Brand new MBP with a problem...

We just bought a 15" MBP 2.0 today for my wife and had them install an extra gig at the store. We brought it home and she immediately began downloading the updates. While downloading she was poking around with Safari. About 3/4 of the way through the updates she got a windowshade effect over her screen and a warning saying she needed to restart (we only know PowerPC's so this one was new to us). After manually restarting she got an "OSX quit unexpectedly" warning (never seen that one either!) and a kernel panic dialog. Here's the log--
Mon May 15 16:38:07 2006

So- do we worry? Do we continue with updates, and will they solve the problem? Thanks in advance!

Despite the fact that you didn't find my earlier reply helpful...... Stop press - actually fair enough as I didn't address the software update issue.
The ram is a user installable part. Apple have instructions on the website
e.g. here.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303491
You should also run the Apple Hardware Test from your install Discs. Kernel Panics are usually hardware related. If ram is faulty, it can show the fault only intermittently (which is why many people run the test in loop mode for a few hours) and so you may be saving the problem for a later and perhaps more critical juncture.
Best of luck.

  • Brand new MBP with display problems.Ghosting & Red Pixels

Bought a MacbookPro at the apple store in Santa Monica,CA as a gift for sister in law who lives inNepal. When we got to Nepal and she started the computer for the 1st time, the display was ghosting, everything that was gray or blue was red tint, & every highlight was red.Ranthe Hardware test & showed everythingis fine. Would like to exchange for a new machine, but it is so far and dont know when we coming back, any suggestions for repairs, what the problem may be?
    Appreciate the help.

It looks like a graphics issue. Download gfxCardStatus and try switching graphics mode once. You might get it to work in one of the modes until you can get it repaired or exchanged.

Help!!! Brand new MBP with Santa Rosa Kernel Panics when started with external HD firewire 800 after 20 sec...
I don't know what it could be???
    Do you???
    Thanx
    Jay

I'm actually having a similar issue and I don't think its related to networking at all.
I'm currently working in a corporate environment where we deploy pre-built OS X images to machines. I recently upgraded my images to 10.4.10 before we got our first Santa Rosa machine. This image was built on a MacPro and worked on all Intel Macs down to a MacMini CoreSolo. When I deployed my prebuilt image to the SR MBP, it caused a kernel panic immediately.
Further investigation revealed previous builds of OS X, including 10.4.10 upgraded from any other model Intel Mac will kernel panic the SR MBP. Going backwards the SR Build of OSX will not work on any previous model Mac, as any other build typically does, but causes severe graphical distortion, as if it does not have the display drivers for the other Macs.
To make a long story short, I think your issue comes from the fact that your external hard drive has an older build of OS X 10.4 than the SR MBP will run (even though you may have upgraded it to 10.4.10). Anyone who can corroborate my story with some more testing, please chime in.
I haven't found a solution for this issue yet other than keeping a seperate Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo image for my deployments.

  • Re-initalizing a brand new MBP with 10.4.10

I bought a 17" MacBook pro from a reseller as a anniversary gift- received week of 10/1. I initalized it with all of my wife's settings from her old MBP's HD (recovered after it was damaged). Now unfortunately, she was just provided a new PC laptop by her employer, so I thought I could return to the reseller. Whoops, they have a fat (20%) restocking fee, since I bought extra RAM (total:3gb) and a 3-year warranty. So, now I guess it goes on ebay. Technically, this beauty's new in the box, but I initalized it- went through all the settings procedures etc. Here's the question:
Do I go get the latest software (10.4.10- what is on this MBP now) and re-install (wiping clean the HD)? Will this return to technically new condition? Didn't it automatically register its serial number to Apple at initialization? If I sell it with the new system software and a buyer goes through the process will they get a error message or might Apple decline to re-register? Is this a legitimate concern? What should I do?

Just reinstall the OS from the original DVD using clean install and it will restore it to as sold. Upgrade to 10.4.10 if you like as a courtesy or not as you desire.
The serial number is moot as you can sell a mac and even the warranty goes to the next user, no sweat from Apple at all.
Registration is just a courtesy not a warranty requirement.
NB you may get that 20% less on eBay anyway, but that's your choice. Craigslist in your town if there is one often gets more dough, no commission and local buyers and not Paypal etc.

  • Bought logic pro 9.1.7 online for new MBP with mountain Lion, but asked for serial number. Where could I get SN?

How can I get the SN for an online version of Logic Pro bought from AppStore?
    Thanks!

good news. The trick is to delete the "logic pro 9" by dragging the App from Finder->Applications to trash bin, and re-doanload and re-install it again. Now it's happily downloading 19GB contents without asking for SN.
Thanks Pancenter for your message. This is is brand-new MBP with Retina display, and I didn't find or delete and reg file for logic. Simply delete the app under installation (not in the launch pad, see above) and re-install. It works for the 2nd try. It could be a SW integration bug.

  • New MBP with iPhone-like audio inputs. Do I need special adaptor?

I have a brand new MBP with the iPhone audio inputs/outputs. Do  I need a special adaptor to use the speakers I was using before or can I just plug them in? How about for a microphone. IIRC those old ones were RCA plugs?

just realized i had made another post here long time back and it has a reply that covers what i need.

  • FaceTime problems on 3 brand new MBP 13 Retina, Apple has given in

    Hi All,
After recieving 3 brand new machines (MBP13 Retina) in Dec 2013 and Jan 2014, Apple does not believe they can deliver a proper working brand new machine. They also won't look into the problem and hope i can accept this faulty machine.
Is that what Apple is turned into? A company that doesn't believe they can fix their own machines? Or do they not care anymore about their customers and their product?
The person I'm facetiming with cannot hear me when we talk at the same time. My (3 brand new, but all 3 faulty) machines will mute me, so the other party cannot hear me. It is back to the walky talky ages again, 'over'.
Since I'm a great believer of Apple, I cannot believe they won't fix this problem and just keep on selling and delivering brand new MBP 13 Retina machines that don't work.
Does nobody at the Apple company care anymore, is there no company pride?

after a week of working on this problem the last straw was spending  3 hours being helped with this problem by 1mb.com after which time they asked me either to take out a years  support at £129 or pay for help from a better qualified technician! As I only received my IPad last week I am going to send it back tomorrow. why doesn't Apple respond when it is obvious from all the discussions that there is a problem? Considering the price of the iPad I feel thoroughly disillusioned and cheated as well as frustrated by spending so many hours to no avail. this was not the only problem I've encountered but it is the one I've wasted most time trying to resolve./

Thanks, Ian. Yeah, that's how I do it now...or with the controls in the left side pane. Still, I would have liked that quick on-the-spot edit capability...especially while sketching.
    Ian Turner wrote:
Sorry Mark, you are out of luck as it does not do that - it works the same as L8. The way I would achieve that with more accuracy and control would be to route all the tracks you want to fade to a Bus then use volume automation on the bus. To do this you will need to add a standard audio track, then re-assign it using (Control Click on the track header) to the Bus track. You can then automate volume/plugins etc on the Bus track.

  • Aperture 3 not working on brand new MBP???

Just tried to open Aperture 3 on my brand new MBP and I get this error message:
    Dyld Error Message:

I downloaded A3 from the Mac Store, I've deleted it and re-installed and still get the same message. My MBP is running 10.6.8.
Any ideas, hope you can help.
    Thanks!

Hi, Thanks! The solution on the Macrumors forum worked! A plugin manager issue!
I've copied the solution below for anyone else who may run into the issue.
Turns out it's a simple fix.
For those with the same problem:
    1. Navigate to: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
    2. Delete the PluginManager
    3. Get a new copy of the PluginManager. (You can copy one from a friends macbook) or use the one hosted here: http://qvenon.com/files/PluginManager.zip
    Thanks again!

  • Magic mouse lag on brand new MBP

    Hello,
I received my MBP 15" (Mid 2012) several days ago. But my Magic Mouse doesn't work very well with it. The cursor lags every several minutes to one hour or two, and lasts for several seconds to several minutes every time. I don't mean that the movement is slow - when it happens, the cursor doesn't follow the movement of the mouse very well, it seems 'jittery'. The cursor may "jump" to the destination 0.3~1 second after I moving the mouse. I tried everything I can do but the problem is still not solved. Here are what I've tried:
    * Setting my router to 5ghz band
    * Turn the mouse off and on.
    * Turn the mouse off, replace the batteries to new ones, and turn on.
    * Restart the computer.
    * Remove the mouse from the list of Bluetooth devices, and pair again.
    * Reset PRAM and SMC.
    * Disable WIFI.
    * Unplug everything in my room that has a wireless receiver, including Xbox, Apple TV, etc, and remove the batteries of their controllers.
None of the above works! However, I also have a Magic Trackpad which also uses Bluetooth but it works fine. I tested the Magic Mouse on my old MacBook Pro and it works without any problem. The distance between the mouse and the laptop is less than 2ft.
Mouse still works fine on my old 2010 MBP.
Brand new MBP 15", 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM.

I had the same problem with my new Retina Macbook Pro and my Magic Mouse that worked fine on my previous 2010 Macbook Pro.  At work I don't have a wifi network so I share my ethernet connection via wifi so I can get internet on my iPhone and iPad during the day.  After reading this thread I tried turning off the internet sharing and it has cleared up all lag issues with the mouse.
Just thought I'd share my fix.  Hopefully Apple can clear up whatever issues are causing this so I can get wifi back to my devices at work.

I have a similar problem: I switched from mac mail to Outlook 2011 as the default client, and want to switch back. Mailto links (eg from browser etc) default to Mail.  However, when I try to email a Word document as an attachment, it continues to open Outlook.  Outlook has a button in its prefs for making it the default client, but I don't see a way to turn this pref off in either Outlook or in Word.

  • Kernel Panic and a strange sound on a two days brand new MBP 17" i7

I just got a brand new MBP 17" i7 two days ago. Already had two issues:
    1. On the first day while the computer was doing an automatic software update I heard a loud horn type sound coming from within the machine. After that the screen turned grey with the Apple logo and a status bar underneath. After that the machine returned to the "normal" screen and keep working.
    2. Yesterday while trying to set up a mighty mouse the computer gave me the kernel panic screen. I turned the computer off and then on again and everything seems fine.
I contact Apple and they gave me two options for my peace of mind:
    1. Take the computer to an Apple Genius bar
    2. Send the machine back to the store
I own an iMac and a Macbook and this things had never happened before. I don't think it's normal for a brand new computer to do things like that.
This incidents took place within the first two day of receiving the computer, but maybe down the road or as I start installing programs like Final Cut Studio 3 or Office for Mac, things could complicate...
    What do you recommend?

    Hi there.
The noise you heard and the status bar is usually the result of a firmware update being installed. Nothing to be concerned with and in fact will probably happen again if they just swap out the machine.
The kernel panic may have just been a fluke but you could try running the Apple Hardware Diagnostics that actually shipped with the machine to rule out hardware. If the tests come back ok then you could try to just re-install the OS.
    Good luck.

  • How much does OSX take up on a brand new MBP HD?

Does anyone know on a Brand new MBP 128 SSD drive....how much is allocated to the OSX?
    Thanks in advance

You do need to install Windows twice - once under Boot Camp and once under Parallels - but you can legally use the same CD with the same licence for both installations. There is no need to buy two copies.
There is a program called Monolingual that will assist in removing the additional language support. Be care, as it has removed the components needed to run Rosetta for some users who were not as careful as they should have been.
Parallels has to run from within OS X, but some people have had success running Windows off of an external drive. I have not tried it, but the instructions can be found HERE.

  • Installing FCS 3 (upgrade) on new MBP with Mountain Lion

    Hi:
I just bought a new MBP with Mountain Lion installed.  I have FCS3 upgrade, which I have now on my Mac Pro tower.  I originally bought FCP version 1 back in 2000, so I've had it for quite some time.
When I insert the FCS install DVD into the MBP, the disc spins up and then spins down.... and nothing happens.  Nothing opens, no dialogue box, not sign of any activity.
    What am I missing here?

Open the finder window and click on the DVD to open it up. Make sure you have the first DVD disk...
I have FCS 3 (FCP 7) running in ML with no problems. I did a clean install of ML first... and installed the FCS 3 upgrade after that... But, make sure you install QuickTime 7 before you install FCS 3... FCS 3 with turn QuickTime 7 into the Pro version.

I installed LiveType from FCS 2 too...
