Brand new Imac user having trouble importing photos (jpgs)

I am a brand new iMac user and am having trouble importing some of my photos into my new computer.
Here is my dilemma:
* All of my pics are jpgs that were shot using a sony DSC-W50 digital camera.
* All were backed up on my exteral harddrive from my old Sony PC.
* I loaded all of them onto my new iMac into the "Photos" area
* When I try to import them to the iPhoto library, I get a message that either says "already in the iPhoto library" or 'unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data"
* I can open all of the photos that I get this error msg on in other photo programs so I know the files are photos and are good.
HELP!

iPhoto is not an image viewer, it's a Database with built-in image viewer, lightweight editing and version control, and like any database, data needs to be imported. However, iPhoto will not import from the iPhoto Library Folder.
So, move the photos to the Desktop and then import them from there.
Here's what happens next:
iPhoto will make a copy of them in the iPhoto Library Folder. There they will be put into the Originals Folder. Here's how the iPhoto Library Folder is organised:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
If you need any more asistance post more.

  • I am having trouble importing photos, gets stuck on the same photo each time?!?

    I am having trouble importing almost 3000 pics from my phone to my computer. Start up disk should be fine, cleaned it up before I began.  Import gets stuck on the same photo each time I try the import.  I have had to force quit a few times, and it can't seem to get past that same picture near the end.  Please help?!? It never gives me an error, it just keeps spinning and nothing is importing.

  • Having trouble importing photos from Panasonic Lumix cameras. No error message 1 just has spinning ball, other can import using menu but ends with spinning ball. using 9.1.5 Mac OSX10.6.8. Have to restart to access iphoto

    Hi I am trying to import photos into iPhoto using two Panasonic cameras both Lumix (DMC TZ3 and DMC FZ30). Worked in the past no problem, I upgrade system when prompted and am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.1.5.  When I attach cable from camera to Mac with the DMC TZ3 I get the spinning ball and nothing else and have to force quite and restart to access iphoto again without the spinning ball, with the DMC FZ30, when I plus in the cable I get an icon on the desktop and can go into iphoto and import the photos that way.  When the photos have been imported I get the spinning ball again and have to restart the Mac to access iphoto without the spinning ball.  Photos do import though.
    Can anyone help, a really stupid, non-techie person who has no idea what she is doing, please?
    Thank you

    Try use a different cable.

  • News for Users having trouble ordering books

    I was having trouble like many others ordering books during the last 2 weeks. I was also concerned about pending charges on my bank account. I received a very detailed explanation and helpful suggestions today form Apple Support. I am posting this in hopes that it helps others and ends all the frustration.
    My name is Patrick and I'll be assisting you.
    I understand that you're having an issue placing a book order. I also understand that there were charges on your credit card statement that were eventually dropped.
    I reviewed the orders you submitted for the book titled "Honeymoon" and found that the file could not be opened. That is why your orders haven't processed completely. The size of the book shouldn't be an issue, so you don't need to change anything in it. Please keep submitting the order until you're successful. You may want to try during non peak hours so there'll be less traffic on your ISP's network.
    As for the multiple charges, when you make a purchase using iPhoto, Apple sends an authorization request to your credit card company for the approximate amount of the purchase. This is to verify that your account has sufficient credit to cover the amount of sale. It is a temporary authorization hold, not an actual charge. Most credit card companies remove authorization holds within 48 hours.
    Please note that even an unsuccessful attempt to purchase an item may cause an authorization hold, depending upon how much of the transaction was completed, and multiple attempts can cause multiple authorization holds.
    If you have any questions about whether an amount found on your online statement is an authorization request or a charge, or when the authorization hold will be removed from your account, please contact your credit card company or financial institution.
    To view your purchase history, visit http://www.apple.com/internetservices/yourorderstatus and sign in using your Apple ID and password.
    I hope this clears things up for you. Please accept my apologies for any frustration this has caused you. I want your experience with us to be the best possible. Have a pleasant day.

    It's really hard to say without seeing the form, and ideally being at the machine that it doesn't work with. I'd be happy to take a look at the form if you're free to send it to me: acroscript at gmail dot com

  • Brand New Apple User trying to import video files from FreeAgent External..

    hard drive. Previous Dell owner and now I have converted. I have files saved to my FA Drive in a .MOD version and cannot play them on my Apple. What do I have to do to accomplish this? I have a JVC Everio HD camcorder.
    Any help for a newbie would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

    Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    .mod are a JVC custom version of MPEG2 files. You should be able to play them in VLC. I would guess that your goal is actually to get them imported in such a format that they can be used in iMovie projects etc. It appears from this Apple article that many of the Everio models are compatible with iMovie 08 (you are out of luck if you wish to use the superior iMovie HD 6). I would simply suggest connecting the FreeAgent drive, load iMovie 08 and point it at the files.
    If you don't get anywhere I'd suggest posting in the iMovie forums as the chaps with real experience of video handling hang out there.
    BTW this forum is for the much older iMac (Flat Panel) models; as a new user I expect you have an Intel iMac.

  • HT201302 Having trouble importing photos

    When I try to import my photos & videos, I receive the following message "no new pictures or videos were found on this device" when in fact I have over 800.  How do i fix this?

  • I'm having trouble importing photos to my Ipad2

    I followed all the instructions, attached the iPad, selected the device and hit "photos," then selected a folder (73 photos) from my PC.  Now my iTunes says it's syncing to the Ipad but it also says (unendingly) "Accessing iTunes Store."  Is this what's supposed to be happening?  I have both the iPad and my iPod connected although the iPod doesn't show in iTunes.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
    (Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
    In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
    If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
    Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
    If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • New ODI User having trouble creating an XML Data Source...

    How's everyone doing? I'm new to the Oracle Data Integrator software. My goal is to take an XML message, do a bunch of mappings/constraints/etc. and integrate the appropriate data into an Oracle database. Seems like ODI is good for the job, but I'm running into some issues setting up the actual XML source file.
    I followed this guide: [ODI XML to Database Transformation|http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/fusion_middleware/ODI/ODIXML_to_DB_Transform/ODIXML_to_DB_Transform.htm], which was helpful, but since it used example XML files it did not go into how to use your own custom XML file.
    Let me start off by sharing the XML file I'm attempting to import:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <Money xmlns="http://xxxxx.oracle.com/schema/Money"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://xxxxx.oracle.com/schema/Money file:/C:/OraHome_1/oracledi/demo/xml/Money.xsd">
        <MoneyID>MoneyID0</MoneyID>
        <ContractID>ContractID0</ContractID>
        <EffectiveDate>2006-05-04T18:13:51.0Z</EffectiveDate>
        <MessageDate>2006-05-04T18:13:51.0Z</MessageDate>
        <ReversalIndicator>false</ReversalIndicator>
        <PriorMoneyID>PriorMoneyID0</PriorMoneyID>
        <Amount>0</Amount>
        <MoneyType>0</MoneyType>
        <ExchangeDetails>
            <CostBasis>0</CostBasis>
            <ExchangeType>0</ExchangeType>
            <MEC>false</MEC>
            <LoanAmount>0</LoanAmount>
        </ExchangeDetails>
    </Money>Pretty straightforward I'd say. Note that the XSD file it references DOES exist in that directory, so everything should be fine. So I go into Topology, select the "Physical Architecture" tab, right click "XML", click "Insert Data Server". I name my file "XML_MONEY", select the JDBC tab, and fill in the following fields:
    JDBC Driver: com.sunopsis.jdbc.driver.xml.SnpsXmlDriver
    JDBC Url: jdbc:snps:xml?f=../demo/xml/Money1.xml
    When I hit "Test", it gives me this annoying message:
    java.sql.SQLException: Could not generate the DTD because the file could not be created. Verify that you have write permission in the directory.
    I have no idea why. I definitely have permissions to write to that directory.
    I played around some more, and removed the junk at the top of the XML file, leaving the file with JUST XML tags. Now I get this error:
    java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 1
    What does this mean? I'm confused why this would be happening, because I a couple of days ago when I was playing around with a dummy XML file (with just tags) it connected just fine.
    If anyone can lend a hand I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm probably missing something stupid, so feel free to yell at me.
    Thanks!!

    hi , i will try to help u out....lets take a simple example
    create your own xml for example
    <pre>
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ROWSET>
    <ROW>
    <ENAME>SCOTT</ENAME>
    <SAL>15000</SAL>
    <LOC>INDIA</LOC>
    </ROW>
    <ROW>
    <ENAME>ROCK</ENAME>
    <SAL>25000</SAL>
    <LOC>USA</LOC>
    </ROW>
    </ROWSET>
    After that go to Topology manager create a data server in xml technology for example "EMPLOYEE"
    JDBC DRIVER : com.sunopsis.jdbc.driver.xml.SnpsXmlDriver
    JDBC URL : jdbc:snps:xml?f=C:/EMP.xml&s=EMP01
    Test it you will get Successful connection message.
    After getting this message apply the settings.Physical Schema window will pop up there give Schema as EMP01,Work Schema as EMP01 then in the context tab
    create a context and give the logical schema name it can be any name..here i am giving the my logical schema name as EMP01.Apply the changes.
    Create a model
    1.In Definition tab give the model name
    select Technology as XML
    Logical Schema as EMP01
    2.In the Reverse tab select the context which u have created in the topology manager
    3.In the Selective Reverse tab reverse all the tables.
    in the model you will be getting 2 datastores ROWSET,ROW
    Create an Interface
    Drag the ROW datastore into source
    I have crated EMP_TEST table in my oracle database Ename,Sal,Loc as columns and reversed it so that i can use EMP_TEST table as my target table
    Drag the EMP_TEST table in the Target datastore map the columns
    select IKM as SQL toSQL Append execute the interface the data in the xml will be loaded in to EMP_TEST table.
    </pre>
    Hope this helps u
    Thanks,
    praneeth.

  • I am having trouble importing photos into lightroom.  I get "could not copy the file to the requested location (195)

    any suggestions?

    I'm having the same problem as you.
    Lightroom 5.2 has been running for a year and now it's just stops importing from my CF cards.
    Is that the same problem, or a different problem?
    What is the error message?
    I've got Permissions set to allow me to do anything so, that ain't the issue either.
    This is often the first response and when we insist that we see screen captures of the Import dialog box and the permissions on the folder specified under "Destination", it turns out the permissions are not set properly.
    So, we need to see screen captures of both your Import dialog box and the permissions on that exact folder specified under Destination

  • Brand new iMAC keeps hanging

    Hi All
    I received my brand new iMAC today - having never had a MAC anything before - decided to switch as fed up of hanging, viruses etc on PCs and also need more multimedia options.
    Have set it all up it keeps hanging - for no reason i click on force quit and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't even do that - I am totally confused it has done it to me on MAC Office, iCalc, i photos, i tunes etc etc
    Do i have a dud machine am i doing something wrong???? Please help.
    Cheers

    Kazzaboobers,
    Welcome to the forum. Chances are you don't have a dud. In case you haven't read the manual I would recommend doing so before playing with your machine, you will be surprised what you learn.
    Also when you mention the machine is hanging please describe with a little more detail so we can understand exactly what you mean.
    You are covered by 90 days for free telephone support, if the problem persists take advantage of the support and give Apple a call. In the rare event you did get a dud they will replace the machine within 14 days of purchase.
    Last IMHO it is a good idea to get AppleCare, this gives you 3 years of phone support and an additional 2 years of warranty. You can find it online (Amazon for example) for less than Apple charges.

  • Trouble importing photos previously deleted from Elements Organizer

    I am having trouble importing photos from iPhoto into Photoshop Elements Organizer. When I try to import, it says "Nothing was imported. The files or folders selected to import did not contain any supported file types or the files are already in this catalog." The photos I want to import, I had previously deleted from the Organizer, so I think they are "already in this catalog" but I don't know how to find them.

    How are you attempting to do this? Step by step, what are you doing?

    What's the origin of this external drive? It sounds very much like it's a Windows-formatted (NTFS) drive which Macs can't write to. If you can, copy the files off the drive, reformat it as Mac format (using Disk Utility) and copy the files back. If you need to continue writing to it from a Windows PC, you should format it ExFAT in Disk Utility.
