Brand new to Mac world...

All my apps are Windows apps, if I install Win7 with Parallels on my new MacBook Pro, would I be able from Photoshop on the Windows side be able to access an image file that is saved on the Mac side, like for instance, open>MacOS>IPhoto>image.jpg, or something like that?
I tried contacting parallels but got nowhere after too long waiting on the phone.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Joe

Yes, you can set Parallels (or VMWare Fusion, another virtualization solution) so that the guest OS (Windows, in your circumstance) can access folders and files on the Mac volume.
If you have further questions about Parallels, their FAQ and documentation will probably answer them:
http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
or you can ask in the Parallels forums:

  • Brand new to Mac, does TM backup all users files, even when not logged on?

Hi Im brand new to Mac so please be gentle with me!!
Im about to use TM for backup, I have an account and have made one for my wife, as we both have an iPod and so Ive herd its easier to use 2 accounts.
She wont be logged on much, so if when Im logged on does TM backup the whole HDD, rather than just the user that is logged on?
if not how does it work to backup everything? do you have to keep logging on?
    cheers

I have no idea what question the Apple person THOUGHT he was answering, but Time Machine backs up changes for everything in /Users (i.e., for all accounts) whether or not an account happens to be logged in at the moment. Just tested and confirmed.
    THE TEST:
My Powerbook has an Admin account a Standard account and the Leopard Guest account.
I Restarted the machine, logged in as the Admin account, and turned off System Preferences / Time Machine. I then created a Text Edit file on the Desktop.
In Time Machine I verified that this file was visible in the current view of the Desktop but not in the immediately prior backup.
I then logged out of the Admin account and logged in as the Standard account.
I turned on System Preferences / Time Machine and did a Back Up Now. I then turned off System Preferences / Time Machine again to insure no further backups might happen.
Of course the Standard account can't see into the Time Machine backups of the folders from the Admin account, so I logged out of the Standard account and logged in again as Admin.
Looking in Time Machine, I now see the Text Edit file both in the current view of the Desktop and in the backup just completed by the Standard account.
I turned System Preferences / Time Machine back on, and deleted the test file. Looking again in Time Machine, the test file is no longer in the current view of the Desktop, it IS in the immediately preceding backup (the one that the Standard account initiated), and is not in the backup prior to that.
    END OF TEST
This makes perfect sense since the file system event logs don't care whether a user is still logged in. Nor would a Deep Traversal backup care.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

  • If I purchase a brand new I-mac today do I have to run OS Lion or can I load Snow leopard?

If I purchase a brand new I-mac today do I have to run OS Lion or can I load Snow leopard?

Just faced that question, and the answer should be that you can run SL on the latest iMac.
(Our scenario:  Bought 3 iMacs in August.  Was surprised -- and relieved! -- to see that they arrived with SL installed on them, and grey system restore disks.  One of the machines was DOA.  Futzed around with it for 6 weeks trying to get it to work, decided it was dead, drove it 4 hours to the nearest Apple Store.  They gave us a new iMac, which when we got it back, turned out to have Lion on it.  Popped in one of the three grey restore disks that had come in August, installed SL, it works without any problems.)

    Hi,
    For maintenance.
    http://mackeeper.zeobit.com/
Check your Applications folder. If you don't want the app, just drag it to the Trash.
IMHO you do not need this utility. Your Mac will do maintenance for you.

There are many ways and applications that you can use to build a web site. Which will be best for you will depend on the site you want to build and your level of expertise. Many experienced web developers just use a text editor, often one with specialized features for web programming (BBEdit, for example), but there are programs that can offer additional help, up to and including "drag and drop". Without knowing more about your needs, it's difficult to offer specific advice, but here are some possibilities:
iWeb - came with your Mac. Easy to build but rather limiting in what you can do.
RapidWeaver - more flexible and capable than iWeb but harder to use; sort of an "inbetweener" application
Dreamweaver - powerful but expensive and a steep learning curve
There are of course a number of other options. If you can provide more detail about what you wish to build and your level of experience, someone can probably make more targeted recommendations.
    Regards.

  • Brand new to Mac.  Need to transfer my Itunes library from my PC to my Mac

I am brand new to the Mac world and very happy to be a part after my long trip with PC. I just recieved my new macbook pro and I am trying to find the best way to transfer my music library from my PC to my Mac. I also just purchased a new Itouch as well. I have not done anything with it yet and I was thinking it would be better to wait until I get my library situated with the macbook to do so?
Any help or advice would be a great help... I am completely lost. Everything that I have seen so far is more approachable to the point where it throws you off kilter!
    Cheers!

  • Brand new to Mac and having some issues with my MBP mid 2012

I am hoping someone can offer some advice to me, I am about ready to tear my hair out. I bought a mid 2012 MBP from best buy open box for $2000, it is the model with the 750gig hard drive and 8 gigs of ram. I has Mountain Lion on it and I have done all the software upgrades. I do not have a lot of software installed on it but it does not seem to be running right. I have had it about  three weeks or a month and it appeared to be running okay most of the time.
I tried putting parallels 8 on it so I could run some of my windows apps and I installed windows 8 and nothing else and it brought the laptop to a stand still it was crawling so slow I unistalled the software. The past few days I have noticed that when I open the lid and it wakes from sleep the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for upto a minute.
However today has been the worse by far. I am trying to copy some files about 300 gigs worth from a external drive to my hard drive so I can reformat the drive and while it is copying I am not able to do anything, surf the web, use word or anything because anything I try to do locks the computer up for several minutes or I have to force quit. The voice dictation feature no longer works when I press fn twice, nothing happens at all.
Is this normal, I mean I am very disappointed that a $2000 computer cant copy some files and surf the internet or type a word doc at the same time. Do I have a bad mac or am I expecting to much????? I am a therapist and use this laptop to take and store all my client notes I bought a mac because I need something dependable and reliable.
If this is not normal what do you suggest?

That would be your best bet. There is a reason someone returned it. Most people that buy a Mac, except me, never return them. Even if they don't run right. So for someone to return that unit they either didn't care for Mac OS X (that is why I return the first 2 I had) or there was something very wrong with it.

That is what I am thinking as well Shootist007. I am a best buy silver reward member and I have 60 days instead of 30 on all returns and I am thinking I may return it, pay the extra $200 and get a brand new one.

  • Brand New 2013 mac mini - where is my copy of mountain lion?

    Hi,
I have a brand new Mac Mini.
Were do I find my copy of Mountain Lion for me to make a USB installer for emergencies?
If I have to download a copy from the Appstore I will be very unimpresed!!!
    thanks,
    Matt

The newer version of os x are download only. There is a recovery hd partition on the internal drive that allows you to connect to the apple servers to download and install os x. Or you can use the internet recovery system to boot the system from across the internet to do the same thing. For the built in recovery hd you hold down the command+r keys at startup and for the internet recovery system you hold down the command+option+r keys until a globe comes on the screen. From either system you can then use disk utility to erase or repartition a drive and then reinstall mac os x on that drive or any drive connect to the system.
You can also download the os and make your own usb install thumb drive. There are many websites with instuctions on how to do that.

  • "Invalid Provisioning Profile. The provisioning profile included in the bundle {BUNDLENAME} [{BUNDLENAME}.app] is invalid. [Missing code-signing certificate.]" for brand new, vanilla Mac App

In OS X Maverick's XCode, I created a brand new Mac > "Cocoa Application", with Core Data and Spotlight Importerl; about as vanilla a Cocoa application I could muster.
Under Preferences > Accounts, I signed in to my Mac Developer Account.
In Targets > Identity, I set Signing to "Mac App Store", and was able to select my Mac Developer Account for "Team".
I then went to Product > Clean, and then Product > Build for... > Running, and then Produt > Archive.
In the Organizer, I select the resulting .app and click "Validate", and hit the Mac App Store radio, and hit "Next", and it's able to log into my Mac Developer Account.
I select my Provisioning Profile in the dropdown, and click "Validate".
It comes back with several errors:
1 - "Invalid Provisioning Profile. The provisioning profile included in the bundle {BUNDLENAME} [{BUNDLENAME}.app] is invalid. [Missing code-signing certificate.] For more information, visit the Mac OS Developer Portal."
2 - "The bundle identifier cannot be changed from the current value, '{DIFFERENT-BUNDLE-FROM-OTHER-PROJECT}'.  If you want to change your bundle identifier, you will need to create a new application in iTunes Connect.
3 - Invalid Code Signing Entitlements.  The entitlements in your app bundle signature do not match the ones that are contained in the provision profile.  The bundle contains a key that is not included in the provisioning profile: 'com.apple.applications-identifier' in '{BUNDLENAME}.app/Contents/MacOS/{BUNDLENAME}'
I was able to do the same process before, for a vanilla app, before Mavericks.  I'm not sure if this is a Mavericks error, or a fact that now I have multiple app projects.  Particularly odd is that DIFFERENT-BUNDLE-FROM-OTHER-PROJECT in error (2) is not the same bundle name as the current project's bundle.
Would love any help you can provide!  Thank you!

  • My brand new unopened Mac Pro stolen

I bought a brand new Mac Pro and it was stolen before I even had a chance to open the box and use it. I've signed on to icloud to lock it and filed a police report but want to know if there's anything else I can do to recover it as I likely won't be able to purchase a new one with the amount that my insurance company will cover.

  • Trying to unload a brand new I-MAC 24"

I just bought a new I-MAC 24' 4GB 2 duo for an employee who never showed up for work. I paid over $2800. including the Apple Warrenty. I have it in the local paper for best offer over $2000. but no calls so far. Does anyone know how I can sell it and get some of my money back? I have several Apples now that I use in my business, but this one is brand new in a box and never used.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Seems to me you're doing this backwards: You made a business decision that you needed a new employee, so shouldn't you be seeking one of them not selling the hardware?

  • Brand new to Mac....

I have just purchased my first Mac (a MacPro) and will be migrating from Windows. My system is due to arrive on Monday and I have a couple questions concerning how I want to set up the system.
In the past I have had multiple hard drives or partitioned hard drives to isolate types of date (mostly to make backing up easier). The new system has a single 250 Gb hard drive to which I will be adding a 500 Gb drive. I would like to partition the 250 Gb drive into 3 partitions - one for operating system and programs, the other 2 for data.
My question here is, would it be easier to just partition the drive and re-install the OS and application(s) or would it be easy enough to image the original install to the 500 Gb drive, re-partition the 250 then restore the image back?
A second question - I understand the Mac stores my stuff in a folder called "Home". I would like to put this "Home Folder" on one of the partitions on my drive. Is this doen in "Preferences"?
I'm looking forward to learning more about the Mac and how to use it - this move is, to be honest, both exciting and a little scary.
    Thanks for the help.
    Carl
    MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Carl -- congratulations on the switch.
    Here's what I'd suggest...
Leave the 250 alone as your System drive. "Mac" will put your User account, all your Applications and system on this drive. Partitioning it wouldn't give you any benifit... except to say if you are going to add a windows partition for BootCamp - but the way Mac partitions that you can add it at any time without destructing any other information on your system drive. Follow the BootCamp forum for more informatino there.
Ok -- so you've got 3 other bays for SATA drives... make sure they indeed are SATA drives and not ATA drives. (Though you CAN add an ATA drive in your second optical bay... but that's another post) You can find 500gig drives for under 150us. Partition those all you want... if you REALLY want to.
You didn't say what your main use for this MacPro will be, but I can wager that you will get better performance with two drives running than trying to have data on a partition on your system drive and only accessing this one drive for two pieces of information. (if that makes sense)
Mac doesn't always store stuff in HOME... only if you really tell it to. Now, things associated with iLife and iTunes indeed do get stored there, but with some help you can put your iTunes library anywhere and redirect iTunes to look there for it... same (although harder) with iPhoto.
Bottom line -- don't partition your System drive.
OH -- in Mac world there is no such thing as slave and master drives. All work as masters. You can add a system to any of your bays and it will boot fine.
    Hope this all helps.
    Good luck,
    CaptM
