Brand new rMBP wouldn't start out of box without charger

Just got my 6th rMBP (all previous 5 were returned for various reasons such as yellowish display, poor battery, creaking, etc).  This one is the 15" 2.3 16gb 512gb model whereas the other rMBP were all base 15" models.
When i tried to start this rMBP, it would not start.  At first i thought I didn't press the button enough and so I pressed it several times.  Got worried and then plugged it in and pressed the button...still would not start then after about 20 seconds of charging, it started.
After going through all the setup processes, the battery says 4% charge.  This is the first time ever i've bought an apple laptop since 2004 that wouldn't start.  I can understand the laptop not being fully charged, but 4%?  That, to me, is a bit odd and low.
Has anyone else had that experience?  Is this normal?  It's now charging and says about 3 hours until full charge.  I'm a bit worried though b/c it is indeed very warm (the laptop surface by the esc key and power adapter, as well as magsafe2 adapter (i'm using the charger of apple 27" display).  I'm a little worried that I've got a bad battery.
One of the previous 5 rMBPs had a bad battery while the other rMBPs had amazing battery (8+ hrs of safari, itunes, ical, wifi, etc).
I did read the higher spec rMBP runs a bit warmer b/c of the dedicated graphics.
has anyone else had this issue?  should i be worried?
it's a LG display but so far no image retention and no yellowing which is good

Thanks for the reply.  Yes i use the charger from the apple display i have at my desk since it i have to plug in the displayport and usb cables (the monitor uses 1 cable w/ 3 separate connections: usb, mini displayport, and power).
just let it charge overnight and checked the battery status.  if i do nothing but turn on wifi, i get 7.5 hours it says of battery life.  that seems very low to me.  it's not even apple's 8 hour advertised life.
on the previous retina MBPs (base model), i was getting 10hours battery life, and that's using safari, wifi, and itunes.
i got this model b/c i wanted the 512gb hard drive.  seeing how battery life is poorer than the base models, i may just return and custom build the base model w/ 512gb

  • Brand new iPad Mini Retina- dead out of box

Just got a brand new ipad Mini retina and it won't turn on. Have tried all kind of reset button combos and nothing. Any suggestions or is it really dead? Have an appt at Apple Store in the morning, but would love to resolve it before then.

It's possible that its battery is totally dead. Try plugging it in and let it sit for an hour or two and see if there are any signs of life. Even if it does come back, I would still keep that appointment and get it checked out because normally iPads have a charge when you unbox them.

  • Brand new ipad wont turn on out of box

I bought a new ipad 16 gig from bestbuy tonight and when I opened it up, it will not power on. Connected it to usb and computer wont recognize it. tried charging with the wall charger and usb cord for about 10-25 min and nothing came on the screen, no red battery etc... Anyone have any other tips before I return the unit as defective?

May as well try a hard reset: press & hold both the Home (round one at bottom center of the screen) and the Sleep (small button on the top of the case) buttons for 10+ seconds. If successful, you'll see the white Apple logo appear in the screen and the boot process will continue. If not, time to head back to the Geek Squad.

  • Win7 black-screen-hanging-cursor problem on brand new rMBP

I am sorry but a face a problem similar to (surprisingly) many in this thread.
I have a brand new rMBP 15'' with bootcamp Win7 installed (90GB partition). Installation went painless ONLY with a fresh Yosemite 10.10.3 installation, otherwise I fell into said black screen-hanging cursor trap already during installation. After installation I could enter Windows and install some software there. Upon re-boot, black-screen-hanging cursor in top left problem.

  • This is what worked for me to install 8.1 Pro on brand new rmbp late 2013 NO WORKAROUND

15 in rmbp, late 2013. Extrernal apple USB drive. USB key for bootcamp drivers. Brand new windows 8.1 pro full version from store. No Upgrade.
Used Bootcamp assistant to 1) save drivers to usb key 2) partition drive to two. Left usb key and drive connected.
Bootcamp assistant reboots mac, windows splash screen. Follow instructions including having to reformat the newly created partition which is usual. No bootcamp parttionn name is present but it should be obvious which is the OSX and Windows partition. Windows begins installing then fails. rmbP is stuck.
Restart nothing, just grey screen. Call apple care. Have to PRM, press on, hold command option P and R keys.Release when apple beep starts. Then it will boot back into OS-X
Boots into osx. Go to bootcamp assistant. Follow instructions and windows partition is removed to give a single OSX parttion. Reopen bootcamp assistant. Repartition. leave USB key and external drive attached. Restart and follow instructions as before. NO issues.
Note, the "almost ready" splash screen hangs for a long time.
Then bootcamp installer comes up. Build 5411.NVIDA driver installed etc. Auto resart after drivers installed. USB drive and key attached. WIndows splash screen. SUCCESSFULLY installed.
OI can also hold down option now on restart to sleect which OS to boot into . WORKS GREAT.
I suspect you have to do a PRM reset after first failure using bootcamp assistant to get it to install properly thereafter.
After I did this I was able to install fine using bootcamp installer in OS-X. No need for ANY work arounds.

This process worked for me on a new Mac Pro (early 2014) to get Windows 8.1 (not 8.0) installed, although I did make one slight change to the process: instead of following your advice at the point: "Restart and follow instructions as before", I instead restarted and used the windows partitioner dialog to 1) delete the bootcamp partition, and 2) create a new partition that was slightly smaller than the remaining available space (by about 1GB). The installer said it might need to create an additional small partition (which it did). I continued with the rest of the install process as you describe above. (Yes, it did take a long time to get past the "almost ready" part.)
Thank you very much for your post!

  • Re: Brand new Pavilion 13 wont start

My computer wont start. What do I do? Besides reading instuctions on how to ask questions.
Also I tried using the chat but my computer was not mentioned when I typed its code which is why I tried this.
Horrible horrible service.  Imagine buying a brand new computer that refuses to start up and several days later after asking for help and instuctions on what to do next...you receive guidelines on how to ask questions.
Thanks Hewlett Packard! Anything else I can do? Any suggestions on how to go out of my way for a faulty product? Would you like me to bend over now?

  • Brand new macbook won't start up.  Help.

I recently received a brand new macbook as a graduation gift about 3 weeks ago. All has been absolutely fine until yesterday. I checked my email in the morning, closed the macbook and left for work. When I came home, I opened the macbook and pushed the power button. The screen flashed for a split second and remained black. No start up sound. The power light is on, battery light on the bottom says it's fully charged. When it's plugged in, the charging light is orange. Otherwise, no signs of life. I have an appointment tomorrow to meet with someone at the macstore, but I'm impatient and highly stressed and wonder what the problem is and what will be done about it.
    Thanks.

  • My brand new iMac won't start up now and I've only had it 3 weeks...

my brand new iMac has worked for 3 weeks, then all of the sudden won't start. It shows the apple icon and the spinning wheel but never gets past that screen. We already formatted our old iMac to sell it so I really need to recover this. Any ideas on how to get it to get past this screen? I already tried safe mode but it went to this apple logo and spinning wheel icon after the bar

  • Why did my brand new rMBP startup asking for a password?

I bought a brand new apple 13" macbook pro retina from my university autorized apple retailer store. Its an earlier 2013 model but still was bought brand new in a sealed box and all of the components inside are sealed with plastic. When I opened the computer for the very first time and turned it on it pulled up a screen with a user named "1" and asked for a password. I tried to just hit enter but it wouldnt allow me in and i guessed the password "1" which ended up unlocking the computer. It brought me straight to the regular desktop screen and didnt even offer set-up assistant like it says in the instruction booklet. It doesnt appear to have anything saved on the computer but I opened up the power section of "about this mac" and it says that the battery has 2 full cycles. This doens't seem right for a brand new computer? Somebody please help me out, the store I bought it from is closed now and they told me when I first bought it there are no refunds since I didnt buy it through apple directly. I do have a year of warranty through apple. What should I do?

What that store did was reinstall OS X to remove the original owners info and didn't know how to reset the Setup Assistant system to make it look like it had never been turned on.
But if they sold it to as new you have a good case for a full refund. If you get that refund do not buy another from that store.

  • Brand New rMBP Hard Drive already filled up?

I know I have posted already about this, but just wanted to put it out there again with a different purpose. Does anyone have a brand new base model macbook pro retina and knows how much of there hard drive was already taken up? I just got mine and it appears their is over 20gb of stuff already on it. Does anyone know how much space is used on a brand new one? Should I return this one or maybe a fresh install? Now be aware, that since I got the computer I have put about 10gb of stuff on it, with now 35gb being used up on my drive. Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I can't get my brand new mac mini to start up.

The screen goes black after showing me the applie logo. It does talk to me, but without the screen, that's not much use. Any suggestions? I tried restarting several times, incl. while holding the ALT key down. Same [lack of] result.

I've tried all suggestions and the MBP is not recognizing my Onkyo TX-SR705 which is only 3 or 4 years old.
Could this be a HDCP problem ?
You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.  Plus you have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.

  • Brand new Zen 8GB wont start up?

I was all giddy when my cousin got his new Zen 8GB. When we turned it on, the only thing that shows up is a blank white screen. HELP! Whats going on?! If its broken out of the box...thats horrible.

It has been fully charged and i have made repeated attempts with the reset button. The screen is still a blank white.
I have already asked amazon.com for a replacement.
Why is this issue occuring? I have heard it happening to several other new Zens as well. It was depressing to have a brand new mp3 player fail out of the box after waiting for weeks, and hurts buyer confidence in the product.
