Brand new ipod does nothing

I just got a new ipod--it is 1st generation, but it was unopened. i have a macbook pro. i opened up the nano and immediately connected it to my computer with the same usb connector that i use for my 60gb video ipod. the ipod logo showed up for a lititle bit, but the ipod wasnt showing up on itunes, so i reset it. now, when i try plugging it in nothing happens. the screen is blank and it wont restart at all. ive tried both usb ports on my macbook pro. ive tried reinstalling software (which i didnt think was necessay to have in the first place since i alread use an ipod on this computer). so can anyone help me out?

Leave it plugged in for an hour so to get a charge in its battery. It may be less reticent to work after that...

I Just BOught a new 30 GB White 5th Generation iPod and i plugged it into my computer and nothing happened i tried the other computers in my house and when plugged in nothing happened. The iPod isnt recognized in any way. Any way i can fix this?

Have you installed the latest iPod updater/iTunes/Quicktime?
Are you connected to a high powered USB port?
Have you tried the 5 R's?
Make sure those are all "yes".

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I bought a brand new ipod touch 5th gen, updated the software and now iTunes says "to allow access, please respond on your ipod touch" however the ipod has a black screen and pressing the buttons does nothing. how do i fix this?

As the title says, this is a brand new iPod touch bought from a store, I plugged it in a commenced the "setting up" process through iTunes on may iMac. It got to the stage where it said allow this computer to access the device (or something along those lines), i clicked yes, and then a message came up "to allow access, please respond on your iPod touch. however the ipod screen is black, and pressing the buttons doesn't work. How can i fix this? or do I need to return it?

You said you restored the iPod. Was the restore successful, that is, it went though all the steps without errors?
Try a restore to factory settings/new iPod if yuhave not doe so so far.
Are you using the headphones that came with the iPod? Are you inserting the plug fully
Have you tried another set of headphones in the iPod?
The speaker is not that loud.

If you are getting that message on a brand new Mac with nothing connected to the USB ports, take it back. It is broken.

Brand new ipod touch connected, device recognized, but nothing happens?

I bought a brand new iPod touch 2nd gen two days ago and as I was very excited to plug it into my computer, sadly, nothing happened. iTunes recognizes the device and can be seen under Devices, but NOTHING happens and there are no other functions to click on at all. No set up, just a blank white screen, and yet, the iTouch screen still says to connect it to iTunes which it already is....
I have reinstalled iTunes, restarted my computer many times, updated it to the latest iTunes version, and still this problem persists. Can anyone help me out please!

Go to the Store tab in iTunes and click on the Check For Available Downloads.

How does "borrowing" work? Does it require use of another app, other than iTunes, to get it on the iPod?
