Brand new Ipod mini won't charge

HI,
Apologies if this has been covered before - I'm posting for a friend who's just bought a brand new 4Gb ipod mini, and having synced her music and having had 1 week of good tunes on the go, it now won't charge.
If you plug the usb 2.0 cable into the ipod and the pc (yes, I'm sure the usb is usb 2.0 on the pc), it brings up the charging icon, but instead of animating the bars etc, it sits still, with one bar filled in. And doesn't appear to charge, as there is no power to turn it on.
Has anyone else encountered this??
I'm sure people will say try another cable, and to this end, I have a 3rd Gen ipod, and am going to try my firewire mains plug, will this work? as my friend doesn't have a mains plug yet - though she's ordered one.
Any other ideas?
Is it just that the battery is knackered - even though it's only a week old?
Help
Cheers all
Pete

Jeff,
Thank you for the info - I apologise for cross posting I've been inactive on the discussions pages for about 6 months and had forgotten - I also wanted a quick response, which I got thanks.

  • Brand new Ipod touch won't charge or turn on

I recently got a brand new Ipod touch. The first thing I did was plug it in to charge it. A red battery icon showed up on the screen. I left the ipod on the charger for hours and the icon was still red. It won't turn on either. I have tried connecting it to ITunes but the red battery icon just comes up whenever I plug it into the computer and it does not show up on itunes. I am new to the ipod touch so maybe I am doing something wrong, or is there a fault in the ipod??
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks!

    First try reset.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Brand new iPod Touch, won't charge!

    Hi there,
Have posted this under another topic but hope to get some more exposure here.
Just as a disclaimer, I work for a retail store in New Zealand. Have taken a returned iPod touch home to try and fix, but am stuck! This iPod still belongs to my employer however, needs to be restored to a re-sellable condition.
Basically, the iPod touch will not charge. It is forever stuck on the 'no charge' screen with the red battery symbol and the lightning bolt at the bottom. This is when it is plugged in (have plugged it in to a PC, my Mac and wall charger). When not plugged in, same symbols appear except with a plug symbol, pointing to the lightning bolt.
When plugged in, the iPod doesn't show up in iTunes or Disk Utility, same on the HP PC laptop I also tried it on.
I put the iPod into DFU mode and restored it to the latest firmware with iTunes on my Mac. However, once the iPod has finished restoring, iTunes tells me it will show up after rebooting but once the countdown has finished, the same stupid 'no charge' symbols appear.
By the way, this iPod has been left charging on two different wall chargers overnight, I have tried restoring it several times and still to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I am totally stumped.
    Cheers!

Well since it has not been charging on multiple computers i would take a look at replacing the usb cable. Something could not be connecting right or just needs to be replaced. If this has already been done it is starting to sound like a battery issue with the ipod.
    Hope this helps!!

  • Brand new IPOD Shuffle won't charge battery!

    What am I doing wrong???
I did download and install ITUNES, and added a bunch of songs that show in ITUNES,(that I put on the IPOD) and when I dock it, it blinks yellow, then goes to solid green. After I eject it, I try to turn it on, but, I get no light, and it won't play.
    Any ideas?

I am having a similar problem with my iPod shuffle 2G. I read that the shuffle would not charge properly unless it was plugged into a high speed USB port (which I later discovered my computer does not have). I bought an A/C adapter in order to charge it from the wall (not from Apple). I charged it overnight until the light turned green. I disconnected the iPod and turned it on; the light stayed green for two seconds, then went off, and the iPod does not play.
I contacted Apple Support, and the only suggestion they could offer was that the A/C adapter I bought is not the correct one. I am now waiting for a second wall charger to arrive, to see if that in fact is the case. The iPod did in fact sync and load songs with no problem despite not having a high speed USB port. Anybody else experience this?

  • Brand New IPod Mini - Can't mount iPod from IPod Updater

Just bought a brand new IPOD mini. When I try to use the IPod Updater, I get an error message "Can't mount iPod".
Windows XP Services shows IPOD services is started.
The IPOD appears in My computer as "Removalable Disk".
Also, my IPOD does not appear in iTunes.

This is a very reasonable strategy. It has been previously used for USB problems with battery charging.
See this link: The iPod Battery Unplugged..
A synopsis of it is as follows:
"For best results, try not to use computer ports to charge your iPod. USB is especially sensitive to how many devices are on it and what the resulting bus voltage is. It may even display the charging icon but not be adding much to the battery. USB versions prior to 2.0 will not charge your iPod (and probably be too slow for its other functions). Even USB 2.0 is limited to 700 milliamps and an iPod "likes" to see one full amp for charging, plus some to spin the HD while mounted. Some (early) iPod models will not charge from USB, period. Some PCs use 4-pin Firewire cables (all Macs are 6-pin) which carry no charging voltage, so they won't work at all for recharging and can allow your iPod to run down and cause serious problems while updating firmware, restoring, or loading songs. Both USB and Firewire require the iPod to be mounted by your computer as an external drive, which means the iPod's HD is spinning, using some of the juice that the battery might like to have. And if the computer sleeps or is turned off, the battery won't charge and in some cases will actually drain through the port circuits. Bottom line: if your ports are not doing a good job of charging your battery, use the wall adapter to charge for several cycles before questioning the battery's credentials. If you have a new iPod which only comes with USB, don't panic; it can work fine. But if you do experience problems, either take everything else off the USB bus (except mouse & keyboard) and/or get an AC adapter."

  • My brand new iPad mini won't rotate I have done factory reset still not working. If I lock and unlock on landscape or portrait it remains in that mode. Any ideas pretty sure I've tried everything suggested.

My brand new iPad mini won't rotate done factory reset still not working. If I lock and unlock on landscape or portrait it remains in that mode. Any ideas pretty sure I've tried everything suggested such as off/on, reset, reboot, double checked lock off. It did work and I changed wallpaper and stopped motion, not sure if this related

Reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. Your iPad will reboot on its own. You will have to enter all of the device settings again, but no data will be lost.
I eould not spend a whole lot more time trying to fix this, if the device is really brand new. I would take it back to where you bought it, bring the box, the charger, the cable and your receipt and if they can't get it fixed, return it and get another one.

  • My brand new ipod touch won't let me download apps.

My brand new ipod touch won't let me download apps.  I put in my password and then get a screen that says "Download Now".  I can't press the okay button to start the download.  What should I do?  All of the other buttons on the screen work, so I don't think it is broken.

Try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.

  • Ipod mini won't charge from mains.

My ipod mini won't charge from the mains lead or a dock but works fine with the usb lead. I've tried different leads, sockets and resetting it but nothing works. It's a pain because if I go away from home for any length of time, I need to take my laptop just to charge it up.
    ipod mini   Windows XP

I say try a different charger. When I wanted to avoid having to take my laptop everywhere, I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BNZLGE/ref=pdcp_etitle/002-2209999-2570423?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=172282
and it's worked fine in the six months I've had it... and besides it would cost under $10 to find the root of the problem, much more than Apple would charge, that's for sure.

  • Brand new ipod shuffles won't hold a charge

I've bought and returned 2 ipod 4th generation shuffles because they won't hold a charge for more than 1.5 hrs after I charged them overnight. Those were brand new ipods and I use them for the gym. Why aren't they holding a charge? Has anyone else had these problems? They are supposed to have a long battery charge.  I don't want to keep buying and returning ipod shuffles. My other ipod shuffles haven't lasted long either. The battery quality is very low. I might try a 3rd shot but I'm very frustrated.
Can anyone recommend another brand other than Apple?
    Thanks

When you are excercising with the Shuffle do you have it protected with a moisture resistant sleeve or case?  If not, there is a good possibility that moisture is making its way into the Shuffle and deteriotating its internal components including the battery.
You could test this out, by replacing the Shuffle a third time, charging it over night, and then seeing how long it lasts on a full charge without using it for exercise.

I've taken absolute perfect care of it and its been working fine, but I was just listening to music on it with the charger plugged in, and all of a sudden it just blacks out. Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple logo.

  • Brand new ipad 2 won't charge

Bought an iPad 2 in jan 2012.  In Dec 2013 it stopped charging.  Tried rebooting, lowering brightness and all the other tips but could not get it to reliably recharge.  Took it back to retailer who checked the iPad with 2 other chargers and decided there was a fault with the internal charging unit in the iPad. Under the shop guarantee, they replaced the ipad, but this doesn't charge either?  They did not replace the charging cable or plug. It's the original 10w charger.  Does anyone have any idea as to why a brand new iPad 2 will not charge with a 10w charger?

    1. Make sure battery is charged
    2. Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

  • Brand new iPad mini won't connect to FaceTime

My brand new iPad mini just stays on connecting when I try to call anyone. Any ideas?

Read this. As of april 16 any device that uses facetime must be updated to a certain level. So it may be as simple as you or the person you're calling needing to update your device to iOS 7.1.1

  • Brand New MacBook Air Won't Charge

I just bought a new Macbook Air 1.8 GHz (the more expensive version) and from the second I opened it, it would not charge. The only way I can use the laptop is if it is plugged in. When I look at the computer's info, it says BATTERY INSTALLED: NO CHARGING: NO CYCLE COUNT:0
What happened? Was it supposed to come with the battery installed? Should I send it back?

if the store is close take it back and ask for replacement, otherwise call and ask for replacement
you could call support and get it fixed under warranty...
U.S. iPod and Mac technical support: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
...but if it is brand new you have a reasonable expectation to get what you paid for, so going for replacement is the beter option

  • Brand New Macbook Pro Won't charge

I recently joined the Mac world, and purchased my first Mac, a Macbook Pro. I have had it less than 3 weeks and the battery won't charge. I have called the support line, several times and they had me take the battery out put it back in press 4 keys and restart worked a couple of times, but I had to do everytime I shut my computer down, not fun at all. Finally they sent me a new battery and that one doesn't charge either. I'm kind of frustrated with the entire process, I was thrilled to be advancing in the technology world but now am very disappointed with the service to help get this issues resolved. So now I have a product I can't use, brand spanking new laptop collecting dust, and the only solution they have for me is to drive 100 miles to an apple certified dealer to have them look at it, only open Mon - Fri. So know I have to take off work, drive way out my way to have someone look at my computer. But the catch is they might charge me even though I purchased the extended 3 year apple warranty. So know I'm back to using my PC. My thrill is gone. All I want is to use my laptop, and experience the Mac way, does anyone have any solutions. So far my experience with mac support is not too thrilling what's the purpose of purchasing the warranty and I recieve no help on their end. HELP?

that doesn't make any sense.... you have a 3 year warranty... they can't charge you... thats the point of the warranty!!
you don't have to drive out to drop your laptop off.... call apple care and they will send you a box in the mail so then you can put your laptop in it and send it back to them so they can repair what they need to repair.... you said that you can't use it anyways so i guess it wouldn't matter that you would be out a laptop for a few weeks....
I wouldn't let them say they cannot do anything for you, thats just ridiculous, you paid good money for your computer as well as a warranty... be persistent.
