Brand New iMac Crash (twice in one day)

I just bought a brand new 27inch iMac 2 weeks ago - its running Mavericks
Today I came home to find the computer switched off. I turned it back on and then later in the day came back to find it off again.
I went to terminal and typed "last" and saw two crashes listed (see below). My question is, how can I find out what caused the crash? Its a brand new machine, has 32gb ram and 3.5ghz i7.

Open the console app and look for the reasons for the crashes or why iot shut off. Do a SMC and PRAM reset.
Check the current hbernate mode with this terminal command.
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
The a google search for the options available.
It seems that with certain hibernate modes the system goes into Deep Sleep, Hibernate, and crashes when coming out of it. So if your system is doinig that disable the Deep Sleep, hibernate mode, and test.
The hibernate mode is where the system write RAM data to the Sleep Image files on the hard drive and then is supposed to load that back into RAM when you wake it up. Somewhere in that process the system crashes.

  • Video converters from app store and online making my brand new iMac crash continuously, why?

I have downloaded various video converters from the app store and online and it seems that no matter which one I use they all make my brand new iMac (I've had it less than 2 weeks) crash. I've wiped the disk once and reinstalled mountain lion twice as directed when I rang apple and I'm still encountering the same problem.
I would really like to find a way to fix this problem without having my mac sent away for repairs.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or know how I could fix it?

  • Brand new iMac crashing often - is it ML??

I just bought my 27" iMac in July, and hadn't any problems for the first few weeks.  With upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've noticed my OS is crashing very regularly.  It's not a typical Kernal Panic, though, at least not what I'm used to.  The iMac will freeze, if there's any audio it'll stutter for a few seconds, and then the screen will go grey (but not the shade that comes from the top down), and a message will come up saying to press any key to restart the computer, or just wait for it to boot on it's own.
Is this a Mountain Lion issue?  It wasn't happening during the first few weeks I had this new Mac when it was on 10.7.4.
Here's the accompanying problem report that comes up after every reboot:

That is the problem with kernel extensions. You are always using them. They have modified your operating system. Even the latest versions may not be compatible. You may have to completely remove them.

  • Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing randomly in mavericks while idling, using firefox, transferring files, etc.  Reformatted and reinstalled everything from scratch after 15 plus crashes a day.  Crashes now only 4 times a day.  Help!

Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing.  I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date.  It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling.  It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software.  Now it it still crashing albeit less often.  This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm thanks for the input.  Alright. I uninstalled Avast.  Was good for an hour or so.  I was doing some file browsing and crashed again.  Got this message.

  • I have a brand new iMac that does not have iDVD. Made a move on iMovie installed a 3rd party burn prog. but DVD won't playback on my regular dvd player. Need to burn one that will. Help!

My new iMac did not come with iDVD as they are not using iDVD any longer.  I made a movie that I needed to put on a DVD that would play on any external DVD player. After calling Apple twice, they recommened a 3rd party program so I downloaded "Burn-osx" and made the DVD; however when i insert it into my player connected to the TV it gives the message "disk error --playback feature may not be available on this disk".  Ok--now what?  I am up against a time line here--need the DVD for a graduation party! Help! What am I not doing correctly?

I have a brand new iMac
If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

    800-692-7753
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie. Get iDVD.

  • Final Cut X Keeps Crashing with Brand New iMac

I have a brand new iMac (3.2GHz Quad-core Intel i5, 8GB SDRAM, 1TB ATA, 1GB GGDR5) and have done almost nothing on it before downloading the trial version of Final Cut Pro X. I was used to Final Cut 7 and wanted to try out X before purchasing.
I have one project and one event in Final Cut X, it's only a 4 minute video of mostly images, some video and two audio tracks. Every time I try and add any effect like a simple crop/Ken Burns or cross disolve to one of the pictures, Final Cut crashes.
Most of the stuff on here says to delete your preferences or repair disk permissions. I have repaired disk permissions and it still crashes. And as far as preferences, it says to use an app from Digital Rebellion to delete any preferences but I don't think I even have any to delete. I went to system folder -> Library -> Preferences and looked for any FinalCut.plist files to delete and there are none.
I'm wondering if certain photos I'm using are corrupted, but it would appear they all are then. I imported them from a file, would it help to import them from iPhoto? Is there something else I could do to fix those photo files? Or anything else I could try to get Final Cut from crashing?

Thanks for your reply Russ. I'm not sure what you mean by Preference Manager. Am I looking in the correct place for preference files? (Users > Library > Preferences)
Are you saying that even though I may not find them in the Prefereces Folder, an app like Digital Rebellion would help me find them?
I'll try testing a new project but the problem is I can't isolate the problem clip because it seems to be crashing anytime I try and add effects to any photo. Do you know of an app that I could run photos through to "uncorrupt" them?
And when you say create a new user account, you mean at the system level of the computer?

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

If I back up my iOS devices on my iMac in the US, then do a time machine backup to an external HD, will I be able to plug the external HD into a brand new iMac in the UK and restore the new machine as per the old one, and restore my iOS devices?

Since you don't really have a question, I will give you a very broad information source for the next time you have a Time Machine question.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.

That certainly looks like a low memory issue, 2 GB ram is barely enough to run Mac OS X versions from Lion through Yosemite.  The high number of Page Outs and killed processes show very high memory pressure.
Try adding memory, but be sure it is high quality, Mac certified memory such as that from OWC, http://www.macsales.com or Crucial, http://www.crucial.com

  • Can't partition HD with Bootcamp Assistant on brand new iMac

I just got a 27" 1TB brand new iMac three days ago. After copying over all my files from my previous computer (PC), installing some software packages and configured the Mac the way I want it, yesterday I wanted to partition 80GB out of remaining 330GB with bootcamp assistant to install Windows 7. After one hour it stopped with an error message that it wasn't able to move some files and I would need to re-format the HD and start again.
Is there really no other way? It took me two days to get to where I am.

It should only take less than a minute.
So just use OS X software to clone what you have to another hard drive, then do an erase and restore.
And backup before starting is at the top of the list of things to do to prepare.
http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp - re-read the pdf guide linked at the top and other tech articles.
And you really do want bootable clone image of Mac OS anyway, in addition to or in place of TimeMachine, so no loss in doing so. It isn't as if you will lose or have to redo.
It needed contiguous free space and no files at the end of the disk. But installers and updates do scatter files and fragment free space a lot and can leave files locked where they can't be moved.
    SuperDuper
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    iDefrag
    iPartition
    Apple Disk Utility Restore
And you can have OS X on multiple hard drives, plus it really helps for doing the type of maintenance and repairs needed for updates and proper running.

  • Brand new imac Retina and can't enter Apple Diagnostics.  Doing it wrong?

I've had various issues with my brand new imac retina.  I've spoken with Apple Care about two of them (Finder icon issue; slow shut down) and we're working through it all trying to figure out if it's software and whether the current beta update will solve the problem when it comes out.  They've extended their 14 day exchange to 60 days for me while we sort it out.
All said, one thing they suggested was to run the Apple Diagnostics by holding down D upon booting.  I've tried running this, it comes to a screen wanting me to pick the language, and nothing happens.  It's like it doesn't do anything upon picking the language, just sits there.
The Sr. Tech I was talking with just said "that's strange" but with other things we were discussing he went about focusing on the other things.
I may try yet another separate call to discuss this with them but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has encountered/solved this issue, see if I'm going about it the wrong way.
I'm holding down D and I'm connected by ethernet.  This is the new imac retina 5k, 2014.
    Thanks.

That's might nice of Apple.  Personally, I would not be sorting anything out on a brand new Mac.  I would be demanding a brand new replacement.  One that is suppose to work rigiht out the  box.

  • Brand New iMac 24" internal or external hard drive upgrade to 1TB?

I just purchased a brand new iMac 24" MB325LL with a 320GB hard drive. I currently have 432GB of data on my PC and I would like to upgrade the hard drive to 1TB. I have 2 options and I need your advice:
    Option #1 » Cost:CDN*$255*
Buy a Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB from DirectCanada.com for CDN$155 (tax+shipping included). Get it installed by a certified Apple technician for CDN$100 in Toronto. I doubt I can get it installed for a lower fee.
    Option #2 » Cost:CDN*$317*
Buy a LaCie D2 1TB external hard drive with Firewire 800 for CDN$317 (tax+shipping included) either from a U.S. retailer (e.g. iUnitek) or a Canadian one. Prices at Canadian online retailers start from CDN$266 + CDN$37 (13% tax) + CDN$18 (shipping) = CDN$321, which is just CDN$4 more than in the States, taking into account the exchange rate.
So, there you. From the financial point of view, the incentive is to get an internal hard drive, which I don't mind at all. I'd like to install Vista on a 30-40GB partition, if that makes a difference. If I were to get an external hard drive, I would keep all of my data (e.g. music, movies, documents, music, etc) on it and reserve the internal 320GB hard drive for system files and OS.
What would justify paying a premium for an external hard drive other than portability? If I were to get one, I would need to be able to access it not only from my iMac's Vista partition, but also from my HP Vista laptop. Same applies to the internal hard drive. If I were to get a Samsung F1, I would still need to access my mac files from Vista's partition (when I boot into Vista) as well as from my HP Vista laptop (over wi-fi). FYI: I have no use for Time Machine, since I've never deleted a file which I needed to recover..well, maybe once or twice. What I DO need is a utility to synchronize files across machines. Hence, I will need some kind of program to automatically sync my iMac files with my HP laptop files. Currently, I utilize SyncBackSE to sync files between my HP laptop and my PC over Wi-Fi every morning at 6am. Works like a charm.
That's my dilemma in a nutshell. Any comments, suggestions and words of wisdom are welcome.
P.S. I'm also planning on upgrading RAM to 4GB. Newegg.ca is running a promotion (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251): $72 CDN minus $20 USD mail-in rebate. It's not related to my question in any way, but some Canadians might find this info relevant.

Well, I don't have the budget for both and as I've already pointed out, Time Machine does not address my needs. It's a great backup solution, but what I need is a synchronization solution. I need to have the same versions of basic files, such as music, photos, documents, and other miscellaneous stuff on my iMac and my HP Vista laptop. Even if I were to get a MacBook in the future, I would still need the same set-up. That way, if something happens to either my iMac or my MacBook, I would always be able to simply copy-paste files from one machine to another. That's, sort of, my version of a perfect backup solution...unless, there's an option to load up files from a Time Machine backup onto a separate one (e.g. MacBook). In the end, Time Machine only partially addresses my need in keeping 2 machines backed up in a sense that it only backs up one of them. My solution kills 2 birds with one stone. I would have 2 syncronized computers (e.g. iMac + HP Laptop, iMac + MacBook) AND both computers would serve as mutual backup sources, since whatever happens to one of them, I would always be able to copy data from the other.
The problem arises when I factor in the sheer number of gigabytes required on the portable computer to mirror everything from the iMac, whether be it a Windows laptop or a MacBook. I would always have more data on my iMac than the available space on a smaller hard drive. I now have 432GB of stuff and I can presume that this number will only grow. Hence, at any given time I would be able to synchronize only the most essential files to the laptop. Ideally, I would need a NAS which would collect = synchronize data from both machines. That way, whenever files get modified, changes would automatically be transferred to the NAS and routed further down the chain to the iMac. It would work both ways, obviously. In that scenario, I don't need to worry about any of the computers, since whichever one fails on me, I would always have a copy of the entire collection of files. Now, that I doubt Time Machine can accomplish.

  • Brand new iMac 27" i3 is flashing blue screen

My brand new Imac (one-day old) is acting very odd as it slowly flashes a pulsating light blue screen when I try to access Apple Menu (restart/sleep/shutdown) features. No matter what I do it will not turn off. I have since had to do a hard shutdown but now it stops at an error screen upon start-up that tells me to restart!
I am Mac savvy and this has never happened to me. Prior to this happening, I called Apple Tech Support because I could not use their Mac Migration feature to move my info off of a G4 running 10.4.11. Tech support could not help either as wireless, ethernet and direct Firewire attempts yielded no Migration results. I finally had to pull the hard drive out of the G4 and hooked it up to the new iMac. Everything seemed to transfer except when it was done the contents of what I just copied thru Migration was nowhere to be found. That is when I started experiencing the slow-flash blue screen phenom and is where I am stuck today.
I am ready to take this thing back. In all my years I have never had a problem like this with an Apple product. Any help or insight will be appreciated.

    ONE
Paul has given you good advice in that I would reinstall the OS from the supplied disks to get your computer working properly.
    TWO
Then re-install your old programs (only those you really need since they are likely PowerPC, not “universal” Intel programs) from their original disks.
    THREE
If you have the user data from the old drive backed up, then hopefully you can restore your user data to the new drive or buy an enclosure and access the old data as needed (which is what I did when originally migrating from a Power Mac G5 to the iMac (late 2009).
Alternatively, if step ONE is problematic and your machine is defective, you can likely return it to Apple within 14 days (or whatever the law is in your country) for a replacement or refund and purchase a new iMac just released today.  Steps TWO and THREE still apply in this case.

  • Brand new iMac, can't partition using Bootcamp

I just got a 27" 1TB brand new iMac three days ago. After copying over all my files from my previous computer (PC), installing some software packages and configured the Mac the way I want it, yesterday I wanted to partition 80GB out of remaining 330GB with bootcamp to install Windows 7. After one hour it stopped with an error message that it wasn't able to move some files and I would need to re-format the HD and start again.
Is there really no other way? It took me two days to get to where I am.

Did you use the Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive?
BTW you should be posting in Boot Camp forum located at:
