Brand new MacBook - DVD drive loads with clunk, clunk, clunk!

Hi all,
I have set up my new MacBook - very happy so far. This morning I went to load some software via the DVD drive and was shocked at the noise that was made whilst the DVD was loading into the slot and settling - at least three unusually loud clunks. The new iMac I have loads discs silently, so I was thrown by this noise. Does anyone else have this problem? It sounds like something is in the mechanism (there wouldn't be) and that something is about to break.
This is two days old and this is the first time I have used the DVD drive.
Thanks in advance!

me too i got a wii (its the only other slot loading disk i have) its silent and pulls the disk in its self very sleek. like you im disapointed at the extreme noise of the loader but that maybe the price for the slim design? need to see if its the same on a macbook pro?

  • Brand new Macbook Pro not pairing with Apple Keyboard and mouse!

Hi all, I have a brand new Macbook Pro and an older wireless Apple Keyboard and Mouse (that were being previously used with my imac G5).
Now I want to use these for this macbook. I am finding that they are being recognised but not pairing up?
Do you need to stop the previous pairing with the imac before they will pair with the Macbook?
Or do I need to update specific software? (I would have thought it has all the necessary updates already installed).
    I am running Snow leopard.
I have brand new batteries in the keyboard and mouse.
I really appreciate any helpful advice. Sorry if the answer is obvious!
    Thanks

Hi there, i had a problem pairing an Apple wireless keyboard with my MacBook pro but managed to solve it.
The default passkey option in Bluetooth setup assistant is 'automatic' which will (if the MacBook can 'see' the keyboard in the first instance) then say something like 'your device may prompt you to enter the following passcode 1234 5678'
Obviously the keyboard doesn't provide any feedback - I went ahead and typed the number and hit the return key a number of times - the MacBook then displayed a 'pairing failed - you may have entered the incorrect passkey' message.
What i was doing wrong was keying only numbers - when i keyed 1234[SPACE]5678 + RETURN pairing worked.
I had thought the 'gap' in the passcode was to make it easier to read, not that it implied a space in the passcode.
    Hope that helps.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram lagging in the simplest tasks

I received a brand new 13 inch macbook pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram (16 gb) about two weeks ago. I was expecting it to do tasks faster than its predecessors (the macbook pro which came directly before it, which my father owns, and the early 2009 which is now a family computer), but became dissapointed when it began crashing basically as soon as i started using final cut pro, and ever since it has been lagging everywhere else! I have check my activity monitor regulary due to this issue and have noticed "kernel_task" taking a large percentage of CPU (when im not using the computer all that much around 10%) and it uses 1.5gb of ram upwards constantly without fail! I am aware that this is the operating system so i dont really want to fiddle around with it but it does sound a little bit high to me. Originally it was slightly tougher work on final cut that would crash it, hence why i haven't seriously questioned it until now, but currently i cannot even move my curser around without getting the spinning beach ball of death! Please help me!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • After installing brand new Macbook hard drive, boot to disk shows a flashing folder with a question mark

I had to install a new hard drive for my macbook after my last one had obviously crashed and was making clicking noises. The problem is I can't install OSX on my new one and I'm getting extremely frustrated. What could be going wrong? I've reset PRAM and done everything I could find suggested online.

Have you tried inserting the Snow Leopard Install disc and using Startup Manager to select the Snow Leopard disc as the startup disk? Once you get started up from the Snow Leopard Install disc, the rest of the instructions can be found in the manual for your MacBook Pro. Here are the ones for mine:
Installing Mac OS X and Applications — New Hard Drive
    from http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/MacBook_13inch_HardDrive_DIY.pdf
To install Mac OS X and the applications that came with your computer, follow these steps:
    1.          Start up from the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your computer, and choose your language.
    2.          From the menu bar, choose Utilities > Disk Utility.
    3.          Open Disk Utility and select the new drive in the list to the left. Note: If you are formatting the primary drive, use the Disk Utility program on the Install disc.
    4.          Click the Partition tab.
    5.          Click on Options, and verify GUID is selected if this is the startup drive.
    6.          Name the volume “Macintosh HD.”
    7.          Apply the change by clicking the Partition button.
    8.          At this point, either
    •          Quit the Disk Utility application, and proceed with the Mac OS X installation. Follow the
onscreen instructions. After selecting the destination disk for installation, continue following the onscreen instructions. Your computer may restart and ask you to insert the next Mac OS X Install Disc 2.
    or
    •          Leave the Disk Utility application open, and restore the backed up files from the image
you created before removing the hard drive.
    Installing Applications
To install just the applications that came with your computer, follow the steps below. Your computer must have Mac OS X already installed.
    1.          Back up your essential files, if possible.
    2.          Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your computer.
    3.          Double-click “Install Bundled Software Only.”
    4.          Follow the onscreen instructions.
    5.          After selecting the destination disk for installation, continue following the onscreen instructions. Your computer may restart and ask you to insert the next Mac OS X Install Disc 2
    6.          Restore the data by reinstalling the backed up files from your backup to the new drive.

  • Brand new iPhone 4s pre-loaded with iOS 5.0.1 and no wi-fi and it forgets contacts. I've tried all the described resets to no avail. I'm really regretting I bought this thing.

The wi-fi will see the networks, but I cannot join them whatsoever.  I've tried turning off bluetooth, location services, etc.  I've tried various resets described on the web, but none of them seem to affect it.
And now today, I go to send a txt message and the history lists nothing but phone numbers.  Even though you look and the information in the contact list is the same.  I txted my girlfriend this morning and she said it came from my hotmail address?!
I'm very frustrated already and I've only owned this iPhone for a day.  This iPhone 4s is my first apple product, and to say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

There is no hard or soft iPhone reset. There is just a reset, which is similar to a computer restart.
Any error message provided when trying to join any of the 4 open networks at your workplace?
If no change after resetting network settings, the next step is restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If the same after doing this, your iPhone has a hardware problem especially if everyone else with no issues connecting at your workplace have iOS devices.
Regarding where an iMessage is shown as being sent from, on your iPhone go to Settings > Messages > Receive At > Caller ID.
What is selected for your iMessage Caller ID?

I have a similar problem: I switched from mac mail to Outlook 2011 as the default client, and want to switch back. Mailto links (eg from browser etc) default to Mail.  However, when I try to email a Word document as an attachment, it continues to open Outlook.  Outlook has a button in its prefs for making it the default client, but I don't see a way to turn this pref off in either Outlook or in Word.

  • Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air. In bootcamp i allocate the partition then i click install and bootcamp will not see the disk.

Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (on my MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air via remote disk. In bootcamp (on my air) i allocate the partition, then i click install, and bootcamp will not see the disk from my macbook pro's drive. How do i get the bootcamp assistant running on my MB air to automatically find the disk in my macbook pro with the ISO image of windows 7? The remote disk on my air can find the cd but bootcamp will not begin installing it. Anyway to do this without buying the damned usb drive?

I don't know first hand if you can use the Remote Disk option with Windows but as of 10.7.2 you can now use BCAssistant to make a bootable USB (thumb drive or external disk) W7 installer with the Boot Camp drivers installed also. Have you tried that yet?

I messed up badly by trying to restore my brand new macbook pro by doing restart then command R and choose disc utility repair now when I start ,all I get is the white screen with a folder and a question mark,What can I do???help please

Can you still boot to the Recovery partition using Command and R whilst booting? Or did you wipe the Recovery partition as well?
If your Recovery partition is still intact, you can simply boot to it and reinstall the OS via the Internet. If you wiped the Recovery partition, you can hold down Command, option and R keys whilst booting and boot into true Internet Recovery mode. You'll be able to reformat the hard drive, erasing all partitions (format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a dingle GUID partition) and then reinstall the OS that shipped with your machine.
Note that you should use a physical Ethernet connection when restoring over the Internet - it's three times slower if you use wifi.
Try your Recovery partition first and if that doesn't work, use Internet Recovery.

  • I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. Is it Lion?

I have set up a Netgear dual band modem which works well with the iPhone and an older MacBook, but with this brand new MacBook it asks for a password every time I reopen the computer and open safari. As you can imagine this is very annoying. It says I am not connected to the internet and offers me a choice of nearby networks including mine and then asks for a password when I select it. Why does it do this with our new MacBooks (also with my son's brand new one) and not with the iPhone, iPad and older MacBook? They happily automatically connect to our network after entering the password just the once.

Sig, I appreciate you trying to be helpful. I have no idea what issues you were having or what issue exactly pgrounds has been having. Your assumption that everyone's set up is the same as yours is false however. There are many many documented WiFi issues that are a result of Lion installs. Many have been solved by 10.7.1 and 10.7.2. Others have been solved by a large variety of work arounds. Others have not had their issues solved yet.
I am one of those. I have an IT background, and I spent the better of five hours digging up workarounds and attempting all of them. For the benefit oh anyone who is having similar issues, I have posted links to all of those workarounds here. None of them worked in my case, but hopefully they will help pgrounds or others.
So, once again, if you have a new idea, I'd love to here it. But if it has already been posted in one of these links, it's not helpful, let it go.

  • I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked on all open. why?

I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked previously on all open. Can anyone tell me why?

You have a choice as to whether or not applications in Lion like Word or Preview (or even Safari) save and re-open previous documents or windows... just hold down the option key while quitting a program and when you re-open it you won't get the previous documents or windows when you re-open the application. You can see this by selecting the open program in the menu bar and when holding down the option key the quit function will change to quit and discard open windows. This feature in Lion is referred to as "Resume" and is great if you want to restart an app and return to what you're doing (for example in Safari re-opening existing windows and tabs from your previous session). You still have the option to close individual windows within an app before quitting and they will not re-open when the app is launched again.
This Resume function is not related to saving your work (a word or text document for example). This is handled by Lion's "Auto-Save" and "Versions" functions. See http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Hopefully this is the complete answer you're looking for.

  • Why did my brand new macbook pro come with Snow Leopard instead of Lion?

I JUST bought a brand new Macbook Pro assuming that it would come with Lion, but it didn't. My brother who just bought an Air the day before me got Lion with his computer. Shouldn't new computers come with new software? I'm confused. Can anyone help me?

  • Trying to set up my brand new MacBook Pro and it does not connect with the wifi network I have selected for this purpose. Nothing wrong with the wifi as both my iPad and iPhone are happily connected. Suggestions for connecting to the wifi network accepted

Setting up my brand new MacBook Pro and it will not connect to the wifi network. Nothing wrong with the network which is happily working for my iPhone and iPad! Suggestions accepted for making this connection.

Fixing this is a two step process:
    1) System preferences > WiFi/Airport ...
... check [√] Ask to join new networks
"Known networks will be joined automatically.
If no known networks are available, you will
be asked before joining a new network."
    2) Remove unwanted networks from the list of "known" networks under
    System preferences > WiFi/Airport > (Advanced) > | Airport/WiFi pane ...
Close the window and save changes. If no joy, do a restart to ensure you are playing under the new rules.

  • My brand new MacBook Pro won't turn on. What's the deal with this?

I got the thing yesterday. Sat down with it last night and everything started up fine. I set up my account and then it was time for updates. Naturally, I said yes to the updates. They downloaded, they installed, and that was the last time my brand new MacBook Pro turned on. I've checked to see that the battery is fully charged. I've tried plugging into other outlets. I've tried removing the battery and the power cord and pressing the power button for 5 seconds. Nothing has worked. When I put my ear up to it while pressing the power button, I can hear it try to start and get about 2-3 seconds in to start up and then a click and nothing. Does anybody have any idea what the heck has happened here?
