Brand new imac doesn't come with startup disc?

just got an imac and it didn't come with a startup disc. is that the way things happen now? my mail is corrupted so i wanted to run disk utility on it. how do you do it without a disk?

You will have to use your recovery drive.  It is automatically installed, look for it when you restart your computer holding down the Option key, select it, and it will install a fresh copy of the OS, but leave your apps and preferences untouched.
Lion is only available throught the MacAppleStore, that's why you have the recovery drive, it takes the place of an install disc.

Is a new iMac meant to come with Lion? I had to pay to download and upgrade my machine

Most new ones now have Lion pre-installed. Some models still in inventory before Lion was released still have Snow Leopard pre-installed. If you wanted Lion then you needed to purchase and download it from the App Store unless you applied for the free Lion redemption code. Since you may have purchased an older model that was on sale and did not get Lion pre-installed you had to purchase Lion separately. The Lion Up-To-Date offer expired some time ago, but you are free to take the matter up with the vendor.

  • My imac did not come with a disc and i accidentally deleted OS what do i do

I was trying to reformat my imac and i think i deleted OS. My imac did not come with a disc drive or a OS disc. what can I do

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My new 2014 iMac doesn't come with the apps the website says it does?

I need the apps that the imac says it comes with to do work and get things done and ive been searching for them and cant find any so i went to the app store to see if i had to download them and they cost money but the website says theyre built in? should i ask where i got th mac from about it or what?

    Free does not mean pre-installed.
I assume you are referring to the iWork apps (Numbers, Pages, etc..) if so open the Mac App Store go to the purchased tab and download them. If you continue to have difficulty you have 90 days of complimentary telephone support, if you did not know about this then please click
http://www.apple.com/support/complimentary/ to get the number in your country.
Also if you have not already purchased AppleCare I would STRONGLY recommend it. If you don't know what it does look it up on Apple's site.

  • New imac didn't come with idvd, help!

I am brand new to the mac world, I was so excited to use the imovie app...the whole reason I decided to switch over to mac...only to find out that the newest imac does not come with idvd or iweb???? I have talked with tech support several times, but I'm still confused.  Can I purchase iLife 11 from amazon and will it be compatible with my imac/imovie program??? I need something with simplicity!!! which is why i went with mac to begin with:/ very disappointed...

I hear you... unfortunately, Lion does not support iDVD >  http://www.apple.com/ilife/
If you want the other components of iLife you need to purchase those from the Mac App Store.
You can access the App Store from your Apple menu icon top left in your screen.
Or from the App Store icon in your Dock
    Or from your Applications folder.
You can use iPhoto to create slideshows and burn that to disc.

  • Power button on brand new iMac doesn't work properly?

    Hello,
I am having problems with the power button on my brand new iMac which was purchased 2 weeks ago. Some days I press the power button and everything works fine. And then some days, I get no response from the power button. I then just unplug and replug the power cord from the surge protector back in and then the power button works!
I also shut down every night - I don't put the computer to sleep.
Can someone tell me what is going on? I've searched these message boards and see old post from others out there have also dealt with problem.
Any advice or insight would be most helpful! Thanking you in advance.

A couple of things first your machine has a 1 year warranty and is covered by 90 days of complimentary AppleCare. You should contact AppleCare to get the machine fixed.
Next please carefully read your owners manual, below is what Apple specifys,
"If you'll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass the startup process."
Personally I only let the monitor sleep, my system has been running like this for 4 years and is the most reliable computer I've ever owned.

  • My brand new iMac doesn't appear to have the iDVD application - how can I get it?

How can I get the iDVD application for my new iMac.  I want to use iDVD for conveniently making DVDs of iPhoto slide shows and iMovies.  I'd be greatful for any help.  I've already tried looking through my applications, the App Store, and various Apple help menus in Lion and the Apple Tech Support Web page - so far no luck, but perhaps I'm not seeing things right.

The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that nothing could be further from the truth has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD.

  • Mac App Store Error 18 in brand new iMac, doesn't allow me to update Mountain Lion, iPhoto and iMovie.

    Hi there,
When I try to update iMovie, iPhoto and Mountain Lion I get this error: "Error in the App Store. Try again later. (18)".
Just wanted to know if anybody had the same Error from Mac App Store as I've been searching in the Apple Support Communities and other websites but haven't been able to find any solutions to the problem.
I have a new iMac 21 inch running Mountain Lion, I received it a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks a lot for your help.

    Hi,
I tried to update them all together and also separately but just couldn't be done.
I don't remember having accepted anything regarding iLife apps during the iMac set up to be honest.
I still haven't tried any of the iLife apps, but why would this matter?
I should be able to update without any problem and still get the same "Error in the App Store. Try again later. (18).
I just saw this other post and it looks exactly the same problem as I have, but nobody seems to know how to solve it either:

  • New iMac didn't come with iLife

    Hi,
I just bought a new iMac from Futureshop and don't have garageband, imovie or iphoto installed. Any help out there?

Those are "bundled" apps, which means they are included as an incentive to buy the computer. Unlike iTunes they are not considered free.
If Futureshop didn't sell them with the iMac, you have to buy them individually from the App Store.

  • New iMac did not come with Mountain Lion

I just purchased an iMac last weekend and it came with OS 10.7.4.  Do I have to pay for OS X Mountain Lion or should I have a free download?

    Hi heathdholt,
Here is a link with the list of all qualifying new Macs that can get a free copy of OSX Mountain Lion:

Here is a link to apply for that free download:

  • My new MacBook doesn't come with Bootcamp

I just got it yesterday. It came with Leopard. I tried to look for it in the installation DVD 1, but the folder doesn't exist. That's what I typed in //Volumes//Mac OS X Install Disk 1/System/Installation/Packages/

    From http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5732708#5732708
"I called Apple support this morning, and they guided me to the Boot Camp package on the setup CD - just put the Install Disc 1 in, then in Finder, to to Go -> Go To Folder... and put
    /Volumes/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages
in the dialogue box. There you should see BootCamp.pkg. Running that with all the defaults puts the Boot Camp Assistant in /Applications/Utilities/

  • Does my brand new untouched macbook pro come with a program compatible with Microsoft word

does pages come on a new macbook pro and is it compatible with ms word

Pages & the other iWork apps are not included with new Macs, you must purchase them. They are very reasonably priced in the Mac App Store.
TextEdit can open & save .doc files. You'll find it in your applications folder. If you want a free suite of apps compatible with Office, look at LibreOffice.

  • I have a brand new iMac that does not have iDVD. Made a move on iMovie installed a 3rd party burn prog. but DVD won't playback on my regular dvd player. Need to burn one that will. Help!

My new iMac did not come with iDVD as they are not using iDVD any longer.  I made a movie that I needed to put on a DVD that would play on any external DVD player. After calling Apple twice, they recommened a 3rd party program so I downloaded "Burn-osx" and made the DVD; however when i insert it into my player connected to the TV it gives the message "disk error --playback feature may not be available on this disk".  Ok--now what?  I am up against a time line here--need the DVD for a graduation party! Help! What am I not doing correctly?

If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

they recommened a 3rd party program so I downloaded "Burn-osx"
Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD.   I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others.  None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie. Get iDVD.
