Brand New DeskTop too slow

Bought a brand new Pavilion (even though the Wal Mart employee advised against it) and I've had nightmares ever since. HP and Norton have decided this is not my computer but theirs. Amazing at how hard it is to work with this without some sort of warning or prompt. Exactly what the WM worker told me. The spyware that HP and Norton uses on customers is scary. This computer supposedly has all sorts of potential but I have had nothing but problems. I hook up my old Dell and it's so fast compared to this. Pages won't load or they take forever. There's a little yellow window at the bottom of the screen that constantly needs monitoring. Almost every time you try to do something you can't because that little window needs to be checked. Then, nothing. I have shut down the web, re-booted so many times. What's involved in returning it so I can change brands?

What is the Model of the System? And what Version of Windows is it running?

  • Brand New MBP Too Slow to Download Updates  :(  Help!

I have a week-old MBP, and Toast.net dial-up with an accelerator. Most things seem to go normally, but when I try to download even one software update it predicts and takes an enormous amount of time! I always get disconnected from the internet way before the download completes. ....aaaarrrgh!
I think my MBP is defective. Or is there something I can do to correct this?
I have even tried leaving the download as the only thing active so I won't lend to slowing it down. And I have gone back and moved something every 20 minutes to keep a disconnect from happening. One important security update said it would take 17 minutes. My laptop predicted 25 hours. I sat there with it for 24 hours and 15 minutes. We only had 45 minutes left. But I got disconnected. Major letdown. What is wrong???

Thank you for your reply. Actually I have been trying to get DSL and I live too much in the boonies out in the desert: there's no DSL out here yet. I am not sure what broadband is. I kind of think it is sort of like satellite dish TV as opposed to cable...???? That they install a dish at your home to connect you? We can't even get cable TV out here. Everyone has satellite dishes.
Actually, I just went to the Final Cut Studio page here on the Apple site, and I can't even watch the video on Final Cut that Apple provides. Is that also the dial-up connection? Even with the accelerator on?

  • My MacBook Pro is brand new but very slow. So disappointing. Why is it starting very slowly?

My Macbook Pro 13' is brand new however, it does not serve me well compared to my old compaq laptop. It is so annoying and disppointing. I am also a new user of Mac than Windows. There's something going on especially when I am to start up my Mac, it takes so long. Very embarrasing even. Plus, I thought of adding a mcaffee anti-virus thinking it will solve any problem but it gotten worse. Nothing so disppointing like Macbook PRO! can't even uninstall completely the anti-virus. Can someone please assist a beginner in Mac like me? Thank you.

  • Brand new WRTP54G EXTREMELY SLOW when WiFi active

I just unpacked and installed a new WRTP54G VoIP WiFi router (Vonage) and got it up and running pretty quickly. However when I join my laptop to the wireless network everything became terribly slow. I watched my ping response times on the directly-attached desktop increase dramatically and actually had ~5% 'Request timed out'. And to complicate things further, this directly attached desktop had a horrbly slow time loading the Linksys mgmt pages- way worse than dialup- almost like the networ was being DOS'ed. I actually plugged in my aircard to send this message.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? I'm running on firmware version 1.00.18.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Arupis,
The equipment is brand new to me so I'm not familiar with how to re-flash the firmware. Can I do this and save my config through the web mgmt interface? I know that Google is my friend but he likes to play more than I'm in the mood for and I often spend more time than I'd like (with 4 kids running around) searching for the correct process.
    Thanks again for your suggestion.

  • Brand new iMac: super slow web browsing

Brand new iMac is super slow while browsing the web.
We have cable internet, and the iMac is connected via ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme router. We have a Windows machine connected to the same router.
The Windows machine loads web pages extremely quickly, the iMac takes 20 seconds to a minute to load anything.
Clearly there is a settings problem on the iMac. No idea what.
    It isn't the router.
    It isn't the broadband connection.
    It isn't the DNS server.
    Please help!

I'm not sure if you understood my original post, however, I will re-iterate it here.
I have several machines connected to the same network.
    MacBook Pro
    Windows machine
    iMac.
Only the iMac exhibits any problems.
Clearly, the ISP is not the issue. The iMac is connected via Ethernet to the same router as the PC.
Clearly the Mac is the problem.
Changing DNS server has no effect.

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook

I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
    1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
    2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days.

  • Brand new Mac Pro slowing down

I have a brand new mac-pro (8 core 2.8ghz,6gb 1x350/2x500gbhd)10.5.5.I have only put about 60gb on start up disk and 200gb on my HD 1.I already get the spinning ball when i open up some app's and to send a email (say 10 words nothing else)takes 10-15 secs to send,my broadband is up to 10mb.This is connected cable no wifi.I also have to quit force programs (they just freeze)and then it doesn;t quit force, can't do nothing.I HAXE ONLY USED THIS 4 TIMES.

    The hatter,
Thank you for the history of the posts here.
I might add, Dano, your experience is actually quite unusual. In fact your mileage can be much worse on a PC. Viruses can wipe out ALL your data in an instant on a PC, while not on a Mac. Mac users at worse if there is something unstable usually only lose data if there is some hardware or software issue. So backing up your data is a prerequisite for owning any kind of computer.
Your experience with numerous spinning beachballs usually is indicative of faulty RAM, an overfull hard drive (which you obviously don't have), a directory issue* (which may happen if you don't know how to shut down your machine, or are using the wrong utilities to diagnose your machine), or some other hardware problem that can be sometimes diagnosed via the hardware test discs that came with your machine as indicated here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
That lack of an error does not mean your RAM is healthy, it merely means the error is undetectable.
Secondly, if your version of Protools is too old, it will not run on a Mac Pro natively, so you have to make sure you are using the latest Protools. If your plugins are too old the same issue.
Third, if your software won't download fully, it usually is an indication that either your network is not setup properly, or your network preferences in your Mac is not setup properly. Some have found that by increasing the MTU they can make the networking work more smoothly. Some have found that by using an Open DNS they have less issues, as described on http://www.opendns.org/
So before you blame stuff on Apple lets get to the bottom of what's wrong with your machine.

  • Brand New Macbook Being Slow and Loud

Every time I start up my macbook pro it runs really slow and the fan is really loud. When I looked in the activity monitor it said kernel_task is using up 300 % of the CPU. What is kernel_task and is there a way to slow it down?

Is this  BRAND NEW Mac? Or one you are calling Brand New (Big difference).
If it is Brand New, like you bought it yesterday or a few days ago take it back and get a full refund and buy another that works correctly right out of the box.
But I suspect it is a few weeks/months old, which makes it NOT brand new. So if that is the case then you need to reset the SMC and PRAM.
Do a google search for how to do that.

  • Brand new laptop: Incredibly slow and laggy.

    Hi,
My mum received a brand new laptop on Saturday (this exact laptop) it hasnt been overly used as yet but the laptop seems very VERY slow. Browsers take a good while to open, sites like Facebook take ages to load - Farmville 2 for example takes an age to load and even when it does its very laggy.
Why is this band new laptop so slow? Nothing has been installed on it other than Firefox and the spec of the laptop seems pretty reasonable. Windows 8 is horrible but thats another issue.
Can anyone help or give any advice?

Do you open farmville from the laptop or from the internet? Have you checked the speed of your LAN or wireless?
Which are you using wireless or LAN NIC?
When you open application on the laptop is it slow?
Trying to determine if it is the connectivity is slow or if it is your laptop.
Also what version of AMD Catalyst are you using?
Here are some things you can do to make sure you are fully updated.
Make sure you have the most current .NET Framework 4.0
Make sure you have the most current DirectX 11.2
Make sure all of the other Microsoft Updates are complete as well. Missing Updates can cause issues.
Uninstall the AMD Catalyst you have now, before installing the Beta version.
I know most are trying to use the AMD Catalyst 13.9, which is used Windows 8 64-bit.
The AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta9.2 Driver can be downloaded from either of these two links:

  • Why is my brand new iMac so slow?

    Hi,
I bought my iMac about four months ago. Never had a Mac before and I'd been looking foreward to it
    for a long time!
    Specs: iMac 27" | OS X 10.6.8 | quad core | 2.7GHz | 4 gig ram | 1 TB disk | 1333 MHz | DDR3
Very early it striked me how slow this machine was! Starting and rebooting is insanely quick, but
that's about it! I work in Photoshop, and it is just horrible. It crashes all the time! I am used to work
with several layers, I can't do that here. Because it's sooo slow...
I also work in a 3D program called ArchiCad and this is even worse! I've had to teach myself a
slower workflow to prevent it from crashing. I hate it...
If both Photoshop and ArchiCad is open at the same time, the Mac crashes VERY fast. I have to force quit app's
and reboot the Mac often. Sometimes several times in one day.
I see this little circus wheel all the time and it's driving me nuts!
Sometimes the Mac just crashes without having lots of apps open. I might have a couple of browsers open,
a word document, finder and a priview. And it crashes!
And I have to do the eternal job of force quitting and trying to tell the Mac to reboot. This often takes a while.
The Mac is full of small problems also.
    - I have to install the magic mouse all the time! It just gets lost and I have to use my track pad
to search for it. Even though the batteries are new. Sometimes this only happends once every
second week, sometimes it happens 15 times a' day.
    - Sometimes I can flip between pages in web browsers by swiping with the mouse, sometimes I can't.
Sometimes I can do this when working with folders, sometimes I can't.
    - I often have problems with Java.
    - The web browser Opera crashes all the time. Can't use it.
    - Sometimes, videos from f.eks youtube can't play.
    - Just opening a photo in preview can take 10 seconds! Not allways, but sometimes.
    - Using cover flow with images is useless. It uses so much time to preview the photos with good quality.
You might wonder, what have this dude done to his Mac?
I have installed Photoshop, ArchiCad, Chrome, Opera and a small app for browsing an old iPod touch.
    That's it!
Since I'm a photographer I've also put a lot of photos here, but not more than perfaps 100GB. Max!
I am very, very carefull with what kind of websites I visit. I never visit a website I don't trust.
I don't download anything (movies, games etc). Everything I have is original. No pirate.
So I brought it wth me to my local apple store. They thought it was a problem with the disc.
After being without the Mac for a week they told me nothing was wrong with it. It was perfect they said!
My jaw dropped all the way to the floor.
All they could say was that I could format and reinstall the intire system and/or upgrade to 8BG ram.
Do you guys think this will help? Why should I reinstall? I can't understand how I could've screeved the system up!
And really? I should use MORE money and upgrade to 8gb Ram? My previous 2gb Ram PC was so much faster! Is this necessary?
I hope someone can give me any advice.
I feel lost. This is by far the worst purchase I've ever done. I hate my Mac...

    Well,
To start Dan, you are using quite a few CPU, GPU, RAM and HD intensive apps.
4 GBs of RAM isn,t going to cut it. 8 GBs isn't going to cut it! Not at all! 4 GBs Of RAM is the base (read minimal ) RAM the iMac model you bought comes with. It doesn't mean it's enough to run lots of Applications. Epecially processor intense applications you're trying to run!
Every re-iteration of OS X uses more and more CPU, GPU, RAM and HD resources.
OS X, BY ITSELF, needs between 2-4 GBs of RAM just to do its things smoothly.
Using Photoshop alone needs oodles of CPU, GPU, RAM and HD space for scratch disks.
If you are a seasoned Photoshop/Adobe user, you should already know this fact!
ArchiCad is another, CPU, GPU and RAM heavy app.
You have various browsers, email, word documents open simultaneously? Really?
More than one web browser open? Web Browsers also eat up lots CPU and GPU cycles and RAM!
The thing that eats up CPU, GPU and RAM cycles with web browsers is Adobe Flash and to some extent Java.
You're trying to run all these thing on very little to no RAM horsepower!!!
You're asking your iMac to run all these heavy processing apps with no additonal RAM available to do so.
As you've discovered, this is not working.
You're probably getting a lot of page in/outs and virtual memory swapping between real RAM and the hard drive.
You need to install, AT THE VERY LEAST, 12 GBs of RAM! I would just install 16 GBs of RAM and be done.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM, but this, I think maybe overkill. Try your system with 16 GBs first.
I have a 2009 27 inch iMac with 16 GBs of RAM running CAD and Adobe CS 3 and Blender 3D and other processor intensive apps with very little issues.
Buy reliable RAM from online sellers Crucial memory or OWC.
As wise advice from me, if you want to experience a smooth and productive Mac experience, do not upgrade your iMac to 10.7 or 10.8.
10.6.8 Snow Leopard is the last "real" version of the previous Mac OS X versions that many of us still love and use. Newer versions of the OS, basically, still have many issues and turn your iMac into a giant iPod, iPHone or iPad., Instead  of being a fully customizable and reliable OS.
The magic mouse is really a crppy mouse to use with drawing and painting applications like we both use.
Ditch it and purchase either the old RF style Mac compatible wireless laser mice or purchase a wired mouse.
These mice are more accurate pointing and tracking devices.
Look at Mac compatible mice models from Microsoft, Logitech, Kensington or Apple
The battery life of the magic mouse is just poor, also.  Its tracking is poor for fine mouse movements, too!
Does your wireless trackpad work any better? Is it better on baterries? Do you get fine control using it?
If the trackpad is better, than just ditch the magic mouse all together.
If the trackpad give you trouble, too, ditch it for a more accurate mouse, trackball or trackpad from another manufacturer other than Apple. Again, Mac compatible trackpads from Microsoft, Logitech and Kensington.

  • Brand New MacBook Graphics Slower Than Year Older Model!

    Hi,
Are the new late 2007 MacBooks supposed to have slower graphics than the previous year's models? If I try to run the new Leopard Arabesque screen saver on a 2007 MacBook with a Intel GMA X3100 graphics chip, the animation is jerky and stroboscopic. However if I try Arabesque on a year old MacBook, the animation is smooth and fluid.
Is this a fault with the particular 2007 MacBook I've tested, or are they all like this?

It's very interesting as most users never notice the difference, just those that actually push their equipment a little.
As with most issues like this I would invite you to open a ticket in the [Apple Bug Reporting System|http://bugreport.apple.com> so that Apple can add your information to their impact report and get this fixed quicker.
    Hope this helps! 

It is important to mention the exact model number. Also, it would be helpful if you mentioned is the slowness relative to static (non-internet), or when on the internet (DSL, Cable, and reported bandwidth speed).

I do not understand how can it be so slow, and block all the time.
it seems worse than my firs i book.

I've bought a macbook pro 2go i7 15", less than 1 month ago, and if i open for an example, the imovie, and the i photo, the firefox at the same time, it blocks, and stay thinking for a long time, it is slow, and boring to have it. normaly my old ones use to work well, and that's why i kept with apple. i love it, but this time, it is really blocking all the time, and slow, really slow. making a lot of sound of fan. it's horrible.

  • New iMac too  slow to use Word - can it be fixed or should I get my money back ?

Just bought an iMac to replace my PC and find that it cannot run Word 2011.
Even the most basic things -such as transforming key strokes into text on screen take seconds.  Formatting takes an age.
I see numerous other postings with the same problem - but no solutions - only other 'users'  saying that they have no problem.
It seems to me that this is such a serious defect that the computer is not actually fit for purpose.  Before I take it back to the shop and ask for it to be replaced  has anyone out there got a solution. ?
    thanks in advance

The only sultion is to Wipe the drive and reinstall Mt Lion as sometimes the factory install isn't right.
But in the end you should not have to do that on a NEW system. So If it were me I'd take it back for a refund and either get another or something else.
