Brand new laptop: Incredibly slow and laggy.

Hi,
My mum received a brand new laptop on Saturday (this exact laptop) it hasnt been overly used as yet but the laptop seems very VERY slow. Browsers take a good while to open, sites like Facebook take ages to load - Farmville 2 for example takes an age to load and even when it does its very laggy.
Why is this band new laptop so slow? Nothing has been installed on it other than Firefox and the spec of the laptop seems pretty reasonable. Windows 8 is horrible but thats another issue.
Can anyone help or give any advice?

Do you open farmville from the laptop or from the internet? Have you checked the speed of your LAN or wireless?
Which are you using wireless or LAN NIC?
When you open application on the laptop is it slow?
Trying to determine if it is the connectivity is slow or if it is your laptop.
Also what version of AMD Catalyst are you using?
Here are some things you can do to make sure you are fully updated.
Make sure you have the most current .NET Framework 4.0
Make sure you have the most current DirectX 11.2
Make sure all of the other Microsoft Updates are complete as well. Missing Updates can cause issues.
Uninstall the AMD Catalyst you have now, before installing the Beta version.
I know most are trying to use the AMD Catalyst 13.9, which is used Windows 8 64-bit.
The AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta9.2 Driver can be downloaded from either of these two links:
AMD Catalyst™ 13.11 Beta9.2 for Windows®

  • Brand New Macbook Being Slow and Loud

Every time I start up my macbook pro it runs really slow and the fan is really loud. When I looked in the activity monitor it said kernel_task is using up 300 % of the CPU. What is kernel_task and is there a way to slow it down?

Is this  BRAND NEW Mac? Or one you are calling Brand New (Big difference).
If it is Brand New, like you bought it yesterday or a few days ago take it back and get a full refund and buy another that works correctly right out of the box.
But I suspect it is a few weeks/months old, which makes it NOT brand new. So if that is the case then you need to reset the SMC and PRAM.
Do a google search for how to do that.

  • My MacBook Pro has been incredibly slow and laggy

So my MacBook Pro has been pretty much inoperable for a couple of months. The computer crashed and afterwards it would constantly lag. I did a fresh install thinking it would solve the problem, but it did not do anything. I took the computer to the Genius Bar, and they claimed that it was because I was running too many apps and that the computer was slowing down (doesnt make too much sense considering its a mid 2012 and on a fresh install) and then promptly sent me home. When you flash the memory in the beginning, sometimes it will be less laggy for a second, but then start lagging a couple minutes after computer use (this is still on a virtually clean install). I took their suggestion and added a SDD thinking it might help. Nope. So the hardware tests/diagnostics are all normal and I have no idea whats going on. It literally took me 10-15 minutes to run the EtreCheck and copy into mail so I could post these results from another computer. I will love anyone forever if they could explain to me how to fix this.

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • Laggy touchpad on brand new laptop

Hi everyone. I got a new HP Stream 13inch touch screen laptop just yesterday.  I realized today that the touchpad (I don't have a wireless mouse of any kind) has been a little slow and laggy. It hasn't frozen up or anything, it's just laggy. Sometimes it will shift in another direction the second I stop using it. It's kinda annoying me and also worrying me, since it's a brand new laptop.  Earlier today, I noticed it was doing this, and I restarted my laptop. After that, it was working just fine and I thought it was just one of those glitchy things that happen randomly. But it's happening again right now and Idk what to do. I don't want to have to restart my laptop every single time.  Please help! This is my 3rd laptop already and I don't want something bad to happen to this one, too.

I just got a brand new laptop and I can't seem to put music onto my iPhone - help? I'd really rather not completely empty my iPhone in order to have it agree with this new laptop. How do I get them to talk to one another and let me put my music on my iPhone?

  • Can somebody diagnose why my new MacBook Pro is so slow and laggy?

I just bought this MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) a month ago and it had been performing very well until last night.  I tried to stream a hockey game through Chrome and the browser crashed.  I didn't think it was a serious issue at first; I tried to force quit Chrome but everything just slowed down even more.  Eventually I just shut it down by holding the power button, hoping that it would be fine once I started it back up.
But it wasn't fine.  It took forever to boot up, and once it did, everything was slow and laggy.  There is delay using the trackpad and keyboard, applications are taking ages to open and sometimes won't respond, the color wheel is popping up for minutes at a time, etc.  It even seems like the internet itself is slowed down; I've tried different browsers in different locations of varying internet connections and they've all been very slow to load pages.  It's like the whole machine suddenly caught the flu or something.
I tried disk utility, but it says there's no problems.  The activity monitor doesn't show any significant CPU usage, and even after I cleaned the caches for Safari and Chrome, all the problems still persist.  I thought it might have caught a virus or some kind of malware, but I've been told that's highly unlikely.  Could it have something to do with Chrome or Flash (I was trying to update the latest Flash plug-in or something before the browser crashed)?  Like I said, the machine's fairly new, so not much of the RAM is used up.  Could anyone help me figure out what's wrong?

  • Re: Screen full of finger prints on brand new laptop

    Hi
I bought a brand new laptop from a well known store when I opened it the screen was full of finger prints so I exchanged it for the same model and that 1 was the same and looked like it had been wiped with a damp cloth and 1 else had this problem is it the stores fault or Toshibas fault.
    Thanks

    Thanks for reply.
I have had 3 of these laptops now as the first one developed a fault but it was sealed and the adaptor and plug were sealed in a plastic bag, the second 1 was sealed but the plug and adaptor wasnt in a bag, and was also in a different box than the first 1.
Now the 3rd one is in the same box as the first it was sealed but the plug and adaptor wasnt, at the moment I have a complaint with the store were I bought it because even though they were sealed.
I feel that the 2nd and 3rd had already had a system restore but have been told they were new so I dont know whos at fault the store or Toshiba.
I dont think I should have to clean a brand new screen it might sound like nothing to some people, but I bought new and expect new

  • Clicking noises on brand new laptop.

Hi, I bought a HP Pavilion 15-e 013sa on Monday from Curry's and when home I noticed it was making quiet clicking noises on the left (or middle). I took it back to the shop and was given a new one to pick up today. Got it home and it's making the same noise.
Is this common of this model? It's really getting to me now and I have a horrible feeling when given a replacement it will do the same.
    Thanks.

I've never heard a laptop make this particular noise which is why I am worried.
And yes, hard to check without hearing the noise, it's just a low tapping/clicking that sounds like it's coming from the left but when you turn the laptop it's the middle.
It doesn't sound like a noise a brand new laptop should be making.
Thanks for the reply, I'm going to take it back in tomorrow and get one of their tech guys to check it.

why is my ipod so slow and laggy? i have lots of space on it, my history is deleted, i dont have multiple apps running! I have an iPod 4th Gen for about 2 years now and I don't know what to do.... Please help

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Hi I just lost my brand new laptop in a taxi. Can it be tracked? Thanks.

"...I just lost my brand new laptop in a taxi..."
left not lost. Happens all the time. I found an iPhone once in a taxi and someone once someone left one in Starbucks. Those returns were easy. I would follow steve369's advice, call the taxi company and hope for the best. Good luck. Next time when in a taxi or limo maintain the bag strap across your body.

  • Slow and laggy scrolling when using a touchscreen, any fix for this?

I'm using FF on a touchscreen "flip" laptop and scrolling is choppy and laggy!
In IE11/Chrome/Opera12&20 it's smooth. Any one know how to fix this, I've tried the SmoothWheel and YASM add-ons and they only made things worse.
IE, Chrome and Opera is like browsing and scrolling on a HTC One m8/iPhone5s and FF feels like using my old Nokia 5800 from 2008.
FF have a lot of customization features that Chrome and Opera 20 doesn't have and Opera 12 is no longer being upgraded/supported, so I would like to be able to continue using FF.

I have, it was just showing up because I hadn't rebootet after upgrading from 12 to 13. I have tried booting FF in safe mode, with and without hardware acceleration & smooth scrolling. Scrolling (horizontally and vertically) and zooming is still slow and laggy.
I tried FF 28.0 Beta with the Metro(Modern) mode, and thats nothing I'll use, at least until you can use plug-ins/add-ons. I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro not RT.

  • Captivate 5 Trial Insanely Slow and Laggy

    Hello
I have recently been tasked with evaluating Adobe Captivate 5 for our company. I downloaded and installed the trial and have looked through the tutorials. However, I've noticed that the interface is ridiculously slow and laggy when using the software. And I mean PAINFULLY slow. For example, I'll open up a new project template, and simply inserting an image placeholder or text placeholder and dragging into the position I want it on the canvas takes 5-10 seconds. I'll drag my mouse to where I want it, then I'll have to wait 5 seconds before the object is actually moved. Meanwhile, the program is completely unresponsive. Honestly it feels as if I'm running this software on a Pentium 486. This only happens when doing any sort of operation on the canvas. I can navigate the menus at normal speed.
Is this program supposed to be this laggy/unresponsive? It is insanely frustrating to use, in fact, I wouldn't even deem it usable in this state...
    PC Specs:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.50 GHz
    4GB RAM
    nVidia Quadro NVS 290
Windows XP Pro with SP3 and all updates
I use Photoshop all the time, and it runs beautifully. So do all other programs. I can't explain why Captivate would be so horribly laggy?

Definitely odd! Not a good way to start a product trial, that's for sure.
In any case, I ended up installing it on another computer that was relatively untouched in terms of software (only basic stuff installed, compared to my machine). And it worked basically how I expected it to, very smooth with no interface lag.
So that begs the question, what is installed on my workstation that causes Captivate to go nuts? It's ONLY Captivate too. I can have JUST Captivate open, or I could have 20 other programs open, and no matter what it lags like crazy when I do anything in it. Even switching between programs or pulling up the start menu takes several seconds when going from Captivate to something else. Whereas if I'm in any other program (including Photoshop CS5), Windows responds with its normal swiftness.
I've already uninstalled several video editing programs and other software, with no luck. I guess next to try is my AV software...
