Brand new final cut pro user having trouble with .mpg files

Hi everybody,
i am brand new to editing on my iMac and final cut pro, so i will apologize now for any questions that seem really dumb. i am trying to bring in some .mpg files into a project and only the video will come in, no audio...when i play the files in quicktime player by themselves, they play just fine. i tried to export the files to quicktime movie files via the quicktime player (i don't have quicktime pro) and then those files played the video but no audio...not sure what to do..please help.
thanks,
svmc

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos; more information on this issue is available in this article.

  • Brand new Final Cut Pro freezes

I've installed Final Cut Pro 7 (Academic Edition) on my Macbook Pro 15" with 500 gig memory and running the latest version of Snow Leopard. I haven't even used it yet because I don't have a camera, but getting bored I downloaded a Youtube video of a hummingbird and saved it as a Mpeg4. Once in Final Cut, I dragged it to my canvas and then down to my sequence and a pop up told me that the clip had different clip setting than the sequence and then it asked me if I wanted to change the setting according to the clip. I did so and then color-corrected the footage (which was only thirty seconds long) and it took FIVE minutes for it to render. I understand that it is an HD video, so I wasn't TOO put off by that, but then, once it finished rendering, I wanted to drag my canvas out bigger, so I did so, and it IMMEDIATELY started freezing. The umbrella of death started spinning for atleast five minutes all because I wanted to make the viewer bigger??? That shouldn't be a problem. I eventually had to Hard Reset my entire computer and I opened it again, did the same thing, and the same thing happened. (Also, I'm positive it's Final Cut, only, because the rest of my computer was running perfectly fine). Eventually, I tried to color-correct the clip down on my sequence without changing the clip settings (which resulted in TERRIBLE quality video) and it didn't really freeze as much.
    HELP!

You downloaded a clip from YouTube, and took it...in a non-editing codec)...into FCP, and are trying to edit it...and are complaining that FCP doesn't work?
You are using it wrong. You are doing absolutely everything wrong. This is not what you do. FCP doesn't just work with any old Quicktime file you import into it. It is a professional editing application that works with certain editing codecs and camera formats.
Best wait until you get a camera, or someone who shot footage for you with a camera, to start using it.

  • I just updated to new final cut pro x 10.1.1 and i am also on mavericks so but on my editing timeline i was trying to color grade using magic bullet looks but i am having problem with it. when it comes back to tcp x it's black.

I just updated to the new final cut pro x 10.1.1 and i am also on mavericks so but on my editing timeline i was trying to color grade using magic bullet looks but i am having problem with it. When i send a sample to MBL and color grade it , it comes back to final cut pro x all black even after render. By the way on the MBL i am using the GPU rendering, I used before like 4months ago and it was fine. And i don't like to use the CPU because it very slow.

What is the frame rate of the project? At what frame rate was the media recorded? What frame size?
    What are the audio settings?
What are the specs of the machine, in particular how much RAM, how is the hard drive connected, etc.?
If possible, post screenshots of the inspector for the project.
It could be related to the audio frequency?

  • What happens to Apple Color users with the new Final Cut Pro x

What happens to Apple Color users with the new Final Cut Pro x?

Some of the functions of Color have been incorporated into FCP X, meaning you will have more than the 3-Way-Color-Corrector but less than Color.
Since you cannot share projects between FCP and FCP X, you might want to stay with FCS if you rely on Color.

Well, when I start working (should I say try to work with FCPX, activity monitor in the %processor column for FCPX jumps rapidly over 100% and reaches more than 200% ??? What the **** is that ?
200% or more is not strange. Remember that your mac has 4 cores (you say it's 3 months old, so I assume it is a new model), so 200% amounts to using 2 of these 4 cores to the max.
Regarding the question of creating a new admin user: while it sits in the same system, it may help if the problem is caused by some user-specific preferences or settings. Not likely in your case, since you seem to have reinstalled from scratch, but still it is worth a try. It takes 5 minutes and may help pinpoint the problem.

  • Self Contained Final Cut Pro Export Files unreadable in New Final Cut Pro 7

Has anyone come across this? I was using Final Cut Pro 5, created a self contained file of a current project 1.9GB in size. Uploaded the new version of Final Cut Pro 7 and upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now it tells me that this is unrecognizable as a movie file. Quicktime or Final Cut Will not open this file. I'm puzzled.

    Hi VideoJunkie
I have not come across this. However, my previous FCP 6 Self-Contained Exported ProRes 422 standard (not HQ) files which are actually 1440 x 1080 will only playback in the new QT version 10 using that aspect ratio (whatever the actual screen ratio is at 1440 x 1080, I'm not sure, but the video width is squashed together... I suppose it has something to do with showing it in square pixels versus rectangle... or do I have that turned around. I'm not sure, I have always been confused about the ProRes 1440 x 1080 format, all I know is it plays back properly in 1920 x 1080 when I transcode it for DVD or ATV, iPhone etc..). In any case, you need QT player 7 (standard or pro version) to display these files at the intended aspect ratio of 1920 x 1080. The old QT Pro player version 7 will let you change this in the properties window, but the QT 7 standard player will not let you (those options are grayed out) and the new QT X player doesn't even show these options (i.e totally unavailable).
Also, these previous files will play just fine (for me anyway) in FCP version 7. If you having a different issue where they will not play at all, then I'm not sure how to help you, but I just wanted you to be aware that my old self-contained files from FCP 6 do work (for me anyway) in the new FCP7 under Snow Leopard.
(ADDED) I must ask, what codec were your previous exported self-contained QT movies? Do you have this codec on the commuter your trying to play your old master self-contained exports on?

Your media is stored in Final Cut Events folder > "name of event"  > original media. The Final Cut Events folder is in your movies folder or at the root level of an external drive if you are using one to store your media. Simply open iMovie and under file menu select import movies. Navigate to the original media folder and import your clips to Imovie event library.

  • I have a copy of Final Cut Express 2. Can I get a current upgrade instead of repurchasing the new Final Cut Pro?

I have a old copy of Final Cut Express 2 that I never installed. Can I get a current upgrade instead of repurchasing the new Final Cut Pro?
The Apple Store does not show does not contain purchase information of the old unused Final Cut Express. What can I do to register Final Cut Express 2 will not operate in the current OS systems on my iMac. It only is compatible with the G3 or G5.

If you have a record/documentation of your FCS full version purchase, you can contact Apple here:

    to obtain your serial number.

  • If I download New Final Cut Pro X ... Will I Still be able to use my Final Cut Pro 7.0.3?

If the answer is yes how do I separate them?  Can they both be in my applications folder?  I just want to try the new program.
I have one more  question ... Will the New Final Cut Pro X be able to use some of my old footage NTSC DVPro 720x480?
    Thank You
    roger

The answer is yes to all your questions.
Final Cut Studio gets moved to its own subfolder inside Applications.

  • Will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

will the new final cut pro x work with my Final cut pro version 6.0.6 data

    Thanks Tom.
So I will need  upgrade to FCP 7 first, then convert to an XML file in 6.0.6, then convert to another file that FCP X can read? I have a lot of half done projects that need finishing. Is this process very complex and time consuming?
Maybe I should be approaching this from a different angle. The reason I am asking is that I now need to upgrade to a new Mac book pro and have been told that I cant run final cut pro 6.0.6 on the new models using maverick. Is this true?

  • Can Premiere Pro CS 5.5 Export An XML To The New Final Cut Pro X?

Can Premiere Pro CS 5.5 Export an XML to the new final Cut Pro X?

No, it won't. Premiere Pro can only export an XML for FCP7 or earlier. Make a feature request if you like: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish

will final cut pro X 10.0.8  still be available for purchase after the new final cut pro release for mavericks/new macpro in december?

10.0.8 is no longer available, except in the trial version. The current sale version is 10.0.9. Apple has never sold older versions of their software, only the current version. That's not going to change in the near future.

Recently purchased a Macbook Pro with screen of retina of 13,3 inches. My question is, can I install the new Final Cut Pro X , is capable of withstanding the app? Or that Final Cut is convenient to install?

Generally any Mac made since 2009 can handle FCP X.
Your small screen is not ideal unless you are young and have good vision.
However, you needn't ask whether or not your computer is suitable as you can find out yourself by downloading the free 30 day trial.

In addition, to get you up to speed with FCP X, you can also watch 2 hours of free video tutorials here

  • Does the projects created in Final Cut Express transfer over to the new Final Cut Pro software?

Does the video projects created in Final Cut Express transfer over to the new Final Cut Pro software?

You want to go from FCE to FCP-X?
You would need to do so in multiple steps.
    1) You would need to be working in a very late version of FCE.
    2) Open the FCE project in FCP-7.
    3) In FCP-7, export an XML of the sequence you wish to get to FCP-X.
    4) Purchase the software 7toX
    http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/7toX/
    5) Import the XML into 7toX, export the FCP-X friendly file
    6) Import the converted XML into FCP-X
    7) Re-link all you media
It should be noted that when you use XML, not all the things you have done in your original sequence will make it through the final translation. There is more information about this at the 7toX page linked above.
