Brandnew MacBook Pro trouble

Just bought a brand new Apple MacBook Pro (5,1). Very excited.
Unpacked it, switched it on.. normal procedure.. filling in few forms and came to OSX. Tho after that it started to do a lot of things at the same time and OSX went really really slow. So i decided to reboot. But at the reboot it got stuck on the Apple screen (no circle below it).
So I thought I'd reinstall OSX and getting rid of the extra languages and printer-files. So I format the disk, checked the disk and started reinstalling. Half way through it came with a message "Installation failed". Huh? Tried again, same outcome. Tried the official Snow Leopard disk I bought 3 weeks ago for my current laptop. Same outcome. Huh?
Called Apple Care and they tell me insert second disk and hold down the D button to run an extended hardware diagnosis. I should call them back after it's done since it'll take a while. Now I can hold the D button but nothing happens..?
How do I get into the diagnosis application?
What's the procedure next if hardware fails?
What's the procedure next if the install disk fails?

Ye I wish
In Europe (at least the Netherlands) we know DOA as well. But as stated before I have to run a hardware diagnostics for them first. To see if it's the notebook or the disk. I cant actually take it back since I bought it online and we have no Apple stores in the Netherlands, only Premium resellers.
Got the diagnostic running at the moment, taking about 2 or 3 hours I think.

  • Brandnew macbook pro retina kernel panic

    Dear community,
last week I bought the brandnew macbook pro retia 13". Since then I've experienced two kernel panics.
Below I've added the recently occuring one.
The MBP is connected to an external display, to a keyboard via USB and to a bluetooth mouse.
Anyone have an idea what's the reason for this? Unfortunately I can't read these panic codes.
I'm thinking of returning or changig the mbp.
    Thank you,
    Sebastian

  • Macbook pro, trouble with external hard drives

I just got the drive on my mid-2010's macbook pro replaced at Apple. I am now experiencing a new problem.
My macbook is having trouble with ALL my external hard-drives. After a few minutes of being plugged in I click on them to open and the finder window is blank. Its not allowing me to veiw the content stored on the drive. If I keep trying my computer will freeze. I try to 'Force Eject' the drive and it doesnt eject so I have to unplug then start over.
This seems to happen roughly about 5 minutes after I plug them in. They work fine the first 5 minutes. Its becoming extremly annoying. All my drives are different makes, sizes, etc.. so I pretty sure its the macbook.
    What might the problem be?
    Thanks,
    Shane

These are external HDDs that worked prior to the install of the new internal HDD?
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Trouble

I own a 1.83 Ghz Core Duo MacBook Pro which I purchased last year in March. Recently (Past Month or 2) when I shut my laptop it doesnt go to sleep like it should. This happens about 60% of the time. This has caused lots of trouble, mostly when I put my computer to sleep and wake up the next morning to find the fans running at full power. I havent had that much trouble with this computer, besides a battery replacement and MagSafe replacement. I have a small whine but it doesn't bother me much. I should probably mention that sometimes when it does manage to go to sleep, when I try to wake it up, the computer doesnt respond and it refuses to wake up. The only way to fix that is to restart it and then when I boot back up it gives me a "Mac OS quit unexpectedly" message. (That happened about 5 times on Saturday)

Assuming there's no mechanical problem it sounds like system corruption.
First, boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostics screen appears. Run the extended tests. This will determine if there's a hardware problem.
If there's no hardware problem then do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If this doesn't straighten things out then it's probably time to reinstall OS X. Assuming the hard drive has been verified as OK in the previous exercise, you can reinstall OS X using the Archive and Install option which doesn't require erasing the hard drive. However, if there were any disk errors that could not be repaired, then your only option is to re-format the hard drive and then reinstall OS X.

  • Iphone macbook pro trouble

Cna you help me understand how to pair my iphone 4 with my new macbook pro running lion via bluetooth.  I have tried the same connection technique that I have used to successfully pair my bluetooth headset, mouse and keyboard and this isn't working.  What am i doing wrong?

Use the cable instead. You can't sync the iPhone and Mac or exchange files between them via Bluetooth anyway, so there's little point in pairing them at all. And the cable is far simpler.

  • Macbook pro trouble shooting

    Hi all,
I have struggled with my mbp for weeks. It all started with one night when I did not shut down it for the whole night, leaving word, eclipse...etc running for the whole night. Then the next morning the laptop just broke down. It freezes all the time(with the colorful beach ball) and when I took it to the Apple Store, they just test the hard drive (which showed the test failed). I do not want to get a regular HDD from Apple Store so I brought a Samsung 840 evo online and performed a clean install with bootable usb drive and installed Yosemite to my laptop. (I have tried Mavericks and it was just too hard to boot up.) It still stuck all the time, during safe mode, after every click, and I myself as a girl and a student just got so disappointed after spending so many time on it. Still,  I want to figure out what is wrong.Either SATA cable, hard drive cable, logic board or something else...... I tried clean install many times, tried reset SMC,PRAM,Disk Utility.....etc.
Also, when I ran the Apple Hardware Test, it gave the error code 4HDD/11/40000004: SATA(0,0), but I got the code before and after I installed the new ssd, and I also saw someone's laptop runs smoothly but still gets the error code, so I am suspect if this error indicates problem about my hard drive.
So much thanks if anyone can help me!!!!!!!
    MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2012

Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

Here's how it should be setup:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • My Brandnew 15 inch Macbook Pro (mid 2012) Crash to Black Screen

My Brandnew Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) just purchased last August 2012, i turned it on and watched some movie online and youtube when all of a sudden, the screen would turn black and the machine would not react to any keyboard or mouse input anymore. All I could do was hold down the power button to turn the computer off.
i really appreciate your ideas about this problem...

If it has happened more than once, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Connecting my Macpro to a new Macbook Pro?

I have a Macpro (dec.2007) and a brandnew Macbook pro. I bought a 24" Cinema Led Display to use with my Macpro only to find out that it needs to have a minidisplay connector.
Anyway; I am now thinking if it would be possible to use my macbook pro as my main computer with the new display attached and link it to my 'old' Macpro. Would that work? The MacPro runs on Max OSX 10.5.8 and the new Macbook on Snow Leopard.
I am not sure if it is such a great idea and what the problems are but I was wondering if it is at all possible and if anyone has any experience with this.
    Thanks!
    Simone

That depends on what you mean by "use." What exactly do you mean?
If you mean harness the full power of the Mac Pro, you could do it using Screen Sharing to control the Mac Pro from the MacBook Pro.
If you mean to access the files from the Mac Pro from the MacBook Pro, then you want to use File Sharing from the Mac Pro.

  • Oh No! Kernel Panic on MacBook Pro 2010

The horror starts again (I had this issue with my first MacBook Pro some years ago):
    My brandnew MacBook Pro i7
    17inch, 2,8 GHZ, 8GB Ram installed by Apple-Shop,
is starting to give me at least 2 Kernel Panics a day.
    Who knows why?

  • Macbook Pro Crashing frequently

    Hi!
My brandnew Macbook Pro (15'' / 2,5Ghz / 7200rpm HD / 4GB 3rd party Ram (OCZ)) crashes quite frequently; it seems like someone pulled the plug (even though it's plugged in and the battery fully loaded) - the screen simply goes back and the HD/CD spinns down. It then autmatically reboots.
I think this could be a power issue, it happens very often when I charge my iPod, have a CD in the drive, and challenge the processor a bit.
Anyway, it's extremely annoying (it happend 4 times in the last two hours).
Has anyone a solution other than sending the MBP to Apple?

    Hi!
I checked my ram with the Memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/download.html).
I found out that my RAM was failing; Both pieces at the exactly same test & address. So I guess, my RAM doesn't work with my MBP in general. (Strange because all specifications are exactly the same).
So I'll look for working RAM, thanks for your help!
PS. It's quite a bad habit of mine that I tend to forget to tell people in forums how I solved my problem...

  • (Trouble printing) Trouble with connection between Macbook Pro and Hp Deskjet 1510.

Trouble with connection between Macbook Pro and Hp Deskjet 1510. (Nothing Prints).
I have a Macbook Pro and am having difficulty printing documents from ‘Pages' from my Hp Deskjet 1510. I have installed the necessary software for the printer and it is connected via USB. Every time I try to print the printer icon comes up as it should, 'printing' and then 'job completed' and then the icon disappears. (Nothing is printed.) I thought it might be something to do with Pages compatibility with the printer but exporting the document to Word or making it a PDF doesn’t change anything. I don’t have Microsoft Word on my computer. The scanner does work and when I printed a ‘Test Page’ that worked too.
Let me know if you know why this is happening.

With these settings the network now works flawlessly, however, when i have my ethernet cable plugged in, my internet access via my airport card(on the macbook pro) is no longer available. Hoping you can tell me why this would be with this info i've provided.
Educated guess. The networking devices have priorities as to which are used. The standard order is that Ethernet has a higher priority than Airport.
While your Ethernet is unplugged it is inactive and the Mac ignores it. Once you plug it in, the Mac sees that it is active and switches traffic to that interface.
I actually take advantage of this feature at home, but configuring my Airport and Ethernet with identical fixed IP addresses. Normally I'll use Airport, but if I'm copying a huge file and I want faster performance, I'll just walk my MacBook (previously iBook, previously Powerbook) over to my Ethernet switch and plug in my MacBook. Magically, the Mac detects that the Ethernet is active and continues the file transfer uninterrupted over the faster 100baseT Ethernet connection. When the transfer is finished, or if I really need to move back to the Comfy Chair, I unplug the Ethernet cable, and all activity reverts back to the Airport, all without disrupting any existing networking connections.
You on the other hand have totally different settings for your Ethernet and your Airport, so when you switch to Ethernet, you basically loose your Airport connections.
    Something you can try:
    System Preferences -> Network
Gear icon on the bottom left, next to the [+] [-] icons.
    Select *Set Service Order...*
Now Drag the network interfaces into the perfer priority order you want. In this case put Airport above Ethernet.
NOTE: You may want to create a new Network Location for this, instead of messing with your normal home Location (which is most likely the default Automatic. That way you have your original you can always fall back to.

  • Why is my mid-2010 macbook pro having trouble booting and crashing?

I have a mid-2010 13 inch macbook pro that has recently began to have severe problems. It started after I shut it down one night and woke up to the sound of my mac's fans running loudly and my computer running extremely hot. Apparently, it must not have finished shutting down that night and something went wrong with it when i closed the lid. Ever since then, the computer will either take a long time to boot up (the apple symbol will take up to a minute to appear, and then up to several more minutes to go to my desktop) or it will display an error (either the folder icon appears instead of the apple logo, or the apple logo appears and then after a minute or two is replaced by the circle slash). Once i'm in, the computer seems to function normally, but anytime it needs to access the disc there might be another delay, or the computer will freeze, forcing me to shut it down again. The most common time this occurs is when I am waking the mac from sleep. In addition, the cpu would run hot (~85) which would imply i was doing high cpu activity, except i was usually doing very little, activity monitor showed low levels with sudden intense spikes whenever i did something.
I've run several diagnostics to try and determine the problem, but none identified an error:
booting computer from different computer/startup disk - runs fine (apparently. gave my mac to someone else to try this test, could not see results for myself)
Thorough Apple hardware test: no problems found
disc utility: disc/discpermissions verified and repaired with no issue.
PRAM/VRAM reset: actually sped up the lagging of the system once it reached the desktop and intense cpu thing but booting problems still persisted.
archive and install: some of the time it would fail to install in the middle of the installation, forcing me to start again, but once i completed it, issue still persisted.
clean wipe of drive with restoration from time machine: computer speed better but still trouble when booting.
Clean wipe of drive without migration of data: computer running and booting quickly, but occasionally still received circle slash instead of apple logo.
At this point, i don't know where the source of the problem lies. The computer is old, but has never had an issue until recently. The problem is inconsistent, and all testing implies it doesn't exist, which makes its diagnosis extremely difficult. As it is a 2010 mac, it is clearly out of apple care and warranty so i cant go to a genius. I have a weak battery (80%) and my screen lid is a little loose from frequent use, but those are the only blatant problems i'm aware of with my mac.
Any suggestions? I can gladly provide more info as needed.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Is my Macbook Pro dying? (freezing, crashing, trouble at turning on/off)

    Hello,
I'm having some trouble with my Macbook Pro 10.6.8. It was working very fine until last week. I've bought it speakers (for Windows, though the seller said it'd work fine for Mac too). After a few days, my Macbook started to crash a lot, freeze, and have troubles when turning on and turning off. So I've stopped using the speakers, the issue still happens. I suppose my Macbook is having those issues because of bad quality speakers. Every time I turned the computer off, I could hear an odd sound coming from the speakers.
    Issues:
    - It crashes. Even when I'm in a website like Google (it doesn't use flash, 3D, has many animated pictures, etc), it takes longer to crash/freeze but still it does after couple of hours. It simply randomly freezes.
    - It freezes too. The same above. At times it just freezes, others, the screen goes odd! It goes messed up with the image itself, colours, stripes, it blinks... and I'm also unable to use apps such as games, skype, etc. I was able to use them few days ago.
    - The "Rainbow Wheel of Death" appears often now!
    - To close apps, the "send report" window now appears more often either.
    - I'm almost always having trouble at turning the computer on. It sometimes delay, sometimes it tries to turn on (it appears the normal loading screen) but then it turns off because it couldn't work, so I have to try again. Sometimes the Black Screen of Death appears and I have to force turning off.
    - I'm almost always having trouble at turning the computer off. That window saying that I have to restart shows up sometimes. Well, I don't have many troubles at turning off since it's turning off... but sometimes it is just odd, seeming like the computer won't turn on again. Because it lags, it briefly freezes before turning off (causing the Rainbow Wheel of Death to appear), and so on.
How I've tried to fix it:
    - I did the Disk Repair numerous times.
    - I ran the anti-virus and such, they didn't detect anything.
    - Yesterday I've deleted thousands of junk files (you know, those odd images and files that you find in your All Documents folder?). There's plenty of free space in memory.
    - Yesterday I was having too much trouble at turning it on, so it went in Internet Recovery mode. It took long to finish, I thought it was going to be fixed. But it did not.
    - I often try pressing the option + command + p + r thing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
    - I didn't try to reinstall, because I can't find the CD installer (if I have it). But I'm sure it wouldn't work either.
None of those works. I really hope the HD disk won't die since I'm having to press the power button often... and I'm starting to think that it's an issue with graphic card/video card. But I have no idea of how to replace those, how much they cost, which I should buy, where to find... it's getting tough.
Please, help me! What's happening to my Macbook? It never had such problems before, I have it since last year! What shall I do?
This Macbook can't die! It's the only computer here and repairing/buying a new one would be so expensive!
    Thanks in advance.

If it has 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on installed it is more then like a few years old. Could be the drive is failing.
Your best bet is to take it in to an Apple store and have it checked out. But first you should backup your data to an external drive as soon as possible.

  • Trouble with a new MacBook Pro - times 3 now..

    Hi all,
Trouble Trouble Trouble - my frustrations with Apple:
    1) MacBook Pro -bought 19th nov 2009- Death On Arrival, 4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0)
Been sent back to Apple and I got a new one.
New MacBook Pro -got it on the 25th nov 2009- Started to have random Kernel Panic's 2nd of November:
    2) Kernel Panic's everywhere.. even on the Mac Bootdisc with Disk Utility.. as random as they appeared, so random they went away. Just to be sure on the Apple helpdesk they advised me to cleaned disk and reinstalled everything. Lucky I made a back-up when it was still working.... otherwise I'd have lost everything.
    3) Worked well for 2 or 3 days and now -6th dec 09- all the sudden it doesn't want to start anymore. Giving me 9 beeps at start-up on a black screen in the morse code s.o.s. 3x short, 3x long, 3x short)
    Apple?
I'm sure when I call Apple tomorrow I'll have to bring away my notebook to an Apple Service Provider cause they can't help me on the phone. If so, I will have to wait for another 20 days(experience in the past with my bro's MacBook for a new harddisk(!)).
I used to be a PC-guy and took the brave step to be a full-time Apple-guy, but this is just frustrating me. Sold my old laptop and now I'm without one for ages.
What would my options be? Could I get a complete new notebook?
    Niek

Giving me 9 beeps at start-up on a black screen in the morse code s.o.s. 3x short, 3x long, 3x short)
    Sounds like bad RAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US
    Or bad power.
Have you attempted to change the power supply or power source? If it isn't plugged into a surge protector, you may have issues with your house power that create problems for multiple computers.
Also, be sure you aren't damaging the power cable unintentially*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/frayguide.html
This is a user to user board.
    Call Apple directly at:
    (31) 0900 7777 703
And let them know your repeated issues. They could give you a replacement machine, but also ask for a replacement power brick to at least test the theory the power brick may be damaged.

  • Can I transfer troubled contents of my iMac into my MacBook Pro & back?

Can I transfer the contents of my iMac (4,1; 2 GHZ Intel Core Duo; 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) into my new MacBook Pro (8,2: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7); both with OS 10.6.7?
I was having trouble with 10.4.11 on my iMac, as shown here: Link: [discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768285&tstart=0]. I went ahead & installed Snow Leopard & had automatic downloads of the updates.
I am having more trouble now. By the end of the day, I cannot type into browser address line, nor delete highlighted items, nor highlight multiple items. This is temporarily cleared up by restarting.
I previously have always kept my machine going while away from desk. Now, in the evening, it seems to go to sleep--even tho I have web pages that are supposed to refresh themselves automatically & iTunes radio station supposed to stay running.
Yesterday & today after being away, I could not make the screen turn on--although the iTunes radio was playing. This is temporarily cleared up by restarting.
    1. Can this situation be fixed? Problems were not completely solved under Tiger.
Disk Repair indicated disk is OK. I have downloaded AppleJack; & each morning upon starting, it shows a full screen of permissions corrected of various forms of java in system library.

When some sort of update check runs, it shows a bunch of different missing bundle identifier:/library/receipts/...
Would this mean I should try to reinstall Snow Leopard again? (Then update that from my 10.6.3?)

Question for #2 & #3 (neither of which I have ever down before): If I transfer the contents of iMac hard drive to MBP, will it stay in a folder that I can transfer back, or does it all spread itself throughout the MBP?
If I install a new hard drive, will the transferred-back stuff still exhibit the same problems?
    Thanks,
