Brand new DVD "skips over damaged area"

Hello there....So I shot hdv, edited in native hdv 1080i60, used compressor to make a best quality 150 min ac3 and m2v, and used dvdsp to format, and disk utility to burn the image. But right when it finishes burning, and I play it in DVD Player, around 30 min in, it skips and freezes. The image plays fine but the dvd doesn't. The dvds are sony dvd+r. Bad dvds? All my software is up to date and i'm using a hv30 and lacie 7200 external firewire 400 drive.

Could be a bad disc. Try another set of quality media and see if it works. Also bitrates are important too. what were your settings?

  • Burned DVDs Skipping over damaged area

My C2D 1,83GHz Mac mini (10.5.2) has problems with burned DVD movies. Both DVD Player and VLC will crash or give an error at some point: *Skipping over damaged area*. VLC will just crash and DVD Player will hang, you can´t pause or rewind.
The movies will play just fine on a standalone DVD Player. Commercial DVDs (not copied) will work just fine also. I´ve been using Verbatim DVD-R dics and the same movies play just fine in my PowerBook G4 and my MacBook Pro. I just got a movie from a friend on a TDK disc and that disc did not cause any probelms on the mini. What could be the problem? Is there a problem with the drive? I´ve tried burning the discs on 3 different Macs but that doesn´t seem to make a difference.

I can't help but wonder if this is an issue relating to whatever means has been used to burn the movies rather than the drive or the discs - particularly since commercial DVDs play properly.
It may be, for example, that the software used to rip or duplicate the originals has mis-read the original due to copy protection, and the disc is therefore not copied fully.

  • Dvd skipping over damaged area

    Hi,
This is in reference to a MacBook Pro DVD issue:
    13-inch, Early 2011
    Processor: 2.3Ghz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
After inserting the Prometheus DVD disk I get the message right away: "Skipping over Damaged area"
When I put the same disk on another PC or DVD player the DVD plays without issues. I also tried other DVDs on this MBP and they play without issues. Is there any known issue or fix for this problem?
    Thank you,
    Christopher

    Get a replacement disc.

  • Movie-DVDs "skipping over damaged area" all the time

I just wanted to share this with you to see whether others suffer the same problems before calling AppleCare.
I have a 20" 2,4 GHz iMac (Alu/Intel) which quite often gets a hickup when watching a DVD. Many times DVD player is claiming to skip over a damaged area. In fact, this only happens when the computer has been running for a while and gets quite warm and it obviously has nothing to do with the DVD media but with the iMac hardware as I can play these DVDs without a problem on a freshly booted iBook as well as on any DVD player.
Do you suffer the same? I find this rather underwhelming for a computer that costs 1500$ or more.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • HT2499 I inserted a brand new DVD and it quit half way through and gave me the "skipping over damaged area" message.

I got this laptop refurbished from Apple in July. It was originally released in October 2011. I have watched DVD's on it previously, but lately, in the past 3 weeks, it's been pooping up the "skipping over damaged area" message. I put in a brand new DVD and half way through, it did it again, and I can't get past it. Any thoughts on what the problem may be?

You can just open Terminal (in Utilities) and run the rm command (make sure you type it exactly) and then reboot.  With /.AppleSetupDone gone the system will think it is the the second part of an installation, i.e., after it installs and reboots and starts the Setup Assistant.  You will see the Welcome and music all over again and then you can go through the setup prompts again, this time specifying a password.

  • DVD player say's it's skipping over damaged area when dvd is fine

I have a problem playing box sets from abc studios on my Macbook Pro. They play perfectly well through the trailers and set up but as soon as I select play all or select an episode, they stop and I either get the error message "skipping over damaged area" before they hang or they just hang straight away. This has happened with four different box sets so far. The DVDs are fine and undamaged.

We have had the same problem ever since we bought our machine 60 days ago... Here's where we are: DVDs, even brand new ones, skip - "skipping over damaged area" on our iMac while our MBP and MB play them flawlessly. There is no loss in the movie, only the pause in play.
Our software is up to date, we took it into Apple over three trips: 1.) had them clean our dvd drive, 2.) problem persisted so we replaced the dvd drive, 3.) problem persisted so we wiped out our entire hard drive and did a software re-install and update... and problem still persists! We are are packing it up for a fourth time and will take it into Apple to have them replace the machine or all the parts...
We're bummed, it's our 3rd Apple computer and the 'biggest' and yet it cannot do the simple things? We'll keep you posted as to what happens.

  • DVD Player "skipping over damaged area"

My macbook has worked wonderfully for a year now. But as of late when I rent DVD's from blockbuster or family video some won't read very well. I always clean the DVD's before I play them and the ones that are having issues are the ones that look very very clean. It does the whole "skipping over damaged area" thing. It's rather frustrating. And the disks are in very good shape. It doesn't do it all the time. But now it's starting to become more frequent. It'll skip a few seconds sometimes and sometimes a whole scene. Any thoughts? I think I'm literally 3 days past my warranty.
    Thanks

Possibly a failing optical drive. Bring the computer to an Apple store as soon as possible, explain the issue, and see what the folks there have to say.

  • Skipping over damaged area??? Help!

My DVD player does not play DVDs correctly! Moments after i put in the dvd a message will come up on the player saying "Skipping over damaged area".... But here is the thing... These dvds arent damaged! They are new!
Please someone from Apple or anybody who knows what is going on.... please help.

    Hi benrmay18,
Unfortunately, this is a user-to-user discussion board so no one from Apple is going to respond directly to your inquiry. Do all DVDs give you this error message or only specific ones? Have you tried movie DVDs or data DVDs?
If ALL DVDs are giving you this error message it's probably worth bringing the machine into an AASP or Genius Bar for additional diagnosis. It's possible that the drive (or the laser in the drive) is the problem.

  • "skipping over damaged area" on DVD player

I keep getting this message while trying to play DVD's. Is this a problem with the drive or with Leopard?

  • DVD Player "skipping over damaged section" error message after long pauses

On both Imac or macbook (both 10.6.7), when watching a DVD using DVD Player, if I pause a DVD for a while and come back to the application after a few minutes, after click play, I get an error message "Skipping over damaged section" and the dvd skips forward some 30 seconds. I know this has nothing to do with the disk itself (it is not damaged).

I'm also experiencing this on an iMac running 10.6.8.

  • Using an early 2011 15 inch macbook pro to watch a rented dvd. the screen displayed a skipping over damaged section message, then the dvd froze. first unable to eject the dvd, now it can't be inserted. Hardware prblm? reset the superdrive?

I was viewing a rented dvd when a "skipping damaged area" message was shown and then the dvd froze. At first I was unable to eject the dvd with the eject botton though the superdrive made "ejecting" noises, and followed the cue "finder using dvd" and ejected it. Now the drive will not accept any dvds. Does this sound like a hardaware problem, or is it possible that some sort of "reset" needs to take place?

Before wasting your time heading to your local Apple Store, try resetting your SMC.  It doesn't work all the time, but sometimes it's just the thing to save you time.

  • Brand New DVD+R's eject.

I bought some brand new Memorex DVD+R's 4.7 GB and my Macbook ejects them.
I can watch movies, play CDs, etc. But I really don't want to keep buying DVDs until I find one that works. I think this is something to actually pursue under warranty, but has anyone solved a similar problem?

To reply to myself, maybe the "combo drive" doesn't burn DVD's? I can't remember - does anyone else remember? (The MacBook marketing info doesn't say "combo drive: burns CDS but not DVDs" - it was some kind of subtle thing I had to ask about over and over in the store in person.)

  • I have messed my MacBook Pro attempting to customize it. I am far from savvy with technology and I would like to erase and reset it to out of the box brand new and start over

    Polly,
usually there are multiple models of MacBook Pro per model number, but in the case of your model number (A1502), there’s currently only one model for that model number: 13-inch Late 2013.
To reset your MacBook Pro, you’ll need to boot into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as you start it up. When the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk (most likely the top item of the list). On the right-hand side, select the Erase tab. For the Format dropdown, select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. For the Name input box, “Macintosh HD” has traditionally been the default name — I don’t know if that’s still the case for the Late 2013 models. After that, press the Erase… button, and erase its entire internal disk. When it’s finished with the erasure, exit Disk Utility, and select Shut Down from the Apple menu. When you start it up again, OS X Internet Recovery will redownload Mavericks from Apple’s servers and reïnstall it on your internal disk. Once it has reïnstalled, run Software Update to get it up to date, and adjust the System Preferences to your taste.

  • Brand new ipod cracked. no damage to case...

So what gives here, I've owned several ipods, starting at the beginning with the 5g, a couple of weeks after they came out.
So my wife buys me a black 60g G5 ipod, engraved, for our anniversary, and I pick it up after having it at work with me for the last 2 days, not being used at all, and the lcd is obviously damaged. I didn't do anything to this ipod. I babied it. I kept it in the sleeve so the ridiculously soft plastic wouldn't get scratched. I kept it there all the time. So how does this happen?
I have applecare. I immediately register it. Then I go to the ipod site to make a service ticket online. I then see that lcd damage is specifically excluded from the warranty, including from applecare.
It's 7:30 mst here, so the apple service line is closed for the evening.
I'm so bummed now, I can't believe it.
Before this gets locked or deleted, I might just mention that I'm a stockholder...
I will call first thing in the morning, my 18 month old will see to that.

Called Apple, they are exchanging it.
I read about a liberal exchange policy regarding G5 iPods, I guess they aren't kidding.
Now i need to look for some BOMBER protection for the replacement.
Well done Apple, except for making this iPod so ridiculously thin.
I'd rather have one as thick as my g4 60g photo iPod and have it be as tough as that one to boot.
The way people use their iPods, they need to be durable to be a portable appliance. I'm glad I have my old 60g iPod photo around to use in day to day activities.
I'm not sure if I can take the new one snowboarding, etc.
All in all a positive experience nonetheless.

  • Skipping Over Damamged Area..Burning problem..

    Hi
I created a project using DVD Sp 4..a very simple project, one track plus a very short intro .. the menu consists of only three options..I build it and it plays fine on DVD Player on the Mac.
The problem occurs when I format the project onto a blank DVD. When I try playing the DVD on the MAC DVD player comes up with "Skipping Damamged Area", and the menu buttons won't work..I have yet to try it on a standard DVD player..just wondered if anyone had come across this before?
I have tried several different disks..I ahve tried using Disk utility to create an image and burning from there..all to no avail..any suggestions?
    thanks
    Mike

I would try a small 30 second test using the same clip compressed at half the data rate you previously used
if of any use, this is my workflow:
    - from FCP timeline send the project direct to Compressor and create M2V and AC3 files
    - import the files to DVDSP
    - add the menus and tracks and create links
    - put a still frame of black created in Photoshop in a video track and set this as first play with an end jumps to the menu or a video track, (many players dont play if a menu is first play)
    - create a Build from DVDSP to the desktop
    - play this in Apple DVD player to test functionality
    - import the two folders into Toast to burn the disc at 1 x speed
