Brand New HP Officejet 4632 printer with new cartridges. Black ink showing empty

I just bought a brand new HP Officejet 4632 printer and as soon as I put in the ink cartridges that came with the printer it said printing in single cartridge mode and the black ink shows empty. I haven't even used the printer yet and it already shows empty. What do I do?

Hello bobboman11,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with the ink cartridges in your new printer.
Please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
Take the ink out of the printer and with a lint free cloth and some bottled water, lightly dampen the cloth and clean the metal contacts on the cartridges and the contacts on the carriage.  Make sure every thing is dry and make sure that the protective cover is completely off of the ink.  Insert the ink in to the printer and attempt a test print.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
Thanks for your time.

  • Officejet 4620 Brand new HP Black ink cartridge and it won't print black at all

Greetings, my printer recently ran out of ink. So I purchased a set of cartridges from Staples. I installed them and ran the Clean Printhead function. I now have great color and NO BLACK. I ran the clean printhead function numerous times. Its so frustrating to watch the evolution of printers over the last 2 decades go from reliable to unreliable all for the purpose of financial gains. I've had printers since the 80's, I used printers when they came with ribbon cartridges, which hardly failed, though they would indeed dry out. At least when they did dry out you would be able to put a new one in and continue. Now they have engineered replaceable printheads (because they were made knowing they will fail), ink cartridges that are not interchangeable (knowing that once you've had it with one printer model, you'll most likely switch to another brand or model) which uses a DIFFERENT model ink cartridge. All for finacial gain. Between my office and home, I've been through 4 printers in the last 2 years. I was a loyal Lexmark fan, untill my old one died and I purchased a new one, first thing I noticed was the changeable printhead, and I said to myself, uh oh, thats going to fail, and so said, so done, within 3 months of using the printer, Lexmark sent me 2 printheads and 2 sets of replacement inks free of charge. I still have a set of ink and a printhead because the LCD screen went blank, lol. Had to toss it. Ended up switching to HP which I believe is made in the same factory as Lexmarks after much comparison of models. Now I have the newest HP at my office and its been great thus far and SUPERB on ink usage, THUSFAR. I'm almost afraid to find out what my future has in store. I know I ran on alot off topic, BUT HP, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. I've now wasted $60 on a new set of cartridges and will most likely need a new printer since my warranty is expired. SMH. Bad Business!!!!

  • HP Photosmart 5510 fails to print with brand new 364XL black ink cartridge

The original HP 364 'SETUP' black ink cartridge worked well and I bought an HP364XL black ink cartridge via the HP website.
I installed the HP364XL this morning, but it's failing to leave any ink on the pages.
The cartridge seems to fit OK and there are no error messages.  The paper goes through in the normal way, but comes out with no printing on it.  The date on the box is SEP 2014, so it's not out of date.
I've tried to find what's wrong.  I've checked the cartridge is properly installed and it seems to have ink in it.   I've tried printing using the black cartridge again and again with different settings, such as 'Fast draft' and 'Normal', but each time the paper emerges with no printing.  The 'Supply Levels' shows the black cartridge to be about 90% full.
    This question was solved.

This is normally caused by the vent on top of the cartridge being clogged, or by a dirty printhead. The document linked below will help you work out the problem. Let me know what happens.

  • Officejet pro 8000 not recognizing brand new HP black ink cartridge

Hi. My officejet pro 8000 is not recognizing a brand new HP brand black ink cartridge. The black ink indicator remains lit and it will not print. I have unplugged the printer, but this did nothing. It is wierd, when I open the door where the cartridges are, the light goes out, it only goes on again when I close that door. The printer was working perfectly until this . Any helpful hints? Thanks so much.

    Hello chx2,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Officejet 8600 is not recognizing your brand new black ink cartridge. I will do my best to assist you! Please make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall. I just want to see if this makes a difference.
Next, please follow these steps in order:
    1) Remove all ink cartridges from the printer, then close the door
    2) Remove the power cord from the printer (Do not press the power button)
    3) Please clean the ink cartridges by following this HP document here. (Also, make sure you have completed all the steps from this document)
    4) Wait 60 seconds or more, then plug the power cord back in
    5) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges
    6) Try to print a document

  • Can't print with just one black ink cartridge on HP Photosmart C309a

I have a relatively new HP Photosmart all-in-one print-scan-copy-fax, C309a.  There are 5 ink cartridges, 4 small ones in black, yellow, magenta and cyan, then another XL black cartridge.  Today the small black cartridge ran out.  I ordered all 4 of the small cartridges.  Apparently the small black one is called "photo black", the XL is something different.  All are HP 654 ink.   Anyway, here's what I don't get: There is still plenty of ink in the XL black.  So why can't I print?  I even set it to print in only gray-scale, using only black ink ; also set it to always print text in black.  But when I print a page comes out barely visible, or blank.  Print Test & Diagnostic Test comes out the same way.
In another post I read that some printers can't function of one of the inks is dry, even if you don't need that ink for what you are printing.  Is that the case here?  I tried the online chat for technical support & could not get anyone.  Also e-mailed tech support & got a less than helpful answer in very difficult to understand broken English.  Just need to know if there is a way around this, or do I just have to wait for my color cartridges to be delivered?  Thanks!

I would like to know the answer to this also... I have a brand new black ink cartridge but my photo black is empty yet when I print it still tries to use the photoblack?

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 print with depleted cartridges

The HP Officejet Pro 8600 User Guide says:
"The printer can operate with one or more depleted cartridges. However, printing with depleted cartridges slows the printer and affects the quality of printed documents. If the black cartridge is depleted, blacks are not as dark. If a color cartridge is depleted, output is in grayscale. When possible, replace the depleted cartridge. Do not remove the depleted cartridge until you have a new ink cartridge available to replace. "
But the printer does not print with an depleted yellow cartridges. Do I have to change some settings? Or how can I make the printer print my document without replaceing the yellow cartridges?

I am annoyed. There is nothing on page 91 of my manual to indicate that there needs to be ink in all cartridges.  I can understand now why it won't print when one is empty, but one of the reasons I bought this printer is because it is supposed to print black only when up to 2 cartridges are depleted. My manual (page 90) says:
"The printer can operate with one or more depleted cartridges. However, printing with

What exactly is your printer model? The verbage of the above is that for an IPH printer (with a black and a tri-color cartridge or perhaps a black, tri-color and photo cartridge), it does not apply to printers with separate ink supplies and printheads.  Can you give a link to the manual online, or scan the page and post it here for your printer?
I can find several manuals online but not the one that I have and I don'tknow how to upload anything here. I have copied and pasted the relevant information from "my" manual, which has a black cover, says Officejet Pro in green, and says 8600 User Guide in white. I can see the other information in other manuals which explains about printing with LOW ink but not with NO ink. If you can tell me how to upload "my" manual, I'd be happy to do so. Meanwhile, here's what I've copied and pasted, and thanks for your interest.

  • HP7520 printing with photoblack cartridge instead of the regular large black cartridge.

Is there a way to select  which black cartridge the HP7520 should use?
I am printing text documents but the printer repeatedly uses the photoblack cartridge.
I have replaced the setup cartridges and have authentic HP cartridges but have still found that the regular black cartridge is not being used as much. The photoblack is being used to print text.
I have used the CleanPrint head tool too having searched for other similar queries but this has not helped.
    Advice appreciated.

    Hi Zim786,
I understand you have a Photosmart 7520 that seems to be using the photo black ink more than the regular black. I'm sorry to hear this, but I will definitely do my best to help you.
Unfortunately the way the printer uses the ink is in it's design, there isn't much we can do to change it. However, if you like, you can set the printer to use the Black Ink Only when printing from the PC so that it really only uses the black cartridge. You can set it for all programs via the driver, or on a print by print basis in the program when you're printing. I will start with explaining how to do this via the driver in Windows 7 (if you have a Mac or a different version of Windows, just let me know and I will adjust the instructions).
You will want to begin with accessing your Devices and Printers folder (via your Control Panel) and right click on your Photosmart 7520 icon and select Printing Preferences. The window that opens will be similar to the screen on the left of the screen shot below. On that screen you will click the Advanced button and then you will see a screen similar to the one on the right of the screen shot. There you will select the Black Ink Only setting and press OK. Then press Apply on the previous screen before again pressing OK. The driver will now be set to use the black ink only.
If you're wanting to do it just on a print by print basis, click File and Print in the program you're printing from, click Preferences, and then the steps are the same from there.
Hope this helps, have a great day!!

  • C4188 - printing with one cartridge

Is it possible to print with one cartridge installed? I am having problem with black cartridge so i removed it. The printer refuses to do anything with just color cartridge installed. Annoys a lot !!! It is a pure show stopper.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey @VIC-GEISH ,
Thank you for taking the time to post on the HP Forums today! Hope you enjoy the experience.
So there are a few things that I have to let you know. No printer, HP or not can print only black that is an InkJet. The reason for this is because many people would print only black with their multi-colour printers and the ink wells for the coloured cartridges would dry out and never be usable. So whether you select black only or greyscale you are still going to be printing some colour in those printouts so that the printer will be able to print colour when you need it to.
If using ONLY black was what you were trying to get the instructions for, unfortunately that is not possible. If you want to print ONLY black i recommend looking into laser black only printers that are multi-function, black only printers. They don't use ink they using toner power cartridges that last a very long time but are more expensive. We have those options in our HP LaserJet line.
Hope this helps! Have a great day!

  • How to get my C309a printer to only use black ink cartridge?.

I have changed my ink cartridges 3 times.  ALL of them.   I haven't had the printer for that long.  I only print TEXT so only BLACK INK. And not that much of it either.  SO why does all of the cartridges get used up?  I cannot find anything where you can adjust or fix this problem.  HELP as I don't have the money to keep buying all this ink.

    PTGillan wrote:
[snip]   Decent thing to do would be to allow printer to do what they have done from time immemorial - print faded docs to give us time to get cartridges and avoid total failure.  Not a good or decent system.  Not a good way to treat customers.
The Photosmart c309a does allow printing in black if a color ink is depleted - I have one here.  What is your printer model?
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 6500 printers.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printheadvor burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 3310 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here has information on how ink is used.

  • Black ink is not printing but the printer states that the black ink cartridge is full

    Hi.
I was printing something and the printer was working fine after i changed the black ink cartridge. After a few minutes, i continued to print and the ink was extremely light (almost unseeable unless it was held up to a light) for some words and non-existing for others. I tried cleaning the printerhead and the ink cartridge as well as resetting the ink cartridge but that did not help. I tried using anther black ink catridge but that didn't help. The printer does not state that the cartridge is damage or low in ink. When i printed the quality status, it stated that ink levels were good but showed the box for the black in to be completely empty. I tried to use the clean cartridge and align cartridge functions in tools but that did not help. Rather, when i performed the aligned cartridge, it stated that the alighment failed. I'm not sure what I should do to fix this problem? Any suggestions?
