Branching quiz

I am trying to create a course that has two versions of a
short quiz, one in English and one in Finnish. Unfortunately, I
can't seem to get the settings right so that the learner can choose
which quiz to take and so that the score for the quiz that the
learner took is displayed.
In the slide before the quiz (slide 6), I have inserted two
buttons, one for each language. I have set the Finnish button
properties so that when the button is clicked, the learner is taken
to slide 7 (the first of the three questions in Finnish). I have
set the English button properties so that when the button is
clicked, the learner is taken to slide 10 (the first of the three
questions in English).
On the third and last Finnish question slide (#9), I clicked
on "Edit Question" and on the "options" tab set it so that the
learner would jump to slide 13 (the quiz results page) when
successfully answering or incorrectly answering (though I've also
checked the "show retry message" box so that the learner has 4
chances to get the correct answer). When the learner submits their
answer to the question on slide 9, however, they are led to slide
10 (the first of the English version of the quiz) and not their
results.
Also, when the learner clicks on the English button, nothing
happens (i.e. they are not taken to slide 10).
The quiz results page shows a score for a 6 question quiz,
not a 3 question quiz.
Can someone help me?
Art

Hi Art,
Have you thought of breaking up your single Captivate project
into 3 smaller and simpler projects?
Project one could be a simple slide with 2 buttons, button
one in English and button two in Finnish. Clicking button one takes
the user to the English quiz, button two takes the user to the
Finnish quiz.
Just a thought, this might not be a suitable option in an LMS
system. I'd have to think about it a bit and right now I have a
meeting to go to.
Cheers,
TPK

  • Create a branching quiz

How do you create a branching quiz using the quiz slides?
I tried to use variables (e.g. userChoice, totalScore). I added action to assign userChoice to a number based on the choice. Then I executed adavanced actions in quiz propertiies with if the right answer is chosen, jump to a different slide + add 1 to the totalScore. else, it goes to a different quiz slide.
It is stuck in the slide without advancing to the right slide.
Any reason why it does not work?
    Thanks,

Lilybiri, Thank you for the quick response. I put the screen capture while reading your blog now. This is the first time I'm trying to use quiz in Captivate so I'm not familiar with some of the terms.
    > But I'm wondering if you are using default Question slides or  custom question slides, because you talk about storing in user varaibles. Could you try to explain exactly what you are using and what you want to achieve, more specifically if you want to report the score to a LMS or not?
I'm trying to create is a template for soft skill simulations. Maybe a video playback of a situation and ask the learn what to do next. The user clicks on a choice. It provides feedback (or not) and goes to a slide based on the user choice. I would evaluate using the variable totalScore and choice user made in each step. At the end, I would pass that data to Lectora.
I inserted a question slide, edited, and duplicated for multiple questions as different steps for the simulation. The Quiz result page is at the end. Does that count as within quiz scope?
    > The screenshot of the action popped up while I was answering. What is the action Else:
I have it jump to slide of a different slide for the less favorable choices.
Thanks for the info on cpQuizInfoAnswerChoice. I just tried but this system variable is not on the list in the pull-down menu. It only has: cpComndShowPlaybar, cpCmndMute, cpLockTOC, and user variables.

  • Multi-language branching quiz

    Hello All,
I'm trying to streamline a 2 language project by having a
branching quiz (1 branch English, 1 branch French). I have the
question pools and questions set up no problem but I'm wondering
how/if I can have two separate "Results" slides (1 for each
    branch).
At the end of the day I can always just build 2 separate
projects and link them but that seems a bit kludgey to me.
    Any help is appreciated.

    ...using Cap 3

Hoan - is your question what are the considerations when creating multiligual catalogs? If so, I can tell you that at other clients I have seen them use a single catalog for one or two languages. For the two langugages, such as Spanish/English, you can create a single catalog with both of them. Once you get to more than two languages, the catalog would get unweildy and is therefore not suggested.

  • Branching Quiz:  Review Quiz shows ALL questions and MaxScore includes too many scores

I'm using Captivate 6 (trial version) and I am testing out the branching capability following this tutorial ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-_Ja8vlZQw). The branching is working, but if I get to the end of my quiz and then select 'Review Quiz', it shows ALL the slides, including the ones that should NOT show up because the user selected options that didn't trigger them.
Also, it looks like the Maximum Score on the results slide includes the scores the user could get on slides they never see because of the branching :(.

It has been a while since I tested this, but it did work for me. I suppose you are using version 6.0.1.240? Because I had some issues before the patch. I will check again if you confirm the version. And you are sure to have checked Branch aware in Quiz Preferences?

  • Complex branching quiz help

I have a request to do a quiz where the incorrect responses
provide specific, different feedback. From what I've seen in
Captivate quizzes I can do a retry, but cannot connect the 1st and
2nd incorrect feedback to a specific choice. ex: choose B get
feedback 1, choose C get feedback 2. As an alternative, I can go
the way of creating branching scenario with slides that provide the
specific feedback, but I cannot figure out how to get the scoring
to work where they only get credit if the correct answer is
selected as a first choice - AND how do I get a results page that
shows the final grading which pops in automatically with Quiz,
Question slides. is this just too complex for Captivate? ARGH!
    Using version 3.
I now this is a lot to ask on a forum, and thanks to all who
know more than me. I appreciate your help.
    Donna

For Multiple Choice questions, you can add feedback that is
specific to the answer chosen (I don't think you can do this with
any other question type). This might get you a good distance into
your solution. Create a multiple choice question and for each
answer you type in, click on the Advanced... button under the Add
and Delete buttons. Check the Advanced Answer Options box at the
top and the Show Feedback Message box at the bottom. This will add
a text field to your slide for each answer you do this with. You
can edit each of those fields with the specific feedback for that
    answer.
I haven't been able to do this in such a way that you are
able to make more than one attempt, though. Once you pick the wrong
answer and get the feedback as to why that answer is wrong, the
next thing you click moves you on to the next slide. We've gotten
around that by making multiple copies of the question slide. Kind
    of a pain.
I don't know the answer to your results page question if
choosing "Show score at end of quiz" in the settings in Preferences
    didn't work.
Sorry I can't be more help than that.

  • Branching quiz based on unanswered questions

I'm using Captivate 5.5 to design an awareness module that contains 2 short knowledge checks at key points in the module (around 5-6 questions for each). The knowledge checks aren't compulsory and learners can move freely backwards and forwards through the module, and therefore can skip questions.
We want to encourage them to answer all the questions (but not force them to if they don't want to). I've thought of branching the module at the end, with uncompleted questions branching to a reminder slide, and all questions completed going to a summary of the module.
The way I've tried to do this is to use an Advanced Action with the CpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions variable to trigger the branching. This works okay if the learner doesn't move backwards. Once they go backwards past a question they haven't answered yet it will be counted as unanswered a second time. This means that there is no way they can ever get the variable to 0 and then move to the summary slide.
Is there any way to use the CpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions variable to get it counting the unanswered questions correctly?
The other way I had thought of doing it was to add another variable that changes when the branching/reminder slide is visited the first time, and having the Advanced Action check the variable to see if the slide has been visited before and if it has then it forces the slide to be skipped. This would assume that the learner went back and found and answered all the questions they missed or decided not to answer them all.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

My latest blog post has a work flow, not totally the same because it is meant for Review status, but can easily be translated to make your last scenario possible.

  • Small Branch Aware Quiz Returning NaN Results

I'm trying to use the Branch Aware function to constuct a quiz for 3 different tracks that people can choose. My real file is not working, so I created a small example, and it's not working either. Here is a screenshot of the branching view to give a sense for the flow:
When I hit the quiz for branch 1, I answer it correctly, and the quiz results show this:
As far as I can tell, it's the same for all three branches.
Feel free to download the file and tell me where I'm going wrong. This is just my first time, so I'm sure there's something I've overlooked...  You can find the file here: http://www.theharagans.com/captivate7/BranchingQuizTest.cptx
    Many thanks in advance!

    UPDATE with a REAL SOLUTION!
Okay, my intention of having a branching quiz was to have a student take 1, some, or all (their choice) of a multiple-track module, with each track having its own quiz. My flaw originated in that I had the action on the last quiz slide for each branch to go to the quiz results slide, however, if the action on the last quiz slide for a branch is to go back to the point at which a student picks which module they want, the quiz doesn't break.
What I ended up doing was creating a button on the "menu" slide that takes the student to the quiz results. That HAS to be the last action the student takes before they're done with the module. If the module in any way loops back AFTER the quiz results are displayed, the quiz breaks.
So the branching view now looks like this, and it works for taking multiple tracks in the same iteration of the training.

  • HELP! Lesson with 2 branches locking on Quiz Result screen when learner (of either branch) fails.

I have a CP6 lesson which is essentially two parallel branches, with only the following slides in common:
    A "Welcome" slide
A slide where the learner chooses his branch
A "Congrats!  You completed the test" slide
A "You did not answer the questions correctly" slide
Once the learner chooses his branch, he is given a 5-question test.   If he fails the test, he is taken to a short lesson, specific to the content tested in that branch.   When he finishes the lesson, he is taken BACK to the test to try again.  If he fails, back to the lesson, then back to the test, etc.  until he passes.  (I set max attempts to "10" under "Quiz Preferences")   When he passes, he is taken to the "Congrats" slide and the lesson ends.
I set the last question in each branch to go to the Quiz Results slide (success or fail), and I set the Quiz Preferences to jump to the "Congrats" slide if passing, and to the "You did not answer the questions correctly" slide if learner fails.
That's how it's supposed to work anyway.  And that's how it WAS working until I made a change somewhere and mucked it all up.
    What is happening instead is:
Passing test (both branches) takes learner to Quiz Results and the "Congrats" slide just fine.
Failing test (either branch) takes learner to Quiz Results and then gets stuck there.    (In fact, if I click the "Continue" button a second time on the QR slide, the lesson still doesn't advance but all the graphics I put on that slide disappear, which is weird and not at all helpful.)
The branching looks ok to me.   What am I missing?
I know I need to upgrade, and we will be soon, but not before this lesson has to be published -- which is, of course, yesterday.
    Help?  Anyone?

Figured it out.  Had "Required" on the "Quiz: Settings" page set to "Pass Required - The user must pass the quiz to continue".  That kept the learner from continuing beyond the "Quiz Results" slide and looping back to the didactic content and retaking the quiz.
I changed "Required" to "Required - The user must take the quiz to continue."   Learner is able to loop back/read/retest as many times as needed in order to pass the quiz.  All is well.

  • Conditional Branching with quiz slides not working

Attempting to use conditional branches with quiz slidescauses
the other quiz slides in my presentation to not work correctly. I
am attempting to create a 'test-out' pre-quiz for a segment of
slides in the presentation. I followed the instructions to add
conditional branching per page 46 of the Breeze Presenter User
Guide to obviously no avail. Is there a simple straightfoward
manner in which someone has successfully used conditional branches
with their quiz slides in their presentation?

    Hi,
I had the same issue.Apparently as of now PDF templates do not support conditional formatting for XML Publisher.
See Tim Dexter's response to my query at the bottom of this thread...
Re: Using the '%' operator in microsoft word template builder for XMLP
I could get some conditional formatting to work on the pdf template but only for the form field font, size and styles using Javascript, but I don't think there is a way to display values for the form field based on an if condition...

  • Random branching for quiz questions

I have a quiz that has ten questions. I want participants to
answer all ten questions but not in any specific order. Is there a
setting for random branching within a quiz?

I've uploaded our solution to the random quiz in captivate to
the exchange. It doesnt randomize within a quiz, but it randomizes
quizzes from a pool of quizzes, which can have a similar effect.
This is a javascript patch to the HTML wrapper generated by

  • Quiz + Branching

I have setup branching in my captivate project using advanced actions which cause my questions to jump based on categories. Everything works great and scoring shows up correctly.
The problem is that the variable "cpQuizInfoTotalUnansweredQuestions" is countinh for entire quiz when my research indicates it should be branch aware...
I think the problem might be that when I got into branch view it does not show branches. I have attempted to create branches in the branch view by setting success/failures to jump but not work.
Any thoughts or suggestions on why branching isn't working properly?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Which version are you using? Do I understand that you checked the option 'Branch aware' in the Quiz Preferences, that the score slide shows the correct results but not when you insert the quizzing system variable that you mentioned in a separate text container? Did you research perhaps include the table with system variables that I offer on my blog?
Branching view has never been able to show branching that is based on advanced actions at all, an old pain that makes it pretty unusable unless for simple branching.

  • Branching from end of quiz slide

I'm trying to branch from the end of quiz slide.
The last quiz question will either send users to pass
certificate for printing or Sorry, try again slide. When user
prints certificate the published exe file doesn't know where to go
next and goes to a blank screen. On the end of quiz slide, is there
a way to add an exit to the exe standalone publish mode?

Got it. Forgot Quiz Prefs - pass goes to certificate, fail
    goes to sorry slide....

  • Quiz review on branching

    Hi there!
I have a very simple test project with an issue on the "Review Quiz". There is the "Branch-aware" flag and a link to the project at the end to restart and reset everything. But when I click the "Review quiz" after completing the "Sondrio" path, CP is showing the slides I answered and the slides of the other PATH (Bergamo) that I did not answered with the alert: "You did not answer this question completely". I have not the same behavior on the other path. I cleared the cash of the project from General Settings and this is not an LMS project. I'm using CP8 8.0.1.242 version.
How can I take the review quiz on both branch paths only for the slides I answered? Thanks!
Here is the original file if you want to test it:

What setting do you have in Quiz > Settings > Required?  If it's not set to Optional, do that.

  • Quiz Scoring When Branching

    Hi all,
    I'm on CP5 for Mac.
I have a short quiz with two questions. If they get the first question correct, I want to take the learner to a second question slide based on implicit feedback. If they miss the first question, I want to take the learner to a second, different slide that is, again, based on implicit feedback. Point is, I want to go to two different places depending on if the first question is correct. I know I can use an advanced action to make this happen.
The second slide is basically asking the same question whether or not the learner got the first question right. My path looks like a "Y"... which means I have three questions in the quiz. I only want two questions to be scored. Here's my question: what kinds of problems will this approach present for CP? Is there a better workflow to create this type of quiz that I should be aware of?
I have to report results to an LMS.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
P.S. Lillybri, just getting this one out there to get some feedback while I go work your tutorials. :-)

The above approach worked. I created a user variable called q1Correct. On entering the first question slide, I ran an action called initScenario and set q1Correct with a default value of 0 in anticipation of the learner getting the question wrong. On exiting the slide, if the learner answered the question correctly, I ran another action called q1IsCorrect and changed the value of q1Correct to 1; then I jumped to question slide 2. If the learner missed the first question, I just jumped to slide 2 - since q1Correct already had a default value of 0, indicating that the answer was wrong, I didn't need to run any actions on exit with an incorrect answer. On the second question slide, I checked the value of q1IsCorrect in a third (conditional) action, and showed my custom text accordingly. More specifically, if q1Correct was equal to 1 (meaning the answer was right), then I showed the appropriate text caption. Conversely, if q1Correct was 0 (meaning the earlier answer was incorrect), I showed another text caption.
    Case closed.
    Kevin
