Brand new air - No Backlight on keys

Purchased a new macbook Air on the weekend.
backlit keys arent working at all... when i hit F5 and F6 the screen shows the image, but the backlight never comes on.
in settings, the option to automatically illuminate keys in low-light is checked...
any help??

Hi JoeyR,
Yes, in complete Darkness and still won't come on.
The screen dim's in the low light, so i know the sensor is working... i did read something somewhere about resetting the "SMC" http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 i will try this tonight when i get home from work and see if it works...

Your MBP is under warranty, bring the MBA to be fixed at an Apple store genius bar.  Also if you purchased it from Apple and are within 14 days from the purchase date you can have it exchanged.
    Ciao.

  • How can i retrieve my downloads on brand new Air?

How can I retrieve my downloads from Air?

No viruses currently exist for OS X so that is not possible, I'm getting you may be new to OS X and don't know how to locate things. I'd strongly recommend bookmarking and using:

    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#anatomy
    http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
If you need a little tutoring sign up for a free class at your local Apple Store too, they're very useful. Finally you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support, this is mentioned in your owners manual along with the phone number for it. I'd recommend giving them a call.

  • ITunes stuttering on brand new Air i7. ??

Just purchased a new MB Air - i7 8gb RAM 512GB, ran software update and downloaded a few of my iTunes purchases from the cloud / store. Everything stutters and/or breaks up making the music or video unusable. Any ideas on how I can resolve this? I have a 15" MB Pro that has no issues at all with the same version of iTunes. Thanks...

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • My brand new U410 has a keyboard key failed

When I got excited with my new laptop, I've just realise that the "s" key on keyboard had a problem. It's hard to type and seems like more loose than the rest of keys. I want to pull it to reassembly again but dont know how to do. Anyway, is it a good idea to take a risk or just go to warranty service. Because now I stay in Vietnam and service here is terrible and slow. I bought this laptop in US
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This was so Awkward, Zehn. I was so disappointed about that key, you know, press so much imbalance. But when I packed it and put it in back pack, after a day go for working, I came home and turn in on. Bump, everything woks perfectly. I guess the rubber inside the stroke key ( I don't know what it's called) dislocated, however when I moved, it accidentally moved back to the right position, then that's how I "fixed'.. Next time, maybe anyone experienced this problem just rotate laptop to the opposite side.

  • Available HDD space is 40MB only - brand new Air

    Hi
I just got my Air today (80G HDD model) and I found that finder says that space available is only 40M. (not G, but M) When I try software update, the Finder says I need to delete some files...
With activity monitor, they say the used portion is only for 15G but only 40M is available.
With Disk Utility it says 58.2G is available out of 74.2GB.
Is there any one who encountered this similar issue?

    Dear tele_player,
Thanks for your suggestion. The result is the same - WhatSize also thinks whole disk space is only 15G and space is 8M (decreased from 40M as I donwloaded WhatSize) so consistent with what Finder says.
No new finding, no new solution unfortunately.
And what happened was after downloading WhatSize, I tried to reboot, then it keeps on trying to boot up but never reach to Finder, but do self-restart over and over and over again. I needed to force sht down after all. Safeboot does not work either.
So I would not recommend anyone to download anything into this small 40M available space...
I guess I need to run to Apple Store...

  • Brand new iPad Air 2 only charging to 99%?

i have a brand new Air 2 purchased today. Its been on charge since this morning and will only go up to 99% charge... its been like that for the last 4 hours... is this normal? am i doing something wrong? My trusty 4th gen always held full charge. I know its only 1% but dont know if this is a sign of a dodgy battery or something?

Memory effect has nothing to do with it. Calibration of modern batteries is all about the microprocessor control circuit for the battery being accurate. This affects charging and reporting.
    Straight from Apple on 6-25-10
    Products Affected
iBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook, PowerBook, MacBook Air
The battery has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the amount of energy in the battery as it charges and discharges. The battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate and to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. You should perform this procedure when you first use your computer and then every few months after that. If you normally leave your Apple portable computer connected to AC power and very rarely use it on battery power you may want to perform this process once a month. The website www.apple.com/batteries has more helpful information regarding batteries and offers an iCal calendar to remind you to calibrate your battery.

  • Keyboard too slow on brand new Satellite C650-179

I got a brand new C650-179 where I have problems with the keyboard.
    Basic facts:
    Win 7 Home Premium
    4 GB RAM
No software additional software installed yet
My problem is mostly related to the n key but also sometimes d key. If I press n slowly with one sec pause there is no problem, but if press n fast it types n and jumps back one step left and sometimes only jumps one step to the left. Similar thing seems to be with my d character, it radomly types z instead of d.
Do anyone know a possible reason for this behaviour except hardware error?
    Cheers

I am experiencing the same problem with a brand new C650-15L (allthough other keys). My unit just came back from RMA Toshiba, they replaced the keyboard. The RMA sheet indicates the technician did some test and everything should be OK.
But NOTHING is OK! The same problem still persists. I tried a boot CD and the same problem is there, so it is possibly a controller problem.
This is really disappointing RMA service how did they possibly test the unit without noticing that the problem was still there...
I am now trying the battery-out method described above before contacting support once again.

  • Is my MB Air brand new?

If I bought a brand new MB Air, should it have the playlist "kerrys iPhone" in iTunes - I'm wondering if I ended up with a returned/second hand laptop or if this is some type of example?

That's got to be a return.  Did you buy it from an Apple store.  I would think Apple would have put the computer back to factory status, but they shouldn't have sold it as a new unit.
First, IF you bought it from an Apple store as new, take it back and get a new one.  If you bought it somewhere else and you can't exchange it, you should consider restoring the computer to factory settings.
Re iTunes, if it loads with "kerry" signed it, (check upper right hand corner), you should try to deauthorize it by clicking on "store" at the top and selecting deauthorize this computer.
Then reboot holding the command key + R to get to the restore options.  The first thing you want to do is erase the hard disk (option 4).  The recovery partition is protected so you can't screw that up.  After erasing, you will end up back at the recovery menu.  I think it's either option 1 or 2 to restore the OS X system.  When you do, the computer will boot back up as a new MacBook Air.
About a week ago I cleaned my old MBP the same way as above and it worked fine.  Depending on what "erase" option you choose, it could take less than an hour to run this program.  I selected the 7 wipe erase and it took 10 hours or more before the computer was ready to reload OS X.  If you wen this route, since you would be keeping the computer, the mini erase and reload will go very quickly.
I assume this computer has Lion as the OS. If it has an earlier OS, you may need the USB with Snow Leopard.

  • Brand New MacB Air and i haven't been able to get passed the format which has had to be done twice because, I have a French Numeric Keyboard and Language in English.  The minute I type in my password, the keyboard gives me letters that i did NOT type.

I live in Switzerland and can only buy a Mac Air with a French or German keyboard, no chance to buy an English keyboard Mac here,.  When setting up  I chose the French numerique keyboard, although there are two choices French or French numerique.  I put in my language as English.  When all was set up I came to the start page and had to put in my password, by the grace of g....I just happened to see the first letter I typed before it turned into a dot.  My password which was supposed to start with the number 2 showed a french e with accent before it quikly became a dot.
Because of the dot system, this meant that I had no clue what the keyboard was typing as my password ...........and true enough my password was not accepted despite my trying all combinations.  I have had to reformat twice now thanks to Apple Chat and both times my password was not accepted.  I am in the process of formatting it again, this time on my own.  If the Start page does not accept my password again this can only mean that the Mac left the factory with faults.  I could not be more disappointed with the money spent and the time and trouble that Apple Chat and I have spent in trying to correct a brand new out of the box Mac.  I have a cheap Toshiba laptop also with a french keyboard and english language which gave me no trouble at all.  I am not impressed with the so called King of computers!  First of all the dot system is daft.  People want to be able to see and confirm their passwords before they are set for good.  Second,  this problem is going to give me a lot of grief.  Switzerland business is not renowned for its after sales service or the time it takes to do repairs.  When I had an issue with my Vaio laptop which was still under warranty, they kindly picked it up from my house, repaired and promptly returned it.  How's that for good proper service.

i didn't read a lot of your 2nd paragraph, but it seems like the password is the issue, right?
    do a true clean install
reboot your machine and hold down command+option+r, you should see a spinning globe - if you don't see the globe or anything that reads internet recovery, shut down and try again
at menu, chose disk utility and once there, find your HD on the left side, select the physical name and erase it as mac journaled
    exit disk utlity
    at menu, choose install OSX
this time, when it asks for a password just hit continue, it will let you complete without a password
you should be able to get into your laptop, now figure out what password you'll be able to use with your kb issue

  • I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  When I connect my  external monitor it initially provides a nice display - very accurate and  no distortions.  But, within a few minutes the screen begins a incessant series

I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  In turning the Macbook and monitor on, the monitor displays very well, but within a few minutes it begins this incessant blinking (temporary black out of the screen that lasts anywhere from 1-5 seconds).  This has been going on for a long time (it also happended with my older monitor which apparantly I threw out when I should have kept it thinking it was the problem).  From reading various blogs in the Apple support community, this appears to be a widespread problem, but I don't find a solution, only a lot of speculation.  I'm very surprised the Apple folks haven't figured this out.   As a new Apple user, heretofor, I have been very impressed with the support and effort to get fixes out to users.  This, however, has me frustrated to the point of junking my Mac and going back to a PC.  I love the Macbook Air and most of the functionality, but I cannot function without an external monitor. Anybody have any ideas, please help.  Frustrated, Jim

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.
