Brand new white mac, having issues ...

Hi,
I just got this MacBook yesterday, and used Migration Assistant to transfer my files and stuff over. Before I did that, I used my external HD and Time Machine to transfer, and didn't get my latest save - not sure why. So then I did the Migration, and it still didn't transfer the newest stuff. I figured I could live with that. Then last nite I was in the Systems Preferences, since I wanted to change my screensaver on this new one. But for some reason, whenever I click on one of the screensavers to test it in that small screen, everything freezes up and I get the dreaded rainbow spinning wheel (I'm sure that thing has an official name but I don't know what it is). I have to shut down the whole computer to get out of it. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
It kind of worries me now that there are going to be other issues down the road. I love Macs, they're all I've ever owned, but I got this white one because my 3 year old black one has had so many issues - been sent back twice with hard drive crashes and it comes back still not fixed. I'm starting to get a little gunshy.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or insight.

If a file is corrupted on the bad hard drive, it will stay corrupted on the good hard drive. Unfortunately, Migration also transfers applications, preferences, and everything else. A few corrupted documents won't hurt much, but corrupted system files could cause instability.
You're right, I want to start totally fresh ... I don't know how to repartition the new one. Could you walk me through that, please? Thanks so much.
Make sure to have a good, recent backup - corrupted or not. Boot from the installer disk (holding down the C key). From the installer Tools menu (I think) run Disk Utility. Repartition your hard drive to a single volume. Everything will be erased. Then let the installer run. Next, update until it won't update anymore. Then reinstall your applications and copy your documents back over.
That is what I do every time I update to a new OS or new machine.

  • Brand new 2010 Mac Mini issues....

    I took delivery of my 2010 Mini this morning.
    After initial set up I first noticed the clarity on the text is very poor compared to the AppleTV it has replaced? I also find the WiFi streaming of audio and SD video to be terrible, where the ATV which it has replaced was perfect, even when streaming HD!
    Lastly, I find it very slow, having the "spinning disc" show up whenever I try and do something? Not what you want from a fresh machine which only has Firefox installed on it so far?
    Has anyone else experienced these issues and can I rectify them? I feel like sending it back, the performance is awful for the cost of the machine.

    Also, a few folks have mentioned that the cable plugged into the antenna was a bit loose. You might try opening the bottom, and making sure that the cable is properly seated.

    Thanks for that link.
    May be coincidence, but having tried the Mini upstairs where another AppleTv was sited it crept up to 54Mbps.
    Should've tried it downstairs again where it was only getting 11Mbps to see if that was still the case, but decided to check the connector - you can see the gold/brass coloured connector through the grill - using a blunt probe I touched it and it wasn't loose, but I applied some gentle downward pressure didn't seem to move, but now getting 54Mbps in the original site. Perhaps coincidence, maybe as I've disconnected the other wireless device, who knows.
    Will see how it goes for a few days but if performance falls off may take it in to be looked at.

  • Brand new to Mac, does TM backup all users files, even when not logged on?

    Hi Im brand new to Mac so please be gentle with me!!
    Im about to use TM for backup, I have an account and have made one for my wife, as we both have an iPod and so Ive herd its easier to use 2 accounts.
    She wont be logged on much, so if when Im logged on does TM backup the whole HDD, rather than just the user that is logged on?
    if not how does it work to backup everything? do you have to keep logging on?
    cheers

    I have no idea what question the Apple person THOUGHT he was answering, but Time Machine backs up changes for everything in /Users (i.e., for all accounts) whether or not an account happens to be logged in at the moment. Just tested and confirmed.
    THE TEST:
    My Powerbook has an Admin account a Standard account and the Leopard Guest account.
    I Restarted the machine, logged in as the Admin account, and turned off System Preferences / Time Machine. I then created a Text Edit file on the Desktop.
    In Time Machine I verified that this file was visible in the current view of the Desktop but not in the immediately prior backup.
    I then logged out of the Admin account and logged in as the Standard account.
    I turned on System Preferences / Time Machine and did a Back Up Now. I then turned off System Preferences / Time Machine again to insure no further backups might happen.
    Of course the Standard account can't see into the Time Machine backups of the folders from the Admin account, so I logged out of the Standard account and logged in again as Admin.
    Looking in Time Machine, I now see the Text Edit file both in the current view of the Desktop and in the backup just completed by the Standard account.
    I turned System Preferences / Time Machine back on, and deleted the test file. Looking again in Time Machine, the test file is no longer in the current view of the Desktop, it IS in the immediately preceding backup (the one that the Standard account initiated), and is not in the backup prior to that.
    END OF TEST
    This makes perfect sense since the file system event logs don't care whether a user is still logged in. Nor would a Deep Traversal backup care.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Just faced that question, and the answer should be that you can run SL on the latest iMac.
    (Our scenario:  Bought 3 iMacs in August.  Was surprised -- and relieved! -- to see that they arrived with SL installed on them, and grey system restore disks.  One of the machines was DOA.  Futzed around with it for 6 weeks trying to get it to work, decided it was dead, drove it 4 hours to the nearest Apple Store.  They gave us a new iMac, which when we got it back, turned out to have Lion on it.  Popped in one of the three grey restore disks that had come in August, installed SL, it works without any problems.)

    Hi,
    For maintenance.
    http://mackeeper.zeobit.com/
    Check your Applications folder. If you don't want the app, just drag it to the Trash.
    IMHO you do not need this utility. Your Mac will do maintenance for you.

  • Chip in brand new White iPhone

    This morning I noticed a chip in my brand new white iPhone.  I haven't dropped it or anything, it's on the edge of the phone right below the button.  Should I take it in?? I shouldn't have a chip if I haven't done anything to it!

    Take it in.  You've nothing to lose.

  • Brand new to Mac and having some issues with my MBP mid 2012

    I am hoping someone can offer some advice to me, I am about ready to tear my hair out. I bought a mid 2012 MBP from best buy open box for $2000, it is the model with the 750gig hard drive and 8 gigs of ram. I has Mountain Lion on it and I have done all the software upgrades. I do not have a lot of software installed on it but it does not seem to be running right. I have had it about  three weeks or a month and it appeared to be running okay most of the time.
    I tried putting parallels 8 on it so I could run some of my windows apps and I installed windows 8 and nothing else and it brought the laptop to a stand still it was crawling so slow I unistalled the software. The past few days I have noticed that when I open the lid and it wakes from sleep the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive for upto a minute.
    However today has been the worse by far. I am trying to copy some files about 300 gigs worth from a external drive to my hard drive so I can reformat the drive and while it is copying I am not able to do anything, surf the web, use word or anything because anything I try to do locks the computer up for several minutes or I have to force quit. The voice dictation feature no longer works when I press fn twice, nothing happens at all.
    Is this normal, I mean I am very disappointed that a $2000 computer cant copy some files and surf the internet or type a word doc at the same time. Do I have a bad mac or am I expecting to much????? I am a therapist and use this laptop to take and store all my client notes I bought a mac because I need something dependable and reliable.
    If this is not normal what do you suggest?

    That would be your best bet. There is a reason someone returned it. Most people that buy a Mac, except me, never return them. Even if they don't run right. So for someone to return that unit they either didn't care for Mac OS X (that is why I return the first 2 I had) or there was something very wrong with it.

  • Brand new X1 Carbon - big issue - screen corruption in BIOS/boot, constant rebooting and BSOD

    Hi all,
    I got a new X1 Carbon mid March and am now having pretty severe problems with it. It first started a few days ago with this within Windows:
    Click to see larger
    I rebooted it and it came good. Now today, it did it again so I rebooted it and it started not being able to boot. It would get to the first Lenovo screen where it says 'Press enter to interrupt normal startup' the screen would go corrupted and it'd reboot.
    So I went into the BIOS to run Lenovo Diagnostics and whenever I press enter on Lenovo Diagnostics it just reboots again. Sometimes when it reboots, the green light on the power button flashes a few times, the keyboard flashes and then it all goes dark and does that for 5-10 times before booting.
    Now most times (say 19/20 times) it tries to boot, it does 'Preparing automatic repair' but it is frozen and as you can see below it is broken:
    Click to see larger
    Out of the 1 of 20 times it manages to get into Windows, I get:
    Click to see larger
    In terms of specs, this is the highest end X1 Carbon with the i7, 2580x1440 touch screen, 8gb RAM and 512gb ssd if that helps at all?
    The model# specifically is: 20A7-A008AU with a S/N of R9-009TXX (last 2 digits truncated).
    All I have done so far is managed to update the BIOS before it crashed again. It has the latest version now from the Lenovo website, mid-March build I think. The drivers etc are all standard but it wouldn't be driver related as the reboot/corruption etc happens before Windows as well. I presume the 'preparing automatic repair' is a Windows function, but the same symptoms happen within the BIOS etc. I haven't got a photo of that as it reboots before I have the chance to snap a pic.
    I've lodged a job with IBM (for some reason it redirects to IBM when you go to lodge a service call, is this normal?) but am hoping someone else knows of a quicker fix for me because it's difficult for me to be without a laptop due to my work.
    If this is a replace job -- which I imagine it is as it seems to be hardware related to me, how often does that typically take in Australia?
    Edit: Resized images to keep total under 50kb as per moderator request

    I just got told that I have to wait 72 hours before I can lodged the claim because that is how long it takes to reflect that I upgraded the warranty. Even though I only bought the laptop brand new 3 weeks ago!
    What a waste of $334 to extend the warranty this morning. Be warned all that if you upgrade it for the hope for a quicker fix you have to wait 72 hours for Lenovo to know you upgraded the warranty to next day onsite fix despite having the invoice etc for it and they won't even lodge a normal warranty claim because there is a new one coming!
    I asked for a service number and got told I can't have one because they won't lodge the claim until the warranty database is updated! 3 week old laptop. Sometimes I wish I got a Mac so I could just go into the Apple Store and swap it there on the spot.

  • Penryn Macs having issues?

    Okay,
    I have finally decided to move to Mac OS and buy a MacBook Pro.
    * iWork '08 preinstalled
    * Accessory Kit
    * MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
    * 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    * 200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    * Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
    * SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    * 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    * Apple Remote
    * NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB
    I am extremely exited. But before i order, i was wondering if I should expect allot of problems? About 2 years ago, my friend bought a macbook and had to have it replaced 5 times. How have the Penryn macs been?
    This will l be my first Mac ever so I am hoping to have a good transition to the mac world:)
    Thanks,
    Mac Zac.

    Hi Zac.
    Let me be the first to say, welcome to the light side!
    Regarding the Penryn Macs: No, there are not so many issues that you should hold off buying one. If you browse the forums here you'll find lots of people running into problems. But remember that all the millions of people that DON'T have problems don't come here to tell you everything's working fine. For the vast majority of people, Macs work seamlessly, day in and day out.
    Of course, like all technology products, sometimes Macs have issues. They are made out of the same silicon and chips as other computers and, like those other computers, components can fail or go bad. That's just life. The good news is: it's rare.
    Likewise, Leopard is running extremely well for the vast majority of people. To be sure, there are a few small issues affecting small groups of people. Some folks are having wireless troubles, others are seeing some typing issues after a keyboard firmware update, for some folks iTunes is locking up while browsing cover flow. But, again, these issues don't appear to be too widespread and I would certainly not hold off buying a Mac because of them. You can bet that Apple engineers are all over the issues and they'll be resolved soon.
    To sum up: the state of the Mac world is fantastic. Like everything else in life, it's not perfect. But it's as close as you'll get with a computer! My advice is to pull the trigger and enjoy the switch! And I'll put my money where my mouth is as well: my $3,000 Penryn MacBook Pro arrives tomorrow morning.

  • Help! Brand New Lenovo A10-70 - Issue Downloading Apps

    Hi Lenovo Community,
    I just purchased a brand new A10-70 tablet and while I love the price and features, there appears to be on major issue. Whenever I try to download game apps from Google Playstore, the pad errors out and tells me "Application Could Not Load to SD Card", heck I don't even have an SD card installed.
    This is  actually the second tablet doing this to me. I took the first one back and exchanged it thinking that there was a software glitch but it now appears it is a platform issue.
    Games such as Minecraft PE simply will not load while others appear to load fine but then when you go to open the app and  use it, you get a notice that the app is not installed.
    I have other tablets from Samsung, HP and even Nabi which have never had  issues downloading game application.
    What's up with Lenovo?
    I am willing  to try to get corrected but cannot wait long, will take back  and get another Samsung.
    Thanks,
    Biggzy

  • Brand New 2013 mac mini - where is my copy of mountain lion?

    Hi,
    I have a brand new Mac Mini.
    Were do I find my copy of Mountain Lion for me to make a USB installer for emergencies?
    If I have to download a copy from the Appstore I will be very unimpresed!!!
    thanks,
    Matt

    The newer version of os x are download only. There is a recovery hd partition on the internal drive that allows you to connect to the apple servers to download and install os x. Or you can use the internet recovery system to boot the system from across the internet to do the same thing. For the built in recovery hd you hold down the command+r keys at startup and for the internet recovery system you hold down the command+option+r keys until a globe comes on the screen. From either system you can then use disk utility to erase or repartition a drive and then reinstall mac os x on that drive or any drive connect to the system.
    You can also download the os and make your own usb install thumb drive. There are many websites with instuctions on how to do that.

  • Brand New rMBP 13" Wifi Issues

    I have a new Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late-2013 model that is having Wifi disconnect issues. It seems to happen when the computer goes to sleep and wakes up. It refuses to reconnect to any of my preferred networks when it wakes up.
    I was on the phone with AppleCare for about an hour and they are submitting the case to Apple Engineering. I see from the forums that I am not the only one having issues with the Wifi problems, that it seems to be a common issue.
    I will update this as I get news as to what is going on.

    After myriad tests, I called Apple Support.  Following the initial conversation, I had a useful, engaging, educational session with a senior adviser, who took hours with me, while we tried all different things.  No success.  I live 100 miles and a ferry ride from the nearest Apple store, so none of my options going forward were attractive.
    Finally, after we had signed off,  I thought of one thing we hadn't tried to isolated during all this work.  The Magic Mouse itself (old).  It was the mouse.  It was the doggone mouse!  Mouse and bluetooth on, malfunction.  Mouse and bluetooth off, great function.  Mouse off, bluetooth running (I made sure to be running my bluetooth speaker, too) -- EUREKA!!!  Wi-fi speed was fine.
    Moral of the story:  test all hardware first.
    The mouse is broken.  I just ordered a new one.
