Brand New Satellite L55 Laptop - The Lights are on But Nobody is Home - Help!

I bought a Toshiba L55A5385 15 Laptop about a week ago. I opened it up and other than finding the new Win8 interface a little annoying, everything seemed to work fine. I transferred a ton of files onto it from my old laptop over the course of a few days and everything seemed fine.
I am currently on a "vacation". I decided to bring both my old laptop and the new Toshiba so I could get used to the new one and make sure I had everything transferred over. I took it out of my suitcase, attached the power supply cord and opened the lid. I pressed the power button and it lit up like normal, but nothing EVER flashed on the screen. It is black. Not a peep. Like it's not even attached. So, lights on, but unusable.
I spent a couple hours googling and I found a quite a few threads that looked like they could be the same issue, but none of them had definitive answers. I HOPING that someone here can help me. PLEASE tell me I didn't buy a piece of crap!  (My first Toshiba)

  • The lights are on but nobody is home

ok so i booted up my iBook the other day to find this problem, all the spiffy lights come on and i get the chime, the screen is lit up but nothing really happens.. i leave it for a while and i get an icon in the middle of the screen. I've tried the OS X discs but they spin up but don't boot.
    http://www.monkey-junkie.com/stuff/DSC01020.JPG
that's a piccy of the icon. Any ideas on what is wrong and what is my next action?
    Thanks

    Papayafreak:
Command, Option, P, and R is the correct combination. Sorry
However, I am glad that you heard the chimes.
which did make it chime again and holding option made it go to a page with a refresh buttons and a next button, neither of which did anything.
If not boot volume icons appeared on the screen, it means that your boot volume is too badly corrupted to boot the computer. It may even indicate that you HDD is failing.
the disc doesn't boot up when i try, just the same thing.
You noted the above in an earlier post. Did you mean that you are unable to boot from the install disk or the internal HDD? If you are able to boot from the install disk, I would suggest trying to Repair Disk. If you are not able to boot from the install disk try the procedure outlined in the article Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck.
In addition, if you do not have an up-to-date backup, we need to take care of that before proceeding much further.
    Good luck.

  • The lights are on but nobody's home... or something like that

I just bought this iMac about a week ago. A few days ago the operating system froze up and I wasn't able to force quit anything so I had to power it off. I could hear it start back up again when I powered back on but nothing came up on the display. I took it back to best buy, where I bought it, and sure enough they plugged it in and it turned right on like nothing had happened. Took it home again and it worked fine. Today quicktime was updating and told me to restart the computer. I let it restart and had the same problem again. Took it back down to best buy, guy turned it back on, but this time the display will not become active again now that it is back home. I guess it likes it better at best buy, which is where I am taking it for good tomorrow unless someone can point me in the right direction! Any suggestions?

Try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU):http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95165

  • Lights Are On, But Nobody Is Home!

Incredibly frustrating ... After rebooting my internet, I can't get the internet Ethernet plug to work.  I know my internet modem is working.  I can get the internet via an Ethernet directly to the modem.  When I plug the same Ethernet cable (that worked when connected to my computer), the Linksys EA4500 "Internet" plug doesn't light up!
I've tried resetting the Linksys (keeping the reset button down for 30 seconds, then unplugging the power cable while still keeping the reset button down for 30 seconds, then plugging the power cable back in while keeping the reset button down).  During the whole time, the light indicator never flashed.
How do I fix this problem?

    Hi,
Check to see if the cable is a cross over ethernet or badly wired.
To check if its cross over:
Hold the cable ends side by side with the tabs away and copper contacts top
If the green and orange pairs are reversed then its a cross over cable
In the USA the standard is 568B in Canada 568A (its just a coloring standard the wiring is the same in ether case)
If your cable doesn't match either 568B or 568A its a bad cable and only working accidentally.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • The lights are on but no ones home!

This morning I updated my firmware. I let it run while I was getting ready for work and when I came back the imac was asleep. I tried to wake it up, which it did but the screen stayed black. I could tell the Mac was awake as I could open iTunes using the remote. I tried shuting down using control-eject-enter and then starting up again which it does but the screen stays black and the power light stays on. Tried starting off CD but nothing shows.

  • The lights are on, but Leopards not home...

    Hi,
I have sucessfully upgraded to leopard on my iMac. Smooth easy transition.
However when i tried to upgrade my partners macbook pro - i encountered a major error.
10 Mins into install my macbook ejected the disk voluntarily and crashed. I re-booted / and started up again. Greeted by blue screen and loading icon. 30 mins later sill no signs of life.
Tried a second boot - again no sucess.
Third attempt I booted with "T" - refused to acknowledge this command and many others.
Macbook is sitting looking awfully sorry for itself, blue screen, loading, please please please tell me this can be resolved :S
It has applecare etc only its my partners macbook and if he finds out he will kill me - ekk
    Thanks

Shut down and start up holding the Option key. This will take you to the Start-up Manager. You should then be able to insert the Install DVD and choose it to start up from.
BTW, I when I first installed Leopard I (1) Repaired Permissions. (2) Repaired Disk. (3) Chose Archive & Install. I did this on 2 different iBook G4 1.42 MHz. Both computers experienced difficulties, one to the point of being nearly unusable. A visit to the Genius Bar met with the advice to Erase & Install. This was done, but the issues were only completely resolved by the 10.5.1 update (from Apple Downloads, not software Update.) What more could I have done initially to avoid these problems? In my opinion I did everything 'Right'. Also the opinion of the Applecare Tech I spent 1.5 hours on the phone with.

  • ThinkPad T410 - Powers up, no display, WWAN light lit, lights are on but nobody's home...

Hi, had to sign up today as this has stumped me, my T410 has decided to stop working, prior to it deciding to not work I was doing some Windows Updates, it asked to reboot, laptop shut down, powered up, and that was that, stuck with a blank screen and no signs it's going any further. Took a look around the web and the closest I came to the symptoms (pretty much identical, but lacking my own observations) being discussed is here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T410-won-t-boot-blank-screen-and-keyboard-unresponsive-at-power/m-p/1838638 Only there was no solution to the issue aside from the person sending it off for repair, which I don't want to do considering I'm a laptop repair technician by trade (so no need for baby-steps, I can take full-on techy speak)!! I've reseated as much as I can (RAM, HDD, ODD, WiFi & WWAN cards, CPU, even the 56k Modem!!), pulled the power when on, disconnected the CMOS battery, done the power button 10-presses & hold for 30 seconds thing, all to no avail. The things it does do are the LEDs go through their own POST on powerup, the WWAN LED remains lit whether or not the card's fitted, the CPU warms up as though it's trying to do something and as such the heatsink fan spins up when up to temperature, and when I press the power button again for about a second (asI would to to switch it off when in Windows), the HDD LED lights up, then goes out, then the laptop beeps and shuts off. So, considering it can switch itself off, there's some life there, but obviously something's gone south with the BIOS, whether it has something to do with Windows Updates or not I don't know, but it is a very strong coincidence that it broke down right after installing them. Any ideas? Or am I going to be stuck using my T61 again 'til I can replace or repair my T410? Thanks in advance...

Anything? Would like to get my laptop back up and running as soon as possible, feeling somewhat left out of the windows 10 loop here (I have it reserved for that laptop!!).

  • The light is on but nobody's home

My Blackberry Curve is doing an imitation of a doorstop this evening, but for the bright red "charging" light at the top right corner of the thing.  It's fully charged.  The screen is dark.
    Any ideas?
If it helps, my carrier is AT&T.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Although this happens to a lot of people with no real explanation as to why, this usually works as a solution. Remove the battery with the phone on and leave it out for 30 seconds replace it and allow the phone 1-3 minutes to reboot. Any luck?

  • Ipod touch - lights are on but nobody is home!

I (like many others) can not access my iPod. I've uninstalled, re-installed, connected, disconnected, tried installing a previous version but still my iPod fails to work. iTunes will recognize the initial connection telling me to connect for restore but it continually fails - gets about 1/3rd of the way then sits dormant.
Everything was spot on & working fine until sunday when I connected up and allowed an itunes update to proceed.
I know iTunes works - it still accesses my library on the Home PC but my iPod is inoperable.
If you have an answer please share it.... if there is an Apple/iTunes IT guru scouring these pages - please help! let us all know what has happened & when or even IF there is a fix for this.
I want to know if my ipod Touch is dead or is it just in a Coma?
p.s. - I've tried all the above actions on both my home pc windows XP & my laptop windows 7.

Yeeee I can't work my ipod either. I was on iBeer and then it told me my ipod wasnt sophisticated enough or something like that and told me to turn my ipod off. So I did, and now no more ipod for me.

  • The lights are on but there's nobody at home

I have a BT Home Hub 2.0 which is three years old and has largely been OK.  In the last week or so the broadband has stopped working maybe 5 or 6 times a day.  The blue light is on but there's no broadband either to our hard-wired desktop or to the wireless devices.  I have to re-set the hub in order to re-establish the connection.  Twice I have had to re-set the hub more than once in order to re-establish the connection.  Phone line is fine and filters are all new.  Any ideas?

  • Wallstreet - light's on, but nobody's home.

I am fixing up a few Wallstreet laptops and one will not power up at all. The light on the hinge comes on when I first plug the AC in, but then it won't power up when I press the power button.
What steps would you take to diagnose this problem? I am fairly new to fixing up Macs and just don't know where to start with this one.
    Thanks for any input!

    Lynn,
Be very careful with the keyboard...you don't want to damage the keyboard ribbon cables.
When you release the latches in the expansion bays, normally the keyboard will pop up just 1/4". Slide the powerbook over to the edge of a table so you can look into the bay with a flashlight...check the latch that is working first...note how the latch slides back in a small guide and note how far it moves. Now check the troublesome latch. If it is not moving back, put a little pressure on the plain block sitting between the right arrow key and the shift key, then try moving the latch. (When reinstalling the keyboard, you do want to put a little pressure on the keyboard above the latches and push the latches closed...this will seat them tightly.)

Very strange. I had already disconnected/reconnected all cables but thought I'd humour you by doing it again, and totally removed the HD I had disconnected/reconnected and it worked!

  • Sleeping issue on brand new Satellite Pro U500-1EX

    Hi Guys,
    I've got a brand new Satellite Pro U500-1EX with Windows 7 64bit.
The laptop is having some issues with its sleep function. I am wondering if others have had the same problem - and if anyone knows anything that can be done.
    OK there are two issues;
    1. when the laptop enters sleep mode - it will come out of it on its own after some time. it goes to the login screen and wait for about another hour before going back to sleep. This is while plugged into power - and no LAN.
    2. When I close the lid to put the laptop to sleep - and while on the battery - after some time it will not power up at all. Plugging in the power will not do anything at all - the power light will not come on at all - suggesting the laptop does not even notice being plugged. I then have to take out the battery and switch the computer on (thereby losing any data I had when I put the computer to sleep!!).
So, have you seen this problem with your satellite pro's? Is it something common and to be ignored - or is there an easy solution to it?
    Thanks in advance.
    - Audette

I have actually updated the BIOS to the latest - one of the first things done when I got the laptop.
And, yes I do have the pre-installed OS that came with toshiba.
One thing I did notice is, if I have the laptop in standby and switch the laptop on again whilst in battery mode, then it will power up. But if I take out the power and plug in power before powering the laptop on- then it will not power up at all!!! Thereby, I have to take the battery out and put back in to get it to work. wierd huh??!!
