetCacheInfo()
    Cache.TotalSize=CacheSize
    Some info here too:

  • SCCM 2012 – Client Installation properties - client cache size

    Hi,
I'm setting the command line options for the client push install and taking into account the default client cache size is 5120MB. But my concern is a lot our servers and some workstations don't have enough free disk space for this.
So I was going to set the cache size to only use a certain percentage, say 10% for example:
    SMSSITECODE=xxx SMSCACHEFLAGS=PERCENTDISKSPACE;NTFSONLY SMSCACHESIZE=10 SMSMP=FQDN-MP FSP=FQDN-FSP
So does it allocate 10% of the total hard disk size or 10% of the free disk space available?
    Thanks

As Torsten noted, this isn't an allocation or reservation of disk space. It's a maximum size that the ConfigMgr agent will allow the cache to grow to. If the servers don't have enough free space, the ConfigMgr agent won't stop or block or cause any
failures until it actually needs to use that space.
However, if you honestly have servers and workstations that don't have 5GB of free disk space, you've got much, much bigger problems.

  • MSI Installer Cache & "Persist in Client Cache"

    Hello,
I'm predominantly using the Application Model and just a few Packages.  I'm noticing on Software Deployments that the Downloaded Content eventually gets purged and then when a user goes to launch the software it states that it cannot find the reference
MSI within CCMCache.  I talked to some other people and they said that Packages would automatically put the cache in the Windows Installer Database to eliminate that issue and weren't sure how the Application Model handled this.  Is the only way
for me to fix this to set the application to 'Persist in Client Cache?'  If so, I have a lot of things to redo.
Looking for advice and how this is supposed to work under both the Application and Package Model.
    Thanks!

As long as you supply the product code at the bottom of the Programs tab on the Deployment Type, then the same thing will happen for applications. Essentially, the client agent adds a location from the DP to the source path for the MSI to enable
    repairs.
    Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com
Hmm.  These were standard MSI's that were imported so all of those codes should have imported in correctly?  Not sure why I'd be seeing issues from clients.

  • Citrix App v Client Cache Issues

    Hello,
I am having a few issues with the app v client cache on my 2008 R2 Citrix servers. All the servers have a 40GB dedicated virtual HD for caching. I have nine Citrix servers and a test server that are all built the exact same. I have been using the test server
to test the published apps before publishing them out to citrix.
The issue is that while I was publishing the apps through app v  the apps were being published to all the machines. The only machine that i was regularly clearing the cache on during the testing period was my test server. The citrix server had all those
different versions being published to them without clearing the old application.
Now i am seeing that the test server is the only server caching apps properly. The citrix servers will load older broken versions of the apps even after the apps have been cleared and then refreshed and reloaded.
I will include the steps i have tried to solve this issue below. I apologize if my post is not crystal clear, but if you have questions feel free to ask. Any help is appreciated.
    1. Clear apps from cache by right clicking on the app in the app v client on the problem server and selecting delete.
    2. Set the registry key HKLM/software/wow6432node/microsoft/softgrid/4.6/client/Appfs/state to 0 to clear the cached and rebooted with no change.
3.I have manually removed all the files saved on the cache drive and had them re added by re loading all the apps.
    4. I used the global remove command - sftmime.exe /remove obj:app /complete /global
    Thanks,
    Mike P.

    Dear Mike
We have similar issues with the App-V Client cache on App-V 4.6SP3 with XenApp 5.  The main issue seemed to be applciations getting trapped in the cache and then not clearing out correctly.
My soultion was as to remove the app-v client from the base image (this gets rid of the cache), clear out the app-v folders just in case then reinstall it to start the cache from scratch.
We have a PVS environment with a standard image so it was fairly simple to do and I used a startup script to reinstall the app-v client and load in the apps everytime our provisioned servers are rebooted ensuring a clean app-v cache every reboot.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi,
As there is no much information about this issue. I'd like to start from the configurations. First I would like to know the structure.
We should have the following devices:
    1. Content server - which should be in the main office.
    2. Client computers - should be Windows 7 (or 8) Enterprise/Ultimate version in branch office.
For content server, please refer to this article for the settings about "Hash Publication for BranchCache" as well as how to enable BranchCache.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2342.branchcache-settings-for-windows-server-2008-r2-windows-7-enterprise-and-windows-7-ultimate.aspx#z1
From your description, it is using "Distributed Caching", which means clients will cache the data on their own computer.
So after configuration, use a computer (such as a Windows 7 system) to access your content server for a shared folder in order to create a cache.

  • Client Cache requires ridiculous amount of disk space

I'm testing SCCM 2012 R2 with a Windows 7 client. I'm on my second application install and both apps gave me error that the cache was not large enough. The first time I increased it to 9GB and for the second app I increased it to 15GB. Both times I did it
    manually from the client machine.
If these apps are only 5MB in size why is the cache having to take up so much room? Also, is there a way to have the install automatically delete the cache if the install will be too big?

I've never had this type of issue, in all the years we've used ConfigMgr.
Assuming your installation of ConfigMgr is healthy, the first thing I'd look into, is if you may have inadvertently created the package for your 5Mb application by specifying the wrong source folder.
What I mean by that, is that sometimes, it's easy to inadvertently point the package source location at the wrong folder for source, if you point the source folder at, say, the root of a large software library (instead of the specific application folder), your
end up creating a package that is massive in size because it has all source for all applications in a single package.
(I've seen it done. It's not funny at the time, but afterwards, it gets a grin and office-myth status ;)
So, on a client, examine the ccmcache folders and content. if there's only supposed to be a single application install source in there, verify that.

  • Sccm Client Cache folder size growing instead of limit set

    Hi Everyone.
    Greetings.
We have noticed that in our sccm environment, the cache folder size (under CCM path) in clients keeps increasing but however it should not as i believe the older contents automatically to be removed while downloading new contents.
The cache folder to download the contents as by default set to 5GB and we haven't modified anything on that.
Please suggest us on this as it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Thangaraj

    Hi Jason,
Yes. However we are using software distribution as well.
We noticed recently this large size CCM folder (19GB) in one of our server as C drive is running out of space.
But when i looked at the contents inside that CCMCache folder, below are the findings.
The content size of all the advertisements are around 18GB.
The content size of software updates are around 1GB.
MS KB patches, Service packs are pushed through software advertisement(present inside folder named as package ID. So it cannot be considered as software updates deployment right?
    Please suggest. Thanks.

  • Cisco anyconnect secure mobility client + caching

    Hi,
We have recently implemented wifi at our location, all working fine with the below exception. we have cisco anyconnect secure mobility client installed on all laptops for VPN access. we are facing a problem as the vpn client is caching the credentilas i.e inorder to connect to the corp wifi, we need ot add a profile in the anyconnect client with the SSID, security and 802.1x configuration bcoz my WIFI infra is setup to use ISE as the authentication manager and WLC is integrated with ISE. First time when someone tries to connect to wifi, it prompts for the credentials. but for the subsequent connections it is not prompting for the credentials and somehow it is picking from the cache or somewhere. How can i disable this? I want the users to be prompted for credentials whenever they try to connect to the corp wifi? FYI, we are using cisco anyconnect secure moile client 3.0.5 version.
    Thanks,
    Sridhar

I'm guessing that it is this setting...
Go to C:\ProgramData\Cisco\Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client and edit the AnyConnectLocalPolicy.xml.
    Change this line to:
              All
It's probably best to use the AnyConnect Profile Editor to do this and I'm also not sure if this is something that can be pushed from the gateway to all machines.

  • Client caching!

    Hi,
We have a Java Web Start application, which caches around 500MB of heavy weight objects in memory. These corresponds to different reports and it kind of grows over the time. I am looking for some kind of architecture framework or some work around to maintain this cache at the client side. It is bit late to change the architecture and it is important to cache all the objects.
Could somebody suggest your views on this?
    Thank You,

  • Control client cache for JSP

There are many threads on the web about how to force a reload rather than pulling content from cache. My problem is the opposite. I am trying to get good cache control for a jsp application that has relatively static contents. My goal is to serve up pages with the following characteristics:
    For client calls:
If there is no version in cache, the jsp builds a new version and sets the response date header "Expires" to 5 days later.
If within the Expires date, have the client just use the cached version: no validation or roundtripping.
If after the Expires date, roundtrip: have the jsp return 303 (SC_NOT_MODIFIED) if no content changed. Also, ideally, also reset the Exipres date to an additional 5 days.
Otherwise, recreate the response and start over...
I am experiencing different behaviors with different browsers, although none act as I was hoping.
When there is no relevant page in cache, all of the browsers accept a new version (and I think that they all put it in cache). All browsers reload the page using the reload button.
If there is a relevant page in cache and it has not expired:
    1. FireFox 3 seems to roundtrip, but then use the version in cache.
    2. IE 7 seems to always use the cache version without checking the server
    3. Google Chrome seems to always roundtrip and reload.
I tried several variations including setting/not setting the Last-Modified date header and setting/not Cache-Control: no-control header (to force validation).
    Neither Last-Modified nor no-contro: NO CHANGE FROM ABOVE;
Last-Modified set, no-control not specified: NO CHANGE
Last-Modified not set, Cache-Control set to no-control to force validation.
The main problem here is that I was unable to get a value for the request header "Last-Modifier" so that my jsp could not set the 303 return, therefore all browsers roundtrip and reload.
    SO...
    1. What do I need to do to get all browsers to pull from cache and not roundtrip prior to the Expires date?
    2. After the Expires date, what do I need to do to get the request to include the Last-Modified date header sent to the server?

let me tell you from BSP side !
within your BSP application set a javascript timer for 2 minutes and upon completion run a javascript to kill the backend session along with the SSO2 cookie.
    check the BSP application system/session_single_frame.htm
    for a javascript named "exitBSPApplication"
    Hope this is helpful.
    Regards
