Brand new iMac 27" no display

I'm just setting up a new Apple refurb iMac i7 27" for a friend, the mac chimes, then the fan kicks in at what I pressume is full speed but there is no display.
After a few minutes the mac starts talking, asking if I want to set up a screen reader. I've tried this five times now and the same every time.
Should my friend just send it straight back to Apple as DOA?

  • Pseudo scratches on brand new iMac (early 2009) display (a happy tale)

In case this might help anyone. I was disappointed to find on my day-old iMac several fine scratches on the display. Just to be sure they were true scratches, I rubbed each with the enclosed black microfiber cloth. Still there. The scratches had an optical effect—if you moved your head when looking at a scratch, with the display showing a white background, little bands of color could be seen along each scratch.
I knew I had not scratched the display myself. I was not looking forward to discussing with Apple if the glass (or whole iMac, now loaded with my data) could be replaced. After reading another post, I decided to try to determine if the scratches were on the inside of the glass—if so, I figured at least that would be a shoo-in for replacement under warranty.
A drew a fingernail across one scratch, to see if I could feel it. I could. But wait—did I just remove that section of the scratch? Yes.
Back to the microfiber cloth, now dampened with water, and with a little more pressure—"scratches" are gone!

I bet a tiny sliver of the glue used to hold that big piece of protective plastic sheet they apply over the iMac when shipped stayed on the screen when you peeled it off.
    Glad it worked out.

  • Why is my brand new iMac 27' display dark?

I just bought a brand new iMac and this is what the screen looks like:
    at full brightness:
    http://uploadphotos.co/images/17459272055549859163.jpg
At lowest brightness the glitch is not even visible:
    http://uploadphotos.co/images/91589219794648838918.jpg
I've taken screenshots and the darkening/glitch doesn't appear in the screenshots so it must be the display itself.
It's the brand new 3.4 ghz intel core i7...
Is there a firmware update or something for this?
Ie, is it a known issue or do I just have a deffective display?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be that if you call Apple Customer Support, the Tech may be able to give you a "fix" over the phone or at least help you diagnose the problem.  If you have to ship it back, try to arrange with Apple to have a delivery service (i.e. UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.) pick up the computer at your home with insured shipping both ways.
Try to work with the Apple Customer Support.

  • Brand New iMac freezes when external display connected

I'm having an issue where when I plug my Apple VGA adapter to my brand new iMac, it completely freezes. As soon as I unplug the adapter, it unfreezes. Also, if I plug in the adapter without the vga adapter, it does not freeze until I plug a vga cable into the adapter. Can anyone help me with this one?

Turns out that the solution is patience. After allowing the iMac to sit frozen for some time, it eventually starts working.

  • Slow performance, brand new iMac!

    Hello!
First, excuse my rusty English.. I hope you manage to read it
Main problem.. Adobe, PhaseOne and other intensive applications is veeeery slow on a high specced brand new iMac! Lightroom 5, PS CC and Capture One Pro 7 is what I use mostly.
I just got my brand new iMac 2014.2 (3.5/3.9 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512GB flash disk and GTX780M), and its quite a lot slower than my other Win7 workstation. Other workstation specs: i7 4.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, GTX 580. I'm working on the same Raid-5 drive (USB-3) too, so I don't know why it's slower..
    What I experience:
Changing from "current" raw to next raw (while culling) takes several seconds, and my Raid-5 is done chewing long before I see the result on my monitor. I get the spinning beach ball while waiting for preview. I always render 1:1 on import and 1:1+standard size in menu, just to be sure. Adjustment brush is like dodging in PS v1.0 (NOT CS) when computers had less disk-space than we have cpu-cache today, awfully slow, and it "stutters". Moving/panning in 1:1 is very choppy, and sometimes I get the spinning beach ball while panning.. This happens in LR and CO.. Photoshop CC stutters or have to "think" when I try panning. These problems happens in 6 Mpix, 12 Mpix or 25 Mpix RAW files, and actually in some JPEGs too!
    I have done following:
I've tried 2003 and 2010 processing in LR, small change. Fixed permissions in OS X. Removed preferences for LR, CO and PS CC. Reinstalled LR/cloud apps and Capture One Pro 7. Increased camera raw cache from 15 to 50 GB. Followed Adobe's guide to make LR faster. Followed Capture One guides. Reinstalled (clean install) of OS X. I've tried all tips I could find in the forums around.. I have also tried placing RAW files on internal 512 GB disk to see if that helps on performance, but no change. Same story with camera raw cache, doesn't matter where it is.
Additional things.. I’ve also diagnosed the iMac with checkdisk, memcheck, logs, etc.. No problems as far as I can see.
I just changed my workflow from Win to OS X and I depend on this to work.. I currently have 4000 files from my last job waiting to be worked on, and I'm not finished until Christmas in this tempo :-(
If I can't get this working very soon, then I have to return this very expensive iMac and buy a new PC again..

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

  • Brand New IMAC 27 overheats

    Greetings to all from Chicago!
    Just purchased a brand new IMAC (27 inch, 2.93GHZ QUAD-CORE INTELCORE I7, 8GB 1333MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB, ATI RADEON HD 5750 1GB GDDR5).
Previously had 24 Inch MAC (plastic on the back which is the point of my comparison. It still stand right next to the new one so I can compare.
The new Machine gets so hot that you can burn your hand. I am only running Logic Pro and Internet (same as on the old Machine). Measured via ISTAT PRO, the machine boots at at 25-28 Celsius (CPU temperature), then quickly warms up to 45-50 Celsius. It maxes out at 65-70 Celsius and stays there, NO MATTER which programs are ran. At that point, you can't even touch the top of the computer.
By contrast, my old IMAC 24 inch, stays cool, noiseless and never goes beyond 40-45 Celsius, when the same apps (Logic + intenet) run.
What should I do? Are all new IMACS like this? Is this because of the aluminum back? Shall I return it and wait for next year's model? Exchange? Repair? ( I have Apple Care). Here is how Apple advertised the new IMACS:
    Cool, quiet components
"The widescreen iMac display allows more room to separate the two hottest components, the CPU and the GPU. This keeps things cool inside the iMac enclosure. Apple engineers also implemented an intelligent control system that monitors temperatures and delivers just the right amount of airflow to critical components. And the three fans inside iMac have been tuned to be ultraquiet. The result of all this tinkering with heat and sound? A system that operates at 18 decibels when idle — so quiet, you hardly know it’s on.*
Well, the reality is that it is a lot nosier and heats up a lot more than the predecessor, unless I have a defected unit.
Thanks in advance for all the input and recommendations
    Cheers,

the components of the imac ARE cool & quiet, compared to other components. but don't make the mistake to think this means the imac is cool: it's an all-in-one-design, which just means it will get pretty hot, that's only natural. still, compared to normal computer components, the imac hardware is pretty cool, but that doesn't mean the case has to be cool. mine can get pretty hot too. I don't burn my hands, but it's painful to keep the hand on it.
as for the temperatures: 40-50 degrees celsius are normal for the CPU temp, everything above seems unnormal to me when your computer is idleling. what you didn't mention was your air temperature. are you dealing with hot weather currently?
anyway, also make sure in activity monitor no process is running wild and uses CPU. remember that the i7 has 8 cores, so 12% CPU usage actually means that one core runs at full speed!
besides that, if you have normal weather and no process runs wild and your CPU temp still goes over 50 degrees, I would call apple and they will likely exchange your imac

  • How can I transfer data (iTunes/iPhoto) MacBook Pro (Late 2011) to my brand new iMac 27" - Apple Support couldn't help me and did not make the promised call-back

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and bought a brand new iMac 27" last week.
I tried to transfer data (musdic & photos) via Thunderbolt, but i did not run, my system always
tries to transfer data via WLAN, but that would last more than 80 hours.
I tried to get some help from the Apple Support, but unfortunately they couldn't help me.
A promised call-back from the next higher support-level has not been done.
Does anybody know what the problem might be.
    The Thunderbolt-cable is brand new.

Instead of using Migration Assistant, the best way is to use the Target Disk Mode, so you will save headaches (Migration Assistant creates a new user with the transferred data).
To do this, just connect both Macs with the Thunderbolt cable, and then, start the MacBook Pro holding the T key, so a Thunderbolt or FireWire icon should appear on the display. After that, go to the iMac, open Finder, and the hard drive of the MacBook Pro will appear on the Finder sidebar as an external drive, under "Devices". Just access to it, go to the folders with your iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and copy them to the iMac

  • Please HELP!!  Brand New iMac- Won't turn on!!!!!

    Someone please help!!
I JUST purchased a brand new iMac today, no more than 4 hours ago! I brought it home and followed the set up instructions and pressed the "power" button.
The fan comes on- it sounds weak to me, then it slows down, the little white light at the botton right hand side comes on, but the screen remains BLACK!!! Nothing comes on my screen!!
I am NEW to Apple, so I am CLUELESS as to why this is happening or what is going on- not to mention EXTREMELY AGGRAVATED that I cannot find any tech support AT ALL- not on the phone, not on chat, not anywhere!!! I have waited almost 2 yrs to purchase a new computer- I chose an iMac, and this is the crap I get.
    Please help!!!!
    iMac 17inch   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   New

    Dawn,
Having suffered my share of 'difficult' products, I can understand your frustration. This is compounded by the financial restraint you exhibited for 2 years of saving. Your experience should not just be good, it should be exceptional.
There may be something wrong with your machine. The white light is on when the machine is booting or the display is sleeping. The light will softly flash on and off while the machine is sleeping.
The fan should be as quiet as possible, to the point of being a low rumble/whisper or not even heard. It sounds like your computer is stuck in a startup mode.
Calling Apple will get this issue resolved to your satisfaction in a timely manner. If you state the issues they should be more than helpful. You can try a few things for now.
Press and hold the power button on your machine for a while and see if it reboots.
If you look on this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303124
You will notice the instructions for zapping the pram (keys held down when you press the power button and held continuously) : Press Option-Command-P-R until you hear two beeps (release)
Try that next. Your machine should be restarting when you toggle the power button.
Another quick thing you may want to try is shutting down the machine, unplugging everything (every cable including the power cable), waiting about 2 minutes, then plugging in just the keyboard and mouse and starting the machine with the power button.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Migration Assistant screwed up my brand new iMac

So my brand new iMac (MC812LL/A) was delivered today. Upon opening, I decided to use the Migration Assistant to bring over userids from my older intel iMac. I was shocked to see the time needed to be over 10 hours for a 175kb transfer. Anyway, I let it go and came back after half an hour and seemed like the transfer wasnt successful. Pressed the continue button and now the display is stuck on my wife's userid and its not taking her password. The userid also shows the picture.
I checked the box and there is no recovery discs in it. Called Apple and they are closed. What can I do in this situation?

Do you got the iMac Manual on hand? if not, refer to this link : http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_mid2011_ug.pdf
On page 54, it tells how to reset your OS to factory setting. But you have to re-install all the apps...

  • HT201250 I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was?

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • How do I uninstall Mavericks and recover Lion?  I have a brand new iMac and web pages stall or freeze since I installed Mavericks.  I can't get it to download software for my printer when I connect it.

I have a brand new iMac.  It was working fine until I downloaded Mavericks.  Now I have web pages that freeze while trying to load.  The blue in the address bar stalls and freezes.  If I try to load from page 1 to a later page, or reverse that, I also have the same problem.  I tried to connect my printer for the first time, and again, the blue progress bar froze.  Then I got the yellow  triangle telling me there was a connection problem.  My internet connection is via an Air Card as that is my only option where I live.  I packed up the whole new iMac and took it to my Air Card provider, where they also have very fast Wifi, and they had the same problem with Wifi.  I use my Air Card with my MacBook and it works JUST GREAT!  I really want to return to Lion.  HELP.

The only way to retutn to Lion is to format your drive (erase, lose all) and either:
    1. clone back the clone copy i hoep you have, or
    2. first backup your files, then format and install Lion again
But really, mavericks works great. You have a problem. Find out why. First, what unusual software do oyu have installed that may be conflicting with it? Virus, system modifiers, etc?  Second what OLD software do you have that might be the problem.  finally, you might need to do a re-install if something errored during install.

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.
