Brand new fan problem on an old machine

My iMac G5 is a year old and when I got it, many people were talking about how noisy the fan was. I've been lucky for a year that mine has been absolutely silent. The only time the fans ran was when booting off a CD-ROM or when it reached 90 degrees in my office.
Now, for no apparent reason, the fan starts up after the computer has been on for a while. I am not using the CD drive at all, I'm not running any programs other than IM, mail, and browser (as usual), and it's not hot in here. If I shut down for a while and then start up again, it's quiet for an hour or so and then the fan starts.
Is this normal wear and tear? Does something need to be replaced? Any info would be appreciated.

Hello Magrite,
I have just picked up my Imac (first generation) from the certified Apple repair center and was very disappointed when the fan noise I had brought her in for seemed worse. The replaced the CPU fans and nothing changed. The computer still has a loud buzzing sound that is very aggravating. I have had this problem since I received my IMac but finally got fedup. So it would appear that I have to send her back so that they can keep testing her out.
If they find the cause I will relay the message.
Best of luck
Stephanie

  • My brand new iPod classic is dropping old songs when I sync new ones. How do I fix this?

I have a brand new, less then a month old iPod classic. This is my second one as there first one I bought was defective and couldn't be recognized by my computer. This new one isn't without it's glitches. I had 465 songs on it and went to sync some songs, and videos I'd bought from itunes, I synced and unplugged my ipod. Itunes shows 488 items in my library and ipod shows 178. What's going on and how do I fix this?

What you are hearing is the sound of the iPod's internal hard drive spinning up to read data from disk for playback. So basically, what you are hearing is completely normal for the iPod Classic. If you still feel that it is unusually loud, find another person with an iPod Classic and compare them. If your iPod is louder, it could be signs of a faulty/damage drive, but don't be sure quick to jump to conclusions.

  • Printing wirelessly with a brand new MacBook Pro and an old G4 Titanium

I have a brand new MacBook Pro set up to print wirelessly and it is working wonderfully.
The problem is my other laptop that is on 10.3.9 is not finding the printer at all. I have all the drivers needed but can not figure out what else I need to do to make this happen. I thought it might be an issue of one computer using Bonjour and one using rendezvous. Is there a way I can have both operating systems talk to the same printer on my AE network?
    Please help!
    Brian

Make sure you have "authorized your New MAC" to do this if you haven't in iTunes click on "Store" then "Authorize this computer"
If thats good then there are a couple of options, First would be, Connect your iPod, Cancel the Sync when it appears. Click on "File" then "Transfer purchase from iPod"
Option 2 would be create a backup of your iTunes library on your old computer, may take a couple of CD's to do so, all depends on the size of your library. Then simply restore it on the MAC.
Option 3 (My preferred option) if your old computer is on the same network, turn on Home Sharing on both the Old and New iTunes and simply drag the music you want right on over.
Very important though that the new itunes be authorized first for any of those to work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Brand new Mac user with a brand new Mac problem!

    Hi Everyone --
I am a brand new Mac user... I've only had my MacBook Pro 13" for three days. My Mac has been continuously freezing while I use it. When it freezes I only have safari running so I know its not from application "overload". Once frozen, I cannot move the mouse, "esc" or use any commands. Essentially my only option is to force it to shut down by holding the power buttong down. Please let me know if anyone has any idea how to fix this! With school coming up I cannot afford for my computer to be freezing every 20 minutes!
    Thanks in advance.
    -Rachel

Well... I'd still take it back - let them know that you received it as a gift three days ago. They may still replace it for you or they may take it in for repair. Just be nice and explain that you don't expect a new MBP to function as it is (or malfunction) and let them, at least, run diagnostics on it. As it's so new, there may be something simple that they can fix as you wait. Did your boyfriend already register the machine with Apple or did you? They may take the registration date into account...
But I'd take it to the Apple Store, regardless...

  • New MacBook Pro, migrated from old machine, iphone not recognized

I just got a new MBP and everything seems to have transferred over just fine except iTunes doesn't recognize either my iPhone or my iPad when plugged in. I have deauthorized the old computer and authorized the new one, the backups from yesterday on the old machine show up under preferences > devices. The only real difference between the 2 machines is the one was on Leopard and the new one is Snow Leopard! Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Brand-new 2TB WD external for time machine

Hi, all, and thanks for the help in advance.
I've got a 1-month old iMac backing up currently to a 500GB external, which I am planning to replace with this new 2TB drive. It is going to connect via firewire, and I am planning to use the whole thing just for time machine.
    A couple of questions:
    1) I've never had a drive this big, and was planning just a single partition - are there strong reasons why I shouldn't do that?
    2) This drive is "supposed" to be ready for Mac use, but I have no confidence, and all the info is pre-loaded on the drive. Once I plug it in, can I just go through the standard disk utility steps to reformat/ repartition?
    3) Have others used the large MyBook drives in this fashion? I'm batting 50% currently on bringing over my 500GB drives from the PC and really need this new one to work more smoothly.

Apple sells MyBook drives at the Apple Store, so they must work, at least most of the time.
I would also look at some options from a Mac-specialist vendor, such as OWC.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/
    (1) If you need the full 2TB size for the Time Machine backup volume, then it should be one big partition. If you only need about 1.5TB for Time Machine, it may be useful to have a separate partition (volume) for general storage use or as scratch space. Note: You can use the Time Machine volume for storing other files and folders.
    (2) Mac-ready just means it is pre-formatted for Mac, using +Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)+. A drive that is formatted for Windows can be made Mac-ready by using the Partition tab in Disk Utility.
Once I plug it in, can I just go through the standard disk utility steps to reformat/ repartition?
Yes, with one exception - if this drive is a RAID that uses two 1TB drives.
If it is a normal single drive external drive, just go to Partition tab in Disk Utility. Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to the desired number of partitions. Click on the Options button to make sure +GUID Partition Table+ is selected. Back on the main window, name the volumes and set their format to +Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)+. Apply the change. It should take less than one minute.
If you are having issues with one of your PC-formatted drives, and you did not do all the steps noted above, you should try it again.
    (3) As I mentioned, I have seen these WD MyBook drives (versions that come with Mac formatting) being sold at the Apple Store, so Apple must have tested them. For a FireWire drive, I tend to trust the Mac-oriented vendors more (OWC, LaCie, Macally, etc.). For USB 2.0 drives, just about any drive should work fine with a Mac.

  • Bunch of brand new mail problems

Mail has worked great from day 1 (6/29) until two days ago. I have been getting a fairly constant progress indicator at the bottom of the screen "Sending x of 24" while the iPhone apparently is sending something. When it completes, it signals with the sent mail sound and then at some point may start "Sending x of 17" and the process starts again. I am also getting regular, but not constant, error messages about SMTP server failures with my .Mac account, Earthlink account, and corporate IMAP account. Yet, I had nothing in my Outbox and nothing new has shown up in any of the Sent Mail folders.
I turned on Airplane Mode to stop the apparent SMTP connections, but the "Sending x of y" indicator continues at the bottom with the little activity indicator next to the airplane icon spinning happily away. When it is done sending, again the sent mail sound plays. Is it really still connected in airplane mode?
I have power cycled the phone and while in airplane mode decided to try sending two emails through my Earthlink account. The first one was entered but never showed up in the Outbox and not in my account to which I sent it. Message two is still there and the Outbox reads as (-6) messages! Going to the Inbox now states 4294967290 Unsent Messages. Obviously an unsigned long is being used to keep track of the outbox message count.
So, I just turned off airplane mode and received two copies of each of the test messages I sent. And the "Sending x of 16" is now active again with only 4294967288 Unsent Messages.
    The recent update was applied.

It sure sounds like something funny is going on. I have come to believe that the mail account configuration is susceptible to some sort of corruption. There have been too many examples of "weird" behavior that is fixed when the accounts are deleted and recreated.
I would recommend deleting your mail accounts and recreating them, and see if the problem persists.

  • Brand new earphones problem

Got a new pair of earphones in the mail along with the iphone 5s a few weeks ago... and I accidentally left them in a shirt pocket and did laundry
The right earphone no longer plays sound and the bass is completely gone. I have not tried the mic yet but I am certain there is damage on that as well. I do not have the receipt for my 5s purchase. Is there anything I can do? I love these earphones... they are the perfect snug fit and synergized so well with my 5s

try the headset in a computer or any other type of device that has a 3.5mm minijack connector
and or try another headset which has a 3.5mm minijack connector in the phone
3.5mm minijack connector has been a std for headset connectors since the 1980's so it's pretty common

  • Kernel Panic in Brand New (replacement) Early-2013 rMBP

    Hello all,
I recently had to have my 4 month old rMBP replaced because of a weird sleep/wake/shutdown flashing screen issue.  They tried to repair the old machine 4 times and eventually just replaced it.
I have been using the brand new out of the box replacement machine for about 2 days now and just experienced a kernel panic.  This happened when I woke the Mac up from sleep.  I tried to wake it up via the keyboard, but that didn't work, so I hit the power button.  When it woke up, it showed the Safari window I was on before it went to sleep and then, abruptly gave me the "Your machine was shut down bc of a problem" dialogue box.  When I hit the restart option, the kernel panic screen (grey screen written in about 8 different languages) popped up.
Because of the bad luck I have been experiencing lately, my first instinct is to take it back to the store and exchange it for a new one (since I am within the 14 day window).  Now I'm nervous about this particular configuration (having had two machines with issues already), so my other thought was to take it to the store and exchange it for the new model, which obviously has different SSD and processor.  Honestly, I was very happy with this model until these recent problems, and I am afraid that exchanging for a new model will look like I am experiencing tech envy or something.  The reality is, however, that I just want a Mac that works, just like all of the other Macs I've had in the past.
What are your opinions?  Any advice? I have the kernel panic log, if that would be helpful.
    Thanks a ton,
    Kelly

Kernel panics are hardware problems.  Return the MBP while you are still with-in your 14 days of no questions asked period.

  • Pairing with brand new 2008 bluetooth keyboard, Boot Camp 2.0

I have a very simple question. I've searched the forums and seen a lot of information about older versions of Boot Camp, old drivers, and a lot of problems. However, none of these answers have really helped.
I have a brand new Bluetooth keyboard - brand new, as in bought it last week.
I have a relatively new MacBook Pro. Relatively new, as in bought it six months ago.
The Bluetooth keyboard works stunningly well under OS X 10.5.4. I'm using it right now. It works. I don't want that to stop.
So the question: can I have the keyboard work under BOTH Windows XP (under boot camp) AND OS X?
I did try to see if I could make it work....
    1. Reboot under XP (boot camp whatever the latest version is, I installed boot camp two weeks ago).
    2. Select Control Panel - Bluetooth Devices
    3. Check the box
    4. Press button on right side of keyboard
    5. Quickly press "next" button.
The first time I did this, the keyboard came up in the dialog box. It then asked me for a pass key, which I typed on my laptop's keyboard. I then tried typing the same pass key (my phone #) on the bluetooth keyboard and pressing Enter. The dialog box closed.
The keyboard did not work. At all.
Rebooted Windows. Keyboard still did not work. "Did not work" means did not register any key presses at all in the Notepad application.
The second time I tried steps 1-5 I got a different result. Instead of listing my keyboard, the Bluetooth wizard couldn't find a keyboard, or any nearby bluetooth devices.
So, if I 'un pair' the keyboard under OS X, and then 're pair' the keyboard under Windows, will I then need to 'un pair' the keyboard under Windows and then 're pair' it under OS X to make it work?

I paired my brand new Bluetooth keyboard (3 days old) with both the OSX and WinXP sides of my Mac Pro without a problem. I did OSX first and then Windows. On the Windows side it displayed a passkey but never gave me a chance to enter it on the keyboard. It just moved on to the next dialog screen and from then on it worked.

If the machine is brand new (less than 90 days old) or if you have already bought AppleCare you should call them. You can call them M-Saturday during business hours for some help.
If neither apply please write a more descriptive post outlining exactly what you are trying to do and the steps you have taken so far. The way your current post is written its difficult to figure anything out. Please remember we're just volunteers here and we can't read your mind or see what you have done.
