Brand new iBook

I just got a new iBook this Thursday and after installing the office programes, moving pictures and word douments over and about 400 or 3000 iTunes songs it is telling me that the hard drive is FULL! Has any one else run into this problem, I got the basic 40GB hard drive and it's hard to imagine that I have already filled it up. can any one help?

Yep, osx and ilife take up many g's of space, leaving not much room on 40gb. I had to upgrade to an 80gb.
If you dont want to upgrade your hard drive, you can download a program called whatsize. It'll tell you what programs are taking up the most room, and you can delete them accordingly.
For example, garageband and all the audio samples take up like 6gb or something, so if you dont use it, you can delete it

  • Firewire transfer problems on brand new Ibook...HELP

I just fired up my new Ibook for the first time. One of the first thing it asks is weather you want to retreive your info from your old computer. I said yes. I attached the firewire from my new Ibook to my old G3 b/w computer. I held down the "T" as it asked and then waited for the "firewire logo" to appear on my old computer screen. Well, it never did. I restarted and held down the "T" again. Still nothing. I really need all my info off the old computer. Could my firewire its self be bad? Am I doing something wrong? HELP.
A follow up question will be , once I get the "firewire" logo on my screen, how do I transfer the address book, etc.
    thanks in advance

If the Blue & White G3 has Mac OS X 10.1 or newer, you could use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner to clone all of your files to an external FireWire hard drive. You could then attach the FireWire hard drive to your new iBook and transfer your files. You do not have to transfer all your files the very first time you startup your new Mac. Take a look at Knowledge Base Article #25773.
The iBook does not require a "crossover" Ethernet cable if you're going to transfer files between it and another computer. Check out Knowledge Base Article #42717.

  • Brand new ibook keyboard faulty

So I waited a while for the new ibook to be released, took the plunge and got my first mac ever. It arrived about 2 weeks ago ordered from the apple store.
Soon after switching on for the first time I could tell something wasnt quite right. It turns out that the number 4 key is 'sticking', I only worked this out once I opened the text editor. There is nothing physically wrong with the key however. But if im typing a document I get random 4s appearing, sometime rows of them at a time. When not in text editor I get the sound of a key being pressed like its being held down. It also makes it difficult to navigate/control the drop down menus. It makes the machine difficult to use in any capacity.
So I phone the Apple help line, I explained the problem and they ran though I couple of thing like re starting the machine and setting up a new user etc. Anyway, after about 1/2 an hour on the phone (mostly being kept on hold), they guy said he was going to have a new keyboard sent out to me. Hopefully that will fix the problem, I'll have to workout how it fit it myself....there are instructions on the Apple web site apparently.
Almost a week later and Im still waiting for this keyboard to arrive. :((
The whole buzz and fun experience of getting a new 'toy' has being ruined.

but my ibook now shows 576 MB of ram instead of the 1 GB is should show? Do I have a problem with my installation of the ram or a problem witht eh RAM itself..
Im waiting for teh batter to be full so I can kill it and then try to reinstall the ram.
    Thanks for your help

    1) What are the specs on the additional RAM you installed? Where did you buy it?
    2) If you go to the link below, you will find detailed, illustrated PDF files to show you what items are customer-installable parts and how it's done.

  • BRAND NEW iBook's display won't close

I had just bought my iBook G4 12" and after a few hours, it seemed my latch was broken. That really bothers me.

    Hi johnnee,
Return it. It was broken in the box (DOA) so they should give you a new one rather than repair it.

  • Brand New iBook + FireWire, no  Data Transfer

Using Startup Assistant, I tried to transfer data from my old PowerMac G4 (10.3.9), but it doesn't restart as required while holding down the "T" key -- it goes thru the regular start-up process instead. Also tried alternative FireWire. Does a firewall or lack thereof on the old computer matter? Need the data!

elf, Welcome to the discussion area!
Which Power Mac G4 do you have? Is it compatible with FireWire target disk mode?

  • Migrating old ibook's files on an external hard drive on to new iBook

I have an old white iBook G3 500 with a power adapter connector problem. Since I can no longer plug in the power adapter I transferred all of the old iBook's files to a bootable external firewire hard drive using the program Super Duper, which copies all files including system and hidden files. I then connected the hard drive to a G4 tower and booted it from the external drive. All of my files and applications worked fine.
Today I received a brand new iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz. When I start it up I would like to transfer all of the files and applications from the external drive. Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
I have used the set up assistant once or twice before using firewire target mode, but because I use it so seldomly I want to make sure this was a proper way to migrate the data and applications from my old machine.
    iBook 14 Inch G4 1.42 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Can I just connect the external drive and tell the new iBook to transfer all of the files?
Yes, assuming the external drive is a bootable clone. If it won't boot the old iBook, then the clone needs to be redone in such a way to make it bootable. It probably won't boot the new iBook unless it has 10.4.4 on it.

  • Installing OS9 on a new ibook with OS 10.4.6

    Hi there,
I just purchased a brand new ibook and want to be able to run OS9 on it to access some older programs of mine. It works just fine on the G4 computer I have as well as the imac G5 that I have at work. I am running various versions of OSX on the IMAC G5, G4, and the iBook. All I did was copy the system folder of OS9 onto my portable hard drive and onto the imac G5 and it worked great. It registered in the system preferences and started up just fine
For some reason I cannot do the same thing with my iBook in order to run OS9. There is no additional software disc, only the os10 install discs.
Is there any way I can instal my OS9 system folder so that it shows up in my system preferences like it does on the other two computers I have? Is there something I am missing when copying the folder over?

There is a 3rd party app (not supported by Apple) called SheepShaver, that allows you to run MacOS 7.5.2 thru MacOS 9.0.4 in it's own window, in a similar set up to VPC & Parallels Desktop
    Download Site (Universal Binary):

From the description: "SheepShaver runs MacOS 7.5.2 thru MacOS 9.0.4

Very detailed guide on how to set it up.

  • Old CD's on new iBook

Hi! We got our new iBook recently with OSX (Tiger). When I try to run a CD that we used to use with our old iMac, I am told that I need Classic to run the CD. Do you suggest that I install Classic in my brand-new iBook??? That seems absurd. But so does replacing all our CD's. (I'm talking about mostly educational and game CD's)
    Suggestions? Thanks!

If you install classic on your new iBook, classic does not replace Tiger. Classic actually runs as a background Tiger application. The only purpose of installing/running classic is to allow you to run pre-OS X applications.
If you need to run those old applications you will need to install classic.

  • No video on brand new mac mini

I am trying to get a brand new mac mini going for the first time, and although it switches on, there is no video on the attached VGA display.
I have connected the same display to my Ibook VGA adapter and it works perfectly, so it is not the display. I have also tried another display which also works on the I book. What else can I do other that take it into a mac store as I am a very long way from one?

  • My brand new osx tiger dvd is scratched!

Right, is was initially meant to be an email to apple themselves but i seem unable to find an email address for them, i would write out my problem again but this per written email seems to sum everything up quite nicely... so perhaps my question is whats an email for apple? or perhaps how do i go about getting a replacement for it?
anyways bear with it please as i am left with no working mac
    This is the email:-
    "hello apple.
My name is Mitchell Ashton From the UK.
i am writing to complain about a faulty product i have recently bought made by apple.
i recently got bought a genuine copy of mac os x tiger from ebay for my 17th birthday, sealed, unopened and brand new in the box,(this would suggest that it would be problem free or whatever problem it might have would have happened in the factory)
i opened the box and had a look at what i had got, everyting seemed to be in order, so i resealed it and continued with my family get together for my birthday (24th july)
Last night i decided i was going to install it and re format my hard drive. i made a backup of all my data on my ipod and cd's and took osx 10.4 out of it's sleeve and immediatly notice some quite deep scratches on the disk,
so i gave it a quick wipe down with a camera lens cloth with no difference to the blemishes, i proceeded to install my os onto my ibook g4 1ghz and i select erase and restore i think, the option to erase the hard drive and put on a fresh new copy of osx,
and it checks my disk and says there may be some problems with the disk,
but i proceed with instalation and i find that it stops and says try re-installing,
so i did and the same problem persists, so nopw when i start up my ibook it makes the start up tone but stops on a screen with a tiny little folder with a flashing symbol of the finder blue face icon and a questionmark, which i'm guessing means it can't find osx at all.
so i'm stuck here writing this on a painfully slow dirty windows xp computer and am not happy.
i have a very high opinion of apple and its products and services as they have done me proud in the past, but to buy a brand new product and find it faulty is a first for me.
there are a few codes of some kind on the base of the tiger box which are as follows:-
    M9639Z/A
    mac os x v10.4 retail
    <BARCODE>
    7 18908 37692 8
    Designed by Apple in California

Please contact me as to what is going to happen to me and my life of apple.

Thats my email, sorry to put you throught that lol, but i'm stranded on a windows!!! a non laptop one at that...
    please help!

"how do i go about getting a replacement for it?"
Call or go to whoever you bought from and ask to return it.

  • New iBook G4 - shuts down w/o power adapter

I helped set up a brand new G4 iBook for a friend (10.4) purchased today. When the power adapter is unplugged the computer immediately shuts down. The battery indicator shows 100% charge. What are the proper steps to diagnos/fix the problem? Or should they return it?

I would take it back. It could be that something as simple as resetting the PMU will take care of it. If that doesn't do it, this symptom could be a logic board problem (it was with mine).
Let Apple figure it out and/or have them replace it.
By the way, the iBook G4 Discussions can be found here. (This is the iBook G3 dual USB discussion area.)

  • Major kernel panics on brand new MB

SO here is the story from a brand new mac user (windows user since 1993). I was loaned an IBook this past summer and I tell you - I fell in love with this machine, so much so - that I kept it until this past week. I absolutely loved this so much that I decided that I had to get me a mac.
I am a teacher so I decided that Education store was the way to go - cheaper, free shipping.
I got a macbook 2.0 white Core 2 duo - awesome, 1 GB of ram, superdrive - I was pumped
I got this delivered to me on Jan 23 but due to a busy week, I didn't set it up until Saturday.
Start up went like a dream - until it started to reboot on its own - I thought that it was perhaps a new computer re-cycling system.
Then I get this black box with several languages that tells me to restart. Panic is slowly setting in since I haven't really done anything other than turn it on and register.
Unfortunately, Apple is closed at this point.
Monday morning comes and so do my phone calls. I get this awesome agent (Ashley) who walks my through a re-install of the system disks - it works for 15 minutes - black box comes up.
I call on Tuesday and again get super service from the agents - they give me some suggestions, all of which still do not work _ I know that these are kernel panics but nobody knows why. There was no need to update the firmware because the newest version of Mac OS was on the machine (tried this anyways - no luck).
On Thursday, I got in touch with Sales and Support and am now getting a brand new replacement MacBook within 48 hours.
This has been the best service that I have ever recieved from any company - everybody was super and provided my with awesome support. It was clear that there was a problem and this was quickly resolved.
    Hats off to Apple Support.
    My only questions:
Does anybody out there know why these kernel panics, random shutdowns happen?
Are there software conflicts that I need to know about before I get my new machine?

Kernal Panics are often caused by defective/improperly installed RAM module.
AppleCare could have had you test/reinstall the RAM.
This is a moot point since machine is being replaced.
    Enjoy the new(hopefully troublefree) MacBook.

  • I just got a brand new iphone 4s yesterday and found out today that the phone already had 10 days 15 hours cellular time used

I just got a brand new iphone 4s yesterday and found that the phone already had 10 days 15 hours cellular time on it, does it mean the phone is a used one?

That's not a reset pin. There is no reset hole in which to poke it. Neither is there a reset button.  It is the SIM removal tool. If you had it, it would save you the agony of finding a paper clip.
