  • My brand new iMac screen goes black intermittently...

Hi - I bought my 27" iMac about 3 months ago and pretty much since I got it occassionaly the screen goes black. I'll be working away and all of a sudden it goes black. After a few seconds it comes back on, but this can't be good? I asked my local computer guy and he said it was a known issue due to safari and not to use safari. That seemed to fix it but A) I like Safari and B) it's started happening now even when I'm not in Safari. Any ideas?

That's ridiculous. Take it in for warranty service.

  • Dirty Black Blotches inside my brand new iMac screen, behind the glass

My brand new 21 inch iMac has some blotches in the screen. I didn't notice at first because my wallpaper is very colorful and has some blotch designs on it, but I opened a textedit document and the blotches are very visible on the plain white background. I tried wiping the surface of the glass with the cloth that comes in the iMac box only to discover that the blotch marks are BEHIND the glass!
Please HELP! :-O I tried calling the 1-800 apple support number for my country (Philippines) but the number doesn't work or is not supported by my phone company or mobile phone company. I took a picture of the defects and was hoping to email it to apple, but I cannot find a proper support email address on the apple.com site. Is there a way to attach them to this forum thread? It is quite frustrating and I don't know what to do.
What steps should I take to remedy this?

  • Brand New iMac Screen With Moisture : (

I just bought 24" iMac and it was all covered up and brand new but after few seconds I noticed on bottom right edge of the screen some sort of fog or moisture! Please no not on my first Mac!!!
I'm really disappointed and I know it's probably happened on the way of shipping because I'm located in Asia (Qatar). Just called the apple store in here and I'm really sure they'll take it a way for a week and I hate the idea of having this iMac opened up in here because I know it will come back not 100% like before! please can someone tell me is there a way to replace it? just the screen I'll keep the rest of the stuff please help.

Is the moisture just on the back of the glass front panel? That cab be removed with a large suction cup (it is held by magnets) then cleaned.

  • Brand new iMac 27" i3 is flashing blue screen

My brand new Imac (one-day old) is acting very odd as it slowly flashes a pulsating light blue screen when I try to access Apple Menu (restart/sleep/shutdown) features. No matter what I do it will not turn off. I have since had to do a hard shutdown but now it stops at an error screen upon start-up that tells me to restart!
I am Mac savvy and this has never happened to me. Prior to this happening, I called Apple Tech Support because I could not use their Mac Migration feature to move my info off of a G4 running 10.4.11. Tech support could not help either as wireless, ethernet and direct Firewire attempts yielded no Migration results. I finally had to pull the hard drive out of the G4 and hooked it up to the new iMac. Everything seemed to transfer except when it was done the contents of what I just copied thru Migration was nowhere to be found. That is when I started experiencing the slow-flash blue screen phenom and is where I am stuck today.
I am ready to take this thing back. In all my years I have never had a problem like this with an Apple product. Any help or insight will be appreciated.

    ONE
Paul has given you good advice in that I would reinstall the OS from the supplied disks to get your computer working properly.
    TWO
Then re-install your old programs (only those you really need since they are likely PowerPC, not “universal” Intel programs) from their original disks.
    THREE
If you have the user data from the old drive backed up, then hopefully you can restore your user data to the new drive or buy an enclosure and access the old data as needed (which is what I did when originally migrating from a Power Mac G5 to the iMac (late 2009).
Alternatively, if step ONE is problematic and your machine is defective, you can likely return it to Apple within 14 days (or whatever the law is in your country) for a replacement or refund and purchase a new iMac just released today.  Steps TWO and THREE still apply in this case.

  • Please HELP!!  Brand New iMac- Won't turn on!!!!!

    Someone please help!!
I JUST purchased a brand new iMac today, no more than 4 hours ago! I brought it home and followed the set up instructions and pressed the "power" button.
The fan comes on- it sounds weak to me, then it slows down, the little white light at the botton right hand side comes on, but the screen remains BLACK!!! Nothing comes on my screen!!
I am NEW to Apple, so I am CLUELESS as to why this is happening or what is going on- not to mention EXTREMELY AGGRAVATED that I cannot find any tech support AT ALL- not on the phone, not on chat, not anywhere!!! I have waited almost 2 yrs to purchase a new computer- I chose an iMac, and this is the crap I get.
    Please help!!!!
    iMac 17inch   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   New

    Dawn,
Having suffered my share of 'difficult' products, I can understand your frustration. This is compounded by the financial restraint you exhibited for 2 years of saving. Your experience should not just be good, it should be exceptional.
There may be something wrong with your machine. The white light is on when the machine is booting or the display is sleeping. The light will softly flash on and off while the machine is sleeping.
The fan should be as quiet as possible, to the point of being a low rumble/whisper or not even heard. It sounds like your computer is stuck in a startup mode.
Calling Apple will get this issue resolved to your satisfaction in a timely manner. If you state the issues they should be more than helpful. You can try a few things for now.
Press and hold the power button on your machine for a while and see if it reboots.
If you look on this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303124
You will notice the instructions for zapping the pram (keys held down when you press the power button and held continuously) : Press Option-Command-P-R until you hear two beeps (release)
Try that next. Your machine should be restarting when you toggle the power button.
Another quick thing you may want to try is shutting down the machine, unplugging everything (every cable including the power cable), waiting about 2 minutes, then plugging in just the keyboard and mouse and starting the machine with the power button.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • How to restore machine using a TM backup on a usb hard drive from older imac to a brand new iMac?

My imac (the one that had a superdrive in it), had a broken superdrive and was sent for repair. Whilst being "repaired" the screen was broken. I now have a brand new imac albeit without a dvd drive. My question is how to I restore my the old TM back up which had been made to an external usb hard drive to the new imac. Help files say that I should not restore from a TM file to a different machine and that I should use migration assistant. Whilst I can see the external usb drive in TM it is not being recognised in Migration assistant when I click on back up from a TM backup on another machine or disk.
    Any ideas?
Just noticed that this new machine is running OSX 10.8.4  the broken imac was on mavericks

This is very simple first run Software Update on the new machine and get your machine upgraded to the most recent version of Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Install all other software updates Apple recommends in Software Update. Then care fully read Pondini's guide on using Migration Assistant located at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Your migrated data will be in a new account, to access it log into the new account.
Also DO NOT repeat DO NOTuse Wi-Fi to migrate data, if your TM backup drive uses USB, then connect it via USB and follow the on-screen instructions as described in Pondini's guide.

  • Slow performance, brand new iMac!

    Hello!
First, excuse my rusty English.. I hope you manage to read it
Main problem.. Adobe, PhaseOne and other intensive applications is veeeery slow on a high specced brand new iMac! Lightroom 5, PS CC and Capture One Pro 7 is what I use mostly.
I just got my brand new iMac 2014.2 (3.5/3.9 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 512GB flash disk and GTX780M), and its quite a lot slower than my other Win7 workstation. Other workstation specs: i7 4.2 GHz, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, GTX 580. I'm working on the same Raid-5 drive (USB-3) too, so I don't know why it's slower..
    What I experience:
Changing from "current" raw to next raw (while culling) takes several seconds, and my Raid-5 is done chewing long before I see the result on my monitor. I get the spinning beach ball while waiting for preview. I always render 1:1 on import and 1:1+standard size in menu, just to be sure. Adjustment brush is like dodging in PS v1.0 (NOT CS) when computers had less disk-space than we have cpu-cache today, awfully slow, and it "stutters". Moving/panning in 1:1 is very choppy, and sometimes I get the spinning beach ball while panning.. This happens in LR and CO.. Photoshop CC stutters or have to "think" when I try panning. These problems happens in 6 Mpix, 12 Mpix or 25 Mpix RAW files, and actually in some JPEGs too!
    I have done following:
I've tried 2003 and 2010 processing in LR, small change. Fixed permissions in OS X. Removed preferences for LR, CO and PS CC. Reinstalled LR/cloud apps and Capture One Pro 7. Increased camera raw cache from 15 to 50 GB. Followed Adobe's guide to make LR faster. Followed Capture One guides. Reinstalled (clean install) of OS X. I've tried all tips I could find in the forums around.. I have also tried placing RAW files on internal 512 GB disk to see if that helps on performance, but no change. Same story with camera raw cache, doesn't matter where it is.
Additional things.. I’ve also diagnosed the iMac with checkdisk, memcheck, logs, etc.. No problems as far as I can see.
I just changed my workflow from Win to OS X and I depend on this to work.. I currently have 4000 files from my last job waiting to be worked on, and I'm not finished until Christmas in this tempo :-(
If I can't get this working very soon, then I have to return this very expensive iMac and buy a new PC again..

  • Brand new imac Retina and can't enter Apple Diagnostics.  Doing it wrong?

I've had various issues with my brand new imac retina.  I've spoken with Apple Care about two of them (Finder icon issue; slow shut down) and we're working through it all trying to figure out if it's software and whether the current beta update will solve the problem when it comes out.  They've extended their 14 day exchange to 60 days for me while we sort it out.
All said, one thing they suggested was to run the Apple Diagnostics by holding down D upon booting.  I've tried running this, it comes to a screen wanting me to pick the language, and nothing happens.  It's like it doesn't do anything upon picking the language, just sits there.
The Sr. Tech I was talking with just said "that's strange" but with other things we were discussing he went about focusing on the other things.
I may try yet another separate call to discuss this with them but I thought I'd check here to see if anyone has encountered/solved this issue, see if I'm going about it the wrong way.
I'm holding down D and I'm connected by ethernet.  This is the new imac retina 5k, 2014.
    Thanks.

That's might nice of Apple.  Personally, I would not be sorting anything out on a brand new Mac.  I would be demanding a brand new replacement.  One that is suppose to work rigiht out the  box.

I'm holding down D and I'm connected by ethernet.
The techs wanted you to run Apple's Hardware Test.  See KB Article:  Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

  • Brand new iMac won't boot :-(

    Hi All,
I just got a brand new iMac. I did a clean install of Leopard, imported a couple of CDs into iTunes, and then thought I'd give Bootcamp a go.
I created the disk and the machine duly rebooted into Windows setup. As the installer couldn't see the Bootcamp partition (I was using XP without SP2). I told the installer to quit and reboot.
Now all I get is a hanging white screen when I power up my iMac. If i hold down the Alt key I get a mouse pointer which locks up after a couple of seconds and that's it.
    I've tried:
    - Holding down alt on bootup - this brings up a pointer which locks after about 2 seconds
    - Holding down alt+C - with Leopard in the drive - nothing happens
    - Zapping the PVRAM - AltCMD+PR" - this had no effect
    - Resetting the SMU - hold down power whilst plugging in - now all the fans are running at maximum speed
    - An open firmware update as per this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5984118
    Is the machine completely toast?

The same thing happened to me this last week. After talking to Apple on the phone for hours they decided that it was dead and declared it doa (even though it was working for a few hours before boot camp). I am getting my new one this week. I can promise you that boot camp will not be put used on this one.

  • Brand New imac  ... dead in the water ... SOS

I just opened up my brand new imac 3.06 duo core yesterday, started it up, all ok. Today I transfered all my settings from my old G4 using firewire and the Migration Assistance in the utilities folder. After transferring data, restarted imac and that's where the problem begins... It will not restart. Every time I restart it stays on the white screen with the grey apple and the clock spinning below it. I tried restarting holding down the D key and then selecting my start up disk, I also tried installing the software disk and reinstalling the software, no luck. What I need to do is do a complete erase and install back to factory settings. Any ideas? When I put in the disk it is not giving me any options.

    HI Dale,
I transfered all my settings from my old G4 using firewire and the Migration Assistance
If you transferred files from a previous PowerPC Mac to your newer Intel based iMac using the Migration Assistant, that could account for these problems To see if you have apps that require Rosetta, go here; Intel-based Mac: How to tell if an application is Universal
I tried restarting holding down the D key
Booting while holding down the D key will run the Apple Hardware Test. To prompt the Startup Manager window, boot while holding down the Option key.
What I need to do is do a complete erase and install back to factory settings. Any ideas? When I put in the disk it is not giving me any options.
Insert your install disc while holding down the C key.
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
You can run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) to check the startup disk for errors. Restart by going to the Apple Menu/Restart.

  • Brand new iMac, kernel panics

I've got a brand new iMac, which frequently crashes, and blames the kernel_task, coreaudiod, FileStatsAgent, PluginProcess or Rome Total War.
I've included the most recent kernel panic.
I've run the dianostics, which came back clea, no issues ( Does this mean I'm out of the woods regarding hardware issues? ).
    Any help appreciated.

Did this happen before 10.9.2? I have been having issues since 10.9.2 on my Early 2011 MBP and was able to definitively narrow it down to apple's graphics driver logic.
How did I come to this conclusion?
    - Boot from my carbon copy cloner bootable backup and open an app that requires the discrete GPU (photoshop), gfxCardStatus indicates discrete GPU activated. Result: No problem
    - Boot OS X without any startup items (If you have a problem with the automatic resume launching a discrete GPU requiring app before you get to quit .....hold SHIFT immediately after you start logging in)
    - Open the same app under 10.9.2. Result : Screen flashes, gfxCardStatus indicates discrete active, OS X logs me out.
    - Install standalone 10.9.2 package. Repeat steps. Result: SAME
    - Create new account (in case it has to do with something I am not seeing). Repeat steps. Result: immediate logout (no extensions active etc on the new account)
So now i have a ton of kernel panics and crash reports from the window server from repeatedly testing different variations of my hypothesis. Conclusion: issue with automatic graphics swicthing.
So what I'm saying is it is possible that you do not have a hardware problem, but was just unlucky enough to get an iMac /w 10.9.2 on it. If that's the case then I would just recommend holding off for a lil 'till a fix is released.

  • Brand new iMac will not boot, just make's funny "bonk" sound.

I have a brand new iMac (Intel, 20-inch flat panel). Just out of the box. Ran through set-up wizard. Used firewire to transfer files from an old CRT iMac. All was good for about an hour.
Tried to empty the trash. Finder says Trash was emptied, but, if I open the Trash, the 50-odd files I just deleted are still visible! If I try to select one, its icon immediately disappears. Hmmm....
I decide it's time to restart.
Upon restart, computer will not boot.
I push the power button. I hear the startup chime as usual. Screen lights up gray. But no apple logo on the screen. There is a long pause. Screen remains gray. Computer then starts making a soft "bonk" sound every 4-5 seconds. (Kind of hard to describe the sound, just imagine clipping the very first fraction of a second of the normal Mac startup chime, and repeating it every couple seconds.) This continues indefinitely.
If someone has experienced this, or has advice, please let me know your thoughts. Feeling rather bummed. Thanks in advance!!!
    iMac Intel 20-inch 2.16 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Boot from the Install Disk 1
I cannot boot at all (see my post above). The
machine just sits there with a blank gray screen.
I appreciate the article link, though. I've already
read it and it will make a great reference for the
future, provided I can get back to a place where this
    iMac actually runs.
Since you're new to Macs, I'm sure you don't realize that while your iMac is sitting there with only a gray screen, you can insert/push in "Install Disc 1" - and it will be accepted. Then press and hold down the power button until iMac shuts down. After waiting a few seconds until everything has settled, press power button and immediately upon hearing the usual Mac startup tone/chime/chord hold down the "c" key until you see the spinning progress indicator below the Apple logo. It will boot to the DVD, you will be able to use (from the Utilties pull-down menu) Disk Utility to "repair" the hard drive directory, then you will be able to quit the installation process, choose Startup Disk from that same Utilities pull-down, and restart your iMac:)
