Brand new ibook keyboard faulty

So I waited a while for the new ibook to be released, took the plunge and got my first mac ever. It arrived about 2 weeks ago ordered from the apple store.
Soon after switching on for the first time I could tell something wasnt quite right. It turns out that the number 4 key is 'sticking', I only worked this out once I opened the text editor. There is nothing physically wrong with the key however. But if im typing a document I get random 4s appearing, sometime rows of them at a time. When not in text editor I get the sound of a key being pressed like its being held down. It also makes it difficult to navigate/control the drop down menus. It makes the machine difficult to use in any capacity.
So I phone the Apple help line, I explained the problem and they ran though I couple of thing like re starting the machine and setting up a new user etc. Anyway, after about 1/2 an hour on the phone (mostly being kept on hold), they guy said he was going to have a new keyboard sent out to me. Hopefully that will fix the problem, I'll have to workout how it fit it myself....there are instructions on the Apple web site apparently.
Almost a week later and Im still waiting for this keyboard to arrive. :((
The whole buzz and fun experience of getting a new 'toy' has being ruined.

  • Minor flaw in brand new MacBook keyboard area

The surface material surrounding the keyboard (the area on which you place your hands) has a minor flaw on the left side near the bottom of the screen. It is slightly separated from the body. Can this be repaired/glued at an Apple store? I'd hate to have to ship it back for this. Thanks.

    HI,
Since this is a brand new MacBook, take it your nearest Apple store ASAP and tell them you want it repaired or if necessary, replaced. I think you have 14 days from purchase to replace the laptop if it comes to that.

  • Brand new Notebook Keyboard adds a "space" after pressing the "B" key?!

My brand new HP ENVY 17 SELECT EDITION NOTEBOOK PC 's keyboard keeps adding a space everytime I press the "B" key.... HALP?
    Example: "B rand new PC"

    Have you tried this?
    To Perform A Hard Reset
Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)
Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.
Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.
Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.
Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

  • Brand New MBP Keyboard DOA/Any Fixes?/Return To Amazon or Call Apple?

I received a 2.4 GHz MBP yesterday. The internal keyboard crapped-out shortly after I began using it, within fifteen minutes or so... It took me a minute or two to realize that I couldn't type anything. Like others have reported external input devices work. The trackpad/button also function properly.
The computer arrived with the Pro Software Update 1.1 already installed, so that relatively easy fix is out.
I am in the process of upgrading the MBP to 10.5.5, etc. and see if that helps, but I doubt that it will. I have been unable to find any reliable fixes online. Anybody?
So do I contact Amazon or call Apple? I am at the Amazon page where you click "refund" or "return." I could really use a reliable Apple portable computer but this has really put me off... I opted for a previous-generation model for the matte screen and a keyboard that I prefer. I am well -aware of the Nvidia GPU woes but I thought that I could try to mitigate the heat issue and hope for the best. Now I'm not so sure.
All but one of my Macs going back to 1995 have had at least one hardware issue and the portables have had at least two major hardware issues. But this is the first brand-new Mac that has arrived in this condition.

Having dug a little deeper into the Amazon returns policy I came across this:
"All computers sold by Amazon.com are supported by the computer's manufacturers. In the unlikely event a computer appears to be defective, customers are directed to contact the customer support networks of the individual computer manufacturer to have it serviced under warranty."
I had read somewhere that Amazon accepts computer returns if they arrive "DOA" but then I got to thinking that DOA may not apply to this situation...
So I guess my next stop is Apple if it acts up again...

  • Coffee in BRAND NEW mac keyboard

    Hi all..
I nearly touched my coffee glass, but it happend..
Is there anything i can do within the first couple of mounth?
I need a new keyboard, the other one is totaly destroyed, when i type a it makes q and stuff like that..
Im crying, cus its my boyfriends brand new imac 27" inch..1 week old ;(
    please help me

Something you can try. It often works with USB keyboards.
There are two issues - the presence of liquid, which shorts out circuits; and the presence of acid in the liquid, which can etch copper inside the keyboard. There can also be sticky residues from sweetened drinks, which can make keys stick or work only sometimes.
If you wish to try this -
First, assuming it is a wireless keyboard, turn it off and remove the batteries. Then fill a sink or small plastic tub of adequate size with warm (not hot) distilled water - like the kind you can get at supermarkets for steam irons. Do not add any soad or detergent. Immerse the keyboard in the water, slosh it around a bit. Then remove it, drain the water, refill with more warm diistilled water, and repeat as a rinse.
Then hang the keyboard up by one corner and let it thoroughly dry - this may take a few days. You can use a fan to help aid the drying, but do not use heat, such as a blow dryer or even direct sunlight for long periods.
You may need to use a Q-tip or paper towel to get the battery compartment thoroughly dry.
Plain water will not harm the insides of the keyboard, provided no power is running through the keyboard. Using distilled water helps prevent any trace materila being left behind, such as lime from hard water.

  • Firewire transfer problems on brand new Ibook...HELP

I just fired up my new Ibook for the first time. One of the first thing it asks is weather you want to retreive your info from your old computer. I said yes. I attached the firewire from my new Ibook to my old G3 b/w computer. I held down the "T" as it asked and then waited for the "firewire logo" to appear on my old computer screen. Well, it never did. I restarted and held down the "T" again. Still nothing. I really need all my info off the old computer. Could my firewire its self be bad? Am I doing something wrong? HELP.
A follow up question will be , once I get the "firewire" logo on my screen, how do I transfer the address book, etc.
    thanks in advance

If the Blue & White G3 has Mac OS X 10.1 or newer, you could use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner to clone all of your files to an external FireWire hard drive. You could then attach the FireWire hard drive to your new iBook and transfer your files. You do not have to transfer all your files the very first time you startup your new Mac. Take a look at Knowledge Base Article #25773.
The iBook does not require a "crossover" Ethernet cable if you're going to transfer files between it and another computer. Check out Knowledge Base Article #42717.

  • Brand new iBook

I just got a new iBook this Thursday and after installing the office programes, moving pictures and word douments over and about 400 or 3000 iTunes songs it is telling me that the hard drive is FULL! Has any one else run into this problem, I got the basic 40GB hard drive and it's hard to imagine that I have already filled it up. can any one help?

Yep, osx and ilife take up many g's of space, leaving not much room on 40gb. I had to upgrade to an 80gb.
If you dont want to upgrade your hard drive, you can download a program called whatsize. It'll tell you what programs are taking up the most room, and you can delete them accordingly.
For example, garageband and all the audio samples take up like 6gb or something, so if you dont use it, you can delete it

    1) What are the specs on the additional RAM you installed? Where did you buy it?
    2) If you go to the link below, you will find detailed, illustrated PDF files to show you what items are customer-installable parts and how it's done.

  • Weight/dimensions of brand new wireless keyboard? Use with Nokia S60 3rd?

    Hi,
I am considering the new apple wireless keyboard (aluminium) to use with my Nokia N80 / N95 phones, but the exact specifications are nowhere to be found.
Can anyone tell me if it is:
    - compatible with the bluetooth HDI profile like the previous model?
    - how much it weighs?
    - what its dimensions are?
Has anyone, by any chance, tried using it with a Nokia S60 3rd edition phone like a nokia E series or N series?

    hi there,
yes, i can confirm the usage of the new bluetooth aluminium keyboard in conjunction with my nokia n95 via the 'wireless keyboard' -application which is located in the office-folder of the n95.
i got it paired with no problems and the usage itself is also perfect.

  • Brand New Bluetooth Keyboard doesn't pair at startup on MAC Lion Server

    Hi,
Just got a new Mac Lion Server Mac Mini and went to set up last night.
Apple logo and chime comes up.  Then the screen to turn on Bluetooth Keyboard and Magic Mouse comes up.  I turned on the power on the mouse and keyboard.  The keyboard doesn't pair and the mouse does.  As soon as the computer realizes the mouse is connected, it moves on to the setup screens (username, server setup etc.) and doesn't care that the keyboard is not set up yet.  Of course, since I cannot type usernames etc. for the server, I get stuck.
I rebooted (hard power shutdown) several times in the hope that one time (accidently) the keyboard would be picked up but no such luck.
My PS3 recognized the Apple Keyboard so it's not the keyboard.
I didn't have a USB keyboard around so I have to wait till tonight to try to set up.  I have a couple of questions.
    1.  Anything with Mac Mini defective?  Is it something for me to worry about?
    2.  After I use the USB Keyboard, will my system recognized the Apple keyboard and keep it memorized.  I don't have a problem doing a one time setup in this fashion, but if it continues then I'd like to nip it in the bud.
    3.  Should I take it to the Apple store?
    Thanks for all you help.

This is an all too common issue.  It happened for me as well.  I don't think there's anything defective on your mini.  I used a wireless keyboard (USB) to complete the setup.  Once I was in Lion, I paired my Apple BT keyboard and haven't had a problem since.

I had just bought my iBook G4 12" and after a few hours, it seemed my latch was broken. That really bothers me.

  • Brand New Macbook Freezing / Faulty Adapter

Hopefully someone out there can help me..
I was given my Macbook Pro as a gift from the parents back in October last year. I remember it freezing on the first or second day of having it, but anyway.. since then it has been fine, until now!
About a month ago, I had my Macbook on the bed & I actually dropped it onto the floor [it worked fine] however, the magsafe charger has been faulty since. I have to wiggle it about to get the light to stay green/orange & sometimes it flickers faintly & the icon switches from charging to just normal on screen. Can someone tell me if I can get a new charger from the Apple store? I have the standard 1yr Warranty.
The other problem, which ONLY occurred this last 2 weeks is that my Macbook will just freeze. No wheel, it will just show the cursor where I last had it & NOTHING will work. I have to hold down the power until it switches off. I send a report to Apple [whatever this means] and sometimes it'll just freeze again a few minutes after. It has even froze on the actual loading up screen [with the white apple/loading icon]. Most of the time my Macbook freezes, I don't even have ANYTHING open.. which I'm guessing is bad news! I used to play my Sims 3 game smoothly before, however, now it also freezes a couple of minutes into it - so I've given that up!
I keep sending these reports & when I restart my Mac, about 5 minutes of using it [IF I'm lucky not to have the thing freeze on me] I'll get the ''You need to restart your computer'' message - and this also, just freezes up my screen. I was sending an e-mail earlier & half way through writing it, it happened & I lost everything! There is NO overheating/unusual noises.. the only time my mac heats up is when I'm using Final Cut / Sims, but even then it doesn't heat up more than usual..
I'm getting annoyed now because I have 2 x 3500 word essays to write & it is very annoying having to autosave every 2 minutes! Help!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your Mac should never freeze. There could be any number of causes, and the drop could be a factor. Unfortunately, the 1 year warranty does not cover accidental damage, although you may have homeowner's or renter's that does.
Since the freezing was present before the drop, it could be hardware or software related. A good place to start might be with the Apple Hardware Test, which is located on one of the gray system discs that originally came with the computer. Run the extended version if you can.
If the AHT runs to completion, see if it gives you any error codes that would indicate a hardware problem. If you get any, call Apple and tell them. Error codes indicate a hardware problem which Apple hopefully will be able to fix under your 1 year warranty.
If you cannot even run the AHT because your Mac freezes, then that in itself indicates some sort of a hardware problem, and again, you will need to call Apple about it and see if you can arrange for repair.
It's possible that the freezing and the kernel panic message you received may relate to your RAM not being well seated, so you might want to try reseating it. Instructions will be in your owners manual.
Here is a guide for troubleshooting kernel panics:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If none of this has helped, you might want to try reinstalling the OS.
As for the MagSafe adaptor, you want to try a different one just to be sure the damage is to the adaptor and not to the port in the computer. Here is a link for troubleshooting these:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it might be quickest to make an appointment at the genius bar and get them to help you with this. They have a hardware test they can run from the store feed, and they would know what to check.
    Good luck!

  • Is Brand New Thunderbolt Display Faulty or just Dissapointing?

I have just recieved a Retina MBP and a Thunderbolt display. Separately the displays look fine, but when put side-by-side the difference in colour is staggering. I can't believe there is this much of a difference so is my Thunderbolt display faulty?
I've tried calibrating them through System Prefs/Displays, but the difference remains.
The Retina MBP is pretty close to my old 1st gen Unibody MBP, so it seems the Thumnderbolt display is well off.
    Here is a picture:
Old MBP on the left, Retina MBP on the right and Thunderbolt Display behind. The difference is much greater in reality.

Well after the overwhelming response here I went into my local Apple store. My 'Genius' agreed that the colour was completely different, and actually looked quite shocked at how different they were side-by-side, but having compared my MBP with a few Thunderbolt displays he helpfully explained; 'It's totally different hardware.'  So just to get colour within the same ballpark I'm going to have to buy something to calibrate the screens. A nice little bonus after forking out close to £3000.
